Summer Lovin’

Get ready for fun this year. We’ve packed this issue full of fantastic textures, most of which are natural fiber based to help you feel and look cool.

Summer 2023

Begin your summer sewing with a pop of color from Reef Jersey, a medium-weight combed cotton knit ideal for tops as well as yoga pants, dresses, and skirts. It brings out the hot pink color in Reef Tropics, the inspiration for the Reef Collection. This magnificent rayon challis is ideal for a tunic, sundress, flowing skirt, and widelegged pants. The rich color of the leaves is picked up in a mediumweight textured cotton gauze called Reef Jade. It’s just tempting you to make a loose top, baggy pants, or a cool dress to wear on hot days.

Reef Collection

Some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes are situated offshore, underwater, acting as a home, rest stop, or breeding ground to a spectacular range of creatures great and small. These are the coral reefs, home to millions of species of animal and plant life worldwide. Barrier and fringing reefs run parallel to a shoreline, with a lagoon separating the two masses. Atolls began as fringing or barrier reefs surrounding an island, but often the island has submerged, leaving a lagoon in its place. Platform, or patch reefs, grow on a continental shelf sometimes between fringing and barrier reefs. Each type of reef serves as a feeding and breeding ground for countless, even undiscovered, species of ocean-dwelling creatures from enormous whales to microscopic plankton. Acting as a protective barrier for a nearby landmass, reefs can reduce the force of impactful waves by 97%, delaying erosion. Reef-building corals require warm waters, 73°-84°F (23°-29°C), plus they need salt, light, and CO2. Although they look like stony figures, corals are actually animals, invertebrate polyps to be exact, that build a protective exoskeleton, eat small creatures, and some even reproduce by shooting eggs and sperm into the water. But we are in danger of losing these incredible ecosystems through climate change which is warming the waters and changing the salinity of the water, and pollution which is making it harder for marine biology to photosynthesize. Every ecosystem is a balance, and if too much is harvested or destroyed, all reef life is put at risk.

Milled in Italy, and purchased as deadstock from a New York workroom, Reef Shirting merges jade, dark teal, bright lime, light blue, white, and navy. Cool down when you cover up in a shirt stitched from Reef Foam. Whether you whip up a shell to wear under the plaid shirting, or you construct a recital shirt to keep your arms from burning in the sun or freezing in air conditioning, you can’t go wrong when you add a wardrobe staple from this white cotton. It embroiders beautifully.

Reef Bubbles begs to be converted into an overlay, creating a fun summer top, skirt, dress, or pants with a pop of color. Hi-multi chiffons have a finer weave and a more elegant finish than other chiffons. We love how perfectly the bubbles pull in all the colors of the challis and the upcoming reversible gauze. Wear your new top with Capris stitched from Reef Citrine, a stretchwoven cotton that is soft to the touch and delicious to wear. We show Reef Citrine as a top, pants, and the underlayer of the chiffon pants.

Another fun option to wear with your new citrine pants is Reef Beachcomber. We received 24 color combinations in this reversible cotton gauze collection, some of which have been chosen for an episode of the new TV program Fabric to Fashion starring Angela Wolf. View all the colors on our website coming soon!

Reef Beachcomber features both a plaid and a check cotton gauze that have been stitched together. Light, airy, breathable, and cool, choose this fabric to wear while chilling in the heat of summer.

If it’s time to sew a new summer jacket, look no further than Diverse Twill, a 67” wide cotton in classic khaki. Get extra yardage for slacks and shorts. Its color is picked up in Diverse Nitro as an accent to the fuchsia, grey, lavender, pink, yellow, and white flowers. Over the past few years, we have featured several of these 68” wide rayon jersey knits because they feel amazing against the skin, and have lovely drape and flow.

