Smoky Collection In this issue we celebrate Dolly Parton, whose birthday falls on January 19. On February 8th she will receive the MusiCares® Person of the Year Award for her artistic and philanthropic achievements, and this October the Grand Ole Opry will celebrate ‘Dolly Week’ in recognition of her 50 years as an Opry member.

The fourth of twelve children born to a sharecropper in the Smoky Mountains, Dolly Parton reached the heights of super stardom without ever forgetting about, or leaving, her roots. This sharp lady has built an empire in the foothills of the Smokies that employs thousands of local people, and she supports causes dear to that region. In a biopic song she wrote called Coat of Many Colors she sings of her momma sewing her a coat from pieces of rags her family had been given, while her momma told her the Bible story of Joseph’s coat of many colors and all the wonderful things he did. “Now I know we had no money/ But I was rich as I could be/ In my coat of many colors/ My momma made for me.” When she was born, her father, Robert, paid the doctor with a bag of cornmeal, which was all he could afford. He had no formal education, and never learned to read or write, but Dolly regarded him as one of the smartest people she knew.

While her father worked odd jobs, her momma was a homemaker who spent hours singing to her children and telling them stories from the Bible and mountain folklore. The family spent a lot of time singing together on their large front porch. Dolly’s uncle Bill Owens recognized a spark in her at a young age. She first sang in front of an audience at her grandfather’s church when she was six. Uncle Bill gave her an acoustic guitar the following year, and she started writing songs. By age ten she was featured on the Cas Walker radio show in Knoxville, TN, and she recorded her first song at age 13 called Puppy Love - you can hear it on YouTube. Later that year, Johnny Cash introduced her at the Grand Ole Opry where she performed with her uncle Bill. They received three encores. This was a big deal because one of the regular Saturday night performers had given up his spot to give Dolly her big break, and Johnny Cash was so impressed by her that he told her to follow her instincts with her career, which she does to this day.

Let us introduce you to two wonderful sweater knit prints.

Smoky Blooms (VF191-02) and Smoky Bouquet (VF191-04) are on target for this year’s hot fashion trend. The faded pink and merlot of the flowers are set upon a muted ground of either indigo or plum, while heathered black and white adorns the reverse. We encourage you to sew a waterfall front to a cardigan, or an oversized cowl neck where the reverse will show.

This issue is full of Ponte di Roma double knits in various weights, fiber mixes and colors. We love how versatile they are. You can wear pontes as tops, sweaters, jackets, skirts, dresses, slacks. Order extra so you have plenty when the need arises. Our first such knit is Smoky Rouge, a muted dark pink that looks wonderful with both of our featured sweater knits.

This next collection centers around two wonderful suitings.

The first is Nashville Weave, a lightweight and tightly woven raw silk that mingles yarns of warm muted pastels. If you enjoy a casual look, stitch up a simple jacket that you can toss on over Nashville Cream, a French vanilla lightweight cotton jersey knit. Those of you who plan on wearing your new raw silk to a spring special event, sew a lovely blouse from Nashville Breeze, an outstanding tone on tone ivory silk floral jacquard. It is semi-sheer, so wear it over a camisole or underline it with Ambiance Bemberg lining.

The second grouping enhances Nashville Stones (VF191-11), an unusual stretch cotton suiting in various shades of chocolate. This stable stretch-woven is ideal for a sheath dress, jacket and skirt combination, or funky man’s vest. Masterfully pair it with Nashville Charm, a low luster mocha stretch silk charmeuse that begs to be sewn into a blouse (and it looks fantastic with the raw silk suiting!). The charmeuse and suiting will both look sharp when worn with a pair of slacks tailored from Nashville Espresso, a smart wool and rayon stretch-woven low luster and lightweight satin suiting.

