Grimm Collection Long ago, in the centuries before electricity, television, and the internet (gasp!), people passed the time reading and telling stories. Cautionary tales were told to children to prevent them from behaving badly. Across 18th century Europe there was a tale for every occasion, passed down through generations, full of magic, love, deception, and death. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, young brothers from the Hesse-Kessel region of Germany, developed a love for folk stories and what they represented from a historic cultural perspective. These brothers were educated as lawyers, like their father before them, but their passion was in linguistics. They studied medieval manuscripts and collected folk tales from Germany and surrounding countries. When Napoleon Bonapart stormed east and sought to dismantle Germanic culture, the Brothers Grimm compiled and published a collection of 200 tales in an attempt to preserve these fantastic stories. People who read their Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Housewives Tales) wrote to the brothers with the versions of the stories that had been told in their families. The brothers made adjustments in subsequent editions, altering and updating as they found one ending or another was far more common than their published version. They essentially crowdsourced their re-writes. In this pre-Halloween issue of Vogue Fabrics Catalog we will delve into their personal inspirations as well as some well known tales they told, which originally had much different endings than the modern Disney versions. In our first two collections we feature five stretch cotton prints. The first two can be used together in a garment as a focus piece, a binding or an accent, or they can each stand on their own. Grimm Hansel comes alive with crisscrossing splatters in grey, olive and cobalt on black. Grimm Gretel combines olive, moss and cobalt in an abstract, zigzag arrangement on black. Choose these for tops, skirts or light slacks wherever a woven cotton is recommended, then enjoy the stretch as a bonus comfort feature.

Lore Collection When the Brothers Grimm first published their stories in 1812, the tales were blunt, gruesome, and even anti-Semitic and racist. By their seventh and final edition in 1857 they had softened the plots, changed the evil mothers to evil stepmothers or witches, and eliminated some of the harshest tales altogether. Their last edition was widely accepted as it better reflected the Christian morals of the time. The origins of many stories dated back hundreds of years and came from a number of countries. These tales were passed down orally within families, and some had been published prior to the Grimm’s book. In 1634, a collection of folk tales by Italian courtier and poet Giambattista Basile was published posthumously by his sister. Il Pentamerone, also known as Lo cunto de li cunti (“The Tale of Tales”) included Petrosinella and Cenerentola, which we know today as Rapunzel and Cinderella. Basile’s work influenced Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barnevile, the Baroness d’Aulnoy, who published several books including Les Contes des Fées (Tales of fairies) in 1697 which coined the phrase fairy tale. Her conversational writing reflected the way stories were spun in the salons of the French nobility, and included La Belle aux cheveux d’or (Goldilocks) and Finette Cendron (Cunning Cinders - similar to Cinderella). Also in 1697, Charles Perrault, a French courtier to King Louis XIV who advocated that modern storytelling was far superior to those of the ancients like Aesop and Homer, published a book of tales. Histoires ou Contes de Temps passé, more popularly known by it’s subtitle which translates to Tales of Mother Goose, earned him the reputation of the founder of the modern folk tale genre.

Kinder Collection You may want to pronounce this collection, Kinder, like the synonym for being nicer. However, we named it for the children who listened to these folk tales - as in kindergarten. Tales were told to pass the time, but also to teach a lesson. Characters were a mix of common folk, royalty, talking animals and magical beings. Forests were often places where bad things happened, or where strange creatures lived, and were usually places one should not wander into alone (just ask Hansel and Gretel, or Little Red Riding Hood). Little people played a huge part of folk tales, as elves, dwarves and mannikins, and there is a bit of historical basis for this. Children from desolate families were sent to work in mines as cheap labor, and the lack of sun plus poor nutrition stunted their growth, so some mining

towns did see more people of shorter stature than other areas.

Witches were a staple of Germanic folktales, and with good reason. In 1485 Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches) was published by a clergyman in Speyer, Germany as a treatise declaring witchcraft illegal and endorsing the extermination of all witches, thus leading to the slaughter of tens of thousands of accused conjurors across Europe. In the early days of the printing press, this booklet remained a best seller for two centuries, being outsold only by the Bible. Scandinavian stories featured ogres and giants that lived in the mountains. French tales loved fairies and fairy godmothers. Underlying lessons from all the stories included: keep your promises; do what you are told; and people (or things) are not always what they seem.

