Established in 1989, the much-lauded Golden Unicorn Restaurant pioneered the neighborhood’s first upscale Cantonese - style dining restaurant. With its trademark elegant yet traditional red-and-gold decor, attentive service, and detectable cuisine, the restaurant has become an established choice for casual family dining, weddings, and corporate events alike. Over the years, such commitment to quality service and food has awarded the Golden Unicorn Restaurant with many accolades. In 1996, it was named by Food and Wine Magazine as one of NYC’S Five Best Restaurants, making it the only Chinese restaurant to have been designated this distinction.

Editor in chief Le Quan
ANGIE VU HA - ASIA HOTTEST DJ
Editorial Board Chairman: Le Quan Production Director David Prusko Le Quan / President
FROM THE Editor VNB MAGAZINE Le Quan is the creative director and photographer for VNB Magazine. He is also a visionary and a dreamer. What once seemed impossible and out of reach has now become day-to-day life for Le Quan. I was so moved and intrigued by Le Quan during our meeting in Brooklyn, NY. He hasn’t had the easiest life, which makes his story all the more inspiring. He moved to the US from Vietnam with nothing to his name. At one of his lowest points, he was living out of a phone booth. A strong work ethic and relentless pursuit of his dreams led him to where he is today. The publication is an Asian glamour magazine devoted to new beauty and design. I like to think of it as a platform for fresh faces and new designers to showcase their talent. The concept in and of itself is quite charitable. Le Quan’s rough beginnings not only shaped his character but also set to tone for his career goals. Having worked as a photographer for several years, he was always in contact with talent that he felt was flying under the radar. He wanted to create an outlet for these undiscovered stars. Experiencing difficulty finding a job after completing graphic design school, he learned that didn’t want to rely on anyone for employment. Instead he wanted to be a position where he could do the hiring, specifically for his magazine. It’s with that give-back attitude the VNB Magazine was born. Le Quan shoots all the images found in his magazine and also features work from fellow photographers seeking exposure. If you’re an aspiring designer or model hoping to get your image or work out there, let Le Quan know. He’s ready to help. While you’re at it, help him out by spreading the word about his magazine.

