XXXXX AREA?

Your Support Helps Meet The Needs Of The Most Vulnerable

No matter the challenges, Volunteers of America provides hope and stability to those in need.

Your generosity allows Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana to go where we are needed most and help those in dire straits, and your support changed the lives of more than 47,000 persons in need last year.

These past months have been a strain on everyone, but our mission is clear—Help The Most Vulnerable. Your support enables Volunteers of America’s more than 20 different social service programs to help those in need in our 16-parish service area, which covers

all of southeast Louisiana. It also allows Volunteers of America to adjust with these uncertain times.

For nearly 125 years, Volunteers of America has worked to help children, adults, seniors and persons with disabilities. Now, we’ve begun to adapt to meet the unique needs presented by COVID-19 while also continuing to create hope, provide stability and transform communities.

Our Fresh Food Factor program is an example of stepping up to meet the needs of the community. When COVID-19 changed the world in March, our Fresh Food Factor program switched from serving up school lunches in cafeterias to providing community feeding sites with fresh, healthy meals for families struggling to make ends meet.

Even with those changes, we continued our current programs by providing stability for those who need it most. That stability comes in many forms—from a roof over seniors' heads to helping people with intellectual disabilities like Adam remain safe and cared for. Our work is never done, but it’s not work when people like Adam, who need 24-hour support to ensure they can still live and work independently, become family.

Those are just a few examples of how you have changed lives over the past year. Many more can be found in this Annual Report. Thank you for your support of Volunteers of America’s mission of helping our community’s most vulnerable.

Thank You For Helping Change Lives

Last year, Volunteers of America Southeast Louisiana touched the lives of more than 47,000 of our most vulnerable neighbors. That number takes on even greater meaning, considering the challenges and obstacles presented by COVID-19.

You made a positive impact in the lives of thousands of people. Whether you are a new supporter or a long-time friend, you can see the difference you made on every page of this Annual Report.

Take a minute to look closely at our facts and figures, but remember the true measure of success is the difference we made in the lives of the people we serve. Our success comes in the hope we create, the stability we provide for those who need it most and the transformation that takes place in the 16 parishes that we serve.

You can see that hope in our adoptive families like Nicole, Josh and baby Henry. Our Adoption and Maternity program creates forever families and also helps mothers receive pregnancy counseling while providing outreach training to the community. Lives are changed forever because of you.

Stability is essential for individuals to live full, happy lives, and you can see the stability we provide for people like Donna through our Community Living Services program. For nearly 30 years, Donna has not let her intellectual disability slow her down, and she’s been a part of our Constance Community Home family. Thanks to you, we’ll continue to be there for Donna and many others.

You can see communities being transformed each day by affordable housing options such as The Terraces on Tulane. Our seniors have safe, secure housing and a community that looks after them and provides needed resources.

As we continue to launch new programs in response to an everchanging world, those are just a few examples of the people you helped last year by supporting our more than 20 programs. Thanks to your support, Volunteers of America will continue to adapt and do great things today, tomorrow and for many years to come.

Our Seniors Are Safe Because Of Your Generosity

The Terraces on Tulane offers a safe home and loving community in tough times.

Thanks to your support, The Terraces on Tulane is a vibrant place filled with 200 seniors who enjoy safe, affordable housing and a special community that looks after each resident.

When the pandemic began in March, it put The Terraces staff and residents to the test, but there was never a doubt that Volunteers of America would step up to that challenge. There was never a doubt that Volunteers of America would ensure that our seniors would remain safe and cared for in the most trying times.

“It’s a special community here at The Terraces,” says Senior Service Coordinator Adrena Chandler. “Our residents care about one another, and they are like family to the staff. We knew we had to find a way to keep them safe and continue to meet their needs. There was never a doubt that we would get that done.”

The Terraces provide residents with not only housing but a community. On any given day, residents gather in the common areas to talk, watch TV, receive meal distributions, and enjoy each other’s company. But all of that had to stop when the pandemic hit. The staff held socially-distanced food distributions to ensure that residents had plenty to eat, and the staff increased their wellness checks just to make sure our seniors were safe. Everyone came together to make sure we could get through this together. When restrictions were loosened, the staff held sociallydistanced bingo outside as residents wore masks and enjoyed the welcomed social interaction. The event was a hit and brought smiles to everyone’s faces. It was a perfect example of The Terraces community.

Thanks to your support, our seniors will continue to remain safe no matter what the future holds. The Terraces on Tulane and our other senior housing facilities will provide safe, affordable homes for years to come.

2 ELDERLY SERVICES

Your Support Is Providing Homes For People Like Donna

The Community Living Services program allows people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full, happy lives.

Since 1992, Donna has only known one home— our Constance Community Home—and your generosity means that she will continue to receive the support she needs to live a full, happy life.

Last year, the Community Living Services program provided a safe home for 57 individuals who would otherwise had nowhere to turn. That includes people like Donna, who has been with us for nearly 30 years.

“This house has taken care of me for 28 years,” says Donna, a 68-year-old woman with an intellectual disability. “We’re all independent. We can do our own laundry; We get to be independent. We all get along and take care of each other. This place is lovely.”

That’s the program’s focus—providing a home to those who need it while also teaching residents to remain independent. Donna does more than help out around the house. She has worked at a local grocery store in the flower department for the past few years, and before that, she bagged groceries. She also works at a local day program twice a week.

