Tea. Pour yourself a “cuppa” and learn fascinating tidbits about the history of tea while you flip through our Summer Catalog filled with breezy fashion fabrics for the hot months ahead.

Summer is upon us, and it’s time to create some cool, comfortable clothes to wear on those hot and sticky days. Our Camellia Collection is a cluster of breezy blue, mostly natural fibers, for the optimum breathability.

Begin with Camellia Boho, a durable cotton, cross-woven in an indigo and white railroad stripe, and slubbed for wonderful surface texture. Make designer-style overalls using Folkwear’s Rosie the Riveter pattern - or hem them high for shorts. This bottomweight fabric is also ideal for Capris, walking shorts, elastic waist pants, and a summer jacket.

Next up is Camellia Navy, a rich ponte di Roma that is firm but light weight. Choose this when you want to sew a straight knit dress, a princess seamed knit top, or knit slacks with a matching cardigan. We think the navy slacks will be a perfect bottom to a tunic or light linen jacket sewn from Camellia Trellis. The navy Celtic knot design printed on the soft white linen begs to be showcased in a simple construction with little piecing.

Camellia Mist was chosen as an accent piece, as well as a fantastic fashion option for those of you in the hottest climates. Crosswoven of indigo and white fine cotton threads, the light weight and soft hand will be cooling to wear this summer. Whether you create a shell or summer top, or you use this as a binding or accent on one of our other Camellia Collection fabrics, you will be happy to have this on hand.

Camellia Collection According to legend, almost 5000 years ago a servant of the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung was boiling some drinking water. A strong gust of wind blew leaves from a nearby tree into the water while he wasn’t looking. When he returned to the pot, he saw the water had become colored and fragrant. The inquisitive Emperor took a sip, and to his delight he found the drink restorative and healing. The tree was the camellia sinensis, the evergreen now used for authentic tea. Not all teas are created equal. For example, herbal drinks, like chamomile or mint “teas,” are actually tisanes because they lack the camellia sinensis. The leaves of this unassuming plant contain antioxidants, alkylamine antigens, caffeine, polyphenols, catechin compounds, some amino acids, and is rich in vitamins B2, E and C, plus minerals such as magnesium, potassium and zinc. In terms of purported health benefits, traditional black and green teas could help lower cholesterol, improve gut health, even out insulin levels, reduce the risk of cancer and stroke, reduce stress levels, aid digestion, enhance focus, strengthen the immune system, improve hair and skin health, aid weight loss, and reduce tissue inflammation. Pretty impressive for a plant, and not a bad accidental discovery. Worldwide, tea consumption is second to water, with 6.3 billion kilograms consumed last year that’s 13.8 trillion pounds! Mind you, that’s just for “real” tea, not for tisanes. Sit down with a soothing cup of tea, and steep yourself in our beautifully coordinated summer fabrics.

Bubble Crepe Georgette has been a very popular weave for our summer collections. We begin with Sinensis Alpha, sporting a pale indigo and white vertical stripe background with exotic birds and flowers tossed about. The crepe texture gives this piece some character with unobtrusive surface texture, while the Asian inspired floral and aviary design sweeps across the semi-sheer cloth.

We envision this for kimono style summer jackets, flowing lined skirts, and billowing blouses.

By now we all know the reflective qualities of white in the summer heat. How about staying cool with this optic white stretch cotton twill when worn as slacks, shorts, golf skirt, or a summer jacket? Consider Sinensis Twill a blank canvas for embroidery, stenciling, and applying appliqués and trims.

Sinensis Collection There is an art to making a great cup of tea. Use hot - but not boiling - water. Let the tea steep for a few minutes before drinking. Don’t let it sit too long, or the drink might become bitter. You should sip tea over an extended period of time, not chug it, allowing yourself to feel its warmth while relaxing and de-stressing. Avoid drinking right after a meal. Instead, give your body a chance to let the food settle and the gut enzymes go to work breaking down the food, before enjoying your refreshing tea. Since all true tea comes from one type of plant, it’s the manipulation and processing of the leaves and stems after harvesting that determine if the tea is black, green, white, yellow, or oolong. Each type of tea will produce a different color, smell and taste when steeped, yet they all stem from the camellia sinesis. For two thousand years, tea was used medicinally and for spiritual comfort in China. It wasn’t until the 4th century that consumption of tea for pleasure began. As tea plantations developed throughout China, the tea merchants became rich, as well as the producers of the tea pots, cups and saucers being manufactured as a status of wealth. As the dried leaves slowly started to find their way to other countries, tea traditions developed in Japan, Russia, Britain, and down to South America.

We purchased Chá Baroque from a New York supplier that specializes in reselling designer deadstock. If you love it, order early because we can not get more of it.

This lightweight cotton lawn features a print of champagne colored baroque style leaves offset by navy. The fabric is semi-sheer with a crisp hand. You may find it softens when washed, so pre-shrinking is highly recommended (as it is with most cottons). We follow it with two of our basic stock crinkled cotton gauze fabrics that can be worn as shells underneath a loose baroque top.