PROFILE
Everlyn Ho with NY Chinese Beauty Pageant winners and Eric Yuen, William, Jason Kong
INTERVIEW WITH MISS NY CHINESE BEAUTY PAGEANT PRESIDENT
EVERLYN HO
For our VNB fans it’s hard to not remember who Everlyn Ho is, She has done amazing makeup for almost all our VNB girls and also she is the president of Beauty Rite, Inc., owner of La Peau Day Spa, senior beauty educator, professional modeling artist, and has also created an internationally recognized makeup product line, makeuprite™. Even though she is an extremely successful business woman, the beauty maven has worked as the makeup and stylist consultant for the Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant for the past thirteen years leveraging her professional acumen in skincare and makeup to train contestants to get the very best out of every look. The media and all of the contestants have nicknamed Everlyn “the beauty queen behind the beauties” for her great work on the pageant. Beauty queen is right because she still looks as young and beautiful as when she first started with the pageant; it seems that time has left no marks on Everlyn at all. As for the Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant, it has been one of the largest East Coast pageants in scale, in fairness, and in influence. Everlyn has challenged all Chinese-American girls who meet the qualifications for the pageant to audition because this is a rare and wonderful opportunity to showcase their talent alongside their cultural pride, family values, and the confidence to succeed in a culturally blended society. Every year, the top 14 finalists have toured China for two weeks in August as an act of goodwill, taking part in several television programs.
WW W.V NBMAG AZINE .C OM
22
These opportunities not only give the girls a chance to be seen by over 8 billion viewers but also the rare chance for them to take an active role in discovering their cultural heritage. The pageant has offered each contestant the opportunity to grow, to become more confident as a woman, and to become aware of not just her little world but on a more global level. Every year, the finalists have gone through vigorous training, from how to accentuate their features through makeup to how to comport themselves while in an interview or on a catwalk. For the first time in the pageant’s history, this past pageant’s finalists had a wonderful opportunity through the NY Film Academy to take a free acting class. In addition to the classes and training, the finalists have also gained a new family. With each event, each challenge, and each win, the finalists became sisters looking out for one another. Though Everlyn will be the first female president that the Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant has had in its 13-year history, this will not be the focus of her leadership. Her goal has remained the same as her predecessors: to improve the quality of the organization, the contestants, and the overall production year over year. When I asked her how she felt being selected this year to be president, she could not stress more how honored she felt that the board selected her to preside over this next
term. She hoped that she would do the organization proud by raising the bar for next year’s program and contestants. Her winning personality, charisma, and creativity proved to be invaluable to the team. The Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant is one of the largest in scale, fairest and most influential beauty pageants on the East Coast. Everlyn would like to encourage all the qualified Chinese American girls to attend this pageant because this is the rare opportunity to show their virtues with cultural pride, leadership, family values and confidence to succeed in a culture-blended society. Every year the pageant girls will go to China for half a month on August to attend the different TV programs, which not only give the girls opportunity to face over 8 billion audience but also the rare chance for them to chase down their cultural heritage.
Previous presidents have stepped down, but they have always stayed with the organization, helping in any way they can. Why? Because they have all possessed and continue to possess the passion to give young Chinese-American women the opportunities to advance themselves, network, see the world, and learn new skills that will serve them their entire lifetimes. The requirements have always been stringent, and Everlyn has planned on continuing to raise that bar for the contestants. Nearly all of the participants have been fluent in at least one dialect of Chinese in addition to English. In recent years, all of the finalists have earned college degrees or were still attending college at the time of the competition. Many of the finalists, no matter whether they have placed in the top three or not, have gone on to pursue widely varying careers – from corporate executives to top models, from careers in the medical profession to television presenters.
When asked what her long term goals were for the pageant, Everlyn chuckled and only offered this: give her time to get used to her new responsibilities and that her hope would be to uphold the high quality and standards and maybe even raise expectations for the next pageant. Q&A 1. Please tell us about yourself? I model, DJ, and produce music. I now focus on DJing internationally, and feeling the energy from the crowd is probably the best feelings in the world. I produced 3 singles; Cream, Cookies, and Cyber Sex. Check me out on Beatport and SoundCloud. I am also a chief as well. 2. .How does it feel to be the hottest Asia DJ? These hot, sexy, sex bomb tittles are all from media. I don’t really notice or feel the difference. I’m still who I am, pretty down to earth and simple. I’m happy that people think I’m attractive though. 3. What make you choose to be DJ besides modeling, since you are very a successful model? I got introduced to electronic dance music when I moved to Singapore for modeling few years back. I totally felt in love and told myself I got to become a DJ. It took me a few years keep on talking about it until 2011. I realize I had to do it now or it would never happen. Modeling, you are just a mannequin. Being a DJ/producer, I can express myself as a personality, an artist. I’m totally free and be creative. 4. What make you choose VNB magazine beside other magazine to be featured? I met and talked to Mr Le Quan, the owner of VNB. He’s such a young aspiring entrepreneur with lots of will and determination. I learned that he’s publishing the only glamour magazine for Asian community here in NYC. VNB is such a great publication with beautiful models and interesting contents. I wanted to support him and especially Vietnamese in media, entertainment industry here. 5. What do you like about VNB magazine? I like VNB magazine because of the people and features in the magazine. It serves me well and also as my inspiration to do good and be successful like them. 6. Who is your favorite model? Kate Moss. She is an idol in this business for every model. She has inspired me throughout the years

7. Who are your biggest fashion & musical influences? Kate Moss for casual, effortless but sexy style and Chuckie for his amazing Dirty Dutch tunes. 9. Did you feel nervous for being the first time model? Quite nervous at first, but then I got really into it and got very comfortable as the shoot progressed. I enjoyed it very much, and I felt like a star. 10. Would you say you are pretty comfortable with your body? Yes, I love my body and how I look. I love both my strengths and my weaknesses.
11. What do you do differently to set yourself apart from other models? Being myself. Are we all different? I think besides being beautiful and have a standard model figure like all the models are, just BE WHO YOU ARE. Your personality and professionalism stands out. of myself. 10.With more than 500,000 fans around the world, what is the good side and bad side for being famous on the social media? No bad side. I love my fans and thanks to social media that I have a chance to share my everyday life and interact closely to them. They always give me big support and without my beloved fan, which I call them angels, there wouldn’t be me. 11. Have you ever searched your name online? Never. 12. What is your daily schedule like? First thing when I wake up, I would call a dozen of people to see how’s everything going: My manager, my family, my staff and friends, my business partners. Then I spend a lot of time in studio to work on my music. That’s the happiest time of my day. I may spend a couple of hours to work out or lounging around to watch movie, surfing the internet. I’m a homie person so I like to stay home to cook and chill. I already party when I work as a DJ so I only go to clubs sometimes in my available weekend to catch up with my friends or dance. 13. How do you maintain beauty? I allowed myself to eat anything I want since I turned DJ instead of strict diet like when I was modeling. I’m extremely happy about it; I think a little bit of curves is sexier. I don’t forget to drink a lot of water, putting sun cream in daytime and moisturizer every night. 14. What is the coolest thing a fan has ever done for you? One of my male fans got a tattoo of me on his bicep! It was hilarious but flattering. 15. What is your dating philosophy? Don’t date impulsively! Keep it fun and simple and casual at first and have reasonable expectations. Date funny guys! :) 16. What is your sexting etiquette? Have fun with it for sure! Everyone likes a little sexy texting now and then. Keep it cool, keep it super sexy and use your imagination. 17. How many kids in highschool have asked you out? When I was in highschool, I got asked out everyday, but I had a hard time dealing with boys, it just became annoying! But now that I’m a woman, the more men that like me, the better! 14. Do you have any advice to give to new coming model? Love one another, be kind and be sexy! That’s how I live my life. Share pleasure and beauty with as many people as possible!