Nashville Collection The night Dolly graduated high school she hit the road for Nashville. “Probably the best birthday I ever had was when I turned eighteen, because I had been traveling back and forth to Nashville all those years before, and I knew my Daddy would send a posse after me if I left before I was eighteen.” She signed with Combine Publishing as a songwriter and co-wrote several songs with her uncle Bill Owens. She wrote two Top 10 hits on the country charts in her first two years in Nashville. She earned a regular spot singing on The Porter Wagoner Show, replacing a fan favorite named Norma Jean. “When I first started going out on the road, people in the audience would holler ‘Where’s Norma Jean?’” She signed a singing contract with RCA Victor and recorded a duet with Wagoner, beginning a six year streak of nearly uninterrupted Top 10 singles for the duo. In 1968, at the age of 22, she and Porter Wagoner were named CMA’s Vocal Group of the Year. Throughout her career she has maintained a home in Nashville. Twenty years ago, Nashville Business ranked her as the wealthiest country music star, and last year her net worth was around half a billion dollars. On

the Oprah Winfrey show in 1987, Oprah remarked about Dolly’s down home nature and asked how she keeps her feet on the ground. “Well, my feet ain’t been on the ground in ages with these heels on.....If you walk a mile in my shoes you’ll never walk again.” She followed that up with, “I’m like the girl next door - if you lived next door to an amusement park.” But then, speaking seriously, she said, “I always felt that I was somebody. And I just thought that I was gonna be a star for as long as I remember....I’m not the only person that ever dreamed in that part of the country.

I just dreamed real big and I just did something about it. I got out early. I didn’t get out to get away from them. I just wanted to see other things. I just knew there was a world beyond the Smoky Mountains that I hadn’t seen, and I was just such a curious person. I wanted to be a part of it. I wanted to be loved. I wanted to see people. I wanted people to see me. I wanted to be a part of whatever was big out there, you know, in the world.”

Another spectacular wool blend is this wool and silk houndstooth suiting that brings together burgundy, navy and black on a mocha base. The hand is so incredibly soft. Mrs. Dean Houndstooth is lightweight enough to be tailored into sheath dress which you can wear over a top made from the upcoming polyester print. But first let’s take a look at Mrs. Dean Currant, a Ponte di Roma double knit with a warm, red cast. This one is firm but not stiff, so it is well suited for constructed garments like a knit jacket, slacks, straight skirt, or princess seamed dress.

Mrs. Dean In 1964, Dolly met the love of her life, Carl Dean. “We met the very first day I came to Nashville, before I became a star,” she told Oprah. “We met at a laundromat called the Wishy Washy, and I say it’s been wishy washy ever since.” They married two years later.

While she concentrated on her songwriting and singing career, Carl held his own jobs and eventually owned a paving company.

“People have often asked me why we get along so good. I say it’s because Carl lets me do whatever I think is right and I let him do whatever I think is right. So it works out good.” Carl has stayed out of the spotlight, not attending award shows with her, not being photographed too often. This has provided them a wonderful anonymity when they want to travel. They load up their RV and hit the roads of Tennessee and Kentucky. She told Parade magazine “Sometimes we’ll stay over at a Days Inn [motel] where we can just pull up and sneak me in. We don’t care, as long as the bed’s clean and there’s a bathroom. That’s how we live.” They would have loved to have had children, but Dolly suffered horrible feminine health

Collection issues that caused her to be out of work eighteen months and required surgery. As a result, she was not able to bear a child of her own. “I always love working with children. I never had children of my own. God has his purposes. God didn’t let me have children so everybody’s children could be mine. That’s kind of how I’m looking at it.” She helped raise her younger siblings, and she is godmother to Miley Cyrus, a country and pop star.

In 2016, she and Carl renewed their vows for their 50th wedding anniversary. “We’re really proud of our marriage. It’s the first for both of us. And the last.” Although her stage name is Dolly Parton, her driver’s license says Dolly Dean, and when her parents died, their obituaries listed among the survivors Dolly and Carl Dean. There was a sweet moment during an interview with Oprah when she was asked about retiring from show business. She told Oprah “I have no intentions of retiring unless I should get sick or something should happen to my husband. Other than that I’m going to work until I fall over.”

