One Lesson from The

Book of Esther BY SHARON E. LOCKLEAR, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF The Book of Esther is a compilation of lessons to be learned and mastered. The most important lesson for me was Obedience. Queen Vashti did not obey her king and was dethroned (NLT Esther 1:13-20). The queen lost her throne and not only was she no longer queen, she was also banished. Queen Vashti lost everything. The importance of obedience for a Christian is obeying GOD. The definition of obey is comply with the command, direction, or request of (a person, or a law); submit to the authority of, carry out (a command or instruction), behave in accordance with (a general principle, natural law, etc).

11:28 NLT, James 1: 22-25 NLT). Obedience to GOD proves our love (1 John 5: 2-3 NLT, 2 John 6 NLT). Obedience is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:2223 NLT). Obedience will not be learned overnight, it is a lifelong Christian process. Daily prayer, meditation, studying the Bible, attending service, worshipping with our Christian brothers and sisters will help us to be obedient. Allowing GOD to replace our will with divine will, assists us to be more obedient. Obedience Bible Verses

As a young Christian, I struggled with obedience, I accepted Christ and desired to continue to obey my laws and rules per my interpretation, by my might and my power. It did not work, that line of reasoning failed miserably. Prayer, humility and Christian education taught me the need to embrace obedience. Becoming obedient was a process, accepting GOD’s will and authority was a choice. Understanding the why of obedience to GOD is important.

RENOWN PHOTOGRAPHER

KIMBERLY TAYLOR Kimberly Taylor is a successful photographer/owner of the visual branding company, Kimazing Photography. Through Kimazing, Kim has collaborated with many successful women of color, helping them grow their businesses through stunning visuals that bolster their respective brands. Kim believes her success is rooted in several things: her passion for photography, her talent for capturing a client’s strength and elegance, intelligence and beauty.

Still, she gave over twenty years of her life to that job. And as one decade bled into the next, that little voice in her head — the one that reminded Kim that the time is now — grew louder and louder. But no matter how loud that inner voice grew, Kim kept her drive locked away from the world. Then, in October 2015, Kim experienced two events that would inspire her to set her God-given gift free and share it with the world. The first event involved, of all things, a friendly coworker. One day in the break room, that coworker pulled Kim aside and told her, in no uncertain terms, that she had an eye for photography and should pursue the practice as a career.

For most of her adult life, Kim worked in retail for one of the largest pharmacy store chains in the country. The job paid the bills and gave her a sliver of security, but it lacked the one thing The second event involved the Kim desired most: A means to company she worked for. The determine and pursue her passion. CEO made a huge announcement:

sweeping changes would take place across the organization, changes that would negatively impact retail-level employees like Kim. Most of her coworkers summed up the changes to “business as usual.” But Kim saw the reorganization as a sign… …a sign to put herself first and seek her passion. And that’s exactly what she did: Kim met that friend who suggested that she try photography for a photo shoot in a local park, the experience was incredible for Kim and she realized that this was it! This is something that she could do all day for hours and hours whether it was a financial gain or not. On October 1, 2015, Kim resigned from the job she held for the last two decades, grabbed her camera, lenses, and founded

Kimazing Photography. But as Kim would soon learn, building a successful photography business from the ground up is damn near impossible. It’s true: according to one study, 60% of photographers close their business within the first year. And there were many moments in which Kim was a hair’s width away from becoming part of that 60%. During that first crucial year, Kim tried her hand in event and family photography. But those categories were inundated with competitors to the point where even someone as talented as Kim found it hard to stand out. Unfortunately, this inability to make a name for herself translated into weeks — and sometimes months — without generating income. Soon enough, Kim was overwhelmed with fear, worry, self-doubt, and dread. She spent many sleepless nights tossing and turning, wondering if quitting her job was the biggest mistake of her life, until she received a fortuitous call from one of her very first branding clients, Becky A. Davis. Becky A. Davis is a leadership and life coach who had hired Kim to create the visual identity for her company’s marketing materials. Kim nailed it with Becky. Soon after, Becky called with an opportunity, one that involved Kim collaborating with the amazing Dr. Felicia Phillips. This was a big deal: Dr. Phillips was (and still is) an accomplished, world-renown business strategist. So, naturally, Kim jumped at the opportunity to collaborate with this remarkable woman of

