Editor’s Welcome Clearly the main roles of RAF Shawbury are to train tri-service helicopter aircrew and Air Operations personnel, but one of the pleasures of editing the Aries magazine is seeing the range of activity that supports those roles and what our community get up to. Aries looks to showcase the Whole Force and what makes RAF Shawbury tick and such a great place to be.

In this edition our second ‘Focus On’ feature looks at the role our Defence Partner Aquila plays in supporting the Defence College of Air and Space Operations simulators. These frequently unsung heroes simulate aircraft movements and radio transmissions to provide realistic training.

Biodiversity is not a word that you see often in this magazine, but did you know that RAF Shawbury has been supporting the Praise Bee charity for over ten years? Initially the solitary Red Mason bee was introduced to remote areas to increase pollinator and recently Solitary Leafcutter bees were introduced to further increase the natural diversity.

So another wide range of activities and exploits to entertain and inform you in this edition, I hope you enjoy it.

Welcome to the summer edition of the Aries magazine!

A

s we move into the summer, it is clear that the global landscape in which UK Defence operates continues to evolve at pace and complexity.

From persistent instability in Europe to broader geopolitical stress arising from shifts in transatlantic leadership, the demands on the Ministry of Defence remain significant and unrelenting.

Our Armed Forces are required not only to deter and defend, but also to reassure allies, respond to crises, and adapt to an increasingly contested and unpredictable world.

These challenges translate directly into greater demands on people, platforms, and infrastructure. Whether supporting NATO commitments, contributing to global security operations, or maintaining readiness at home, Defence must balance operational output with long-term transformation.

At the same time, financial pressures, technological change, and workforce demands continue to test our resilience and ingenuity.

Against this backdrop, the importance of the RAF Shawbury community cannot be overstated.

RAF Shawbury sits at the heart of the UK’s Military Flying Training System, delivering world-class rotary wing training that underpins the capability of our front-line forces. Alongside this, the Defence College of Air and Space Operations (DCASO), plays a vital role in preparing personnel to operate effectively in increasingly complex air and space environments. As the character of warfare evolves, with greater integration across domains, DCASO’s contribution to developing informed, agile and operationally ready personnel is essential.

Together, the outputs of flying training and DCASO ensure that both operators and those who plan, enable and integrate air and space power are equipped to meet the demands of modern operations. This is a mission of

national importance, delivered every day with professionalism, dedication, and quiet excellence.

However, the strength of Shawbury lies not only in its operational output, but in its people. Our Service personnel, civil servants, and embedded contractors form a cohesive and committed team.

Equally vital are the families who support them. The demands of Service life - frequent moves, long hours, and periods of separation—are shared by families who provide the stability and encouragement that enable our people to perform at their best. Their contribution, though often less visible, is fundamental to our success and deserves our continued appreciation.

We must also recognise the critical role played by our contractor partners. The expertise, innovation, and continuity provided by our industry colleagues

are essential. At Shawbury, contractor support is not peripheral - it is fully integrated into how we operate and deliver outcomes. Together, we form a team that is greater than the sum of its parts.

As we look ahead, maintaining this sense of community and shared purpose will be vital. The challenges facing UK Defence are unlikely to diminish, but by recognising the vital contribution, continuing to invest in our people, supporting our families, and working in true partnership with industry, we ensure that RAF Shawbury remains resilient, relevant, and ready.

This summer edition of Aries magazine provides an opportunity to reflect on our collective achievements, recognise the contributions of those across the Station, and reinforces the strong community that defines Shawbury.

RAF Shawbury Airfield 10K On a sunny but blustery Saturday morning at the end of March over 250 runners lined up for the start of the RAF Shawbury 2026 Airfield 10k, ready to give it their all.

B

ut how did they get there, and why was the airfield being turned into a road running course? After a year hiatus to carry out runway works, this was the culmination of months of hard work from the Airfield 10k Committee, restarting this fantastic event which has been going since 2018! This event has been a core fixture in raising money for the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund (RAFBF). This year would aim to be a huge boost to fundraising for such a great charity that supports all RAF Personnel and their families, past and present.

A new runway was laid; new medals were made and goodie bags filled. We were ready to invite runners from all over to stamp their mark on our airfield!

