Zingiber Collection Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a rhizome, or root, packed with hot flavor. For thousands of years Chinese medicines have used ginger to aid in digestion and circulation as well as an expectorant for clearing chest congestion. Saint Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) wrote in her comprehensive “Physica” recipes using ginger in conjunction with zedoary, galingale and wine to settle the stomach, and still today moms give their kids ginger ale to heal an upset tummy. Ginger, along with turmeric and pepper are three key ingredients in Indian cuisine that are being studied by MD Anderson Cancer Center for possible links to cancer fighting benefits. If you don’t often cook with ginger, give it a try. Use a potato peeler to shave off the rough skin and toss an inch or two into your next pot of chicken broth. For something more potent, peel and slice thin rounds of ginger, put them in a pot with some lemon juice and honey, add boiling water and let it steep for 20 minutes to create a soothing tea with a ginger spice kick.

Zingiber Navy and Zingiber Claret are incredibly soft, double-faced suede cloths with cross-grain stretch and great recovery. These are ideal for jackets, vests, color blocking or appliqué work. The two rayon prints, Zingiber Thistles and Zingiber Botanic, have the soft hand and drape of the finest rayon challis. Cassia Collection As fall creeps in, the cold winds pick up and we find ourselves reaching for foods and drinks that will warm us. One of the most popular fall spices is cinnamon, spicing up our pumpkin lattes and enriching our breads and pies. Cinnamon is cultivated from the inner bark of the Cinnamomum plants, and the most common varieties for international food commerce are referred to as cassia. Saint Hildegard recommends you lick the powder from your hand while eating bread to clear up a congested nose. Chinese herbalists issue doses of cinnamon to promote sweating, aid in circulation, and to help counter effects of anemia.

Glühwein, or mulled wines, date back to Roman times, and are tasty concoctions to warm you on cold days. Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, star anise and a bit of sugar to red wine, heat through, add a shot of brandy and enjoy!

The first five fabrics in our Cassia Collection are imported Italian rayon jersey knits. Lightweight with ample stretch, these tantalizing textiles are ripe for ruching and wrapping in surplice tops, flowing skirts, palazzo pants and relaxed sweater sets with waterfall fronts. Mix and match them with one another for endless wardrobe options. Cassia Taupe, which is knit with a subtle diagonal angle, is also a lovely coordinate for Cassia Heather. Myristica Collection Inside a fruit is a seed, and wrapped around that seed is a bright red lacy covering. These would be the layered products of Myristica fragrans - the nutmeg tree. This evergreen which grows in Indonesia and Asia produces two spices in one: the seed within the fruit is nutmeg, and its intense red aril, or covering, is mace. Many things in life that are red indicate a warning or danger, and these spices contain natural chemicals, myristicin and safrole, that are components in psychoactive drugs and “ecstasy,” respectively. When eaten in large doses, one can experience a high. Malcolm X wrote about purchasing large quantities of nutmeg, concealed in matchboxes, and adding the spice to water, while he served time in prison. “A penny matchbox full of nutmeg had the kick of three or four reefers.”

Autumnal wardrobes require layering to accommodate fluctuating temperatures inside and out, and we present to you a handsome collection of currant and golden raisin fabrics from which to build your wardrobe. Myristica Crepe is an interesting polyester suiting with an almost herringbone appearance.

Myristica Raisin wool blend suiting is a lightweight tropical that can be worn all year long. We love how beautifully Myristica Bouclé pulls these two fabrics together. With one bouclé jacket you can wear the neutral crepe as a skirt with a blouse of Myristica Mystique burnout, or wear your bouclé jacket over a sheath dress of the raisin suiting. Pair Myristica Glitz with any of the suitings and toss on a scarf of the burnout for good measure. For Myristica Mystique we recommend you make a wonderful blouse and underline the body but not the sleeves for effect. Clavus Collection Which spice is a flower bud picked before it blooms? Clove.

Grown in warm, humid regions, the compact clove evergreen needs to be harvested at just the right moment. When the flower buds turn from green to deep red, they are picked and dried, turning their familiar dark brown color. Shaped like a club, cloves are known in other languages as clavas or clavus.

Since ancient times, cloves have been used to clear up chest congestion by making coughs more productive. Teas and foods with cloves were administered to calm upset stomachs.

Saint Hildegard wrote, “If one suffers in his head, so that his head is stuffy, and it is as if he were deaf, he should eat cloves often, and the stuffiness in his head will diminish.” There is new research being done to show that the oils and compounds in cloves have an analgesic effect, antimicrobial agents, and act as antihistamines. Cloves, like cinnamon and nutmeg, are believed to aid in digestive ailments, and the antimicrobial agents would surely kill parasites and bad bacteria in the digestive tract. Early Celtic yule gifts were pomanders, or cloves stuck into an apple or an orange and hung by string or ribbon to give off a lovely scent. Make yourself a pomander to put in a potpourri dish, in a dresser, or to hang in the closet.