Chá Champagne and Chá Navy are 100% cotton, soft to the touch, lightweight, with a slight built-in stretch when the crinkle flattens out. Oh, and check out the price - at $3.99 per yard it’s no surprise we sell thousands of yards of cotton gauze per year!

Chá Collection It is said that Emperor Shen Nung described the experience of drinking his new brew “as if the liquid was investigating every part of his body.” He called it chá, with the written Chinese character rooted in the word investigate. During the Han Dynasty, over 2000 years after Shen Nung’s discovery, a special character was developed for referring to chá, illustratively featuring a man standing between grass and wooden branches, symbolizing the balance between people and nature. Fresh leaves are not shelf-stable, that’s why drying the leaves is important for commercial sales. Different methods of drying produce the variations in drink color for green, black, white, and yellow teas. It is said that a pound of fresh leaves will dry down to just a handful. In ancient China,

leaves would sit in the sun for a couple hours before being stir fried, rolled on a table to press out additional moisture, stir fried again, then spread out to dry, finally being sorted from highest quality leaves to lowest quality dust. According to historian Sarah Rose, black tea was cured for much longer at the beginning than green tea. First the leaves would sit in the hot sun for twelve hours so they oxidized and wilted, then the “stewed” leaves were stirred in their “liquor” and left to sun-bake another twelve hours, developing the black tannins, before being dried out and sorted. Oolong tea incorporates leaves, stems and twigs, producing an earthy smell and flavor. Matcha is dried green tea in powdered form, historically used in Japanese tea ceremonies.

Chá Stripe was manufactured in Itlay by the Albini Group, a company known for their exquisite fabrics.

This handsome stripe is all cotton, semi-sheer, and incredibly soft to the touch. The stripes run horizontal, but you can cut your pattern the European way across the grain to orient the stripes as vertical. Unusually wide for a cross-woven cotton, at 60” you won’t need to order as much as you would with most of our other woven cottons.

FitNice Systems “Master Pants” - as shorts

Now for something unusual. Behold Chá Branches, featuring stems and leaves splayed across an white linen base cloth. Alternating stipes of looser and tighter weaving provide a textural flair. We chose this as a companion to the following beige linen blend. Imagine wearing a long, loosely constructed jacket from the branch print over a lined summer sheath tailored from Chá Wisp. As the name implies, this cloth has a more open weave, adding to your comfort when a breeze hits you on a hot day. The rayon content provides the softness, and also tamps down on the wrinkles so they won’t be as pronounced as with a pure linen.

Another handsome shirting option is Chá Grid. Undulating printed lines of beige and brown criss-cross in a relaxed check pattern.

Ocha Collection In the 8th century, Chinese writer Lu Yu composed Chá Ching, a treatise on tea in 7000 characters. It is credited as being the first known writing on tea, and is believed to be the basis of the Japanese tea ceremony. His writings about this restorative elixir were historical, spiritual, and instructional for all aspects from production to consumption. Within a century of Lu Yu’s Chá Ching, a Japanese Buddhist monk brought seeds back from China and began to plant tea trees in Japan. Inspired by Lu Yu’s work, the monk cultivated the spiritual nature of tea drinking into daily monastic life. Six hundred years later, the Japanese tea ceremony, Chanoyu, would bring that spiritual quality to the masses, with a ritual that placed an emphasis on the act of making and drinking tea. Ceremonial tea houses were constructed, creating a peaceful atmosphere both outside and inside the tea room. The outer garden is very mellow, without bright colors or strong fragrances. The low doorway to the Tatami room causes the guest to bow upon entering - an act of humility. If you visit a tea room, it is respectful to leave the gaudy garments and jewels at home, as well as strong fragrances, so you don’t distract from the delicate matcha tea. Matcha is used because of its more earthy grass smell and taste, bringing nature to the forefront. It is produced from the leaves of trees that are shaded in the final three weeks of growth. Limiting the light produces an increase in caffeine and theanine, an amino acid credited with reducing stress. All the stems and veins are removed and the leaves are stone-ground to produce a fine powder. Matcha was first developed by the founder of Zen Buddhism, a Japanese monk, in the 12th century, which he used in religious ceremonies.

Chay Collection How long does it take a camel to travel 11,000 miles? A year and a half. Why do we know that? Glad you asked! In 1618, a gift of tea was presented to Tsar Alexis of Russia by the Chinese. He and his court enjoyed it so much, they had to have more, and so did many wealthy Russians. A tea-trade route emerged, involving nearly 6000 camels traversing the land from China to Russia, bringing 600 pounds of tea per camel per year. Within twenty years, Russians were drinking tea with cookies and sandwiches for a mid-afternoon snack, or enjoying a strong brew after dinner.

Keep in mind, Russians have a wonderful flair for entertaining.