But before we could set loose the eager participants who had signed up, gotten their bibs and enjoyed the static aircraft on display, a much-needed warm-up and words of encouragement helped ensure motivation was high. A special introduction was needed for our VIP guest, Olympic Silver Medallist and World Champion in BMX, Keiran Reilly!

Once the final checks were carried out and all the volunteers in place ready to direct all the runners, Kieran started the race and they were off! 10km to experience the unique setting of RAF Shawbury’s airfield where it’s not every day you can get to run up and down a typically active and busy runway (we made sure no aircraft were flying on it for this day!).

for the first half of the 10km, things were looking speedy, but then the weather changed its mind and put on some strong headwinds for runners to contend with. However, it didn’t stop them and in what felt like a blink of an eye our first finishers crossed the line with Robert Weston leading the charge, finishing in a time of 34:41! Closely followed by James Lewis in 35:06 and Isaac Walley in 35:56!

Runners of all abilities took to the sunny but very windy conditions well, with smiles, fast feet and cheering onlookers ready to motivate at the halfway stage plus music/commentary at the race station. With some blistering times going on (wind being kindly at runners

The ladies finished very strongly as well, with Helena Burnett taking this year’s top spot in 40:48 with Lynne Callaghan 2nd in 42:08 and Amelia Grice finishing as 3rd fastest female at 43:28!

Our top three male and female finishers received their medals with goodie bags, their names and times to be engraved onto the station 10k trophies and their very own trophies made by our fantastic workshop section.

It wasn’t just the top finishers who received medals and goodie bags, all runners received a custom designed RAF Shawbury Airfield 10km medal

and goodie bags kindly provided

by RAFBF, including brilliant vegan brownies provided by our very own ESS team, and donations of items such as magnesium recovery powder and recovery balms to help everyone with the sore legs!

The sore legs were worth it though.

Indeed, after everyone’s efforts, it was the Station Commander’s pleasure

to present a cheque to RAFBF for a fantastic £3,186 through ticket sales, fundraising and sales of items on the day!

Thank you to everyone who helped with this event, who took part and who donated. Because of your efforts, the RAFBF can help support those RAF personnel past, present and future whenever they need help.

On 26 March, RAF Shawbury was pleased to welcome members of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme. Members of Parliament from across the political parties can join the scheme to learn more about today’s Armed Forces and personnel.

The MPs also met key support staff and took the opportunity to discuss how our personnel and their families are supported throughout their time at RAF Shawbury.

Military Match Day

After receiving the ball, Squadron Leader Smailes places the ball on the plinth

On Saturday 21 March, a Juno helicopter and aircrew from No.1 Flying Training School delivered Shrewsbury Town’s match day ball to add a bit of flair to this special annual occasion.

The day marked Shropshire Council’s Armed Forces Covenant Military Match Day and RAF Shawbury’s Squadron Leader Smailes received the ball from Sergeant Pearce immediately prior to kick off of the League Two match against Crewe Alexandra.

Supporting Pollination at RAF Shawbury My earliest recollections of RAF Shawbury were back in the mid-sixties when as a young boy, my father and I drove over to the Station on the back road to have a look at decommissioned Shackletons being broken up for scrap. Like most young lads, I had a fascination with all aircraft as our farm at Hunkington lay under one of the main flight approach paths so there was always a regular airshow of Jet Provosts, Chipmunks and occasionally Vulcans flying overhead.

n 2011 I decided to start my own research into the pollinator crisis and as an ex-farmer, horticulturalist, I built a nursery for a client to unsuccessfully breed Red Mason bees (Osmia bicornis) for commercial pollination. I subsequently felt a better approach would be to study and breed them naturally in the wild.

Starting off within the loop of the River Severn in Shrewsbury where there was colony of Red Mason bees living behind the old houses in Frankwell, I then began breeding my own colony in my nursery at Walford Heath.

With the aim of expanding the scheme, I then decided to tap into the Defence Estate which represents 2% of the UK land mass.

Where better to start than RAF Shawbury after locating a colony at a house nearby.

NATO Visits No.1 Flying Training School has hosted visits from four NATO allies over the last few weeks, namely from Canada, Germany, Latvia and Norway.