Q&A 1. Please tell us about yourself? Well I’m just a geek. Believe it or not I graduated with an engineering degree, so yes I can troubleshoot your computer :) The things that I truly love to do is draw and paint, I don’t get much spare time but when I do that’s what helps me get away from everything. I’m in a whole new world when I’m drawing or painting. 2. What make you choose VNB magazine beside other magazine to be featured? You chose me! ;) Either way I am very happy to have met such a great entrepreneur like yourself and I am flattered to be featured in your magazine. Also humbled by the experience and opportunities the magazine has given me. 3. What do you like about VNB magazine? VNB magazine brings out the beauty and culture in our society with also adding in a touch of sexiness. Also who doesn’t want to flip through a magazine and see all of these gorgeous women! 4. What make you choose modeling beside other career? I truly enjoyed it when I was younger and the more I did it the more I only saw myself doing that and nothing else. It allows me to get out and express myself. Also I get to meet some incredible talented people who share the same passion. Although it is a demanding profession, both physically and mentally, I am always up for a challenge. I get this rush that takes over my body before a show or a shoot, it’s hard to put into words. I just know its one of the best feelings. 5. Who is your favorite model? That’s a hard question. I admire many talented models. One of them in particular did catch my attention when I saw a documentary of Victoria’s Secret a really long time ago. You probably already guessed it, Adriana Lima. Her personality and her beauty out shined all the other girls and I admired her for her confidence. She stood strong in her values and didn’t care about what others thought of her. She also never allowed anyone to push her into anything that made her look like a pornstar or do something crazy to produce a publicity stunt. She respects her family and I love that she keeps them first. I also admire that she does more than just modeling, she does other things in her life like acting and charitable work. I wanted to be her for goodness sakes! 6. How did it feel when you first got signed? Amazing. 7. Did you feel nervous for being the first time model? Not necessarily nervous. More like excited. 8. Have you ever searched your name online? Yes I have. It started with searching for the flower that was named after me and well curiosity made me see what came up for me. All I has to do was switch the “F” to “PH”. I thought it was fun and at the same time super weird. I can’t look at myself for more than 2 seconds without making fun of myself.
WW W.V NBMAG AZINE .C OM

9. What is your daily schedule like? No rest that’s for sure. I try to get in at least 4 to 5 workouts in the week. Usually I am busy with jobs and castings from super early in the morning throughout the week. A lot of networking is also done at events that I attend to. Currently I have expanded into acting and keeping busy with that too. I love it! Running around NYC is loads of fun, I usually don’t get home sometimes until 11pm.
11. How do you maintain beauty?
Natural beauty can be maintained easily. Just listen to mom, most of what I do came from her. Skin is important to me, staying out of the sun, avoid chemically based harsh cleansers; drink lots of water, and DON’T SMOKE! I’m pretty simple when it comes beauty, my definition of beauty may not be the same as others. I define beauty with health not sex. Beauty comes from within, literally, if you take care of your body with what you put in it, it will show on the outside.

