Love Collection Let’s play Jeopardy!® for a moment. The answer: This holiday has pagan origins, is named for a Catholic Saint, and is identifiable by a cherub who was originally a hunky Greek god. If you yelled out “What is Valentine’s Day?!” you’d win the points.

Well done! Every February, our TVs fill with ads for engagement rings, stores are decked in red, bouquets of roses skyrocket in price, and there is no escaping the enormous amount of cards and candies at every drug store. But how much do you know about this holiday? No, it was not created by Hallmark®, although it is their second most lucrative holiday. Sit back and enjoy our musings of this day steeped in centuries of romance and intrigue. Our journey begins in Ancient Rome, where they had a god and a festival for virtually every occasion. Fertility and purification were celebrated in February during Lupercalia. Varying origin stories exist for this unusual fete. Some historians say the festival celebrated the she-wolf who raised the city’s founders, Romulus and Remus (wolf in Latin is lupus), and others say the festival honored the Roman god of fertility, Lupercus. What evolved was a three day event beginning with the sacrifice of male goats and a dog by Roman priests called Luperci - the goats represented male sexuality. Two of the Lupercus were then sent into the streets of Rome, naked other than the sacrificial blood painted on their faces, tasked with slapping women with strips from the hides of the sacrificial goats to grant them fertility, which the women reportedly welcomed. Lupercalia ran from February 13-15. We would like to point out that these magically fertile strips of hide were called februa, as in February.

Love Night comes to us from a cutting room in the New York Fashion District. Look closely and you will see this double-faced textile is a poplin-backed twill. Use this for your patterns that call for a medium to heavy weight woven, such as jackets, and constructed dresses.

Now for something different - a winter linen. See how the floral pattern pops against the black background? We envision Love Bouquet as a long-sleeved over-shirt, long dress, boxy jacket, and straight skirt, all ready to wear when the crocuses pop through the spring snow.

Saint Collection As one legend goes, the Roman Emperor Claudius II, harbored disdain for Christians. He also preferred unmarried soldiers who were free from the distraction of wives and children. He found a solution to both issues and outlawed Christian marriages, then conscripted the single men. A priest named Valentinus came to the aid of young lovers by performing several Christian nuptuals in secret. Claudius caught wind of this and sentenced Valentinus to death. While imprisoned, the priest befriended a young woman, possibly the jail keeper’s daughter, and allegedly sent her a letter signed in the Latin equivalent of, “From your Valentine.” He was beheaded by the Romans in 270 CE. This story is not supported by the Catholic Education Resource Center. They contend St. Valentine was one of two priestly physicians who brought comfort to martyrs during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. The CERC states, “St. Valentine was also arrested, condemned to death for his faith, beaten with clubs, and finally beheaded on February 14, AD 270.” There are many more stories of various priests named Valentine or Valentinus from the early Christian era, which causes further confusion. The Catholic Church removed the feast of St. Valentine from the liturgical calendar, ironically, on February 14, 1969.

Whatever the actual details may be, the arc of the origin story is that of a martyred priest who celebrated secret love.

We did not swatch Saint Ribbon for the catalog because its fabrication makes it problematic for the diecutter. Subscribers can request a free swatch. Satin ribbons are stitched to a mesh, the mesh is stitched to an ITY knit, and the entire fabric is dyed in a dramatic, diagonal design. Lengthwise stitching occurs every 4”, securing the mesh & ribbon layer to the ITY backing. Show off the design by sewing a boxy blouse, a shell, or a skirt with just two side seams. Keep the design simple to showcase the ribbon design.

Use them together in colorblocked or piece-work garments, or showcase them as separate garments in a single ensemble. Eros Collection Love is one of our stongest emotions. It stands to reason that the Greek god of love and sex, Eros, should be a sexy young hearthrob. After all, eros is the Greek word for desire. His origin story evolved over the centuries, beginning as a primeval son of Chaos, eventually becoming the son of the goddess of sexual love and beauty, Aphrodite. According to the History Channel, “In the poetry of the Archaic period, Eros was represented as a studly immortal who was irresistible to both man and gods.”

His quiver was full of golden arrows that jolted his target to feel love and desire, while his lead arrows had quite the opposite effect: “sowing aversion.” He was a rascal, wreaking mayhem on earth and on Mount Olympus. Romans adopted many of the Greek gods as their own, tweaking their names and storylines to fit their cultural narritive. Aphrodite and Eros became Venus and Cupid. Yes, Cupid originally was very studly, but what hearthrob does all the bidding of his mother unquestioningly?

His depictions began to get younger and younger, until finally he was infantalized as the cute cherub we see in today’s Valentine’s Day imagery.

How to Care For Your Fabrics The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Foule Collection We have covered the historical origin of Valentine’s Day, but when was it first celebrated as a day for romance, a day other than a feast day for a Saint? Prior to the 14th century, there is no evidence of romantic Valentine’s Day celebrations. In the late 1300s, Geoffrey Chaucer, the “Father of Modern English Literature,” wrote Parliament of Foules, which loosley translates to “assembly of fowls” (but sounds more like a gathering of fools). An epic poem of 699 lines presents a sort of dreamscape narritive during which birds choose their mates. According to Britannica, “The narrator falls asleep and dreams of a beautiful garden in which Nature presides over a debate between three high-ranking eagles, all vying for the attentions of a beautiful female. The other birds, each of which represents a different aspect of English society, are given a chance to express their opinions; Chaucer uses this device to gently satirize the tradition of courtly love.” Chacer wrote, “For this was sent on Seynt Valentyne’s day / Whan every foul cometh ther to choose his mate.” If Valentine’s Day was good enough for birds to pair off romantically, why not members of society? Since books and poems were not massed produced in Europe for another century, Chaucer’s work originally made the rounds through the nobility who could afford such luxuries, and saw themselves reflected cheekily in his musings.

