AP Scores VMS students passed more than 90% of their AP Exams in 2016-17, which is the highest percentage in recent years. We added AP Studio Art in 2016-17, which yielded the image below, inspired by the work of da Vinci. This year’s AP courses include 13 offerings with the addition of AP Computer Science and AP Music Theory.

Working in partnership with the Vail Valley Salvation Army, each hombase contributed gifts, clothing, and household necessities based on wishlists from local families in need of a helping hand. Cross-age groups of students delivered several busloads of gifts the week before winter break to 31 individuals in 9 local families through our 2016 Adopt-aFamily program. Peter Mitchell
Alumni
After School Academy As a part of the school’s Strategic Plan, VMS piloted an After School Academy last year with enrichment opportunities for students in all grades that ranged from knitting to robotics. The courses piqued the interest of our young learners, but served equally as a venue for teachers to share passions that lie outside of the subjects they normally teach. Financially, the program was also a success, generating more than $20,000 in new revenue and providing meaningful opportunities for faculty to earn additional income.
A board committee has been formed to work on engaging alumni through events and opportunities for them to share their expertise with current students. Seen in the photo below, Willy Fair ’13 visited campus to lead an animation workshop for middle school students during a conference day. Last January, a group of young alumni also shared their insights about the transition to college through a roundtable discussion with the teachers and administrators. It led to the development of the new upper school Personal Growth Program and the semesterlong Senior Seminar for 12th graders.

Class Camping Trips
Athletics VMS expanded offerings in the upper school, adding a girls’ basketball program and transitioning girls’ golf from a club to a CHSAA sanctioned sport. Boys’ lacrosse beat local powerhouse Battle Mountain in a dramatic upset and won its first league title in VMS history. Boys’ basketball played its first full varsity schedule, closing out the season with a postseason appearance that was also an unprecedented accomplishment. And, both the boys’ and girls’ skiing programs took home state championships.
Three years ago, 11th graders took an overnight camping trip to Sweetwater to reflect on their identity as class and the role they would play as leaders of the school the following year. Using nature as a muse and their study of Transcendentalism in English as a departure point, students and faculty took part in activities ranging from creating balanced rock sculptures to writing personal mission statements. The trip was a success and has evolved to become a fixture of the 11th grade experience. It also spawned a similar outdoor education trip for 9th graders held this fall, designed to build community and welcome the 14 new students joining their class.
Faculty VMS employs 72 full-time faculty and staff, and the relationships they forge with our students are the lifeblood of our school. We’ve added two new positions this year—a Computer Science Teacher and a MakerSpace Coordinator, while maintaining the full-time count at 72 through careful consolidation and reallocation of resources from administration to classrooms. Retention remains at a very high level and the jobs that do become available often draw hundreds of well-qualified applicants.

B.A.S.E. Program Young VMS alumni have shared that, while they felt academically prepared for college, they faced a steep learning curve in some areas outside the classroom. Suggestions ranged from adding more sex education and technology classes to teaching students how to manage their finances, complete a job application, and change a tire. As a result, upper school began its BASE program for 9th graders last year that included a quarter each of sex ed, technology and society, and ethics. This year, it has evolved into the Personal Growth classes taken by all upper school students.
Interest in VMS has reached an all-time high with solid wait pools in several grades. Admission inquiries came from across the country and around the globe. This year, we welcomed 78 new students after graduating our largest class ever of 43 students. Our community includes families spread across two counties, bookended by Gypsum to the west and Breckenridge to the east. We also have several international guest students from Europe and Asia who continue to add to the diversity of perspectives represented in our community.
Gala & Auction The VMS Gala began in the 1960s out of a need to make payroll and has since evolved into a grand tradition that raises nearly half of the school’s budgeted fundraising in one night. The 2016 Gala and Auction raised $756,764, thanks in large part to inspired bidding in the Paddle Raise that added more than $245,000 to the Taft Conlin Scholarship endowment and need-based tuition assistance.