Diverse Collection

Referred to as “The rain forests of the seas,” coral reefs contain approximately 25% of the world’s marine life, making them among the most biodiverse of any natural habitat. Scientists and marine biologists continue to discover new species of plants and animals. Over 4000 species of fish live, spawn, and feed in the world’s reefs, attracting millions of people who venture to the reefs for snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, and conservation efforts. Reefs form on plateaus, elevated from the colder depths of the ocean, where sunshine can be photosynthesized by aquatic plants. The colder ocean waters are warmed by the sun over the reef, creating an underwater micro-climate allowing the growth and development of plants and coral over thousands of years. Schools of fish, bales of turtles, and pods of dolphins and whales visit the reefs on their annual migrations. Be careful when visiting reefs in Florida and the Caribbean so you don’t encounter the venomous Spotfin Lionfish. Clownfish, like Disney’s Nemo, adapt themselves to live hidden in the tentacles of stinging anemones without themselves getting stung. Hundreds of thorns adorn the Crown of Thorns Starfish which eat coral, sometimes at a detrimental rate. Measuring less than an inch tall, and blending into its gorgonian coral host, lives the pygmy seahorse, a protected species in Australia. David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef documentary is worth watching to see the reef’s beauty and dangers, while also coming to understand why conservation efforts are needed.

Great Copy Patterns #2570

The Baja Skirt is a timeless classic with flowing lines that compliment any figure. The updated style features a longer yoke with the first tier falling below the hip. View A has a lined fitted yoke with side zipper that sits below the waist. Instructions are included for both lapped and invisible zipper applications. View B is a pull-on skirt with an elastic waist that sits at your natural waist. Designed for soft fabrics such as gauze, challis, batiste, eyelet, batik etc., the skirt can be customized many ways by shortening or lengthening the ruffles, eliminating the lower ruffle for a shorter skirt and more. Use different colors for an ombre look or add lace for a Bohemian flair.

As a bottom-weight option to coordinate with the cotton lawn print, choose Diverse Sky for skirts, slacks, or a sheath dress. Purchased as deadstock from a New York design house, this medium-weight polyester crepe has great body, elegant drape, and subtle texture. Plus, it’s a fantastic washand-wear wrinkle-resistant option for those of you planning to travel.

We couldn’t resist adding this cotton-rich, lightweight jersey knit. At 66” wide, Diverse Savannah will only need one yard for sewing most short sleeve tops. The underlying knit is styled on a subtle diagonal, which is a background design effect - the print is not on a diagonal. Line up the grainline of the pattern pieces parallel to the selvages.

Anthozoa Collection

Sea anemones, seafans, sea pens, and corals are all included in the class of invertebrates called Anthozoa. We chose “Anthozoa” as the name for this collection because calling it “coral” would get confusing since none of the fabrics are coral in color. But let’s dive into what coral is. Some people think of coral as stony figures, others think of them as plants waving in the tidal waters. They are actually colonies of hundreds, or thousands, of tiny invertebrate animals, called polyps living in calcium carbonate structures they build. They have no brain so they feel no pain, and they eat and expel waste through a single hole. This hole is surrounded by tentacles that sting and capture unsuspecting prey floating by at night, such as plankton and brine shrimp. Coral needs sunlight for photosynthesis, the fuel that helps digest food and produce their skeletal structure. After spending the day hidden inside the structure, the polyps emerge at night, waving back and forth. One structure may be home to hundreds of polyps, creating a spectacular display, like flowers and grasses waving in the gentle summer breeze. Structures vary greatly in appearance and color. Tree branches, lacy fans, oyster mushrooms, salt pillars, and brains have been used to describe some of the many shapes the calcium carbonate takes. Asexual corals reproduce by dividing, but the other corals reproduce in spectacular fashion. Based on water temperature and the lunar cycle, a coral reef will see millions of eggs and sperm expelled from that single hole (the one used for eating and excrement). These synchronized eruptions have been described as an “underwater snowstorm” and “the world’s largest orgasm.” Successfully fertilized eggs produce larvae which in turn become polyps. Mortality is high, with fish and crustaceans gobbling up the eggs - a veritable feeding frenzy.

This is an all-season style that will be extremely versatile in your wardrobe.

Anthozoa Waters is a pale variation of the stronger aqua in the tweed, and it is the slightly more minty version of the robin’s egg blue crepe in the previous collection. We highly recommend choosing Anthozoa Waters as a base layer under Anthozoa Seabreeze stretch lace. When cutting the lace fabric, lay your pattern pieces out width-wise rather than lengthwise, allowing the stretch to wrap around your body. To calculate the yardage you need, simply lay your pattern pieces out side by side and measure the widest part from left to right. You will need less fabric this way, and at $5.99 per yard, you can take a chance sewing outside your comfort level.

