From management to entry level staff, our team’s ambition echoes through our walls. Amy Gibson’s 5 Tips on Choosing the Right Wig for You!

mmy nominated actress Amy Gibson was frightened when she discovered she had Alopecia Areata at the early age of 13 years old. After feeling lost for what felt like an eternity, Amy found her way and overcame her fear of going public about her condition. When she realized there were so many women out there who were lost with the same issue, Amy began the important conversation about hair loss for alopecia and cancer patients alike.

Amy is an inspiration to all women. She has helped over hundreds of cancer patients find themselves again. Amy says, “Since I had found a way beyond this, there was no thinking about it. It was something I had to do regardless of how uncomfortable it made me feel at first or how scared I was at the moment. I just kept thinking there must be so many women this will help that my own little world has got to be pushed aside right now.”

-Amy Gibson VogueWigs had the pleasure of sitting down with Amy Gibson to talk about how she helps women going through chemotherapy find the perfect wig. “The most common side effect of chemotherapy is hair loss,” Amy explains. It is important to take these steps to finding the wig you want. Amy says, “the main thing is to be prepared because women going through chemotherapy are already on information overload. So keep it simple.”

When you are ready to go shopping for your wig, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Here are the 5 steps to finding the perfect wig for you.

~Amy’s 5 Tips~ While you still have your hair, take some great photos of yourself in natural, outdoor lighting.

It is usually 3-4 days after you have lost your hair that you will have a hard time remembering the exact style and color of your hair. Having a photo of your hair will help you when you go shop for a wig.

Take some samples of your hair.

Keep in mind, the underneath nape hair is always darker than the top hair because how the sun hits our hair. Put your samples in separate plastic bags and label them ‘Top Hair’ and ‘Nape Hair.’

Lift up some of the wig hair while trying it on.

When you put on a wig in the store, if you can lift up 1/4 of the hair and look in the mirror, you’ll be able to see what you will look like when you get your wig styled the way you want. If you leave all that wig hair on top, it will distort the view of how the wig actually looks. Find a great stylist after you purchase your wig to replicate the look you are going for.

Look at the color of the wig natural lighting.

Amy says, “give the store your license and say ‘can I borrow this wig?’ Go outside in natural lighting with a hand-mirror.” To get the proper color, you have to look at the wig in natural, outdoor lighting only.

Try to see through your wig.

While going through chemotherapy and wearing a wig, feeling comfortable is very important. The last thing you want to do is buy a wig you want to rip off your head in 2 hours. Amy says, “hold [the wig] up to the light and if you can see through it, you can breathe through it.”

We’ll send you an envelope with a shipping label and a box for you to send us your wig in. Once we receive your wig, it will be washed, conditioned, and re-styled depending on the fiber type. When your wig has been renewed and refreshed, we’ll send it back to you.