But Paul is quite low-key. The list of people he probably can only speculate over the actress name Bliss Ellis, Jasmine Pilchart-Gosnell, Genenis Rodriguez. But, consequential period of his youth was elated Rebecca McBrain. Love’s superficiality with the result that he had children early, when only 25 years old. Either he was not ready to get married: “My heart wants to stay next to her daughter but does not allow rational”. Fortunately, a few years later, her 15-year-old daughter Meadow Walker has moved in permanently with his father Paul and Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell, Paul 17-year-old lover less. 15-year-old girl and 40-year-old father were very well together. HUANG PIN YUAN CONCERT AT RESORT WORLD CASINO Most Chinese singers hold their concerts in Mohegan Sun, CT, but this time Huang Pin Yuan will be holding it at the fairly new Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, NY. Hunag Pin Yuan is a Taiwanese singer, and it is his second time holding a concert in the East Coast. Even though he just landed in NY at noon, he rushed over for his concert’s press conference. He did not seem fazed at all by the time difference, and was quite humorous and attentive to all questions being asked. According to Huang, they were looking for an idol singer to hold a concert in NYC, and upon being asked he happily accepted the invitation. When the man behind the production came up for photographs, his co-worker said he loves Huang’s songs and sings it all the time. Hinting what a big fan he was, it was mainly him that helped made this possible. Although the location is different than last time’s, it is still a casino, so the production and song selections are geared towards a casino venue’s style. Due to the casino’s regulations, the concert can only run for an hour and a half, which is roughly 12 songs. A news reporter told him to prepare more songs for encore, he just smiles and said he will see the day of. There will also be two other singers joining him on stage.

He talked about combining his guitar skills with his singing because not many Taiwanese singers does that, but he’s good at it so he wants to share it. When asked about outfit changes, as most singers love to do extravagant concert costumes (and multiple ones!), he joked “If you’re here to see me change clothes, this isn’t the show for it.” He wants it to be more focused on his songs rather than costumes. Not only does he sing and play guitar, he writes songs as well. He told us that he is currently writing songs for his friends, specifically one for a friend who is getting married. The concert runs for two time slots, November 27, 2013 10PM and November 28, 2013 5PM. Noticing that one day falls on Thanksgiving, he admits that Taiwanese does not have a tradition of celebrating it. However, he knows it is a big celebration for Americans, and how it is a special day for him. Therefore he hopes to bring the feeling of thankfulness to the concert and all his fans that attends.

Yesterday I assisted my event photographer friend, Peshean, at the 4th Annual New York Chinese Film Festival red carpet and screening of So Young. It was my first time attending a Chinese film festival. I had a lot of fun, especially getting to see actors and actresses I have watched behind the screen when I was young. The red carpet was so hectic as all the fans swarmed around the perimeter of the red carpet. No press pass or volunteer (spelled valunteer that day :P) pass? No way of getting a good shot of any of the celebrities and board members. Finally over, everyone was escorted into the auditorium, where the fun part begins. Like all other film festivals, the Arts Council board members and other important figures greeted us with a speech. Afterwards, all the actors, actresses and directors were invited up to speak to us. And the new director but a childhood actress of mine, Vicki Zhao (Zhao Wei). I grew up watching her in Princess Pearl 還珠格格. It was amazing to see her in person and watch her first director debut together! The movie she directed for the first time is titled So Young, set in the 80s she apologized to viewers if they are shocked upon the opening of film of how old and dirty China looked. She assured that’s not the case now. The first half of the film was about how the main characters meet in college (though for some reason their antics, language, behavior reminded me more of my high school life) and their promise to forever youth. It certainly brought a lot of laughter as the characters were really full of life and color, especially the main character Zhang Wei (whom Zhao Wei was supposed to act as but instead chose to direct, good thinking!). It also brought a lot of reminiscence as you watch her try to capture the attention of Chen Xiaozheng (Mark Zhao). Leading to a heartbreak that had us girls tearing as it reminded of us our past heartbreaks.
After the tear jerking moment, the mood of the movie swung 180 degrees. You can see the modernization of China, as well as the development of all the characters. The change in the color tone of the film helped showcase this change (from a more warm yellow-ish tone in the beginning, which did help make it look older, to a more cold blue-ish tone also symbolizing the now serious. They lost the childish behaviors as they face reality. Won’t say anymore to give anything away, but there were so many twists that made us gasp, angry, laugh and cry. This movie really puts you through all the emotions. Vicki Zhao did a really good job as a first time director. Some shots are so vivid and memorable in my mind; Ruan Guan crying in the train shot was so well done, as well as the scene where Zhang Wei confrots Xiaozheng in the bathroom. Both are very depressing scenes, I promise I’m not that much of a pessimist... They were just scenes that conveyed the most and strongest emotions in the movie. I had a great time watching the film as well as photographing the event! I learned camera settings is so important during an event, I really have to learn it!!! Also, I feel bad that the lighting casted weird shadows on their faces so if you don’t catch the right angle, they loose their neck :( I felt bad most of them had jet lag so didn’t appear too cheerful, but did manage to capture their smiles and gratitude for attending. Hope to join again next year!