Japan leads the way in responsibly harvesting from their precious reefs to convert aquatic plants and animals into medicines, such as extracting kainic acid from reef seaweed for use in treating Huntington’s chorea, a fatal disease of the nervous system. Vietnam believes seahorses can cure impotence. According to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), “Coral reef plants and animals are important sources of new medicines being developed to treat cancer, arthritis, human bacterial infections, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, viruses, and other diseases.” Red coral is prized for its stunning appearance, and over-harvesting has devastated the supply. Protective measures are in place to preserve reefs with responsible harvesting by licensed entities. Poachers are hard to catch, so often the resellers in tourist destinations are impacted with fines if they can not prove the origins of their coral pieces. Hawai’i boasts the world’s largest protected aquatic area with 140,000 square miles of the Maro Coral Reef within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Red coral is one of the world’s most popular coral for jewelry and is highly regulated in South Asia where smugglers traffic coral in the same manner a cartel transports drugs. The CITES Treaty has regulated the international trade of endangered species for 50 years, with 184 countries participating. Not all harvesting is illegal. Florida has some designated areas set aside for responsible harvesting, and entrepreneurs farm coral for sale. Tropical fish tanks grew in popularity after Disney’s Finding Nemo was released in 2005. LED lighting made it easier to own small tropical fish tanks since the lights don’t throw off as much heat as previous options, leading to a boom in coral hobbyists. In turn, coral farming (or coral gardening), known as aquaculture, has developed to help supply commercial needs as well as aid in reef restoration.

How to Care For Your Fabrics

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Bane Collection

Many species of coral and reef life have developed clever, even toxic, methods of defense to ensure self-preservation. In the Pacific and Indian Oceans lives the tiny but deadly blueringed octopus. Less than a hand-width in size, its venom is powerful enough to kill two dozen humans in minutes. Moray eels do not produce their own venom, but ciguatoxin can accumulate if they eat venomous algae, or fish that eat the venomous algae. The ciguatoxin is only dangerous to humans who eat these affected eels. One of the most venomous fish in the world lies in wait for its prey, camouflaged by the rocky landscape of the reefs. The Stonefish remains still for hours until an unsuspecting fish or invertebrate draws near and the stonefish opens its impressive jaws creating a vacuum, inhaling its meal. Sea anemones can produce toxins that they use to stun prey. But the tiny clownfish (yes, Nemo) has developed a protective coating that allows them to live and hide from predators inside anemones. Between 2012-2014, the Centers for Disease Control reported ten cases in Alaska alone related to people suffering reactions to toxins released by zoanthid corals. This type of poisoning can occur when the coral is touched, when coral is disturbed by tank cleaning, and when the coral is removed from the water prompting coral to aerosolize toxic spores which are then breathed in by humans.

Seersucker has been so hard to come by this summer, but we found two for this collection! Bane Multi should be lined for a loose dress, or craft an unlined tunic to wear over a tank top or bandeau. The colored stripes are each 1.875” wide, the white stripes are 11/16” wide, and the total repeat of the color pattern is 8.875”. This fabric is a great value, at 62” wide and only $5.99 per yard. Skip ahead to Bane Seersucker for a classic mint and white 100% cotton option from Robert Kaufman’s fashion division. These are ready to be sewn into tops and shorts for fun in the sun!

Both seersuckers coordinate with Bane Mint (page 25), a color we picked from our Classic Ponte di Roma Collection. Are you more of a jewel-tone person? No worries, we have included Bane Jade as our PDR knit option for you! Both pontes are medium-weight, tightly knit, yet soft to the touch. Buy these for creating pull-on pants, princess-seamed tops and dresses, straight cardigans, and leggings. View more colors on our website.

The jade picks up on the subtle undertones in Bane Motif, another of our lightweight, extra-wide rayon jersey knits. Pale mint, subdued jade, and bursts of iced marine blue make up this novelty print.

