On the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, not far from the River Sarno, an urban center thrived over two thousand years ago. Within the course of a single day, it was gone. Buried beneath millions of tons of volcanic ash, pumice, and stone. Forgotten for a millennia and a half, it was uncovered by accident in 1599, but excavations didn’t begin in earnest until 1748. This is the story of Pompeii. Spanning over 150 acres, only 65% of this immaculately preserved Italian city has been uncovered. We have incredible insight into the daily lives of the people, their dwellings, businesses, activities, and health of the 15000 people who lived there. Leading off our Fall 2021 Collection, is Pompeii Intrigue, an incredible yarn-woven jacket fabric in traditional autumnal colors. Pompeii Intrigue weaves polyester and rayon in hues of dark pumpkin, rust, and old gold on a dark moss base. This fabric is ideal for a lined sheath dress, boxy French jacket, and a fringed skirt (our cover image is Angela Wolf ’s “The Fringe Skirt”). Ooh la la! The colors blend well as a companion piece to Pompeii Crinkle. This distressed twill is light enough to be a wintery, button-down shirt worn over our plaid shirting or rayon jersey (VF215-04 and VF215-05), and substantial enough to be worn as pull-on slacks or a fabulous Fall dress worn with knee-high boots. Nothing rings in the autumn quite like our rich, velvety moss stretch corduroy called Pompeii Plush. Choose this comfortable classic for your slacks, a pencil skirt, jacket or vest. When we saw the colors in Pompeii Plaid, we knew we had to have it for this collection. It has the same colors as the yarn-woven Pompeii Intrigue. SPA Collection The Latin phrase salus per aquam means “health through water” and abbreviates to spell the word we use today: SPA. Pompeii had developed into a hot vacation spot for the posh people of the day. There were over 15,000 people living and working in this fertile and sunny land. The very wealthy had water piped directly into their homes for cooking, drinking, and bathing, while enormous public thermal baths served as community centers for socializing, business meetings, and relaxing. Five thermal baths dotted the land in Pompeii, each welcoming up to 1000 people at a time. Roman piping systems circulated heated air and water throughout the buildings, and rooms were set up for hot, tepid, and cold bathing. Men and women were separated by different entrances, changing areas, and baths, with the men’s side being larger and much nicer. Thermal baths are generally high in mineral content and heated naturally through sources in the ground, although the Romans created incredible pipe systems that were heated by furnaces to provide three temperatures of bathwater. On the outside of one public bath in Pompeii reads an announcement for the opening: There will be a dedication of the baths and the public is promised a slaughter of wild beasts, athletics, awnings to shade the sun, and perfumed sprinklings. Let’s play the part of tourist, and fascinate in the delights of the tales spun by our guide in Pompeii. As we wind through the streets, aspects of common life are pointed out. One of the newest tour stops is a storefront which reveals an entire thermopolium - the ancient Roman equivalent of a fast food joint. Hot food in pots were lowered into holes in the counter. Frescoes on the walls showed animals and grains, possibly a menu for the illiterate, or possibly a way to decorate thematically. Archaeologists have found traces of chicken, duck, pork, beef, fish and snails in various containers there. Moving to another part of the city, a water pipe is exposed. We are told by the guide that the pipe is made from lead. The crowd gasps - lead poisoning! The guide explains that an algae formed inside the pipe, preventing water from touching the lead itself. The crowd oohs and aahs. Up ahead another group bursts out in laughter. Our guide smiles and beckons us to an empty spot on the street. He sprays some of his bottled water on the hot stones which reveals a carved phallus. We giggle. He says the shape is deliberate, and many are located around the city, “pointing” people towards something. We follow its direction. As we turn left into an excavated building, we too burst into laughter. Several small rooms with stone beds are embraced by frescoes of sexual positions. It’s a menu, or inspiration, for the brothel we have just entered.

Quake Collection In the year 822 Ab urbe condita (CE 62 by today’s standards), a mighty earthquake shook the land. In Pompeii alone there was mass destruction of buildings and over 2,000 recorded dead. The quake is approximated to have been 7.5 in magnitude, and caused a tidal wave that hit the port of Ostia in Rome, sinking ships carrying a year’s worth of grain from Egypt. The people of Pompeii and nearby Herculaneum were unaware that this was just the beginning of their end. Oblivious to their impending
doom, they began cleaning up and rebuilding, with aftershocks rocking them at irregular intervals. These tremors fortold of the mass destruction in their future, signalling the activity below ground as things shifted and came to a proverbial boil. They had no idea that the picturesque mountain in the distance was a beast awakening from an 1800 year slumber, and the shaking of the earth was just the batting of its eyelids before the fire in its belly would build to explosion.