color. After a few photography sessions with Dr. Phillips, Dr. Phillips began to book photo sessions with Kimazing for her clients. And, as the story goes, those sessions produced some of the most phenomenal business branding visuals so much so, Dr. Phillips said to Kim that “…Photographing women of color — that is your niche. That is your lane.” Suddenly, everything clicked. For years Kim harbored strong opinions about mainstream media’s failure to portray women of color in all their heavenly glory. It was an outright tragedy as far as she was concerned. So when Kim had the opportunity to photograph sisters, she made sure the camera captured the qualities she saw in them: the fierce intelligence, the supreme elegance, the unquestionable beauty… To Kim, Dr. Phillip’s didn’t just make sense — it made perfect sense. So much so that she wasted no time steering Kimazing in a new direction. In her second year in business, Kim focused exclusively on working with ambitious women of color. Fast forward eight years later: Kimazing Photography is thriving, and Kim is widely known as the go-to branding photographer for successful businesswomen of color. As Kim’s story demonstrates, God will always show you sign. It’s your duty to recognize and, more importantly, act upon them. Brandon Lawson PR

blown away by her vocal talent, poise and personality. He immediately added her to his highenergy “House Party Variety Show” and in 2012 and 2014 this dynamic duo performed for many sold out audiences at the 1,500-seat Superstar Theater in the world-famous Resorts Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. T-Fox was excited to have such a spiritual and humble talent match his passion, professionalism and charisma. In fact, he and the crowd were so impressed with Talein, T-Fox made her his Co-headliner in 2014! Showing an interest in the arts at an early age, Talein took ballet lessons at age 5, sang in school productions, competed in talent competitions and pageants, attended modeling schools, and received formal vocal training. As a teen, it was obvious that her passion for music dominated her dreams. She began writing and recording original material for a demo while performing solo or with a band at weddings, anniversaries, churches, conventions, school and community events, and private affairs. In 1992, Talein gave her life to the Lord but continued her lifestyle as a mainstream secular artist. Having grown up in the Motown, Disco, and Soul Train Eras, Talein was heavily influenced by the great artists and good music of those eras. Covering popular songs by Whitney Houston, Patti LaBelle, Celine Dion, Yolanda Adams, Teena Marie, Denice Williams, Mariah Carey, Stephanie Mills and many more is like breathing for her. She was laser focused on pursuing a professional career in the industry and began circulating her demo tape. Finally, her efforts paid off in1993 when Talein was selected to be the lead female vocalist for Atlantic Starr and recorded the CD, “Time” on Arista Records. She was blessed to work with award-winning songwriter, Diane Warren, one of the most prolific songwriters in the music industry. Diane has written hits for Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Toni Braxton to name a few. But after leaving the group Atlantic Starr in 1993, she felt depressed, despondent and broken. She decided it was the time to accept her call, follow Christ with her whole heart, and give her talents back to HIM. Seeking solace in her faith, she turned her attention and talent to gospel music, joining a few groups and doing local performances before