Since 1974, when Volunteers of America opened its first New Orleans community home, we have provided housing and care coordination

to low-income individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our seven community homes provide 24-hour support and supervision. Staff members ensure a comfortable, family-like environment and help residents achieve independent living through community connections, education and training.

Volunteers of America believes that persons with developmental disabilities, unable to live independently in their own homes, function more productively and with greater self-esteem in small, residential settings rather than in institutions.

For many of our residents, Volunteers of America will be home for life. For others, it will be a place to gain life and self-care skills that will allow them to move on to our Supported Living Services program in their own apartments or with their families. Whatever their needs, Volunteers of America will be there every step of the journey.

Our seven community homes provide 24-hour support and supervision. Staff members ensure a comfortable, family-like environment and help residents achieve independent living through community connections, education and training.

3 INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY SERVICES

Your Support Is Creating Forever Families

The Adoption and Maternity program improves the lives of children, mothers and adoptive parents.

Your support has created forever families like Nicole, Josh and baby Henry for more than 75 years.

And that support does so much more. It helps mothers receive pregnancy counseling and provides outreach training to the community about the loving option of adoption and how to help families navigate adoption. Your generosity is truly changing lives for the better—just ask Nicole and Josh.

Even before they began their lives together as a married couple, Nicole and Josh talked about adopting a child. After trying unsuccessfully to become parents, they began to consider adoption. The couple turned to Volunteers of America after their first adoption failed.

Once Nicole and Josh met the social worker with Volunteers of America, they knew they were in the right place to create their family. Volunteers of America was the missing piece they were trying to find during their journey to become parents.

Once they met the social worker with Volunteers of America, they knew they were in the right place to create their family. Volunteers of America was the missing piece they were trying to find during their journey to become parents. Then one day, they received the call that would change their lives.

“Seeing all his curly hair, we knew from the moment we saw him that he was our son and we had been waiting for him," Nicole said, about meeting Henry for the first time. "We knew he was the one from the moment we saw him.”

Another “meant-to-be moment” was when they shared the name Henry with the birth parents. It was the birth father’s middle name as well as his father’s name. Josh and Nicole look forward to the day they can share with Henry the multiple special meanings behind his name.

“We’ve always wanted to adopt," Josh said. "We talked about it early on. We thought we might adopt after having one or two children of our own, but that’s not the way life ended up. So it was an easy decision to choose adoption, and we’re glad we did.”

Thanks to your support, children like Henry will continue to have a bright future in loving homes.

Veterans Are Getting Back On Their Feet Because Of You

Supportive Services for Veterans Families is changing the lives of those who served.

Our Supportive Services for Veterans Families (SSVF) program is changing the lives of individuals who have given so much for this country, and that is only possible because of your support.

The SSVF program is a rapid rehousing and prevention program that helps veterans and their families who are experiencing or are on the verge of homelessness in Louisiana. Veterans who are enrolled in the program work with Volunteers of America case managers to be reintegrated into the workforce and become self-sufficient. Services include housing, counseling, education, vocational guidance, job preparation, resume writing, financial planning, money management, and other assistance based on individual needs.

This program has changed the lives of people like Chester. After entering our program, Chester started school and began to work at a restaurant, but his mental health struggles with bipolar and schizophrenia

meant he had a setback. But we didn’t give up on Chester, and now, he has a full-time job and his own apartment.

The SSVF program also changed Mark’s life. He was living on the streets after being released from prison. It was a tough stretch for the veteran, but those days are behind him now. He’s back on his feet after obtaining a job at a local fish market. With steady employment, he was able to get his own apartment and has a bright future. Even when the pandemic began in March, our case managers continued to visit homeless encampments searching for veterans who qualify for the program and may need assistance.

These are just a couple of examples of the hundreds of homeless veterans and their families that we serve as part of our mission at Volunteers of America. Thanks to your support, we will continue to serve the most vulnerable in our community and see that they are cared for.

1. Required minimum distributions (RMDs) from certain retirement plans and accounts, including traditional IRAs, are suspended for 2020. If you are 70½ years of age, you can still make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD), which lowers the fair market value of your IRA and can have the benefit of lowering your RMD amount for future years.

2. For taxpayers who do not itemize, if you make a $300 charitable contribution you can add it as a deduction on top of the standard deduction. This is for cash gifts only.

3. The adjusted gross income limitation for charitable gifts is lifted for 2020. Typically, when you give a cash gift to charity only 60% of that gift is able to be deducted from your adjusted gross income. For any cash gift you make to charity this year, you can deduct the full amount of the contribution on your 2020 tax return.

President/CEO Jim LeBlanc To Retire After 37 Years

Volunteers of America continues growth in CEO’s final year.

When President/CEO Jim LeBlanc retires on Dec. 31, 2020, it will be the end of 37 years with the agency, but his legacy will live on.

When Jim started as President/CEO, Volunteers of America employed about 200 people and served between 10,000 15,000 individuals. Now, the agency boasts 20-plus programs run by more than 600 employees serving more than 47,000 individuals each year.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this amazing organization,” Jim says. “I am blessed that the good Lord placed me on this path so many years ago. As I depart Volunteers of America, our organization is in a strong position because of your generosity in helping the agency assist the people we are called to serve.”

Under Jim’s leadership, Volunteers of America increased the number of community homes for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, started our Supported Living Services program and invested in more mental health services that continue to grow. These are just a few of the positive changes that were only possible because of you.

“Thank you for being our partner in good times and difficult times,” Jim says. “I love the consumers we serve and their inspiring stories. This work is only possible because of supporters like you.”