She primarily uses these for camp shirts, but we think they could look very cool together in a pieced garment, like Sewing Workshop’s Hibiscus Shirt. From the same mill as the navy and offwhite Tour Subdued comes our vibrant Quake Garden. Flowers and accents of purple, burgundy, seafoam, salmon, grey and white are tossed on black rayon jersey knit. At 68” wide, many of you will be able to cut your front and back out side-by-side. Measure the widest width of each pattern piece, and if it totals 68” or less, you only need to order one length plus a length for sleeves. When searching for the perfect companion to the print, we knew we wanted something just as soft to the touch, but with a little more body and weight to be sewn as a cardigan or pull-on pants. Quake Regal, the purple option from our Sofie Knit Collection, checked all the boxes.

Pliny Collection Fifteen years after the devastating earthquake, the ground again heaved mightily. A giant cloud burst forth from the mountain. According to an eyewitness account from seventeen year old Pliny the Younger (recorded in a letter twenty years later to his uncle in Rome), the cloud was like an umbrella pine, with a thick trunk rising and splitting into branches. Some parts looked white, “elsewhere blotchy and dirty.” He described hot ashes falling thickly on the ships docking in the port to rescue people from the explosion. Regarding the shaking earth, Pliny described the terrible choice people had to make - stay inside and be crushed by falling walls and ceilings, or run outside
and be hit by falling pumice stones. This lasted a full day. On the second day, Pliny and his mother tried to put distance between themselves and the eruption. “A dense black cloud was coming up behind us, spreading over the earth like a flood.... We had scarcely sat down to rest when darkness fell, not the dark of a moonless or cloudy night, but as if the lamp had been put out in a closed room.” People called out to one another, trying to reconnect through their voices in the darkness. Closer to the shore he saw “the sea sucked away and apparently forced back by the earthquake: at any rate it receded from the shore so that the quantities of sea creatures were left stranded on dry sand,” describing a tidal wave from the earthly heaving.

If you live in warmer climates, whip up a cap sleeve top and slacks of the Milano to wear with a long Kimono inspired robe stitched from a combination of Pliny Blossoms and Pliny Silky. The floral print is a fluid, bubble crepe georgette, which will be the focus fabric of your robe, and the silky salmon is a dull hammered satin that will look lovely as the collar, cuffs, and hem border.

Vulcan Collection The mountain exploded, the umbrella pine of doom rose to the heavens, and then the debris plummeted back to earth. The winds that normally blew away from the sea changed course and brought destruction down on Herculaneum, Stabiae, Torre Annunziata, and Pompeii. A cloud low to the ground barreled down the mountain in a surge over 100 mph, filled with superheated toxic gas, ash and rock. This pyroclastic surge devoured everything in its path. It burned and choked the people in its path, then buried them, frozen in time, under ash. That was day one. By the end of the second day, 15,000 people from these tragic cities and surrounding villas were dead, buried under piles of hot ash and stone. Fine ash fell for days. Lightweight blocks of pumice and rocks spat to the earth like stone hail. For those who survived, they never returned to their homes, but relocated to nearby cities and started life over. There was no word for what happened. They were unfamiliar with this idea of an exploding mountain - Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the mainland European continent. In honor of Vulcan, the God of Flame and the Forge, the term volcano erupted.

All of our Italian fabrics in this catalog are designer deadstock, and the designer paid much more for these fabrics to be milled. Pinstripes are always classy, and Vulcan Stripe has some added value. The single stripe is bone, while the double stripes match the color of the following sweater knit. Discovery Collection
For over 1500 years, Pompeii remained buried. A city forgotten. Renaissance Architect Domenico Fontana and his crew were digging underground water channels in 1599 near the Sarno river and uncovered bits of Pompeii. Having worked for years as the architect to the Pope, he was horrified to see the immorality of some of the frescos and left the rubble in place. Nearly 150 years would pass before the lost cities of Herculaneum, Staviae, and Pompeii, were rediscovered. There seemed to be odd gaps in the uneven rubble. In 1863, architect Giuseppe Fiorelli devised a plan to inject plaster into the gaps before removing the outer debris. The plaster hardened and revealed the shapes of people, animals, food. These voids in the debris were all that was left of bodies buried in the ash. They were killed by the toxic blast, buried under ash that hardened over time, and the rubble around them preserved
the shape of their body, clothes, expressions. Although Pliny the Younger wrote that the explosion occured on August 24, his account was recorded 20 years after the fact, and there is some debate about his date based on the clothing being worn on the newly discovered bodies, the seasonal fruits that were likewise preserved, and the change of calendar from Julian to Gregorian which switched some timing around. Plus, it would have been all too neat for the volcano to erupt the day after the feast of Vulcan. But don’t tell that to the Italians - every tourist website loves to tie in Vulcanalia as the last festival celebrated in Pompeii. In 1979, this historic and well preserved 150 acre site was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We Hope you have enjoyed this trip through time, and flipping through our Fall 2021 Catalog.