Tidal Collection

The Great Barrier Reef off the east coast of Australia was created after the last Ice Age, when the glaciers began melting, raising the sea level 130 meters over the last 18,000 years. The indiginous Yidindji in Cairns chant an oral history about when they lived on the land that is now the reef until the water swallowed the area, causing them to move inland. Scientists verify the history, which is similar to other histories told by at least eighteen other indiginous people along Australia’s coast. Australia isn’t alone regarding topigraphical changes and reef development. Covering over 2.2million square miles, The Coral Triangle of the Pacific Ocean is comprised of 30% of the world’s coral reefs, and is reported “to be 10 times as biodiverse as Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.” During the last Ice Age, oceanic water evaportaed, becoming snow covering inland areas of North America and Europe. Over centuries, the snow increased, compacted the lower portions into ice, and repeated the process. The sea level dropped, until the earth’s temperatures began to rise, melting the snow pack, which flooded into the rivers and back into the oceans. Think about the current situation in California with the impending flooding of the snow pack that resulted from a springtime series of atmospheric rivers emerging from the Pacific. The thousands of islands that make up the Philippines and Indonesia were once more of a giant penninsula, until the glaciers melted and the sea levels rose. The reefs developed where former landmass was devoured by rising sea levels.

Add mellow earth tones to your wardrobe with this rouge and avocado collection. Tidal Rouge is the last of the Ponte knits in this catalog. It can stand alone or be color blocked with other similar ponte knits. We envision it as knit slacks worn with a flowing blouse sewn from Tidal Floral. Look how perfectly the rouge and avocado colors of the print match the other fabrics in this collection. Rayon Challis has such an elegant flow and drape. You can also sew it into Liesl Gibson’s new Sintra Halter top to wear with her new Cannes Wide-Legged Trousers sewn from Tidal Avocado, a 100% rayon in a linen-weave. This new sewing pattern allows the drape and flow of this rayon to really come through.

You can also wear Tidal Avocado as a camisole under a short sleeve top made from Tidal Lace. Because there is more stretch running the length of the fabric, we recommend you lay your pattern pieces out crosswise instead of lengthwise to take advantage of that, as well as the scalloped edges for easy and sophisticated hems. If you would prefer a Ponte knit in this color as a coordinate, choose the Duffle from our Classic Ponte di Roma Collection.

Presenting Tidal Blush, a lighter shade of rouge in the same rayon linen weave as #39 & #22. For a structured garment, use lining to give it more body. We think it will look sharp as Folkwear’s Hollywood pants worn with Angela Wolf’s Lacy Knit Top. The top features a knit structure with lace inlay, perfect for combining Tidal Lace with Tidal Shirr. Don’t you just love the simplicity and texture of the smocked look in the shirred knit? This style is on trend right now.

Climate Collection

Having developed over thousands of years, reefs are a delicate ecosystem, requiring constancy of sunlight, temperature, PH level, and saline. Climate change and pollution are creating a destructive imbalance. Dramatic colors of coral are produced by tiny algae that grow in the translucent tissue of coral polyps. This algae, called zooxanthellae, photosynthesize the coral’s waste, thus feeding itself while creating oxygen and carbohydrates consumed by the coral. Ocean temperatures have been rising, and the PH and saline levels are changing, causing coral polyps to expel the algae, leaving the coral skeleton white in a process called “bleaching.” Pollution clouds the water, which hinders the photosynthesis of reef plants and animals. Not just pollution from human waste, but also from hurricanes and other powerful storms which churn the water, creating murky conditions that block the sunlight. It’s the oceanic equivalent of a farmer affected by ash from a volcanic eruption. Life is disrupted, food sources are destroyed, and breathing conditions are impacted. Cyclonic activity and intensity have been increasing as the earth grows warmer and an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic has made its way to the oceans in the last twelve years. Ways we can all help curb the climate crises include reducing or eliminating single-use plastic: use storage containers instead of plastic wrap and baggies, use refillable bottles and cups, and use a refillable K-cup instead of tossing hundreds of plastic Kcups into landfills each year. Reduced demand will result in reduced production and waste.

Our last two fabrics can be worn together, in combination with the other fabrics in this collection, or as stand-alone garments. Both are medium-weight, coarsely woven Kolkata Gauze. Designers love working with these fabrics because they have more body than regular, lightweight, gossamer gauze. Sew loose, drawcord pants from Climate Blanche and add a big, rolled cuff at the bottom to give the pants some weight at the hem. Make a cold-shoulder top from Climate Noire to wear with the white pants when you dine al fresco. Chic, seasonally appropriate, and easy. All summer garments should be so wonderful!