Garage Sale
Love & Logic
The school’s Annual Garage Sale celebrated its 25th anniversary and raised more than $24,000 to benefit the VMS community and help support Parent Partners projects. The event’s success is a result of the countless parent volunteer hours that go into acquiring and organizing thousands of items that fill the school’s gym and draw crowds from near and far.
In advance of the 2016-17 school year, VMS sent a group of teachers to a three-day workshop to build expertise in Love and Logic. Kindergarten teachers Carson Blumenreich and Jess Szmyd then hosted a six-part seminar for parents and a nine-part, in-house professional development for teachers. Love and Logic is a framework for teaching and parenting that supports children as they develop an understanding that “the quality of their lives depends on the quality of their choices” (logic), and that “limits should be set and enforced in a sincere, compassionate and empathetic manner” (love). Using this approach supports development of personal responsibility, self-control, and ultimately, good decision making skills.
Intraterm What started as a program for 10th graders is now flourishing as an opportunity for all upper school students to deepen knowledge and cultivate new passions. Among the 15 different one-week Intraterm offerings, VMS students experienced language immersion in Costa Rica, conducted marine biology research on an island sanctuary in Mexico, and explored the culture of New Orleans while working to help revegetate areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Locally, others explored engineering, snow safety, and the chemistry of flavor and fragrance.
House Program
Orientation Trips
During 2016-17, VMS introduced a House program that was designed to scale the magic of cross-age learning to a school-wide, year-long program. It continues this year with Houses comprised of students from each grade that meet once per 6-day rotation. The House groupings extend to traditions like the Gift Exchange, All-School Ski Day, and Field Day, further enriching these experiences.
Mutual respect and trust are essential ingredients to the rapport that exists in the VMS community. Orientation trips into the nearby backcountry have been a part of the VMS experience since its inception and serve both as a means to welcome new students and to create the powerful bonds that are the foundation of a VMS education. Middle school students challenged themselves and contemplated goals for the year through hikes, ropes courses, rock climbing, and rafting. Upper schoolers explored Canyonlands in canoes, hiked through snow in August on high mountain passes, and rafted Westwater’s class IV rapids, plus many more adventures.
Learning Common With generous gifts of more than $900,000, our library has been repurposed into a vibrant Learning Common that includes a core collection of books, as well as much-needed space for individual study and small-group collaboration. This revitalized space has once again become a hub for our community, which was the original intent of its placement at the center of the school. The truest measure of the success of the project can be found in the fact that it is constantly filled with students and faculty.

Professional Development Faculty and staff dedicated significant time to professional development ranging from in-house training with consultants to conferences on topics such as diversity and gender identity, institutional advancement, assistive technology, sex education, and book making. Others attended specialized training like the Lucy Calkins workshop at Columbia University, the Klingenstein Summer Institute, and a course at Harvard to support our new AP offering in Computer Science.
SSCV Partnership VMS is proud of its continued partnership with Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, which is considered to be one of the best such clubs in the world. As a result, VMS students have access to top-notch training and academics without compromise to either. In 2016-17, 62 students in grades 4-12 took part in our full-time tutorial program that provides support outside of normal class time and includes summer courses that allow students to complete academic work in advance of the busy winter competition season. VMS-SSCV graduates are currently skiing for distinguished college programs like Harvard, Dartmouth, Bates, Colby, Williams, and DU.
Outdoor Education VMS fielded 34 outdoor excursions during 2016-17 including fall and winter hut trips, orientation outings, and the 11th grade retreat to Sweetwater. Over the past year, the school has invested in safety enhancements like GPS mapping and satellite communication devices, and funded Wilderness First Responder medical training for faculty. 17 of our faculty and staff, roughly 25%, hold this advanced certification.
Service Learning Throughout the year and in all divisions, students learned the importance of gratitude and giving back through service learning projects. This past year, students and faculty prepared meals at soup kitchens, helped restore the Minturn Ranger Station sign, serenaded senior citizens, collected food for the Salvation Army, helped build homes with Habitat for Humanity, and served as stewards of the nearby Booth Falls Trail in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service. In total, our community’s efforts touched the lives of thousands between Denver and Dotsero in partnership with more than 20 different organizations.
Parent Partners
State Champions
Building community is at the core of Parent Partners’ mission. They provide the volunteer backbone for the school’s fundraising events like the Book Fair, Gala, and Garage Sale—all of which were huge successes this past year. But equally important, our Parent Partners serve as ambassadors for new families and organize social events to build community, like bowling and bingo as well as parent ski days and hikes, and coffee talks.
VMS earned not one, but two state championships in skiing, taking both the boys and girls combined titles in Nordic and alpine. Where ski racing is often an individual sport, Colorado high school skiing is organized as a team sport with each athlete in each discipline contributing to a combined effort. As this approach supports our core value of community, we are exceptionally proud of the distinction of these victories.

