ince Monday, the cost of energy and potable water services increased to levels never seen before in Puerto Rico. These, along with the increasing prices in gas, food and several other products will impact not only the consumer’s pocket but will also affect government collections, according to economy and policy analysts. Economist José Caraballo Cueto anticipated that living in Puerto Rico will become more expensive. He said these increases come at the worst moment because the island
is experiencing “the highest inflation in over a decade.” The increase in the base rate the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewers Authority (PRASA) charges customers is 4.95%. Also, the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) approved last week a 4.6 cents per kilowatt/hour (kWh) increase to the electricity bill. This is the seventh consecutive increase approved by the Energy Bureau, and places the kilowatt hour price for residential customers at 33.4 cents, a historical figure in the price of energy in Puerto Rico.
