Your Support Helps Our Most Vulnerable
Adapting helps meet the mission needs and provides future opportunities.

For over 125 years, through your generosity, Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana has helped children, adults, seniors, and people with disabilities. Thanks to you, we’re able to help our most vulnerable and step-up when the going gets tough. Between the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the devastation caused by Hurricane Ida, this has been a difficult year. However, because of your continuous support, you’ve enabled Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana to continue our mission.
One such service that has adapted to the changing times and is succeeding is our Fresh Food Factor. Fresh Food Factor features a commercial kitchen that currently serves nearly 6,000 students a day by providing healthy meals and snacks. Recently, it has expanded its operations to include contract packaging, or co-packing for local and regional brands. For these brands, our teammates at Fresh Food Factor produce a variety of products for sale at grocery and convenience stores throughout the United States.

Several local companies are now having Fresh Food Factor produce their products for retail sale. This includes New Orleans-based Brass Roots, which developed healthy, nutritious snacks made from sacha inchi seeds in place of traditional nuts. Their variety of products can be purchased at Whole Foods Markets, Sprouts Farmers Markets and Wegmans.

With the profits generated from co-packing operations at Fresh Food Factor, Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana can fund critical services

for the vulnerable populations in the region.
Adapting to support our community’s needs is what Volunteers of America does best. Fresh Food Factor’s co-packing program is just one example of how we do this. And your generosity is the backbone of our success during these challenging times. Thank you for your continued support of Volunteers of America’s mission of helping the most vulnerable.
Thank You For Helping Change Lives
Last year, Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana touched the lives of more than 61,000 of our most vulnerable neighbors in the 16 parishes we serve. With the challenges for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters affecting our area, serving more people takes on even greater meaning.
With your dedicated support, you allowed us to make a positive impact in the lives of thousands of people. For that, we say thank you—whether you are a new supporter or a long-time friend. Within the pages of this annual report, you will see the difference you made throughout southeast Louisiana.
As you take some time to look closely at our facts and figures, please remember the true measure of success is the difference we made in the lives of the people we serve. Our success comes in the hope we create, the stability we provide for those in need, and the transformation that takes place across southeast Louisiana in the 16 parishes that we serve.
You can see that hope in our adoptive families who were able to celebrate the finalization of their adoptions even when the courts were shuttered from the pandemic. Our Adoption and Maternity program creates forever families and also helps mothers receive pregnancy counseling while providing outreach training to the community. Lives are changed forever because of you.
Stability is essential for individuals to live full, happy lives, and you can see the stability we provide for people who are part of two programs geared toward people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. As Hurricane Ida made landfall in our area, over 200 of our most vulnerable residents safely rode out the storm in Texas. Thanks to you, they were able to create lasting positive memories from their evacuation stay.
You can see communities being transformed each day by affordable housing options such as The Terraces on Tulane. Our seniors like Ms. Beverly have a safe and secure home, and a community that looks after them and provides needed resources. Because of your support, Ms. Beverly is creating a new family at The Terraces on Tulane.
As we continue to launch new programs in response to an everchanging world, those are just a few examples of the people you helped last year by supporting our more than 20 programs. Thanks to your support, Volunteers of America will continue to adapt and do great things today, tomorrow and for many years to come.

Seniors Find Family and Stability Because of Your Generosity
The Terraces on Tulane provide a safe home and loving community.
Since a very early age, Ms. Beverly wanted to become a nurse, probably due to her desire to help others. She grew up in the Magnolia Projects, attended local schools in the area including Booker T. Washington High School. A marriage after her high school graduation followed by her first child (a baby boy) meant that her dreams of being a nurse had to wait.
But that burning desire continued even after she had her second child—another baby boy. She attended nursing school while taking care of her boys. “It was very challenging,” she said, “There was a test every day, and you had to keep up.” Through hard work, and a lot of nights with little to no sleep, she earned her degree.
As a licensed practical nurse, Ms. Beverly loved helping people rehabilitate from injuries or surgery. She especially enjoyed working with seniors, helping them in their homes after they had been hospitalized.
With her grown sons living in Texas and Georgia, Ms. Beverly had a nice home in Algiers.
Unfortunately, Ms. Beverly developed a disorder in her eyes which made her very sensitive to bright light and unable to read the small print of her patients’ medicine bottles. Doctors’ repeated attempts to address her disorder were unsuccessful, and she was left with no choice but to retire from her 33-year career of helping others. Now she needed help.
Ms. Beverly needed an affordable place to live. As a native New Orleanian, she did not want to move in with one of her sons. What was she to do? That’s when she learned about the Terraces on Tulane, a vibrant residence with 200 seniors who enjoy safe, affordable housing, with wonderful amenities. There was a hair stylist on the sixth floor, a patio on the second floor, and an exercise room on the first floor. She moved into a one-bedroom apartment and has lived there for four years. She found the Terraces to be a special community where the residents and staff watch out for each other
At the Terraces, Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana creates a family atmosphere and embraces all the residents. Because of your support, Volunteers of America can make sure that Ms. Beverly has community, stability, and a safe environment to enjoy again.