T

he visits underline the reputation of No.1 FTS as a world-leading military rotary-wing aircrew training provider, as well as the UK’s current role as Chair of NATO’s Flying Training Europe programme.

Our German colleagues attended the latest graduation of German military pilots graduating from the School and, with Canada using the H135 Juno for flying training, this was an opportunity to discuss common challenges and opportunities. Our Latvian colleagues visited both No.1 FTS and the Defence College of Air and Space Operations at RAF Shawbury.

Armed Forces Bursaries Available

T

he type and role that the Sqn operates today is in stark contrast to the Morane-Saulnier, single-seat fighter aircraft, it flew at its genesis from RAF Gosport on 30th April 2016 during WW1. With Battle Honours stretching from the Western Front and the Somme in 1916 to Burma in 1945, the Sqn’s history is rich and combative.

It also includes a Victoria Cross winner, Captain Albert W.A ‘Billy’ Bishop, for his solo attack on a German aerodrome destroying three aircraft and several ‘probables’ in 1917. As well as links to Colonel T E Lawrence, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ whom was stationed with the Sqn in 1928-1929 at RAF Kohat.

The squadron badge is a markhor’s head and was approved by King George VI in December 1937. Chosen to commemorate many years of service in North West India, the markhor being a mountain goat frequenting the Khyber Pass. The horns of a markhor were presented to the squadron in 1964.

Sixty Sqn’s transition to rotary aviation began in 1992 with Wessex helicopters at RAF Benson before the Sqn was assigned to what was the RAF element of Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) at RAF Shawbury in 1997 flying the Griffin helicopter. In 2018, the Sqn became part of 9 Regiment AAC within No 1 Flying Training School, flying the Juno helicopter to provide Advanced and Tactical Rotary Wing training to both pilots and crewmen, prior to their postings to Operational Conversion Unit. A task it continues to deliver and with the Sqn motto of: ‘Per ardua ad aethera tendo’ – ‘I strive through difficulties to the sky’, there is not a more fitting motto for phase 2 trainees as they strive to achieve their coveted flying badges and become the next generation of rotary aviators.

670 Squadron’s Training Officer, Major Pemble, passes 8000 flying hours Achieving his wings in 1998, he served with 3 Regiment Army Air Corps (Regt AAC) based at Wattisham, which included operational flying tours in Canada, Bosnia, Kosovo, Belize and Northern Ireland. As an instructor with 9 Regt AAC, he served in Poland, Afghanistan, Kenya and Belize.

Serving at Middle Wallop, Yeovilton and RAF Shawbury also, he has flown Lynx Mk 7/9/9a, the Wildcat AH1, Juno and Jupiter aircraft.

Lieutenant Colonel Woodhouse (Commanding Officer 9 Regt AAC) ensured this impressive flying career landmark was celebrated.

Spitfire ready for departure

No.1 Flying Training School (No.1 FTS) were immensely proud to escort the twin-seat Spitfire TR9 with one its Juno helicopters on Wednesday 15 April.

T

he TR9 was undertaking a UK-wide circumnavigation of the UK coastline to mark the 90th Anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire prototype K5054 from Eastleigh Aerodrome on 5 March 1936.

The leg involved the Spitfire taking off from RAF Valley and flying to St Athan.

No.1 FTS’s 202 Squadron, which is based at RAF Valley, provided an ideal location from which to plan the escort and launch the Juno.

Deputy OC ASOTS runs from London to Paris On 30th April, Team Expect Toulouse, a team of 5 Royal Air Force and Royal Navy personnel including Flight Lieutenant Handscomb-Dean, set off on their epic adventure – running from London to Paris in just 4 days as a 5-person relay, all to raise money for Parkinson’s UK and Regain Sports Charity.

ay 1 began at 0600 sharp with a mass start in Wimbledon ahead of the 115km to Newhaven. Spirits were high as runners weaved their way through the streets and out towards the M25.

By the time the runners had passed Gatwick airport, the sun was up and the temperatures rising. Eventually the South Downs loomed on the horizon and the day’s big challenge – getting up and over Ditchling Beacon, a gruelling uphill and mostly off-road slog on already tired legs. Once at the top though the views were spectacular looking back towards London before finally getting our first glance of the sea. Finishing at Newhaven Football Club and rewarded with a Fish and Chip feast, we had some time to freshen up before heading to catch the overnight ferry to Dieppe. Day 1 was done, 115km covered and 1177m of total ascent – next stop, France.