As cold weather descends upon us, we need to think about how to stay warm and layer. Spinning Portland is an all cotton herringbone sweatshirt fleece from Telio. The face has the smooth, heathered grey herringbone, and the reverse features prominent winterwhite loops like an exaggerated French Terry knit. Use this fabric on any jacket pattern that calls for the reverse to be shown, like FitNice System’s Pretty Penny or Great Copy Patterns Cascade Mountain Pullover.

The colors of the Portland fleece pair well with the next two fabrics, which are predominantly grey with subtle undertones of pale pink. Spinning Ash is the second of the three Felix stretch gabardines in this catalog. The polyester makes it durable, the rayon provides the soft hand, and the spandex helps it keep its shape with repeated wearing.

The manufacturer recommends dry cleaning, but you are welcome to test a piece for washing if you would like to see how it holds up in your water.

Spinning Collection There are quite a few stories that feature spinning, the work of pulling and twisting natural fibers into yarn for weaving.

In early medieval Europe women would hold their wool or flax on a distaff in one hand and pull the long fibers using a spindle in the other. In some of the oldest versions of Sleeping Beauty, the outcast wise woman cursed the baby princess and said she would prick her finger on a distaff and die. When spinning wheels, which had been in use in China for centuries, finally made their way to Europe on the Spice Roads, the tale was updated for the new technology, proclaiming the child would prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel. In Rumplestiltskin, the miller’s daughter is said to spin straw into gold, so she is locked in the castle for three nights with a spinning wheel and mounds of straw to prove her worth. In the Grimm’s 1812 publication, they told the tale of Frau Holle but did not mention spinning at all. This was a horrible oversight,

as Holle (Holda or Hulde) was the legendary patron goddess of spinning and weaving in Scandinavian and Germanic countries. So the Grimms revised their tale and wrote that the beautiful daughter had spun so much her hands were bloody, providing a more plausible reason for her to be sitting at the well washing her hands when she fell in, landing in the meadow belonging to Frau Holle who saved her. But this tale fell short of the Frau Holle legend, so in 1862 August Ey retold the story of Frau Holle and the Distaff (Die Frau Holle und die Flachsdiesse) wherein two orphan sisters sat spinning everyday. The industrious one who spun till all her flax was gone was rewarded by Frau Holle who turned her spinning wheel to gold and her spun thread to a filament as fine as silk, while the lazy sister’s flax had been turned to straw. The lesson for girls was to finish all their spinning before Frau Holle came.

Snowdrop Collection One famous tale is loosely based on Margaretha von Waldeck let’s see if you can guess which. In 1533, this renowned beauty was born to a Count in Germanic lands. Her mother died when she was four, and her stepmother was very strict and domineering. At age ten, Margaretha was sent to the Brussels court of Mary of Hungary to curry favor and win a good husband. Men took notice of the child’s incredible beauty. She was courted at that young age, even pursued by Crown Prince Philip of the Holy Roman Empire, but she was Lutheran so nothing could come of that relationship. Her health deteriorated and she died at 21. Local chronicles alleged poisoning, but did not speculate by whom. Her father owned several copper mines, worked primarily by children. The dark mines and malnutrition effected their puberty, thus stunting growth and causing an early death. These miners lived together in communal housing near the mines, and they were referred to as “poor dwarfs” by villagers. Sounding familiar? If you guessed Snow White, you are correct! In fact, her home village of Bergfreiheit has since been renamed Schneewittchendorf (Snow White Village) and is part

