Yoga Collection For thousands of years, people the world over have sought the healing and strengthening powers of yoga. The very word conjures images of thin men twisting their bodies like pretzels, or super fit women in packed classes moving from pose to pose. Anything that thrives for thousands of years must have some real merit, right? So what’s the deal with yoga? You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga - you will gain flexibility through the repetition of the stretching movements. You don’t need to have good balance to start yoga - you will improve your balance through the core strengthening of yoga. There are several different branches of yoga. Most types involve a series of stretching and balancing movements in combination with deep breathing. The earliest mention of yoga in texts dates back about 5000 years, but it may be thousands of years older than that and was passed down through oral traditions. Originally, yoga was performed by upper-caste Hindi men who believed they would achieve greater levels of consciousness, balance, and focus through deep meditative states and physical challenge. Today, yoga is one of the world’s most practiced forms of exercise and each practitioner sets a personal goal, like becoming more flexible, strengthening one’s core for better balance, improving sleep, to name just a few. In our limited space here, we will focus on some popular types of modern Western yoga.

We were thrilled when the fabric on page 3 became available from Sevenberry in Japan.

Yoga Stripe is a classic menswear cotton shirting of high quality. Play with it a bit.

Cut a front shirt panel on the bias, or construct a cool handkerchief skirt. The dark background is midnight, so it is a little bluer than black and more black than navy.

Many of you in northern regions are not done with winter for several more months, so we have incorporated Yoga Floral into the collection for you.

On page 5 we feature a fun, novelty piece for a cool spring jacket. Yoga Plush is a loosely constructed, yarn-woven cloth that is easy to fringe for extra flair. Line it for extra stability, or keep it unlined and simply cover the seams with interesting bias tape.

Yoga Shibori is a printed SofTouch polyester that is light enough to wear as a tunic or blouse, and substantial enough to wear as a dress. The motifs are 11/4” - 13/4” large.

If you love making Chanel inspired ensembles, you will appreciate Yoga Plaid. This stretch-woven viscose and cotton blend has just a hint of stretch for built-in ease, making shoulders and elbows more comfortable in a fitted garment. Oh, yes, you can totally fringe this for a jacket and skirt. Or make a threequarter length jacket to wear over a dress sewn from Yoga Snow, a soft ponte di Roma double knit in classic winter white.

Our second collection is inspired by three fabrics from different suppliers that have the same color theme - cinnabar, steel blue and black. These colors are amazing together, and the fabrics in this collection are really something special.

Let’s start with Balance Spots, dotted and streaked with cinnabar, steel, black, snow, mocha and honey. Whip up a ruched T-shirt to wear with a cardigan from the preceding Yoga Snow or a knit jacket and knit slacks from the following Balance Cinnabar (page 8).

This firm ponte di Roma double knit is ideal for more constructed knit garments.

There is slightly more stretch lengthwise than crosswise, so you really can cut your pattern out either along or across the grain, whichever works best for you.

If you construct a dress from the cinnabar knit, top it with Balance Shards.

Drape a long, narrow scarf around your neck that falls to your waist for a dramatic effect. You can also stitch up a chiffon tunic to wear over a shell or camisole. The breeziness of the fabric is a great foil to the sharpedged print.

Balance Collection At its core, yoga is about balance and flexibility, both physically and spiritually. Practicioners of hatha and vinyasa yogas go through a series of purposeful stances, concentrating on making one movement while inhaling and the next while exhaling. You may have heard of these postures: downward facing dog, sun warrior, and cat-cow. There are hundreds of asanas, or bodily postures, and when the class is constructed correctly, the asanas flow from one to the next, stretching or engaging a muscle group, being very careful to work both left and right, both front and back, and to challenge, then stretch, the chosen muscles and joints. If you hold a pose that engages and strengthens your

quadriceps, you need an asana that stretches that muscle group. Breathing is also at the core of yoga, because it is tied to our prana, or life-force. Slow, deep breaths through the nose while holding each pose allows the practitioner a chance to concentrate on nothing other than the present state of being. Complete focus. Forget about the rest of the world. It is incredibly restorative to burn a little incense, dim the lights, and start deep breathing while moving through a series of asanas, totally leaving all your other life-stressers outside of yourself. Unlike reading a book or watching TV, your every yoga breath refocuses your attention on YOU.

We are happy to present this 220GSM weight jersey from a US manufacturer. Balance Marble has an incredibly soft hand and rich appearance. It is one of those amazing fabrics that looks smashing on everyone. Style a polo for him, a surplice dress for her, and a crew-neck Tee for them.

Who doesn’t need great denim in the wardrobe? Seriously, Balance Ash is a fantastic stretch denim with a streaky appearance, light weight, and soft hand. This is what we refer to as French denim. Treat yourself to a new jacket and slacks. If you own an embroidery machine, decorate your new garments for added flair.

Rounding out the collection is a handsome stretch-woven cotton shirting. Feel the softness and body of Balance Plaid. This magnificent yarn-woven tartan has a large 3” repeat. Pair it with the cinnabar knit or the ash denim.

Turning things a bit earthier now, let us jump into a collection of putty and clay. We will begin with Hatha Meadow, a subdued polyester print that we originally featured on our site with our Polyester Print collection. It sold so well, we ordered more to showcase to you. The putty color matches our trio of knits that follow, the lighter clay pairs well with the rayon jersey at the end of this collection, and the darker cinnabar can be worn with the double-knit in the Balance collection. And, as always, we kept the price low for you. Many of you can make a cap sleeve top for less than $5.

We were contacted by a mill in California that wanted to stop making knits and concentrate on just their woven fashion fabrics. We bought all of the knits they had. On page 14 is a trio in a subdued putty that you can mix and match into a single garment for textural elements. Hatha One is a very soft, micro-rib knit, Hatha Two is a 1x1 rib knit, and Hatha Three is a 2x1 rib knit. All are 100% cotton.

