Adamas Collection Invisible. Indomitable. Invincible. These are fantastic qualities for a superhero, right? These are the translations for the Greek adamas from which we get the word diamond (and Wolverine’s adamantium claws). In this issue, our theme is the glittering, impregnable brilliance of diamonds. Henry Kissinger reportedly said, “A diamond is a chunk of coal that did well under pressure,” which is a great visual, but not completely accurate. According to Chicago’s Gage Diamonds, coal and diamonds are both formed underground through a process of high heat and high pressure, but coal forms closer to the earth’s surface and is comprised of carbon and plant matter, whereas diamonds were formed millions of years ago in the earth’s lithosphere around 90-240 miles below the earth’s surface, and they are purely carbon. According to Master Jewelers in Indiana, “the carbon atoms bond in a unique way that results in diamonds’ beautiful and rare crystalline structure.” Through volcanic eruptions, the crystals were brought to the earth’s surface and are found in or near deposits in countries like India, Brazil and South Africa. As the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth, the only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. On the Vickers Hardness Scale, steel registers about 55-120HV5, while diamond tops the chart at 10,000HV. These glittering beauties also have an impressively high melting point and boiling point, at 6420°F and 8720°F respectively. For a frame of reference, the exterior of a space shuttle will heat up to nearly 3000°F upon reentry to the earth’s atmosphere. Anyone else thinking about pulling a Liberace on the next round trip flight to the International Space Station and bedazzling the heck out of a rocket?

We know that many of you prefer to wear natural fibers whenever possible, so we found a sandwashed cotton twill in midnight navy from a US mill. Wear Adamas Bel Air (page 5) as slacks or a skirt, or stitch up a jeans jacket. It will embroider superbly, so go crazy and embellish a coordinating tote bag.

Treat yourself to Adamas Heather, a sumptuous sweater knit that combines rayon and acrylic in undulating hues of light and dark indigo. Feel your swatch. You will want to wear this every day.

Moving from indigo to pink, we brighten the mood with our Lore Collection. The first four fabrics are comprised of two wide rayon knits, and two cotton rib knits.

Lore Horizon and Lore Striation feature the same shades of greys and petal pink, printed on the super soft, extra wide, rayon jersey knit. The difference between them is the orientation and density of their designs. We paired the prints up with Lore Prima and Lore Seconda, two 100% cotton rib knits from the same American mill that brought us the Hatha rib knits in last year’s Early Spring catalog.

Lore Prima is a micro-rib knit with a hand that is so soft, it feels like rayon. Lore Seconda is a 2x1 rib knit that can be used as your neckband and cuffs, but it will also be lovely as a focus fabric. All four of these fabrics can be pieced together into a single garment, or worn in any combination.

Lore Collection The earliest written records of diamonds dates back hundreds of years before the common era, in the 4th century BCE, in India’s Arthashastra. Uncut, unpolished loose stones were traded and used for currency, but revered as magical with protective powers. Ancient Hindus believed diamonds were formed by lightning and were imbued with magic powers that protected bearers from evil and healed the sick. The Sanskrit word for diamond is vajra, which is the basis for Vajrayudham, the name of the thunderbolt used by Indra, the ruler of heaven and god of storms (like Zeus or Thor). Statues of gods were given eyes of diamonds, the “jewel above all other.” Hindu scriptures recognized the different colors of diamonds early on, and each was assigned mystical properties. The ancient Greeks and Romans were familiar with diamonds as well. According to the Cape Town Diamond Museum, ancient Romans believed “diamonds were the tears of the gods or splinters that had broken off of falling stars.”

An ancient Roman text dating back to the first century refers to Cupid’s arrows being tipped with diamonds. Ancient Greeks believed diamonds held supernatural powers. Plato described diamonds as living beings, and wrote about how they embodied celestial spirits, an idea which emerged from the ancient belief that diamonds were tears of the gods. Greek kings were said to have studded their leather breastplates with diamonds before heading into battle as a sign of strength and indestructibility.

Moving on to a deeper pink, we present Lore Meadow. This printed knit on a washable polyester base features small, dark rose-colored flowers and tiny buttercream flowers, with seaglass leaves on a grey background. This fabric is light enough to ruche, and substantial enough to wear as a wrap dress.

We found a stretch bubble crepe georgette in a larger floral print with the same hue of dark pink as the previous ditzy floral. Lore Blossoms is lightweight, and has some surprising stretch for built-in ease. Sew this like you would any lightweight woven with drape for a blouse, lined skirt, or lined dress.

Mystère Collection Pliny the Elder wrote in his Natural History that the diamond “prevails over all poisons and renders them powerless, dispels attacks of wild distraction and drives groundless fears from the mind.” Oh, if only the Renaissance physicians had subscribed to this belief. Grinding diamonds into powder to be mixed with liquid as a curative drink for intestinal distress was common practice for the rich for centuries leading up to the Renaissance. The doctors treating Pope Clement VII in 1534 for his failing health ground up 40,000 ducats worth of diamonds into fourteen spoonfuls of a powder for the pontiff to drink. More than likely this aided in his demise, as historian Maxwell Hutchkinson surmises that drinking tiny shards of the world’s hardest natural substance “would probably feel similar to having a Portuguese Man-O-War living inside of you.”