Corporate Social Responsibility Promotes Giving

Gulf Coast Bank & Trust gives the gift of time.
During these difficult times, large and small businesses are giving their support through the gift of time by engaging in corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Thanks to Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company who came together during the holiday season to brighten up the lives of our residents at the Tulane Single Room Occupancy (SRO) facility.
A group of twenty team members put their hands to work cleaning and decorating the facility, which brought an added touch of Christmas cheer to the residents.

"I'm usually able to keep my emotions under control but yesterday made me cry buckets of happy tears," says Gay James, Tulane SRO property manager. "It was so beautiful seeing the faces of each resident when they first noticed what was taking placeand when they saw the finished product - some were also moved to tears. They not only cleaned and decorated our home, but they shared Christmas joy and restored hope to all of us."
Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana appreciates and welcomes any business, small or large, who want to freely give their valuable time to help the most vulnerable in the community. Through Volunteer Services there are a variety of projects designed to meet the needs of our organization, and special projects can be tailored for large and small groups based on their needs.
Corporate partnerships such as these are not only beneficial to our organization, but they are beneficial to business by promoting positive brand image, boosting employee engagement, and increasing media coverage. Achievements of corporate partners are celebrated by telling others about the contributions they made in service to the people we serve. As a bonus, some companies offer a corporate match, which multiplies the impact of their philanthropic efforts.
Thanks to all our corporate donors, your generosity enables us to continue to serve the most vulnerable. For more information on how you or your group can volunteer, please contact Crystal Harris at charris@voasela.org.
Your Support Is Creating Forever Families
The Adoption and Maternity program improves the lives of children, mothers, and adoptive parents.
Before they married, Aaron and Jessica knew that they wanted to adopt. It was important to both. They hired an attorney to help with their search. “Don’t get emotionally invested,” he advised. Little did they know the journey they were about to embark.
Four years of disappointment passed. There were multiple times when they were so sure their waiting was over that they bought a car seat - only to have their hopes dashed. “We’d give it away to friends who were expecting,” Aaron said. “It was too hard to have the reminder in our house.”
In March 2021, on the verge of giving up on their dream of adopting a child, Aaron and Jessica met with Adoption & Maternity program manager, Lori Arceneaux. Jessica assured Lori that they would not get emotionally invested. “How can you not be emotionally invested?” Lori responded. With Lori and Volunteers of America, they felt the comfort, communication, and connection that they had not experienced in the prior four years. “It’s not if you’re going to get a baby,” Lori stated. “It’s when you will get a baby.”
With Lori and Volunteers of America, [Aaron and Jessica] felt the comfort, communication, and connection that they had not experienced in the prior four years.
Six months later, an expectant couple contacted Volunteers of America and were interested in giving their baby up for adoption. A week later, they gave birth to a baby boy. Soon after, they met Aaron and Jessica and felt confident that Aaron and Jessica could provide their baby with the life they envisioned for him but knew they could not provide. Aaron and Jessica were thankful to have met their son’s—who they named James—birth parents. They look forward to sharing the love that James’s birth parents had for him.
Aaron and Jessica have loved every moment of the past five months as James’s parents. They look forward to continuing to share new experiences and make new memories with their son.
Thanks to your support, our Adoption & Maternity services continues to help mothers dealing with unplanned pregnancies and creates Forever Families. With your continued support, this program will continue to improve the lives of children, birth mothers, and adoptive parents.

VETERANS SERVICES
Your Support Helps Our Most Vulnerable
Veterans are getting back on their feet because of your support.
Forty-nine years ago, a young man named Bernell began his military service. Born and raised in the Lower Ninth Ward and the middle child of 8, he chose to enter the Air National Guard located at Jackson Barracks. Since it was in his neighborhood. he figured he could still help his mom with his younger siblings. During his time stationed at Jackson Barracks, Bernell married and began a family of his own.
After Bernell’s service time was up, Bernell took a job at the Veterans Administration as a pharmacy clerk, where he helped veterans such as himself get the assistance they needed.
However, Bernell’s circumstances in life began to change. He went through a divorce, lost his job, and lost several family members to illness, accidents, and shootings.
“Looking back at my life, I’ve always suffered from depression,” Bernell said. “But after all the misfortune I went through in such a short amount of time, I sank into such a deep depression where there was no way out.”
Before long, Bernell was homeless, battling mental health issues, and suffering from addiction.
But thanks to your support, Bernell was able to get the help he needed.
Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana’s Veteran Services located Bernell and provided him with shelter at the Oscar J. Tolmas Veterans Pavilion.

“By the grace of God, Volunteers of America entered my life,” said Bernell. “With Volunteers of America’s help, I applied for and received Veterans Assistance, entered rehab to get clean, and got my life back.”
Now 68, the Lower Ninth Ward native has hope again. Bernell has been drug-free for almost two years, is treating his underlying mental health issues, and has a great relationship with his remaining family.

“Because of Volunteers of America, I’m alive today,” said Bernell. “This wonderful organization has allowed me to maximize my life, and, for that, I could not be more thankful.”
“ With Volunteers of America’s help, I applied for and received Veterans Assistance, entered rehab to get clean, and got my life back.” —Bernell