We totally had fun putting this collection together for you. It’s youthful and off-beat. Sensation Paisley is a printed cotton broadcloth from Robert Kaufman featuring fuchsia, garnet, kumquat and ruby on a black base with gold foil overlay. This would make an exciting skirt, skirt or vest. Pair it with Sensation Garnet blouseweight polyester peachskin. If you live in a colder climate or need a little something to toss on at night, try Seansation Imitation. This medium pile garnet fur has a stable knit back and is perfect for a long vest, full length spring jacket.

Sensation Collection At the tender age of 27, Dolly penned and recorded a song about her professional break with Porter Wagoner. The year was 1973, and the song was called I Will Always Love You. It reached #1 on the Country Music Charts. Elvis Presley’s manager contacted Parton saying his client wanted to record it. Elvis also wanted 50% of the songwriting royalties. Dolly respectfully declined the offer.

Several people thought she was crazy to not jump on the chance to have the King of Rock & Roll record her song. But she followed her instincts and this choice would land her a major financial windfall later on. She did re-record the song in 1982 for the movie The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, again reaching the top of the Country Music Charts. In 1992, the song was recorded by Whitney Houston for the movie The Bodyguard. Talk about your international sensation! The following year the recording won the People’s Choice award for favorite music video, the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Single, the MTV Movie Award for Best Musical Moment, and the Billboard Music Award for #1 World Single.

These were followed the next year with GRAMMY Awards for Re-

cord of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, plus additional awards from Soul Train, the AMAs and international awards. This chart buster for Whitney Houston remained at the top of Billboard’s Top 100 for a then record-breaking 14 weeks, became one of the best selling singles ever, and paid a lifetime of royalties to Dolly Parton.

According to Genius.com, “With ‘I Will Always Love You,’ Parton became the first artist ever to earn a number one record twice with the same song as a singer, and three times as a writer. ‘I Will Always Love You’ is the second song ever to reach the top three on the Billboard Hot 100 in separate chart runs.” When Houston died suddenly in 2012, Dolly tweeted “Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston. I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song, and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, ‘Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.’”

Garnet and mustard look beautiful together, so we have added a trio of winners for you. Sensation Dijon silk crepe georgette can be sewn into a gathered blouse or scarf. We picked this up as a special purchase and are happily passing the savings on to you. From Telio we have the first of two marvelous rayon prints.

Sensation Botanic worsted twill is light enough to be sewn into a blouse, tunic or scarf and substantial enough to be tailored into a kimono style jacket, a skirt or an A-line dress. Full of various berry colors, we found that the wine color was a perfect match to Sensation Chambord, a light twill suiting from Telio. p. 15

The second rayon print from Telio is Prolific Botanic. Telio refers to this fabric as a poplin weave, but it has the hand of a medium weight challis. The wine color will also match the preceding fabric (VF191-24), but we also love how well it looks with Prolific Sand, a tencel and linen lightweight woven that can easily be worn as a tunic or wide legged pants for transitioning into warmer weather. It’s the perfect solid neutral to coordinate with the next three fabrics.

Prolific Collection When researching her legacy, it seems nearly impossible to find one comprehensive source listing all of Dolly’s accomplishments. IMDb.com lists her “filmography” stats, which include: 530 soundtrack credits; 38 acting or voice-over appearances (not including early work on variety shows like The Porter Wagoner Show); 15 production credits for her Sandollar company that made TV hits like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and movies like Father of the Bride; as well as listings for composer, writer, production manager and producer all for television and film. She is the most honored female country performer of all time. Her résumé boasts 25 RIAA certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards with 25 songs reaching number 1 on the Billboard Country Charts - a record for a female artist. She’s had 41 of her albums reach the Top 10 for Country - a record for any artist. World-wide she has sold over 100 million records. On the big screen we have enjoyed her in such popular movies as “9 to 5,” “Steel Magnolias,” and “Joyful Noise.” In 1996 she turned her song Coat of Many Colors into an illustrated children’s book. She then turned that book into a live action TV special in 2015 and issued a reprint of the book the following year due to the success and demand the television program garnered. After giving the commencement address at the University of Tennessee in 2009, she used the speech as inspiration for her book Dream More - Celebrate the Dreamer in You. That same year she published another children’s book called I am a Rainbow which, according to her own website “teaches children to connect their emotions with colors so they can better express their feelings and emotions.” Dolly loves to cook and eat, so it was only natural for her to write Dolly’s Dixie Fixin’s: Love, Laughter and Lots of Good Food. She collected over 100 recipes from family, friends, and her kitchens at Dollywood and Dixie Stampede. All proceeds from her books go to Imagination Library, a charity we’ll tell you about later in this issue.