Cuminum Collection Among the myriad plants in the parsley family we find cuminum cyninum from which we extract the cumin seed. It is widely believed that cumin was originally cultivated in ancient Persia and was carried via the Silk Roads eastward to China and westward to Europe. The Chinese believe these pungent seeds have gastric curative effects and would chew them to calm flatulence, as well as cook strong foods like lamb and stews with toasted cumin seeds to aid in the digestion of the dish. Saint Hildegarde encouraged people to grind cumin with pepper and pimpernel, then mix the powder with wheat, egg yolk and water to make cookies to calm nausea. During the age of exploration, the seeds and plants made their way to South America where today they are still popular in dishes like tacos, chili and sopa de tortilla. But the majority of cumin is ingested in India, where it is a staple in curry dishes, drinks, candies and so much more. Around 63% of the world’s cumin is grown in India, and 90% of that is consumed in that country alone! Hyffa Collection When the bloom has faded from the rose, we tend to cut the spent flower back to encourage new growth. But if you let the plant continue to develop, a bright red fruit will appear. Hildegarde von Bingen referred to these hips as hyffa. A cousin to crab-apples, these fruits can be made into jams, baked into pies, and dried to be used in herbal teas. During the second World War it was discovered that rose hips carried high vitamin C and Iron contents right when citrus fruits were in scarce supply.

The British government “organized the harvesting of as many rose hips as possible in England as a substitute source of Vitamin C.” Homeopathic shops today sell dried rose hips for herbal teas to boost iron in menstruating women. This vibrant fruit of the rose bush inspired the name of this exciting intense rose collection.

This double knit fabric has a plain face and loop pile reverse. The looped side resembles the loops of terry cloth, like you see in towels, so people believe it has great moisture wicking properties. However, the fiber determins the wicking properties, not the style of the knit. What we love about these two selections from Telio are the weight and the stretch. Metra Fuchsia and Metra Ebony are lighter than sweatshirt fleece, but slightly heavier than jersey knit, and they have more stretch than a ponte de Roma double knit, so they are ideal choices for lightweight sweater sets, sweatshirts, yoga pants and any number of upscale casual apparel. The colors are rich, so you can easily make separates that can be dressed up for an evening out.

Metra Collection Growing wild through the fields of Europe are the daisy-like flowers of the chamomile plant. German chamomile, matricaria chamomilla, has been referred to as the Water of Youth for its restorative properties. Ancient Egyptians cultivated chamomile to cure fevers and dedicated this sunny bloom to their sun god Ra. It’s sweet apple blossom smell flavored early beer before hops came into favor. Saint Hildegard refers to this wildflower as metra, and wrote that “it will gently provide a purgation of mucus and internal fetid matter and bring on menses.” Before you enjoy that relaxing cup of chamomile tea, have some antihistamine at the ready, for this relative of ragweed can conjure some allergic reactions when ingested in large amounts.

for a hipster while mature enough for a former hippy. Metra Dapples is the first of two such dull satin stretch polyester prints, the second being a rich red in the last collection.

This medium weight woven has enough body for a figure flattering dress, jacket, or skirt. We are excited to offer two high end French terry knits. Kesten Collection Chestnuts roasting on an open fire....actually do have some wonderful benefits for you. These large brown tree nuts become tender and creamy when roasted, are low in calories, fat and cholesterol, are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, are gluten free, and they contain several healthful vitamins. Saint Hildegard von Bingen wrote a thousand years ago that the fruit of the kestenbaum (chestnut tree) should be cooked in water and given to a person whose “brain is empty from dryness, and who because of that is weak in the head.” The chestnuts would ease the headache and restore the nerves. The French and Italians concocted confections to please the spirit. Mont Blanc is an Italian dessert of puréed, sweetened chestnuts squeezed through a piping bag into a tower and topped with whipped cream to resemble the mountain of the same name. In the south of France (and northern Italy) one will find marron glacé, or candied chestnuts, where the kernel of the nut has been soaked, repeatedly over the course of several days, in a sugar syrup and then lightly toasted to dry.

Licorice Collection “Chocolate is the silk of the candy world; black licorice is the leather.” - Temptations: Igniting the Pleasure and Power of Aphrodisiacs By Michael Albertson, Ellen Albertson Licorice root has been cultivated for over a thousand years to enhance sexual drive, reduce fatigue, and ease womanly discomfort.

Steeped in teas, ground up for flavoring foods, and put into healing tisanes, the uses for licorice around the world are as diverse as our cultures. Modern science has been exposing the chemicals of licorice that actually do regulate the anti-stress hormone cortisol, and components that act as a natural hormone replacement for estrogen. But the National Institutes of Health warn people to go easy on their intake of real licorice root. When you’ve consumed too much, you can suffer horrible effects like severe water retention, a drop in potassium, and muscle weakness. Fear not if you enjoy licorice whips, as the concentration should be too weak to cause problems, and you can always give that licorice flavor to teas by substituting licorice with the similar flavor found in star anise.

Zedoary Collection Zedoary is not a spice you see in the chain supermarkets here in the states, but it is rather popular in Asia and in Asian markets. Also called white turmeric, this rhizome smells like mango but tastes like (and looks like) ginger, and is popular in Thai and Indonesian cuisines. For centuries the East has employed the healing properties of zedoary to calm bodily shakes when steeped in water overnight and imbibed the next morning. Recipes also exist for topical pastes to be applied to cuts because of its antiseptic powers. In Italian renaissance letters, a woman known as Mama Riminalda wrote a letter to her sister which included a detailed recipe for avoiding further miscarriages, and zedoary was one of many ingredients. However, today’s herbalists warn that zedoary can cause miscarriage and should be avoided by pregnant women.

Red hot and ravishing, we end our Fall 2016 catalog with the perfect color to take you through fall and into the winter holidays, followed

like a charmeuse, but its beautiful dull satin face is not overwhelming.
