Breathe new life into your Springtime wardrobe with fabulous selections from our Spring Catalog. Begin with Reishi Chambray, a medium-weight, navy and white cross-woven cotton with timeless appeal. Choose this for sewing walking shorts, cropped pants, a golf skirt, a boxy springtime jacket, or an oversized button-down shirt to toss on over a tank. It’s so versatile that you will want to have plenty on hand for all your upcoming projects. It pairs beautifully with Reishi Blooms, a stretch-woven cotton print from Telio. We love how the bursts of red, peach, and white enliven the dark, muted indigo background. Whip up a simple shell, shirt, tunic, or scarf to wear with the chambray.
Reishi Scarlet comes to us from a supplier of fine European linens. This 5oz weight is ideal for sewing garments. To retain the crispness of the color and texture, dry clean. But if you prefer more casual attire, launder this in cold water with a brief burst (510 min) in a cool dryer. This type of laundering will tighten the weave through shrinkage while relaxing the fibers. Summer isn’t complete without a cool and comfortable linen top.

What substance has more in common with animals than plants, grows above and below ground, and has been used as food, medicine, and spiritual drugs for several millennia? If you screamed out “fungi!” please pat yourself on the back. So much can be written on the subject that we are limiting our scope to mushrooms, the fruit of the fungus, and specifically to a few key adaptogenic (medicinal) shrooms that have seen a fairly recent explosion in popularity. Fungi are heterotrophs like mammals, meaning they have to find food from other sources, unlike plants which create food through photosynthesis and carbon fixation. Mushrooms also breathe in oxygen and exhale CO2 like mammals. Mushrooms reproduce by spreading spores. They create their own wind during moisture evaporation which propels their spores into the air to be carried and spread onto new host substrates. Mycologists, people who study fungi, suspect that the 10,000 classified species of mushrooms are only a fraction of those that exist, with new species being discovered every year. Of the 3,000 known edible mushrooms, only 200 are cultivated as opposed to strictly foraged. Foraging is a cherished pastime that can have unfortunate consequences. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, between 2010-2016 there were over 37,000 reports of poisoning from foraged plants and mushrooms, resulting in 17 deaths by mushrooms. Don’t go messing around with the Death Cap Mushroom - it’s one of the deadliest organisms on Earth. Half of one will kill you. Conversely, two powerful antibiotics are derived from fungi: penicillin and streptomycin. Sit back and stir some powdered Maitake into your coffee while we expound upon the fungus among us. If you get chilly, toss on a jacket crafted from Reishi Cozy, the first of three water-repellent sweatshirt fleece fabrics in this catalog. Made for Patagonia by Polartec, these are high-quality fabrics that are selling quickly in our retail store. Reishi Cozy features a navy fleece reverse with a white face that appears more grey-white because of the navy peeking through.
This next fabric we pre-ordered for you months ago from Telio during its pre-release for Spring 2025. Since then, we have seen several fashions with this same concept of a bright red flower on a white background. Truly stunning. The weight and drape of Reishi Spring are similar to a fine challis, while the texture slightly mimics a handkerchief linen. What will you make with this? If you need a companion, we’ve got you covered. Reishi Fire is ready to be sewn into slacks, a straight skirt, a sheath dress, and a jacket. This washable stretch-woven is easy to sew and comfortable to wear.