of the German Fairy Tale Trail for tourists. In the early accounts of Snow White, she was seven years old when her step mother sent her into the woods to be killed, not 15 years old as in later tales. The name Snowdrop was sometimes used for this story, to avoid confusion with the other Grimm Fairy Tale of Snow White and Rose Red. In early versions, the evil queen tried many times to kill the child: huntsman, poisoned ribbon, poisoned comb, poisoned apple. Snow White choked on the apple and it wasn’t until the Prince’s men dropped the glass coffin that the apple dislodged and she regained consciousness, never ingesting the poison. The queen was forced to wear iron shoes that had been heated over a fire and dance until she dropped dead. In 1823 the tale of Sneewittchen was translated into English by Edgar Taylor who used the name Snowdrop and softened the story for a more genteel British readership. The seven dwarfs were given names for a Broadway production in 1912, and these names were changed by Walt Disney for his first full length animated feature film in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Bubble crepe georgettes are fairly opaque and drape like a crepe de chine. We have two such fabrics to start our next collection. Snowdrop Crepe is from our basic stock collection of Bubble Crepe Georgettes in our retail store. The rich black looks beautiful with Snowdrop Foliage, an autumnal palette on black base. Whether you use both for a pieced top, or create a blouse and lined skirt, your new outfit will look complete with a cardigan of Snowdrop Imposter, the second of our suede knits in this catalog. This Imposter’s tawny color can’t be more à propos for the season. You can also sew the suede into a skirt to wear with a tunic of Snowdrop Motif. The mandala pattern incorporates many wonderful colors on this single crepe georgette.

Briar Collection The tale of Sleeping Beauty has seen quite the transformations over the years. In 1634, Giambattista Basile included in his book of folk tales Sun, Moon and Talia, which took cues from Roman Mythology. A king and queen longed for a child and at long last had a stunning daughter, Talia. Astrologers and wise men predicted she would be fatally injured by a splinter from flax. All spinning was banished from the land (this must have seemed spectacular to young girls at the time!). Fast forward several years, and an old woman passing through the countryside is spinning flax on her distaff and spindle. Curious, Talia asks to try it. She catches a splinter under her finger and drops dead. The old woman runs away, panicked. The brokenhearted king put his dead daughter on a velvet throne and closed off the castle to everyone. After some time passed, a king who was out hunting saw his falcon fly into the abandoned castle’s window. He broke into the castle to retrieve the bird but found the princess suspended in time. He “carried her to a bed, where he gathered the first fruits of love,” and then left her. Nine months later the sleeping beauty bore twins. Searching for food, one found her fingers to suck on and sucked the splinter out from under the nail. Talia woke up and named her children Sun and Moon. In the later French adaptation, The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by Charles Perrault, seven good fairies showered the heroine with gifts of beauty and wit, while a long forgotten old fairy who felt slighted she didn’t get an invite cast a curse of death upon the child. From a combination of these two stories we get the Grimm version, and their use of twelve good fairies is a nod to the twelve Roman gods. But the Grimms changed much more than that. They made a handsome prince save the princess, not a married king. Oh, yes, that king who had his way with Talia was married (in the French the queen was an ogre). The queen found out what happened and instructed the cook to chop Sun and Moon up into tiny bits and put them in many dishes for the king to eat. She then had a giant fire lit in the courtyard into which she would throw Talia. Talia disrobed completely, yelling while taking off each layer. The king came and put the queen in the fire, rewarded the cook who hid the children safely in his home rather than cook them, and married Talia. Hmmm...that wasn’t in the Grimm version at all!

rom the mill that brought us our cover fabric from Transition 2019 comes the same plaid with a warmer tone and a pale pink accent, seen on page 22. Briar Plaid is a rayon and polyester blend worsted flannel suiting. The twisted threads help prevent wrinkles, and make the flannel weave more like a menswear suiting. This would make an excellent sport coat, jumper, slacks or skirt. The small repeat is ideal for playing around with the plaid on the bias. Picking up on the lighter color in the plaid is Briar Tropical, a lightweight wool suiting for men and women.

It is sponged and preshrunk, so you can test it for washability in your area (remember, some waters are harsher than others for garments).

Silhouettes #615 “Cathy’s Blouse” Angela Wolf 3145 “The Kate Skirt”

Briar Milano is an espresso brown version of our featured imported double knit in this issue.

Brown is the ultimate fall neutral color, so a Milano sheath dress can be your updated spin on the “little black dress.” We think a waterfall jacket of the Milano will look perfect over a dress or with slacks tailored from Briar Shimmer. This polyester and rayon blend Glen Plaid has a golden thread running down the lengthwise stripes providing a subtle glimmer. “Check out the fantastic effect you get when you sew this plaid into the criss-crossing back of Dana Marie’s “A Twist of Fate” jacket pattern.