becoming a Praise and Worship Leader. However, Talein’s creative energy and versatility would not allow her to stop there. She wanted to praise Him and write about HIS goodness believing that meaningful lyrics touch the heart and soul of others. Meanwhile her Mom was writing poetry as a hobby. This inspired Talein to collaborate with her Mom, La-Tina Smith, to write and record her debut gospel masterpiece entitled, “Don’t Turn Your Back on God,” It was released on her independent label Angelic Vibe Music, Inc. in 2007. This 10song CD garnered Talein new fans throughout the U.S. and abroad, paving the way for her first international television debut performance on Candi Staton’s show, “Say Yes” which aired on Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN)--the largest Christian television network in the world. She has also been a guest performer on “Nite Line”, aired on station WGGS TV, home of Carolina Christian Broadcasting in Greenville, SC that reaches over 940,000 households; “Atlanta Live” on station WATC TV57 in Norcross, GA and Channel 7 News in Washington, D.C. Talein has received numerous awards in recognition of her talent, hard work, dedication and outstanding contributions throughout her lifetime. Her very first music award was the Youth Gospel Choice Awards Best Female Artist for 2008. She was given her most prestigious honor in 2017 when she received a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award signed by President Barack Obama for her life-long commitment to volunteer service. Talein released two singles that resonated with her fans. “Powerful Warrior” is the Anthem of 2019 and a song of empowerment. It encourages everyone to be warriors by using their spiritual weapons and faith in God to overcome life’s challenges. For this song, Talein received over 10 music nominations in 2019 and in 2020 she received 12 nominations. She won a Newsome Award for Contemporary Artist of the Year for 2019 and two Newsome Awards for Praise & Worship Artist for 2019 and 2020. Blazing a trail in 2021, was Talein’s new single, “Atmosphere,” which was written and arranged by Talein and produced by her son, chart-topping

Music Producer RXNEY. This angelic song of worship is one of Talein’s favorites, because it is their first Mother-Son Collaboration. It has widespread appeal and quickly reached #1 for 3 straight weeks in a row on the VSC Gospel Network’s United Praise Radio Show’s Top 25 songs that is syndicated on 23 plus stations. It also charted in Cashbox Magazine’s Black Gospel Top 50 for 7 months, entering the chart at #21 before topping the chart at #6. Also in 2021 Talein was nominated to receive awards in four music categories and won Graphic Designer of the Year for the first time. After many years of designing eye-catching CD jackets, bookcovers, flyers, commercial ads and various marketing materials for other creative artists, authors, and entrepreneurs, the recognition was well-deserved. Talein’s third single entitled, “Walls Down” was released in 2023. This soul-stirring contemporary rhythm and praise song was written by the dynamic Mother & Daughter duo, Tina & Talein and produced by Grammy-nominated Dennis “MLIK” Moore for 3HP Heavy Hittaz. “Walls Down” takes you on a journey of restoration and healing by allowing God to penetrate your walls to bring you to a place of wholeness and peace. It’s already moving its way up the charts and is current #23 on the United Praise Radio Show. Talein is married to her best friend and ministry partner, Apostle John F. Harris, and they Pastor Spirit of Glory Worship Center in Decatur, GA. They are also the parents of four beautiful adults and continue to utilize their marriage to be a blessing to others.

TH E H EA LT H RI SK O F U N FORG I VENE SS. UN FO RG I VENE SS. BY PAOLA TENNON, RN, BSN, MBA/HCA, CCM Forgiveness is extending mercy to those who have harmed us and it is a process that occurs over time, and for some, maybe even years. It is a pivotal issue in the Christian walk according to Charles Stanley, in his book “The Gift Of Forgiveness.” He asserts that forgiveness involves three elements: injury, a debt resulting from the injury, and a cancellation of the debt. He further states that forgiveness is “the act of setting someone free from an obligation to you that is a result of a wrong done against you.” And he implies that one needs to trace the sequence of the

28 | June 2023

event because most people who suffer from an unforgiving spirit do not know that unforgiveness is the root of their problem, (1). When I think about forgiveness, I am reminded of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who willingly took on the sins of the world for the forgiveness of our sins, thereby reconciling us back unto the heavenly Father and opening the door for us to receive God’s gift of Salvation. God’s gracious forgiveness of our sin should be our measure of grace for our forgiveness of others as commanded in Ephesians 4:32 NIV; “Be kind and compassionate

to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you,” (2). This scripture is essential for all who believe; for it is not a suggestion but a command. Therefore, we should consider the cost if we choose to forgive, or if we refuse to forgive because that is not reflective of a Christian life and it yields consequences. Nonetheless, the forgiveness that we extend towards others can often bring reconciliation to relationships. In contrast, the risk of unforgiveness can significantly impact our emotional, mental,