Appearance Collection The name Dolly Parton conjures up visions of a stunning physique, platinum blonde hair and infectious smile. She is very open when discussing her personal appearance, which she quips is modeled after the town prostitute. She told Entertainment Tonight, “I’m a proud person. I’m not vain. I look at it like it is. If you’ve got the money and you’re going to be out there, you owe it to people not to look like a dog if you can help it.” Her first extensive, candid interview came in 1978 written by Lawrence Grobel for Playboy Magazine. Dolly agreed to pose in a Playboy Bunny outfit for the cover, but she would not remove her clothes for the publication. “There’s a heart beneath the boobs, and a brain beneath the wig.” She openly admits to having plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments throughout the years. “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.” In an interview with Ladies’ Home Journal she remarked, “Ain’t nothin’ I can do about the numbers, but there’s plenty I can do about how I look, and how I act...If somebody asks me point-blank, ‘have you

had plastic surgery?’ It’s like, well, duh. I never talk about it unless someone asks me, but I don’t want to lie about it.” Her husband, Carl, has a good sense of humor about it. According to Dolly he says, “Why should I cheat on her when I get a new woman every six months?”

Directly discussing her iconic breasts, nicknamed “Shock” and “Awe”, “They do seem like public property in a way. They served me well. I don’t know if I’m supporting them or they’re supporting me.” When Oprah Winfrey remarked how Dolly really invented herself, Dolly replied, “God invented me, but I’ve helped him along with some pretty bizarre stuff.” Her weight has always been a big issue for her. When she is thin, her waist can be belted down to eighteen inches for performances, enhancing her hourglass figure. She was heavier about thirty years ago, and it took three years for her to lose the weight. She told Oprah there was a lot of starvation in the beginning, and every diet plan was tried, but now she tones her muscles with weights and eats six tiny meals throughout the day of anything she wants.

Amusement Collection We mentioned that Dolly has never really left the Smoky Mountains, and her big heart is always with the people who live there. She has either created or overtaken several businesses that would entertain tourists and employ thousands of locals in the foothills of the Smokies. In 1961, Dolly teamed up with HFE, an entertainment titan, and created Dollywood, a Appalachian themed amusement park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. If you google a map of that area, you will also see listed Dollywood’s Splash Country Waterpark and Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort. She owns several dinner theatres in eastern Tennessee, including Dolly Parton’s Stampede, Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Adventures, Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show.

Many of her family members work as entertainers and managers at the properties. Her ultimate goal is to create a place where families can gather to reconnect, have fun and make memories together. She visits the parks yearly, opening and closing Dollywood for its season. If you visit Dolly’s DreamMore Resort, you will see on display her Dream Box. “My resort is a dream 30 years in the making, and the items I picked for my Dream Box are closely tied to special people who encouraged me and certain events in my life where that encouragement paid off.” We know some of the contents, including a copy of her Dream More book, a piece of wood from her childhood home’s front porch where her family gathered to sing, a song written for the future to be released in 2045 when the box is publicly opened.

Also to be opened at that time is a sealed mystery box made from chestnut wood, a nod to her uncle Bill Owens and his work with the American Chestnut Foundation to help develop a blight resistant American Chestnut Tree for the woodlands of the Eastern United States. Dolly has always seen herself as a dreamer and encouraged others to dream. “Sometimes, you see folks who have a negative view of dreamers - people who sit around all day on their hindquarters and do absolutely nothing. These folks aren’t dreamers - they are just lazy. To me, dreaming is just part of being alive, inspired, and curious about the world.”