By midday, the cloud had given way and the sun was back, creating a humid atmosphere. Day 3 took us through the scenic French countryside and quaint villages. wasn’t going to give in easily, legs 1 and 2 were straightforward but then the foothills surrounding Paris emerged as a final cruel and leg-sapping twist through forests and Parisien suburbs and arrival at the Palace of Versailles and the last leg along the Seine into Central Paris. At this point the whole team were reunited and after a quick change into our Run2Paris branded t-shirts, relay baton and champagne bottles in hand, we were off in the pouring rain to run our last mile together and complete our journey by finishing beneath the Eiffel Tower and celebrating as a team.

We had made it – total distance ran:361km, climbed 3435m and £3600 raised for our extremely worthwhile charities.

All that was left to do was get a wellearned shower, head to the pub for some celebratory beers and some sightseeing before turning around and heading for home, thankfully this time in the car rather than on foot!

Exercise Berwyn Hike

A new AT/FD committee has been established within DCASO. The purpose of this committee is to organise and sustain a consistent Adventurous Training/Force Development calendar while offering DCASO personnel the chance to enhance their communication, organisational, and leadership abilities, or simply to participate in the events to experience a variety of activities. Personnel can dismantle existing barriers in the workplace and strengthen team bonds while enjoying the activity.

The inaugural event, the Berwyn Hike, was organised and led by Mountain Leaders Flight Lieutenant Billington and Flight Sergeant Brown. We embarked on a journey to Pistyll Rhaeadr, a breathtaking 240-foot waterfall located in the Berwyn Mountains, Powys, Wales,

frequently recognised as the tallest single-drop waterfall in the UK. It is one of the Seven Wonders of Wales and boasts a well-known, easily accessible viewpoint, a café, and diverse hiking trails.

A group of thirteen set out for the summit under beautiful sunshine. We followed the most frequented route, traversing magnificent valleys and along a challenging ridgeline towards the trig point, before pausing for lunch and taking in the views towards Snowdonia.

The mountain leaders seized the opportunity to highlight geological formations and the historical context of the area.

We were fortunate to witness a Texan two-ship flypast as we descended the valley, before stopping at the top of the renowned waterfall. The team then returned to the starting point for well-deserved tea and cake at the café. Plans are already underway for the next two events, which will include paddleboarding at Alderford Lake and another hike in Mid-Wales.

RAF LEAD Program visit to US Embassy Corporal Harrison, an Air & Space Operations Trainer within DCASO, is currently partaking in the RAF LEAD programme and recently represented the RAF as part of a roundtable hosted at the US Embassy in London. The visit formed part of a collaborative leadership engagement between the RAF LEAD Network and the Royal Navy’s Leadership Institute (LIRN), bringing together personnel from across the Whole Force for an embassy tour, orientation brief, and a facilitated roundtable discussion on leadership and organisational culture across the United States Air Force, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.

The roundtable focused on how leaders at all levels can effectively shape and sustain positive organisational culture, with participants encouraged to share candid experiences and perspectives from across Defence. The event highlighted the value of stepping outside normal working environments to enable open discussion, cross-Service learning, and authentic collaboration.

Insights gathered from the session will contribute to ongoing leadership and culture work within Defence and will be fed to respective Chain of Commands, reinforcing the importance of joint engagement and inclusive leadership development.

Inside the Poseidon: Air Traffic Controllers’ Insight at RAF Lossiemouth In April, Lieutenant Monk, Warrant Officer Penrice and Warrant Officer 2 Skiff travelled to RAF Lossiemouth for an immersive two-day visit to No. 120 Squadron, home of the RAF’s P8A Poseidon.

The squadron is responsible for a broad and demanding portfolio that includes antisubmarine warfare, antisurface warfare and maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.

he first day focused on understanding capability. The group received a comprehensive brief outlining the P8’s role, sensors and operational reach, followed by time observing a simulator session that showcased how the aircraft and crew operate in complex maritime environments. This provided valuable insight into the coordination, decision making and crew integration required to deliver effect across multiple mission sets.