physical, and spiritual well-being but in negative ways. Research has identified a causal link between forgiveness and health utilizing both observational studies using longitudinal analyses and randomized trials of forgiveness interventions. While some research on the topics of unforgiveness and forgiveness may be limited, one study confirms that there are negative effects of unforgiveness on one’s mental health. According to M. E. McCullough (1998), unforgiveness triggers certain stressors that cause people to think that others have caused them harm, which can potentially lead them to taking drastic steps such as self-harm or suicidal tendencies, in extreme cases. Moreover, a research study on Chronic Stress Response (2000), concluded that when a person thinks that others can harm them, these negative emotions lead to chronic stress which can attribute to severe diseases such

as cardiovascular issues, and high blood pressure that can lead to brain hemorrhage, if not addressed, (6). Another study published April 2015 in the journal Annals of Behavioral Medicine including more than 330 people ages 16 to 79, found that regardless of age, those who were able to forgive, experienced a decrease in their perception of their own stress and this led to a decrease psychological distress. The study authors noted that “this model of forgiveness is one of the more effective responses for reducing stress perceptions and enhancing health.” They also identified 3 ways in which forgiveness is good for your health and they include: 1. Helps manage stress, 2. Activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which is good for the heart, and 3. Helps you ruminate less which can lower risks of psychological disorders, (10). Also included in this group of studies was a study ordinarypeoplemagazine | 29

published in October 2018 in the journal Neurology which found that people, especially women, who had high cortisol levels over extended periods of time had poorer memory and performed worst on cognitive test. This is important because the stress hormone Cortisol has several negative effects on systems throughout the body and can potentially affect memory. Furthermore, an article by Kaiser Permanente suggests that not forgiving someone often leads to hostility towards that person which keeps the levels of the stress hormone elevated in our bodies, which in turn triggers a wide range of negative outcomes, (9).

with improved psychological well-being, physical health outcomes, and longevity. It further states that forgiveness can serve as a protective factor that buffers against poor health and psychological consequences, (8).

How do we begin? We must first recognize that unforgiveness causes barriers of separation and destroys relationships. We all are guilty and have fallen into the sin of unforgiveness at one time or another; but we must realize that the sin of unforgiveness is self-destructive and poison to our souls, (5). It permeates our entire being and separates us from God, friends, family and etc. Jesus cautions about unforgiveness in Mark 11:25It only offers a lifetime of hurt that can never be 26 which states; “Whenever you stand praying, defended or justified, but it is something that must if you have anything against anyone, forgive be dealt with. When we forgive those who have him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive wronged us, their sin will never be made right and you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, all of the hurt, pain and anguish will likely remain, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your but only for a time. Isaiah tells us that God will not trespasses.” Further investigation suggests that hear our prayers when we have unforgiveness in long-term effects of chronic stress can give rise our life (Isaiah 59:1-2). Thus, it is crucial that we to psychological disorders such as depression, forgive in order to be released from the bondage anxiety, leading to anorexia or bulimia because of of unforgiveness; for only the power of the Holy unexpressed emotions. This was validated in the Spirit can give us the grace to truly forgive. The research study by E. L. Worthington and M. Scherer following information is gleaned from the annals (2004) which concluded that unforgiveness is a of the Mayo Clinic and it speaks to: Forgiveness: type of stress response that directly impacts the Letting Go of Grudges and Bitterness. https: // mental and psychological health of a person. Reflect on times when others have forgiven you. Write in a journal, pray, or talk with a spiritual leader, mental health provider, or an impartial loved one or friend. Be aware that forgiveness is a process. Even small hurts may need to be revisited. Understand that reconciliation may not be possible if the offender has died or is unable to communicate with you. Reconciliation might not be appropriate in some cases, but forgiveness is possible in all cases.