Revered inventor and physicist Nikola Tesla worked on the theory and practical applications of “radiant energy” which essentially proposes that everything in the universe is a form of energy with its own frequency and vibration.

Don’t go crazy and buy up a bunch of crystals for self-healing. We are talking much more high tech. Researchers at the University of Bristol have created a way to convert nuclear waste, specifically Carbon-14, into diamonds that could act as long-life batteries. In an article by David Szondy for New Atlas, he writes “Once formed, the beta particles emitted by the c-14 interact with the diamond’s crystal lattice, throwing off electrons and generating electricity. The diamonds themselves are radioactive, so they are given a second nonradioactive diamond coating to act as a radiation shield. This means a person sitting next to a diamond battery would receive about as much radiation as they would sitting next to a banana.” He continues to say that the super long half-life would render the diamond battery active for thousands of years. This has immediate practical applications for small items like pace makers and cell phones, but researchers are looking into bigger possibilities for space exploration and replacing fossil fuel and electricity in cars, planes, trains. Yeah, we are pretty sure Tesla Motors is already looking into this.

Up next we feature another bubble crepe georgette called Mystère Vines. We love the subtle playfulness of the vivid and very pale shades of brick, combined with the indigo on a pale cream background. A simple top sewn from this beauty can be enjoyed all year long.

As a solid coordinate, we chose Mystère Indigo, the denim hue of our popular Liverpool Crepe Knit collection. We thought the color and crepe texture were perfect companions for the preceding print.

Incorporating bits of the indigo, Mystère Vintage is alive with cabbage roses in brick, accented by seaglass, light mauve, and camel colors. This pima cotton print can be worn in the winter as a decorative neck scarf, dupatta,

or a tunic atop a turtle neck. In the summer, wear it as a breathable top on hot evenings.

The next two rayon fabrics look like they were milled together, but it is just a happy coincidence. Mystère Clay is a lightweight sandwashed rayon poplin that drapes well and is tightly woven to be worn as slacks, a skirt, a loose jacket, or a button-down top.

You might also like to sew a long vest from it to wear over a tunic sewn from Mystère Paisley. This rayon challis is soft to the touch, light in weight, and drapes well.

The clay color is muted, and accented by an orange-red, gold, white and black. Enjoy wearing this as a top or a scarf any time of the year.

Begin with Royale Milano, an exquisite worsted tropical wool that is light enough to be a shirting, but made to be tailored into suiting separates.

Feel the hand. So soft! Look closely and you will see it is woven from muted plum and indigo threads in an easyto-match plaid. Make a fashion statement and tailor a coordinating jacket from Royale Luxe wool bouclé.

Our next fabric is the second sandwashed cotton twill in this catalog. Royale Mulberry is an ideal choice for sewing slacks, a straight skirt, a jacket, a vest, a matching tote. We love the softness on the face of the fabric, which you absolutely can wear against your body if you wish to.

Royale Collection Early on, it was apparent that this magical crystal was rare and powerful. Diamonds were used for currency, religious ceremony, and ritual healing for the rich, the noble, and the royal. It wasn’t used as a decorative jewel until the Queen of Hungary wore a diamond in a crown in 1074. This wasn’t a fine cut stone at all, just a well formed crystal. Diamond cutting wasn’t started for another three hundred years. Keep in mind that all diamonds to this point were coming from India exclusively, so they were very rare indeed. In one extreme, France’s King Louis IX (12141270) created a sumptuary law reserving diamonds for the king.

Some say the Venetians were the first to cut the stones around 1330. According to Glenn Klein in Faceting History: Cutting Diamonds and Colored Stones, “Whether in India or in Europe, it was in the middle of the fourteenth century that the art of grinding one diamond into shape by use of another and polish-

ing it on a wheel coated with diamond dust was developed.”

Faceting improved, and diamonds were given by nobility to royalty as a sign of fealty. In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria started a trend that continues to this day - he gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond engagement ring. The Eureka Diamond was discovered in South Africa by fifteen year old Erasmus Stephanus in 1867 while he was walking by the Orange River in South Africa, the first diamond discovered outside of India. It weighed over 21 carats in its rough form, and is now just over 10 carats as an incredible cut specimen. British mining magnate Cecil Rhodes began mining like crazy in the British provinces of South Africa.

He founded De Beers....you know.... “A diamond is forever.”

The floodgates opened and diamonds became more accessible to a greater number of people.