Time was also spent with No. 8 Squadron, who are preparing for the introduction of the E7 Wedgetail. The visit offered an early look at how the E7 will operate and the stepchange in airborne early warning and control capability it will bring to the RAF. For air traffic controllers, this perspective

on future platforms and operating concepts was particularly valuable, highlighting how command, control and battlespace management will evolve.

Day two began early, with a 0430 start ahead of a 0730 departure on a P8 training sortie. Over the course of the six-hour mission, the team observed how the aircraft and crew conduct typical operational tasks, including searching for, locating and identifying vessels of interest in the busy North Sea. The sortie took on added realism when it swiftly transitioned into a search and rescue scenario, with the crew executing well-rehearsed techniques and procedures to locate a simulated

Overall, the visit proved extremely worthwhile. For a group of air traffic controllers, it delivered a firsthand appreciation of what happens onboard one of the many platforms they could be communicating with on a daily basis.

Seeing the aircraft’s capabilities, crew coordination and operational demands up close reinforced the importance of mutual understanding between controllers and operators in delivering safe and effective air and maritime operations.

Tribute to Tony Morris We pay tribute to the late Tony Morris.

Tony worked in the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess for over 35 years, seeing thousands of trainees start out in their military careers. He was a much-loved member of our station, a friend to many and will be hugely missed as demonstrated by the hundreds of messages we received on social media.

Personnel from RAF Shawbury supported his funeral providing a Guard of Honour at St Mary’s Church in Market Drayton. Afterwards a wake was held in the only place it could be – RAF Shawbury’s Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess (WOSM).

The Station was equally honoured to reveal a lasting legacy in the WOSM. The Bar where he worked for 35 years

has been renamed, ‘Tony’s.’ It was always his and now always will be.

FOCUS ON The Aquila Team

Aquila Flight Simulator Operators There is one question every Flight Simulator Operator (FSO) dreads being asked at the dentist, or at a party: ‘What do you do for work?’

O

ften replied to with ‘I pretend to fly planes’ or ‘it’s kind of related to Air Traffic Control’, resulting in bemused looks and blank stares. In a nutshell, both of those statements are true, we operate a simulator all day providing the voice over as a pilot, whilst air traffic controllers learn how to control the skies, but there’s much more going on behind the scenes.

Working in a simulator-based environment means we often work in two modes: solo and team and both are essential for providing an effective simulator exercise. There are just over 40 FSOs currently, and in a regular Terminal Radar Simulator (the start of the Joint Air Traffic Controller’s Course) we work in groups to simulate four positions (Talkdown, Director, Approach and Zone). There are other positions and simulators for more advanced parts of the course. It starts with introducing new procedures, phraseology and practicing specific scenarios, every 26

exercise is an opportunity to hone your individual skill set. Over the course of a few months, we will go through every procedure on the list, that might mean simulating aircraft emergencies, landings, or sometimes simply flying around and around in the circuit— whatever gets asked for by the trainer, until it becomes second nature to the student; and for us, at this point, it’s all muscle memory!

Then there is the team, this is where the intensity really picks up. This is not just about knowing what to do; it’s about knowing how to do it and potential impact to others. Communication, timing, and liaison skills - all of this is second to none. You could create the best exercise of your life, but if you cannot communicate with your colleagues or the trainers, it falls apart fast. That said, there is enjoyment to be had in relying on others to make your exercise go well. Sometimes the stakes (even if virtual) feel real, and it gives us all a chance to learn from each other’s strengths and, of course, occasional mistakes.

Another thing that’s hard to explain is that simulator-based environments come with their own language (ATC phraseology), and you learn to speak it fluently, whether you mean to or not!

There are acronyms, abbreviations, and shorthand that becomes second nature. You don’t say ‘Can you generate me a simulated aircraft’ but ‘Call me an initial in’, You don’t say ‘Okay’, ‘That’s fine’, or ‘I understand’ but simply ‘Roger’, it’s never ‘Pardon’ or ‘Excuse Me’ but ‘Say Again.’ It’s a cross between a secret code and a professional dialect.