D E SCRIP TIONS OF THE ENEMY BY TAMMY TERRELL KENNARD Big lips, big eyes, big nose, pushed-back teeth, big head, big ears, bumpy face, knocked knees, flat booty, big chest Tammy who talked with a lisp… That’s what they called me, and eventually, it’s how I saw myself. I was the ugly girl of all my friends, according to the boys and the girls. So, I became the cool girl and the bulimic girl. I started throwing up

after meals because one of the neighborhood adults thought it was necessary to point out how even though I was small, I was still the largest one in my circle of friends. So I started throwing up to keep from becoming a fat girl also. I became the girl who could rap better than all the boys, and I learned how to check. (Checking is kind of like your momma jokes. It’s when you

jive talk about another person). I was good at checking because I’d go low below the belt. There weren’t any limits as to what I’d talk about if you hurt me. I’d talk about you, your momma, daddy, siblings, or even deceased grandparents if you messed with me. I played really dirty. I mean, I had to make folks leave me alone and stop picking on me. My big brother couldn’t defend

me anymore. He was graduating, so I was determined to protect myself, and checking was my answer. It worked, too. It got folks off my back.

He was a good guy, it seemed. That thought of him didn’t last long. Raised by parents who didn’t kick their kids out as soon as they turned 18 but determined to be grown and on my own, I moved out at 19 to shack with a man I eventually married. Nothing fancy, just a quick “I do” in the pastor’s living room with no one but us, the pastor, my sister, and her husband. I don’t even think the Holy Spirit attended that ceremony.

You would have thought my confidence would have been top-tier because I was one of the few families in our Smokey City neighborhood that still had two parents in the home. My daddy worked hard as a welder plus a truck driver, and my mom stayed home caring for us and the house. Times were much different back then. “Descriptions of the enemy inside are what filled the bag I carried. That’s what defined me, and that’s what I believed.”

So, I decided on cosmetology school. Knowing good and well, I had zero desire to do hair. Now, I was definitely born for the beauty industry, but becoming a manicurist was my natural gift. I discovered that by doing more nails than hair in hair school (that’s still funny to me). During this time, I was 19 years old, and this was also when I met who I thought was my person.

34 | June 2023

The only thing missing was a baby. Especially since all my friends who weren’t married already had kids because they’d gotten pregnant in high school. I was jealous. I wanted a baby, so we started trying. But miscarriage after miscarriage became the new definition of me. Big lip, big nose, big eyes, pushed-back teeth Tammy who couldn’t even carry a baby full term before it died.

With people constantly asking “When are you going to give that man a baby?” insecurities attached itself to me even more. But I painted a smile on my face as if I had it all together. Outside appearances often tell lies, and I was the face of it. Descriptions of the enemy inside are what filled the bag I carried. That’s what defined me, and that’s what I believed. You’d think with all the negative labels Satan had attached to me that it wasn’t room for any more, but that wasn’t the case for me. That cunning little sneaky, evil, and nasty beast added another description to my already list of heartbreaking labels. Our marriage didn’t stay happy very long because, for one, it wasn’t built on the foundation of GOD. He was a follower (and not of CHRIST). He was an alcoholic and a cheater. Dealing with all of that, I became physically abusive towards him. Yep, you got it. I was the one putting my hands on him. I remember one time I stabbed him in the face with a piece of glass just for hanging a picture wrong, and it fell off the wall breaking. I was angry because I thought I finally had someone who liked me and accepted all my flaws, yet he cheated over and over again. I was so hurt, and I wanted to hurt him just like he and everyone else had hurt me. The blood was pouring down his face from where I’d stabbed him with the glass. He called my daddy, and my daddy came up the street to our house. When he walked in, I fell into my daddy’s chest, crying. “He made me do it.” Before asking was he okay, my daddy asked him what he did to me. My daddy loved me, and he wasn’t going to accept anyone doing me wrong or accept anything anyone said negatively about his baby girl. I was a perfect angel in his eyes. He saw me as his beautiful girl, and I grew up with him always telling me how beautiful I was, how smart I was, and how the world was mine if I’d just go get it.