Student Support Services
Tuition Assistance
20% of our students benefit from the school’s Student Support Services. To meet the needs of our diverse learners, the department added a third full-time position during 2016-17 and invested in assistive technology and professional development to learn best practices in this area. Assistive technology includes dictation applications, as well as powerful screen readers that can “speak,” translate, or convert text into simpler language accessible to younger students. SSS faculty have also supported teachers in implementing Universal Design for Learning in their lessons, which removes instructional or environmental barriers to course content and the demonstration of new skills.
25% of our families received tuition assistance in 2016-17 amounting to almost $1.2 million. Throughout our 55 year history, tuition assistance has played a vital role in opening doors for local families and adding to the diversity of perspectives found in our community.
Taft Conlin Scholarship Now in its fifth year, the first recipient of the Taft Conlin Scholarship, Kevin Garcia, is thriving at Williams College. He is followed by two students currently enrolled in our upper school. True to the intention of this merit-based scholarship, all three have taken full advantage of the opportunities presented and have led by example thus raising the bar for all VMS students.
SummerQuest
Visual Arts
For 23 years, SummerQuest has been bringing students from local public middle schools to VMS for the month of July. The program provides a mix of academic skill development coupled with service learning and outdoor education experiences. SummerQuest is also an opportunity for VMS students interested in education and aspiring teachers to gain valuable classroom experience. This year, SummerQuest got a boost from Colorado’s El Pomar Foundation. A $25,000 grant is being used to extend programming beyond summer months and stay connected to the students in between sessions during the school year.
From Kindergarten Kandinskys to the 12th Century Japanese Suminagashi technique seen below, artwork filled the halls of the school, reminding us throughout the year of the talent that lies in each of our students. Through Day of the Arts, faculty, outside artists, and parent volunteers shared their creative energy with our community through workshops and performances.
Theatre Students in grades 3-12 portrayed hundreds of roles in four productions with opportunities for both first-timers and the most seasoned theatre and dance majors. The theatre department also made investments in key technical state-of-the-art lighting and sound upgrades totalling $55,000. Lower school shared life lessons learned through children’s classic literature like Walter the Farting Dog. Middle schoolers celebrated the work of John Hughes in an amalgamation of his most memorable characters and the struggles of teenage life. Up the Down Staircase highlighted an idealistic educator in the 1960s swimming against a tide of neglect, and Rock of Ages had audiences singing aloud to 1980s hair band anthems.

MakerSpace A guiding principle behind the Maker Movement is to work with what is available, adapting and repurposing otherwise intended objects and materials to suit the needs of the task at hand. Over the summer, the VMS technology and facilities staff converted the space adjacent to the technology lab into a 500 sq. ft. MakerSpace that now houses a mix of state-of-the-art, rapid prototyping machines and traditional tools. There’s even a sewing machine. The result is a learning laboratory capable of supporting classes like Science and Engineering and Functional Design where challenges are embraced, problems are solved, and ideas are transformed into reality.