In fact, you could walk past one of our simulators and think we were speaking in riddles: “I can’t get this track on the ILS” “Did you call Pan on that?”

“Are you in TRS today or ACT?” It’s not just jargon, either—it has purpose. This language keeps things clear and efficient, and once you’re fluent, it’s like flipping a switch, and yes, sometimes you accidentally use simulator-speak at the dinner table!

So what do we do? We work together and we work alone. We always strive for a better exercise than the last. We help future air traffic controllers become precise and adept in their work. So whilst it might seem like all we do is press buttons on a computer in a simulated world, the world of air traffic is a serious one, with potential impact on the safety of real people in the real world.

RAF Shawbury Model Flying Club (RAFSMFC) The Royal Air Force Shawbury Model Flying Club (RAFSMFC) was formed in 2004 to promote the collective interest in model aircraft flying along with the mutual appreciation and consideration for Club members and other recreational users of RAF Shawbury.

odel aircraft flying takes place at RAF Shawbury by kind permission of the Station Commander and in accordance with the provisions of the License granted annually by the Defence Infrastructure Organization (DIO).

The Club flies every weekend including Public Holidays, unless the Station has an event planned or the weather lets us down. In addition, during the summer after real World flying has ceased, we are able to go flying in the evenings. We can fly from three different locations around the airfield dependent on the wind direction and whether the airfield is being used by the RAF Shawbury Gliding Club.

The Club is a member of the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) and is free to join for all Serving Service personnel, once they have paid their fees to the BMFA. The Club also has several civilian members with an enthusiasm to fly radio-controlled aircraft. The Club has a wealth of experience on many aircraft including ex World and British Champions and qualified examiners to help pilots progress through the BMFA Award scheme.

We fly many different types of model aircraft ranging from single wing aircraft, twin wing, jets (large and small) and helicopters (stunt and scale), and control line. Many of the members now have scale aircraft to fly and it is impressive the standard of make and performance of these models. All our models are to be operated strictly in accordance with BMFA guidelines and CAA Article 16.

A busy time for Shawbury Military Wives Choir this spring In February we celebrated our 15th birthday! Military Wives Choirs have come a long way in the time since the BBC series The Choir - Military Wives. There are now over 70 choirs worldwide with over 2000 members.

We had a stand in both Wem and Market Drayton for International Women’s Day in early March. It was great to be involved in this initiative and to have the chance to share the message that singing is good for you.

Jo and Jennie were interviewed on BBC Radio Shropshire about the choir and what it means to them. The interview was live on 9 March but can still be found on BBC Sounds. It was great to have this fabulous chance to talk about how singing and choir membership can be of benefit, and how being part of a Military Wives Choir can be particularly helpful to women who are involved with the military in any way.

In March we held a new members’ evening, and we have been delighted to welcome a good number of new members to the choir as a result. It doesn’t matter if you weren’t able to come to the newcomers’ evening; if you’re interested, just get in touch and you will be welcome any time. Military Wives Choirs are open to all women who have a military connection, you don’t have to be a “wife”, so if you’d like to come along, just let us know.

15th birthday celebration

There is a small patio and seating area behind the Station Church which had become rather overgrown and unusable. In April, with permission, some of our members got together to tidy the area up and make it accessible again. We are looking forward to being able to use it during breaks in our practices now that the lighter evenings and warmer weather have arrived.

Over the next few months, we will be having a stand at Shrewsbury Armed Forces Day on 27 June at Shrewsbury Castle, and a stand at Families Day on 21 August, so if you’re at either of these events, please pop by and say hello.

Shawbury Airplay’s first ever Young Leaders graduate Recently, three members of the Seniors group from the Airplay Youth Project completed their Young Leader training and qualified as the first ever Young Leaders at Shawbury Airplay.

Charlotte, Eliza and Rhys, all aged 16, attended 6 weekly sessions including how to be a good role model, basic safeguarding training and finally preparing and delivering an Easter quiz to our junior members.

They were presented with their certificates and special Young Leader hoodies by Cheryl Foster, the Station Youth Worker.

SSAFA Sunflower Season Hello everyone. Hopefully over the Early May Bank Holiday, everyone in Service Family Accommodation at RAF Shawbury received an envelope of Sunflower seeds.