Before recorded time, mushrooms were foraged and used as food, medicine, tools, and spiritual enhancers. In 1991, a well-preserved mummy was dug out of a melting glacier in the Ötzal Alps that border Austria and Italy. Lovingly called Ötzi, this 5300-year-old from the Copper Age is Europe’s oldest known mummy, preserved in time through natural mummification by freezing and being buried in snow and ice after he bled to death from a fatal, murderous wound. Archeologists found traces of two types of fungi that he had been carrying, including a dried mushroom he would have used as timber. Egyptian hieroglyphs depict mushrooms as far back as 4500 BCE, mostly the toxic amanita and the psychedelic psilocybe. The 1250 BCE Papyrus of Ani referred to mushrooms as the “food of the gods.” This sentiment was shared by ancient Greeks and Romans who referred to them as “gifts from Zeus,” and also as “sons of gods” since they had no seed. Members of the mycological community (mushroom lovers) believe that “the Greeks were religious mushroom trippers,” ingesting the psychedelic type to kick off ritual celebrations. Irish Druids, the religious thinkers of the Celts, also enjoyed some trippy shrooms, which were in season around Halloween. They referred to the fungi as the “flesh of God,” believing that eating them enhanced their connection to the divine. Celts referred to mushrooms growing in a circular pattern as fairy rings or pixie rings, and believed these spaces to have mystical powers. Reishi, the “mushroom of immortality,” found its way into the classic Ancient Chinese herbal text, the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, written around 200 BCE. Known as ling zhi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is believed to balance one’s Qi (pronounced Chee), which is one’s vital essence of both mind and body. “If eaten customarily, it makes your body light and young, lengthens your life, and turns you into one like the immortal who never dies.” According to Japanese legend, Maitake was known as the “dancing mushroom” because it was so rare people would dance with joy when they found it. Prized for its medicinal and culinary appeal, Maitake was worth its weight in silver. Peasant foragers would collect Maitake and exchange it with the feudal lords for coins. The feudal lords then presented the prized fungi as a gift to the big boss, the Shogun.

These two fabrics will cover all those bases easily. Chaga Onyx rayon challis is lightweight with a beautiful drape and a lovely softness. It feels amazing to wear as a top. If you would like to see more colors of this fabulous fabric, view our collection of Rayon Challis Solids online and order a swatch card to have on hand. Sew a boat-necked blouse from Chaga Onyx to wear with a skirt and jacket tailored from Chaga Surprise. This textured beauty looks amazing on both sides, so you can choose which you like best as the face, or use it reversibly as self-contracting panels. Did you see - it’s 100% Cotton!

Have fun putting together an ensemble with the first three fabrics in our Shiitake Collection. Large teal dots adorn the face of Shiitake Polka, a delicious poly-rayon double-knit. Its companion, Shiitake Dotz, features 1/8” ditzy dots on a black poly-spandex double knit. There’s a bit of texture on the small Dotz, making it a cute option for cuffs, banding, and accent panels. Tie the ensemble together by sewing all-purpose pants from Shiitake Onyx, a rich black stretchwoven cotton. This one feels so good to the touch you will want to wear it as a dress and summer walking shorts as well.
All mushrooms are fungi, but not all fungi are mushrooms, such as yeast and mold. Mushrooms are the fruit of the fungus, and the concentration of beneficial compounds are found in the head, as opposed to the stem and the mycelium (similar to a root system). Vegans often reach for mushrooms as a meat substitute because they are a leaner source of protein, have no fat or cholesterol, and are low in carbohydrates. Packed with fiber, edible varieties help people feel fuller longer, which is great when trying to lose weight. Medicinal varieties are adaptogens, meaning they help calm or balance the body when it is under stress and are non-toxic at normal consumption levels. Many adaptogenic mushrooms are not considered edible as culinary delights, being too bitter or tough. Practitioners dole these out dried for use in teas, or they can be powdered and added to food and beverages or taken as capsules. For thousands of years, the health benefits have been based on human observance of how people react when they ingest these medicinal mushrooms, but now scientific studies are confirming many of these long-held beliefs by defining the bioactive compounds, vitamins, and minerals, as well as performing regulated animal and human studies. In general, mushrooms are low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium, plus a great source of fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are abundant in complex B vitamins which fuel better metabolism and help maintain healthy skin and nerves. Mushrooms are a rare non-animal source of vitamin D, which supports bone health and the immune system by aiding the body in absorbing beneficial minerals. Their selenium content boosts the immune system by ramping up the production of T-cells to kill viruses and tumor cells. Although they are a fungus, they have anti-fungal and antibacterial properties which help fight disease and infection. Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming noticed that the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium wasn’t growing in the parts of a culture that had accidentally been contaminated with the green Penicillium notatum mold, leading to the development of the life-saving Penicillin anti-biotic.
Moving from teal to indigo, check out Shiitake Peekaboo, a crinkled knit with eyelet-style embroidery. It feels like a gauzy cotton knit, but it is washable polyester, ideal for sewing a relaxed fit, casual top.
Our final water repellent option in this issue comes in delightful indigo/ teal. Choose Shiitake Cozy when you want to sew a hoodie for the kids and a zip-front jacket for yourself. This one is 2 yards wide! Lay your pattern pieces out side by side and see if you can get all of them cut from one length of fabric.