Although the first two fabrics come from different sources, they look like they were made for each other. Manufactured to compete with Kaufman’s Arietta, Foule Chill is a Premium Ponte de Roma from another source, with a hand and stretch comparable to the industry standard set by Kaufman, in a color Kaufman does not produce.

The color blends beautifully with Foule Marble, a lovely rayon print that incorporates shades of mauve, ruby, coral, blue, and grey on a warm cream base. The weight is similar to the Telio rayon poplin watercolor fabrics we featured earlier in this catalog.

After you’ve sewn your new mauve Ponte pants and marbled blouse, wrap yourself in the second of our highly anticipated sweatshirt knits, Foule Cozy. Look closely at the heathered face of Foule Cozy and you will see the flecks are pale putty and rose on warm cream, while the reverse is pale putty. The crinkled effect and delicate printing make Foule Gossamer poly chiffon look like silk. Underline with an opaque peachskin or pongee when you cut the bodice, but leave the sleeves sheer for a beautiful design element on a new blouse. Or sew a sheer top and swap out different tank tops, bandeaus, or shells underneath to create different effects. You can also whip up a large scarf with rolled hems to wear with a jacket and dress tailored from Foule Steel, a stretch-woven cotton and polyester blend poplin in Oxford gray. Fleur Collection One of Western culture’s most enduring love stories is Shakespear’s tragic Romeo and Juliet. From rival families, the young lovers are kept apart by their parents. While standing on her iconic balcony, Juliet laments that Romeo’s familial name of Montague is not the sum of the man: “What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot/Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part/Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!/What’s in a name? That which we call a rose/by any other name would smell as sweet.” Although there is this wonderful connection of a rose and forbidden love, roses did not become the booming Valentine’s Day business we know today until a different Montegu, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1682-1762), wrote about the “hidden language of flowers.”

Living in the Ottoman Empire as wife to the British Embassador, Lady Mary wrote about the use of flowers as a way for men and women to send messages to each other, with each color and bloom assigned an emotion, running the full gamut of human espression. This language is known as floriography. Half a century after Lady Mary’s death, Madame Charlotte De la Tour penned Le langage des Fleurs, the first dictionary of floriography, in 1819. The work inspired Englishman Robert Tyas who published his own version called The Sentiment of Flowers in 1836.

These works fuled the fire of hidden passion in Victorian England, when each color and blossom were given as a coded message between lovers, secret admirers, forbidden couples, and flirtatious love-matched spouses. Although floriography covers many types of floral specimins, we present a tiny guide to roses. A yellow rose means joy and friendship, a pink rose signifies joy and grace, the red rose stands for love and respect, and a single rose tells the recipient “I love you.” Today’s flower shops would prefer you believe that three dozen roses say the

The navy is picked up in Fleur Ziggy, making them a perfect pair. If you received our Winter 2023 catalog, you saw two other colors of the Ziggy knit. Its face features a striped, geometric design in shades of indigo, taupe, seafoam, periwinkle, and black. The reverse is a tone-on-tone black animal spot design.

This is an ideal fabric for patterns where the reverse will show, like waterfall-front jackets, origami skirts, hi-low tops, and handkerchief hems. Sew a dress from Fleur Navy and a light sweater top from Fleur Ziggy as a cute and quick ensemble. Of course, all of the fabrics in this collection look great with jeans, so we found a supple, soft, lightweight stretch denim and named it Fleur Chambray. Make a man’s workshirt, embroider a spring jacket, create a cute romper, and stitch up some stretch-woven jeans. At 67” wide, you can lay out more pattern pieces side by side and use less yardage. Cards Collection Victorian England is credited with popularizing cards sent on Valentine’s Day. Early cards were decorated with lace, feathers, tinsel and flowers, according to the Hallmark Cards’ archivist, Samantha Bradbeer. Postal reform came to Britain on January 10, 1840, with the creation of the Penny Post. This allowed anyone to send mail for one cent postage, opening the mail system to the common people. In February 1841, “the public sent nearly half a million valentines.” The Penny Post allowed people to mail letters and postcards anonymously, which created an explosion of secret admirers, as well as “Vinegar Valentines.” These cheeky, often vulgar, postcards were used to taunt and insult the recipient. The British post confiscated thousands, deaming them too vulgar for polite society. Vinegar Valetines resulted in more than jilted love, inciting fist fights, court cases, suicide, and murder. Across the pond in the US, Halls Bros sold their first Valentines Cards in 1913. A fire destroyed their inventory in 1915, leading them to purchase their own printing equipment and mass produce their cards, eventually rebranding under the name Hallmark®. According to Hallmark®, “Approximately 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged,” each year, not incuding the packaged cards handed out in classrooms. This number is only surpassed

by Christmas cards. On February 14, take a moment to give yourself some love. Fill a vase full of red camellia (meaning “unpretending excellence”), and make a date with your sewing machine to complete a new ensemble that will fill your heart with joy. Happy sewing everyone!