The idea is that as many people are able plant these and nurture them over the Summer, probably planting them out from their seedling pots in early June. Hopefully shortly after that we’ll start to see patches of bright colour, bringing cheer to us and much needed sustenance to our native Bee population.

Wolframs Syndrome UK Charity Run On 25 April, trainees from No.1 Flying Training School ran 60 km in support of Wolframs Syndrome UK, a small charity that supports those with the condition and focuses on spreading awareness in Medical professionals.

The goal was to run through as many local ex-RAF and current landing grounds as possible, taking the runners through High Ercall, Peplow, Chetwynd, Ternhill and ending at Sleap.

The team were supported by family

and friends, which was a good thing, as the twenty-one-degree heat meant they drank everything they had and still needed more. Indeed, the kind volunteers at the Wollerton Village Room were very generous in their support.

Totals for the day were - 61.6 km ran, £246 raised and 21 litres of water consumed.

GLIDING CLUB NEWS

Fly with RAF Shawbury Gliding Club (RSGC) You will have seen that we’re now back on the new hard surfaces and have ramped up the flying schedule to meet the ever-increasing demand from those who want to fly with the club, both novices and the more experienced pilot.

Aerobatics has been a particular theme these past few months with two noteworthy performances. Laura Martin won the Dan Smith Memorial Trophy competition, an important part of the British Aerobatic Association competition calendar. Laura is also nominated as a team member by British Aerobatics from the squad of six highpotential pilots who have been training together in preparation selection for the World Championships in Fayence, France later this year.

Air Recruit Brad Lefley-Kemp, an RAF Cosford Apprentice, completed his evaluation and achieved the standards required to be awarded a Display Authorisation. Without doubt Brad will be the youngest non-professional aviator pilot in the RAF to hold a CAA recognised Display Authorisation and, subject to confirmation, he will be the

RSGC Glider Display pilot at the 2026 RAF Cosford Air Show.

RAF Shawbury Boxing Show On 16 April, RAF Shawbury hosted its annual Boxing Show.

This was an opportunity for fighters from the RAF Development Squad and RAFs Brize Norton, Wyton and Cosford to compete against Army Units and West Midlands Clubs.

Air Recruit Kendall, who is currently training to be an Aircraft Technician at RAF Cosford, was awarded Boxer of the Night.

Congratulations to him and all of the 10 bout winners. Thank you to all of our boxers, officials and audience who made it such a memorable evening of competitive sport. Thank you also to our sponsors RAF Association and RAF Central Fund.

Qualified Helicopter Instructor wins Jiu Jitsu gold Warrant Officer Class One (now Captain) Simpson from Central Flying School (Helicopter) Squadron has become Army Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belt Medium-Heavy Champion at the Army Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships.

Successful completion of a major gym upgrade The RAF Shawbury Physical Education Team (PEd) are celebrating the successful completion of a major gym upgrade that will significantly enhance physical training provision.

The team have replaced the existing CrossFit rig with a newer, far more capable system that doubles the number of training stations and greatly expands overall capability.

This upgrade will directly benefit both formal Phase 2 training and informal gym users, helping to meet the growing demand for physical training in support of Project ALTUS and the forthcoming trainee uplift at Shawbury.

WO Simpson said, “I am proud to represent the Army Air Corps in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, securing gold in the Blue Belt Gi Medium-Heavyweight division and bronze in No-Gi. The competition was tough throughout, and it’s a testament to the growing standard of BJJ across the Armed Forces.”

The project was driven from start to finish by Corporal Wright, whose professionalism, determination and pride in delivery are evident in the outstanding result. A huge well done to Corporal Wright and the entire PEd team who made this impressive improvement possible.

On 3 March, the Royal Air Force took on the Royal Navy in InterServices Football. Through the kind generosity of Shrewsbury Town Football Club, the RAF host their ‘home’ game at the Croud Meadow.

No.1 Flying Training School’s delivery of the match ball by Juno helicopter is also a great pre-match spectacle.

Flight Sergeant Campbell opened the scoring with a well-taken diving header to put the RAF in the lead in the first half.

Congratulations go the Royal Navy, who eventually ran out as 3-1 winners.