Maitake Collection
The six most popular medicinal mushrooms in the US are Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Maitake, Shiitake, Chaga, and Cordyceps, and they are proving to be powerhouses for fighting many common health battles. Turkey Tail and Lion’s Mane contain lectin, a protein that binds to cancer cells and sends up a red flag to the immune system to fight and destroy these invaders. Lentinan in Shiitake can “suppress the growth and spread of leukemia cells.” The high fiber in mushrooms helps to lower blood glucose levels, causing mushrooms to become popular prebiotic foods that enhance the gut microbiome. Beta-glucans, a type of dietary fiber, can stimulate immune function, which is great in most people but could pose a problem in individuals with autoimmune diseases if taken in too much quantity. Chaga is high in antioxidants, low in sodium, and high in potassium, helping to “lower blood pressure, as well as your risk of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular conditions.” The part of Chaga that is used medicinally is not the mushroom but its canker that appears on the outside of a dying birch tree. Cordyceps, the “zombie” parasitic fungi, is used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat fatigue, kidney disease, respiratory sickness, and low sex drive. Scientists are finding clinical evidence that supports what these practitioners have observed for centuries. Medicinal mushrooms are a complete source of complex B-vitamins, which positively affect metabolism and brain function, and promote healthy skin while helping to “convert food into energy and support the nervous system.” Maitake appears on lists of beneficial mushrooms for treating high blood pressure, balancing cholesterol, fighting cancer, boosting the immune system, and treating diabetes. Both Maitake and Shiitake are edible and delicious in stir-fried dishes and soups. Reishi, the mushroom of immortality, is a powerhouse, with over 400 bioactive compounds that boost the immune system and help bodily functions operate properly. Mushrooms contain all nine essential amino acids our bodies need, which can not be said of most non-meat foodstuffs, making them an important addition to any vegan diet. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a report titled Edible Mushrooms and Beta-Glucans: Impact on Human Health, wherein they state, “The growing knowledge on the mechanism(s) and health benefits of mushrooms is encouraging the development of a potential clinical use of β-glucans, and also to further document their role in preserving health and prevent disease in the context of healthy lifestyles.”

How to Care For Your Fabrics
The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Turkey Collection
Magic mushrooms are making a comeback, this time on the upand-up in clinical settings. Their psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin contents cause hallucinations, which gained popularity in the 1960s with the Hippy culture. Taken in large doses, people hallucinate, experience enhanced senses like seeing colors more vividly, and perceive a significantly meaningful spiritual experience that could last four to six hours. Now the same compounds are being studied as a psychiatric aid for treating mood disorders. Rather than “tripping” on large doses, clinicians are administering micro-doses to patients every few days, providing the benefits of the mushroom compounds without the hallucinations, paranoia, fear, and bad trips. Patients report improvement in their moods, increased energy, better mental focus, and creative bursts. Those challenged by ADHD also noted improvement in their mood and concentration. Psilocybin works to restore the body’s balance of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that helps with mood regulation often deficient in people with mood disorders. Although associated with the brain, 90% of serotonin is found in the gut and is a by-product of the amino acid tryptophan. In the USA, some states and local municipalities are working to decriminalize magic mushrooms, including California, Colorado, Michigan, Oregon, Washington DC, and Washington state. The US Federal Government still classifies psilocybin as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, so don’t carry any magic mushrooms outside of a protected local area. Canada has legalized hallucinogenic mushrooms in clinical settings for people diagnosed with mental health disorders, as well as for palliative care in end-of-life patients to “alleviate existential anxiety.” When foraging for mushrooms, check for bruising. According to CurativeMushrooms.com, “One of the biggest telling points of whether a mushroom contains psilocybin or not is if it bruises a bluish color caused by psilocin activity within it. If it bruises blue to almost black in color and has a spore print that is between a purple-brown to rusty-brown color then you can be almost certain that you have found a psilocybin mushroom.” Many of the 180 hallucinogenic mushrooms grow wild throughout the United States.