Accolades Collection Over the decades, Dolly has received an enormous amount of recognition, nominations and awards for her music, films, TV shows and philanthropic contributions. Some artists will have an era of popularity for such accolades, but this petite juggernaut has consistently been at the top of her game. I like to do things in pairs, if you know what I mean.” Also coming in pairs were her 2018 Guinness World Records: Most Decades with a Top 20 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart and Most Hits on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart by a Female Artist. “You never know when you start out with your work how it’s going to turn out, but to have these two world records makes me feel very humbled and blessed!” In 2004, the United States Library of Congress presented her with the Living Legends Award for her significant contributions to America’s cultural, scientific and social heritage, and two years later she was recognized for her lifetime contribution to American culture from the Kennedy Center Honors.

Her television program, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, was honored in 2016 with a Christopher Award which celebrates writers, producers, directors, authors and illustrators whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit.” Her TV special also won the Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring TV Program. “I really wanted to celebrate my people, my whole family, who made me who and what I am today.” Its premier drew a record-breaking audience and is the most-watched movie on broadcast television in the last six years. We can totally see this print being worn as a kimono jacket, tunic or A-line dress. The numerous shades of navy, rust and brown are accented by ivory and soft black. Philanthropy Collection When it was announced that Dolly Parton would be honored with the 2019 MusiCares® Person of the Year award, its President and CEO, Neil Portnow, said Dolly “...knows the power of philanthropy and she has used her stardom to contribute to a wide range of causes from natural disasters to education and literacy programs.” The associated Gala event will raise money for the work done by MusiCares® in offering health and human services to members of the music community to help them through hard times. Dolly said, “I’m excited and humbled to be honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year. It’s even more special knowing the gala benefits music people in need.” Dolly started her own organizations to help others. In 1995 she launched Imagination Library in Sevier County, TN, where she was raised. Although her father had been illiterate, Dolly found an incredible freedom through writing songs. She wanted to ensure that children fell in love with reading and books. This virtual library mails a book a month to preschool children who otherwise would not have access to such treasures, including audio and braille books for the visually impaired. “My daddy just loved it when all the little kids would call me ‘The Book Lady.’ That meant more to him than the fact that I had become a star and worked my butt off.” Over 112 million free, age-appropriate books have been mailed, and the program is available in four countries. “If I’m remembered 100 years from now, I hope it will be not for looks but for books. In 2016, Sevier County was ravaged by wildfires. Dolly and the Dollywood Foundation immediately established the My People Fund providing urgent financial assistance to families whose homes were destroyed in the fires to the tune of over $8.9 million at the rate of $1000 per family per month for six months. “We want to provide a hand up to those families who have lost everything in the fires. I know it has been a trying time for my people and this assistance will help get them back on their feet.”

One of the recipients said in an interview that, “Dolly has a song about ‘My Mountains, My Home, My People.’ We’re her people. She’s our people. And we appreciate all this.” In 1990, Dollywood opened the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary run by the American Eagle Foundation.

A 1.5 million-cubic-foot outdoor aviary houses birds that cannot be released in the wild. The breeding program will raise eaglets in stages for release into the Smokies. Her efforts to preserve our national symbol of freedom earned her the Partnership Award from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2003. From her Coat of Many Colors to her wigs of many styles, no dream was ever too big and no mountain ever too high for the little country girl who turned the world into her stage.”

From Loes Hinse: Criss Cross Top & Boot Skirt The top can have a slightly gathered effect as seen in the photo, or leave it as a flat panel. Two hem lengths.

The slightly pegged skirt can be styled with a front and a back slit, as shown. You can also layer two fabrics, or have slits at the side seams in addition to the front and back seams. Skirt has back darts, elastic waist, and is suitable for knits and wovens, including sheer lace for the layered view.

This second group is similar to the first with a knit solid and a woven solid that both enhance the central print.

Philanthropy Jade cotton jersey knit offers up its cool color in a breathable knit that pulls out the pop of jade in Philanthropy Mahal rayon challis print. This is the same print as VF191-50 but in a great coral color - consider using the two prints together in a piecework garment. We emplore you to incorporate Philanthropy Fresh coral rayon challis as a bias binding or contrast collar and cuffs for a blouse or a kimono style jacket. Wear the new jacket over your jade knit top and head out for a day of fun with friends.