They used a samovar for brewing the tea. Water and tea leaves were added to the outer chamber of this highly decorative urn, while burning charcoal was added to the inner metal tube to heat the beverage and keep it warm for extended periods. Once deeply steeped, tea was dispensed through a valve near the base into a tempered drinking glass held in a metal holder (podstakannik), and each person could dilute the concoction with hot water or liquor, like cognac or rum, if desired. Tea was served after dinner with sweets, but not during a meal or feast. Hundreds of specialty manufacturers developed tea drinking necessities, such as the samovars, cups, saucers, snack plates and platters, with traditional Russian designs. Unlike the Japanese tea ceremony which puts the emphasis on the tea itself, the Russian tea ceremony is really a joyful reason to showcase beautiful dishes, eat yummy treats, and enjoy the company of family and friends. Because of the lengthy journey the camels and their handlers embarked on each year, tea was expensive and therefore enjoyed primarily in wealthier homes. Once the trans-Siberian highway was constructed, the trade-route was improved so tea could be transferred in just over a week, making it more accessible and bringing down the price so more people could enjoy it.

Bedford Collection One woman can change the world. In this case, it’s Anna Maria, 7th Duchess of Bedford, Lady in Waiting to Queen Victoria. For many years, British nobles ate a late breakfast and an evening dinner. In the 19th century, dinners started later and later, until they began after 8:00, so a light luncheon was added mid-day. Legend has it that Lady Anna was visiting friends at their castle in 1840 when she experienced a “sinking feeling” in her gut mid-afternoon. She ordered up a pot of tea and something to nibble on.

She enjoyed it so much, she made this part of her regular schedule and invited friends over to share in her darjeeling, cookies and tiny sandwiches. Her friends loved it, and made the tradition part of their routine. Before long, the entire country was partaking in afternoon teatime. The year 1840 was also noteworthy for another momentous tea occasion. For two hundred years, tea was mostly enjoyed by nobles and the upper class in England because of the expense of importing it from China. But in 1840, Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist, travelled to China and visited a tea plantation.

He was amazed by the entire tea production and equipment. He also asked about the additives being put into the teas for export to Britain. To his amazement, he discovered the plantation was mixing in Gypsum and Prussian Blue to make a more consistent green color, which they said the British liked. Gypsum is a mineral (often used in plaster), and Prussian Blue is a synthetic pigment created by oxidation of ferrous ferrocyanide salts - yes, cyanide (cyan = blue). In her book “All the Tea in China,” Sarah Rose describes how Fortune displayed his findings at London’s Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace in 1851, telling the Brits they were being slowly poisoned by these additives, and making a case for tea to be produced within the British Empire. Plantations went up around India to produce tea for the British, ending the Chinese monopoly.

Indian platations used Fortunes notes from his 1840 trip to China to produce top quality teas.

The first print features small black and grey flowers tossed on a soft-white ground, while the second showcases larger white and grey flowers on black. They can be stitched together in one garment, like a contrasting neckline and hem on a loose tunic. We couldn’t resist working in Liesl & Co.’s “Afternoon Tea Blouse” into this catalog. Bedford Ash is a Tencel®, cotton and linen blend. This was deadstock we picked up from a broker in New York and he no longer had the specific percentages for each fiber. We absolutely loved it as an all purpose woven fabric that is light enough for wearing as a shirt, and full bodied enough to enjoy as drawcord beach pants.

It’s a perfect color match for Bedford Striation, another of our deliciously soft rayon jersey knit prints. The stripes can be fun in a top that features a twisting of the left and right front panels. Play around with it.

Liberty Collection In the Georgian Era (1714-1830), the East India Company held a monopoly on importing tea from China to Britain, and influenced the politics and subsequent taxes for tea imports. Britain was in deep debt, and began taxing colonial Americans beginning in 1765 on stamps, paper, glass, ink, paint, and tea. The British government felt justified since the bulk of their debt was incurred fighting wars for the colonists, but the colonists resented the fact that the taxes were imposed while they had no representation in Parliament. John Hancock and Sam Adams, among others, began smuggling in Dutch tea to circumvent the East India Company’s stronghold. Even when the taxes were lowered, and the price of the Dutch tea rose higher than the British tea, Hancock and Adams protected their smuggling interests by declaring that taxation without representation was at the core of their actions. On December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty, a revolutionary group lead by Adams, stormed three import ships moored at Boston Harbor, flung the chests of tea overboard into the water, and swept the decks before they left. This peaceful protest became known as the Boston Tea Party.

It prompted King George III to close Boston Harbor and send British troops en masse to the colonies. These three events are seen as the start of the American Revolution. In additional protest, people switched to drinking coffee, boycotting all tea in an act of patriotism. Over a hundred years later, at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904, a group of tea merchants were having a rough time trying to sell their hot beverages in the summer heat of middle America. Trying to salvage their stalled business, they filled glasses with ice, poured in the tea, and sold it as a cool refreshment. Iced tea was a hit and now accounts for more than 80% of tea consumed in the United States.