The same company that provided the previous collection also manufactured the four solid fabrics in our Turkey Collection. Check out how soft the washing process makes these laundered linen-rayon blends. Laundering the blend also helps reduce the look of wrinkles. Choose these whenever your pattern calls for a medium-weight woven fabric for tops, light jackets, dresses, skirts, and slacks.
Turkey Paprika (page 23) begins our collection with a muted burnt orange that perfectly coordinates with the flowers of Turkey Impressions, a digital watercolor floral print rayon challis. The muted undertones feature a grey that is picked up by Turkey Ash. Tell a story with these three in one outfit.

For two years, greens have been super popular in our retail store and online. We thought Turkey Forest 100% linen was a fabulous solid option to wear with Turkey Geo digital rayon challis print. Both of these fabrics can be dry cleaned to retain their initial integrity, or cold washed and line dried for a softer look. The geometric design of the challis dynamically swirls together shades of green, orange, yellow, and brown.

Mix and match your mustard separates with a blouse or dress sewn from Turkey Dali, an exceptional rayon print from Telio & Cie. They have digitally printed the watercolor design. For those of you who prefer to sew wovens to knits, choose the Gold color of Felix Stretch Gabardine from our website as a light neutral bottom-weight.

Lion Collection
Have you seen mushroom coffee at your local grocery store or coffee house? Adding adaptogenic mushroom powder to coffee, tea, and hot cocoa is trending. Starbucks has offered mushroom blends for over a year, including Chaga Charger, Reconnection Macchiato, and Serendipity Latte. North Spore, Shroom Supply, and Fungi Farm are a few of the many companies selling a wide range of mushroom growing kits so you can harvest fresh mushrooms all year at home, indoors and out. A plethora of companies are selling powders and capsules directly to consumers so they get their fix at home and on the go. RealMushrooms.com would caution potential buyers to read the labels carefully, as not all powders and capsules are created equally. Many companies harvest the mushroom caps along with the stems, mycelium, and grain fibers, instead of harvesting just the mushroom cap where all the goodness lies. Before buying the powders and capsules, make sure they are grown organically, verified for the active compounds you want, and free from fillers that dilute the potency. When looking into mushrooms for health benefits, consult a doctor, clinician, or someone trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The TCM practitioners will often have an apothecary full of dried plants for treating all types of ailments. Or, just eat some fresh mushrooms. Ground up a large portabella with canned black beans to make a ground beef substitute. Slice shiitake into a bone broth with scallions, water chestnuts, bok choi, cubed firm tofu, and a small sheet of Kombu seaweed for a restorative soup. Scoop a mixture of minced mushroom stems, garlic, shallots, panko breadcrumbs, Italian herbs, and olive oil into mushroom caps brushed with olive oil and bake until warm but still firm.
We may be done with winter, but she is not always ready to go. Lion Loops is a perfect ribbed, boucle sweater knit to toss on when Mother Nature can’t make up her mind between hot flashes and the chills. Play around with angling the ribs in different directions for some design interest.

For sophisticated, urban contemporary styling, turn to Lion Chic rayon challis. The grey and black abstract design pulls together hard and soft edges, making this an ideal choice for tops with handkerchief hems and origami skirts with plenty of folds.
Lion Graphite is our top pick for a transitional woven. On cooler days, wear this as a classic button-down top over a challis shell, and when the weather warms make sure you sew this into walking shorts or a shirtdress.
We are excited to present to you Lion Couture, an outstanding viscose stretch-woven damask with beautiful texture and design. For an elegant evening out, sew a two-piece ensemble of a boxy jacket and knee-length skirt worn with a blouse from the following satin. If your styling is more funky than classic, design a 3/4 length jacket and use the reverse as a design element for the cuffs, collar, belt, or side panels. Which is the reverse and which is the face?
That is totally up to you. Use the nap layout.