Take a walk on the wild side with Briar Leopard crepe georgette. Lightweight with fluid drape, it is washable and wrinkle resistant, making it ideal for travel. We think its colors are a perfect match for Briar Tweed wool suiting. Traditionalists will want to tailor a sport coat or vest, but visionaries will opt to construct a long fall coat lined with Briar Leopard. Use your remnants to stitch up a coordinating hat or purse.

Loes Hinse #5105 “Zipper Jacket”

Aschen Collection One of the most loved fairy stories of all time is that of Aschenputtel. What? Never heard of her? How about Cinderella. At its very root, it is a story of rags to riches for a girl downtrodden in her own home. In the 1634 Italian version by Basile, Cenerentola lived with her father and two sisters, and she chose to sit in cinders. A magic bird aided her in glamming up for royal balls. She married the king and lived happily ever after. Charles Perrault added the fairy godmother aspect 60 years later. He introduced the characters of the evil stepmother and step sisters who called her Cinderwench to jeer her. This story was the basis for the famous Disney movie, with the fairy godmother turning a pumpkin into a carriage and mice into horses to pull it, and the most famous glass slipper. Glass is an important feature for the shoe because fabric and leather shoes can be stretched or shrunk and conforms to fit many sizes and shapes, where glass is unforgiving and molten glass can’t be molded to a foot, so this must be magic. According to D.L. Ashliman, a renown authority on international historical folk tales, Perrault’s moral at the end of the story was: Beauty in a woman is a rare treasure that will always be admired. Graciousness, however, is priceless and of even greater value.... It is a true gift of the fairies. Without it nothing is possible; with it, one can do anything. When the Brothers Grimm wrote Aschenputtel, they eliminated the fairy godmother, using talking birds and a magic tree instead. When the golden slipper was being brought around the village, the evil stepmother told her two daughters to take a knife and cut off parts of their feet to make them fit. The blood they left in the slipper was a clear sign to the prine that these were not his beloved. Yeah, it’s easy to see why Walt went with a feature film based on the more romantic French version than the gorey Grimm one.

We now present you with Aschen Wool, a worsted flannel suiting in rich charcoal grey, perfect for tailoring suiting separates. Sponged and pre-shrunk, the manufacturer recommends dry cleaning, but you can test it for washability in your area if you won’t be using any highmaintenance hair canvas or acetate lining in the finished garment. While we are on the subject of worsted flannels, Aschen Plaid is the same style as VF195-33, but in grey and white with magenta accent. We just loved that hint of color, so we found you Aschen Magenta to liven up your new plaid. This rich magenta is part of our Sofie ponte di Roma double knit collection, full of fabulous colors in this lightweight ponte that is sought after for making high-end T-shirts, wrap dresses, and yoga skirts.

Rampion Collection In central Europe the bluebells grow, and for centuries these prolific little plants were picked and eaten throughout the lands. The tiny edible flowers are decorative treats in salads, the parsnip-like root tastes like radish, and the leaves are similar to spinach. It was so common, it became an important part of a fairy tale. Campanula rapunculus, known more commonly in medieval Europe as rampion, is translated to German as rapunzel. The story of Rapunzel begins with a young pregnant woman who craves these little plants in the ogress’ yard next door. She refused to eat anything else and began to waste away. A deal was struck with the ogress, so the woman could eat all the rampion she craved, but the child she grew inside her would be surrendered upon its birth. A daughter was born and named Rapunzel in honor of the plant that helped give her life. (Sidenote: in Basile’s 1634 book, the story is called Patrosinella, meaning parsley, which is more common in Italy.) The child was tucked away in a tower with no doors or stairs to hide her away from the world, not unlike the story of the Saint Barbara who was likewise locked in a tower by her pagan father to “protect her from the world”. This is another tale the Grimm boys had to soften a bit from their original publication, which was based on an earlier work by Friedrich Schultz in 1790. The prince who falls in love with Rapunzel spends many nights with her and “...they lived in joy and pleasure for a long time.”

In their 1812 edition, the Grimms use the traditional story, wherein Rapunzel asks the ogress why her clothes are becoming tighter (nod, nod, wink, wink). By 1857, the Grimms changed this part, and had Rapunzel question the ogress why she was so much heavier than the young prince whilst climbing her beautiful hair to the tower. In both versions, twins were born to the couple while they were separated, but it was totally downplayed in the later adaptation.