With a good daddy, you’re probably wondering how I could ever have low-self-esteem or even allow what others thought of me to affect me. But Satan spoke to the young and spoke through the young. So, as a teenage girl, when you’re at that age where boys are starting to like girls, you’re the only one no one likes, and then they verbally remind you why they don’t like you, and it’s all physical, it makes you repeat the descriptions from your peers. Big lip Tammy, big nose Tammy, big ears Tammy, pushed back teeth Tammy, knocked knees Tammy, flat booty, big chest Tammy, bumpy face Tammy, Tammy with the big head who talks with a lisp. As I said earlier, you would have thought, with all the negative labels already attached to me, that it wasn’t anything else he could say to bother me but Satan’s plots, plans, and schemes to attack my mind and my life was running rampant. After only five years of marriage, trying to beat some sense into someone who was an uncontrollable alcoholic and habitual cheater, divorce found its way to my address. I’m sure by now you’re already calling me the names everyone else did. Big lip, big eyes, big nose, pushed back teeth, knocked knees, abusive, miscarriage having, divorced Tammy who talked with a lisp. Descriptions of the enemy had their way with me, and Satan wasn’t going to give up until those labels ended with me committing suicide. To Be Continued: Scripture: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

TO G IVE OR N OT TO GI VE :

THAT IS THE QUE STION! BY VANDERBILT BRABSON III, AUTHOR A story is told about two men being marooned on an Island. One man paced back and forth worried and scared while the other man sat back and was sunning himself. The first man said to the second man, “Aren’t you afraid we are about to die.” “No,” said the second man, “I make $10,000 weekly and tithe faithfully to my church every week. It’s Stewardship Month at my church. My Pastor will find me.” When I first became a Christian, I was a single young man at the age twenty-eight. I immediately sought to find a church to join. Therefore, seeking God’s guidance, I started visiting different churches. Eventually, I felt led to join a small

38 | June 2023

Baptist Church that a good friend and former roommate and high school and college classmate of mine already was attending. Even better, this Baptist church was only a 20–25-minute drive from my home. I felt blessed to be a part of that body of believers. Everyone was so welcoming. However, I had not been a member that long when I began to feel somewhat uncomfortable due to repeated pulpit messages, among other biblical doctrine, regarding our obligation as Christians to tithe. To me at least, it seemed to be mentioned quite frequently. Perhaps I was overly sensitive to that particular subject because as a new believer I was not a

tither. The scripture quoted each time was Malachi 3:8: which reads: Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. To be sure, I thought to myself, I would gladly love to tithe; however, between all my living expenses: housing, utilities, groceries, gas, parking fees at my job, vehicle maintenance, and not to mention literally living from pay-day to pay-day, I told myself I just could not see how I could commit to tithing immediately nor in the very near foreseeable future. Heck, I said to myself, I was single and could barely afford to date from time to time. Not to mention, I definitely could not afford to eat out; therefore, I packed my own lunch every day for work. However, in spite of those barriers or excuses to my putting God first in my finances, my conscience or the Holy Spirit, or both, began to seriously bother me about the matter.

Shortly thereafter, one evening after work I telephoned my pastor and asked him to meet with me at the church. He agreed. That very evening the two of us did meet. I told my pastor how much money I made from my employer as well as what my financial obligations were. I told him I truly wanted to tithe but didn’t think I was able to…at least not in the near future. He lovingly took the time and showed me some scriptures and told me that as a Christian, I needed to trust God and put Him first in every area of my life—including my finances. After seeing and reading the pertinent scriptures and listening to his biblical answers to my questions, I was convinced. He encouraged me to trust God, and let God work it out. I immediately told him that I didn’t know how I was going to be able to do it, but I was committed to start right then and there. Therefore, I offered to write him a check for my tithes right there as the two of us were ending our meeting at the church. He smiled and said, “Why don’t you just wait until ordinarypeoplemagazine | 39

Sunday when the offering is lifted.” Since that time, I have learnt some really valuable lessons (none original with me) regarding generosity toward others, and regarding we as Christians faithfully giving to the church in obedience to the scriptures. Jesus said in Matthew 6:2:

Remember, Jesus said in Luke 6:38: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

Let’s be honest. As Christians we all welcome and hope for genuine blessings in our lives. Inspirational Words

GOD’S EVERL ASTING PRE SENCE PSALMS 139 (KJV) O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