There is also a medium weight, full bodied cotton jersey that we did not feature in the catalog, but we will add it to the website as Hatha Four in case you just had to have it.

The most popular style of yoga in the USA is hatha, which focuses on mental, physical, and metaphysical alignment. With over 200 physical postures, and many more variations on those postures, hatha is used to stretch the muscles, limber up the joints and spine, and bring about a peaceful state of mind. It is slow, deliberate, and improves flexibility while building core strength for balance. Who can’t benefit from that right now? As practitioners move from one asana to the next, inhaling through the nose on one move and exhaling through the nose on the next, the circulation in the body improves. According to medical-dictionary. thefreedictionary.com, this all works “to make the spine supple and promote circulation in all the organs, glands, and tissues.” As we age, we lose balance and flexibility, but hatha Yoga restores those to us. You may have used yoga in physical therapy. For example, “cat-cow” helps alleviate arthritis issues in the spine through a repetition of arching and swaying the back while on hands and knees. Sun god pose - part of the sun warrior movements - helps work out the knees and IT bands of the legs which can tighten and pull the knee cap out of alignment. If you want to venture into yoga, start with hatha.

The next two SofKnit prints are both a large scale paisley that are delicious to touch (and wear!), but in two different colors. Hatha Alpha blends well with the putty knits. Hatha Beta blends well with the clay knit that follows. Fashion yourself a new top or dress, or play around and combine them into a paneled, flowing skirt.

Hatha Terracotta rayon jersey (page 16) is a very muted, pale clay color on a soft all-way stretch knit. This is one of those fabrics you can sew into several garments to have on hand, like a warm neutral to blend into ensembles. Oh, and it is 67” wide, so a little will go a long way.

Drawing on the purple tones from the flannel, we chose Vinyasa Regal (page 18) to act as a solid knit for tank tops and stylish T-shirts. It is slightly more opaque than an onion skin knit, and the slubs offer textural appeal.

Vinyasa Yoga is an off-shoot of hatha, linking movements during an inhale or exhale, in a flowing motion.

Beginners start with “gentle Vinyasa” which goes at a slower pace like hatha. But more advanced classes move from one posture to the next at a quicker speed, so at the end of one sun salutation combination the heart rate is elevated, and after a set of four salutation sequences a few beads of sweat might appear. One pose flows into the next, and a full sequence will challenge, and then stretch, specific muscles. The movements may include lunges and squats, an arabesque, and the ever popular downward facing dog which has you balance on flat hands and flat feet with your tushie way up in the air. The word Vinyasa comes from Sanskrit “to place in a special way.” Even the types of movements are connected to the type of breath, so more upward and open postures occur during inhalations, while twists and downward movements follow through an exhale. Healthline.com cites studies that show Vinyasa improves endurance and strength training, stability and balance, provides the benefits of a cardio workout, and lowers stress and anxiety.

This lovely georgette print is a subdued version of the bright red/royal/gold we offered as the last entry to our Fall 2020 catalog (VF205-47). We chose Bhakti Crepe as a smart, grey suiting, with its soft drape, to be a companion to all the fabrics in this collection.

From our Rayon Jersey Knit collection we chose the rich black to factor into this collection. The 200GSM weight of Bhakti Comfy makes this a lovely option for stylish knit tops, light sweater sets, and flowing skirts. We have many colors available of this fabric on our website.

Bhakti Collection Early yogic practitioners were Hindi, upper-caste, highly spiritual men. Our final collection incorporates the dark neutrals of black, grey and brown, in a bevvy of sophisticated options. Nidra Abstract is printed on polyester peachskin, which gives it such a nice, soft feel to wear against the skin as a blouse. Look closely, the black is off-set by a very pale peachy-cream. This same color combination is found in Nidra Bouclé, a textured, chevron, polyester suiting. For a classic ensemble, sew a dress from the print, then line a long bouclé jacket with the print. The bouclé is also a chic option for a jacket and skirt to wear with a blouse sewn from the abstract print.

What better way to end than with a refreshing nap? Yoga nidra is the yoga of sleep. It is said that a 20 minute yoga nidra is as rejuvenating as a full night of sleep. At Hip Circle Empowerment Center in Evanston, Illinois, yoga nidra was so popular as an ending to the 75 minute gentle vinyasa class, it is now being offered as its own streaming class. Participants lay down, often with a pillow under the knees and a comfy blanket on top, and listen to the meditative directions of the class leader. It is designed to give the mind and body a break as the gentle voice guides you through a series of meditative exercises.

The goal is total relaxation of the body and mind through structured, guided meditation. According to the Cleveland Clinic, yoga nidra works with the autonomic nervous system which regulates the unconscious bodily processes, like breathing, heartbeat, digestion, and blood flow. They contend that in the deeper meditative state of yoga nidra, “the pineal gland is activated and that releases the hormone melatonin.” Melatonin is not only associated with sleep, it is also a powerful, natural antioxidant and can “help manage immune function, blood pressure, cortisol levels and induce restful sleep.”

We now draw your attention to Nidra Graphite, a polyester suiting in dark grey. It’s a marvellous companion to Nidra Classic, our last cotton from Sevenberry of Japan. You certainly can sew a button-down shirt from this glen plaid, but it is substantial enough for cool slacks and a spring jacket.

This mocha rayon jersey knit has a tonal quality that really harmonizes with the preceding grey fabrics, but it also is a superb base to wear with the following chiffon. Nidra Comfy is the second of our 200GSM rayon jersey knits in this catalog, and you can feel why we adore them so much. Honestly, you will love wearing this as a wrap top or T-shirt so much, you will make pajama set to wear to bed!