Dana Marie #1062 “Seams Easy to Me”

Mystique Collection Throughout history, there have been some diamonds with such notoriety, we know them by name. Marie Antoinette had an incredible blue specimen called The French Blue that was said to carry a curse. It disappeared during the upheaval of the French Revolution, never to be seen again. That is to say, not in that same form. Just two days after the statute of limitations ran out for the crimes committed during the revolution, a smaller but just as strikingly blue diamond came on the market, making its way to Henry Phillip Hope. Murder, bankrupty, fatal illness and suicide all surrounded the Hope Diamond, from the men who cut it to those who possessed it. The madness stopped after famous jeweler Harry Winston bought the stone for $180,000. After owning it for nine years, he donated it to the Smithsonian, where it draws millions of people a year for viewing. The Hope Diamond might be one of the most famous stones, but the Koh-i-Noor Diamond is one of the most infamous. Some believe the massive 186 carat stone to be the Syamantaka Diamond mentioned 5000 years ago in Sanskrit scriptures. But the first recorded owner of the Kohi-Noor was a famous 13th century Sultan who captured it along with other loot and kingdoms during a military campaign in southern India. A curse was put on the stone: “He who owns this diamond will own the world, but will also know all its misfortunes. Only God, or a woman, can wear it with impunity.”

For centuries, it was passed from ruler to ruler through conquests in India, Persia, Iran. It was part of the Peacock Throne in the Taj Mahal. But the men who possessed the stone did find great misfortune. Finally, in 1849, the East India Company annexed the kingdom of Punjab and took possession of the Koh-i-Noor to give to Queen Victoria as part of the treaty. She had the stone recut down to 105.6 carats and put onto a brooch which she wore for special occasions, but she never felt good about wearing it because she regretted taking control of India. She willed the diamond to the Crown Jewels with the stipulation that it should be worn only by women thereafter (an indirect nod to the curse, perhaps?). It was set into the crown worn by Queen Alexandra for her coronation in 1902, and worn by the Queens since then. The crown with Koh-i-Noor is on display in the Tower of London.

For all of you who simply devour the olive drab fabrics we showcase, don’t hesitate to snap up Mystique Duffle polyester-wool blend twill. It is priced well for a wool blend, and the color is a strong neutral choice for sewing slacks, jackets, skirts and sheath dresses. It will look well with a blouse or tunic constructed from Mystique Fiori. This rayon challis print has a little more body than the lighter challis we normally feature, so you can wear this as an unlined skirt or dress as well. Lucy Collection Natural diamonds, those created deep underground, are rare and finite on earth. But carbon is the most common element, as far as we know, in the universe, and scientists have observed diamonds in space. In 2013, the BBC reported on findings presented at the 45th Annual Meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s Division for Planetary Sciences, during which scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory described diamond “hail stones” on Saturn and Jupiter “big enough to put on a ring....” The BBC report states “Lightning storms turn methane into soot (carbon) which as it falls hardens into chunks of graphite and then diamond.” You’re going to need a better umbrella for that storm! In 1981, scientist Marvin Ross of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory wrote an article titled “The Ice Layer of Uranus and Neptune - Diamonds in the Sky?” He proposed that hydrocarbons would separate at high pressure below the planet surface where there is high pressure and heat, separating the hydrogen out and leaving the crystal carbon diamonds. That hasn’t been proven outside of a lab yet, since we don’t have the means to explore the depths of those planets. Our favorite space bling is dangling above the Southern Hemisphere in the Constellation of Centaurus, 50,000 light years from earth. A white dwarf - a sun that has exhausted all it’s hydrogen - is said to be 90% crystallized carbon. Yep, a diamond star. At 10 billion trillion trillion (that a 10 with 33 zeros after it!) it’s the largest diamond discovered to date. What do scientists call this mother of all jewels? Lucy. Yep, as in Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. That’s way better than the scientific names of V886 Centauri and BPM 37093.

Our final collection begins with two outstanding fashion fabrics that will surely excite those of you who love unique fabrics. Lucy Silver and Lucy Gold are crackled foil knits with a light drape, great recovery, and solid back reverse. Choose a pattern where the reverse will show, or use the reverse as a contrast. If you choose to wear them as tops or lightweight knit jackets, pick up Lucy Notte as a rich black ponte knit option for slacks or a skirt. This firm double knit is also ideal for structured garments, like princess seamed sheath dresses, and knit jackets.

Lucy Stripe is a cool chalk stripe, firm ponte di Roma knit. The stripes run horizontally across the fabric, but there is enough lengthwise stretch that you can cut your pattern out crossgrain to reorient the stripes vertically.

Next up, we present Lucy Jardín, a medium weight cotton jersey knit with great body and little drape. This is the type of knit people like to wear as fitted tops or yoga pants.

Our last two fabrics in this catalog look spectacular together. Lucy Charcoal is a firm ponte di Roma double knit made from rayon, poly, and spandex. Lucy Ash is a black and white heathered and ribbed sweater knit. Technically, the crisper looking side is the right side, but we all voted to show the reverse because we prefer the muted, feathery tones better. Bottom line, choose the side that works for you, or use both as a self contrasting fabric for fun.
