The Impact of Your Generosity The Vail Mountain School Community is generous, selfless, supportive, and creative. I have never been more aware of the impact of these virtues of our community than this past, very unique, school year. During the months of August through March, we celebrated cherished VMS traditions including the Gala, Book Fair, Alumni Breakfast, Bingo Night and other Parent Partner events, Intraterm, and more. These efforts were supported by your generous volunteer hours, financial support, and unique talents. Of course, our March – May calendar looked much different but your support, willingness to pitch in, and flexibility enabled us to pivot to remote learning while ensuring our community still remained as strong as ever. The 2019-2020 Annual Report highlights many, but certainly not all, of these efforts. We acknowledge and appreciate the partnership and inspired support of all constituents in our community: parents, grandparents, teachers, staff, students, alumni, and volunteers. Your efforts have allowed us to deliver our mission: Develop Character; Seek Knowledge; Build Community, each and every day, remotely or on campus, together or socially distanced. Thank You for Your Generosity VMS Fund
Endowment
The VMS Fund supports the aspirations, dreams, and needs of our community. All donations to the VMS Fund help us fulfill our Strategic Plan in areas such as hiring, retaining, and developing extraordinary teachers, and enriching the classroom experience with curriculum that engages and challenges your children. While this year’s VMS Fund was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the VMS community still made gifts totaling $193,440.
Gifts to the VMS Endowment provide dedicated and permanent funding for our school and allow VMS to both plan for the future and support our current students. Endowment funds, held in trust and invested in perpetuity, will continue to be available to students far into the future. We welcome your questions and look forward to conversations about how we can partner to fulfill the school’s needs and engage your philanthropic interests.
Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund Our commitment to keep our community together and support one another throughout the COVID-19 pandemic was made possible by generous donations to the Emergency Tuition Assistance Fund (ETAF). The pandemic and ensuing obstacles created financial shortfalls as we increased tuition assistance to keep our community whole, purchased the Synexis and Clorox 360 cleaning systems, and implemented other safety modifications. A total of $61,226 was raised for ETAF through June 30, 2020, with additional funds received in the 2020-2021 fiscal year.

Impact of COVID-19 As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vail Mountain School transitioned to a remote learning plan on Monday, March 16. This effectively ended the VMS Fund campaign early in our efforts. As a result, the VMS Fund results were significantly less than the 2019 fiscal year. VMS was able, with the partnership of our families and passion of our teachers, to provide a quality VMS education remotely. Our students, teachers, and parents exhibited flexibility, patience, and perseverance throughout this difficult time. While not perfect, we are proud of how we united as a community to carry on through a very challenging time.

Volunteers Our volunteers are the lifeblood of Vail Mountain School. Many, many parents and grandparents volunteer each year in a variety of ways, including planning and executing Bingo Night, The Book Fair & Holiday Market, Parent Partner events, teacher appreciation breakfasts, and more. Other volunteers serve as Homebase Parents, new family ambassadors, event hosts, and classroom helpers. We missed the 2020 Garage Sale and Casino Night but we hope to see these events return soon. “We joined the VMS community when Anthony started Kindergarten in August 2016. Since that time, we have volunteered for the Gala, Garage Sale, teachers appreciation breakfasts, The Day of the Arts, and Ski Fridays. We have volunteered on field trips and make it a point to support teachers in every way possible. We are Lower School welcome ambassadors and members of Parent Partners. We feel that parent involvement is an important part of how VMS achieves its mission. We are also very fortunate to be able to volunteer the time generously, for VMS to succeed, and continue to support the community. We are now entering our fifth year at VMS and the community is an integral part of our family and our daily living.� ~ Mark, Toko, and Anthony Wimberly

Parent Partners The VMS parent association, Parent Partners, expanded its role from being primarily a teacher support organization to one that creates a dynamic parent community through hosting various events. Relationships are most often built on the hiking trail, and on the chairlift. Parent Partners offers parental enrichment in collaboration with the school, via the speaker series program. It promotes effective weekly communication with the use of Homebase Parents. Parent Partners could not forget it’s roots, and continues to actively support and appreciate VMS faculty and staff throughout the year by hosting breakfasts and other gratitude filled activities. Joining a new school can often be overwhelming, so Parent Partners takes on the vital role of matching new families with a welcome family so that the transition can be as seamless as possible. A few of the favorite parent/ family events at VMS are Bingo Night, Casino Night, and of course the community Garage Sale. Parent Partners is proudly at the heart of more than a dozen events like hikes and ski days, that provide meaningful opportunities for parents to volunteer in support of the school and connect socially by building long lasting relationships.
Sue Franciose, VMS Garage Sale The VMS Garage Sale began in 1991. From its humble beginnings in the Dining Hall, the iconic VMS event has grown into a two day event that draws people from all over the state and helps not only our own families but the greater Eagle County community. Since 2010, the VMS Garage Sale has been chaired by Sue Franciose, Garage Sale organizer extraordinaire! Proceeds from the annual Garage Sale have evolved over the years from an average of $5,000 to over $20,000 annually. The event began with a few donations from VMS families but now includes year-round donations. Many local furniture stores, clothing consignment stores, realtors, property managers, hotels, and other businesses now partner with Sue to donate items. In fact, 70% of donations come from outside the VMS community. It has become the “sale to end all sales”! Sue relies on a core group of five or six assistants each year as well as over 60 volunteers, most of whom work the week before to help organize and display items in the gymnasiums as well as during the two day event itself. Students get involved by helping the night of the sale to run the “hold” table and help shoppers. All VMS faculty receive a voucher to use for personal shopping; they are also able to shop for free for items for their classrooms. While this event was certainly a successful fundraiser for VMS, Sue had a greater vision to expand the benefactors to the local community. She invites Salvation Army & Bright Future families to shop for free each year. Proceeds from the Garage Sale fund the Parent Partners budget which in turn supports teacher appreciation, parent events, new family gifts, Bingo Night, Casino Night, senior projects, and more. Sue collects and stores items all year long, cataloging and organizing along the way. What started out as a modest fundraiser providing good deals at low prices has now blossomed into a large scale event that benefits many people in need throughout the community. Sue’s devotion and year-round commitment has made all the difference and we are grateful for her dedication and hard work. While we missed the Garage Sale in 2020, we look forward to its return soon!

Gala The Annual Gala and Auction, Step Outside, took place on Saturday, November 9. Parents, supporters, and faculty came together for a night of fine dining, dancing, and high-energy bidding on auction items—all in support of our students. The highlight was the annual paddle raise in support of our outdoor education, our community service initiative, increased scholarships for intraterm, and support for faculty with increased professional development. The 2019 Paddle Raise also allowed for us to create a new outdoor equipment assistance fund to provide access and equity for all students in outdoor pursuits. A team of dedicated volunteers made this event possible, led by Carter Sharfstein and Melissa Provencher. A total of 14 sponsors made an enormous impact on the fiscal success of the night, and generous in-kind gifts helped fuel the silent auction. Thank you to the VMS Gala team and all who sponsored, donated, or attended the 2019 Step Outside Gala.

Alumni The class of 2009 celebrated their 10-year reunion on the steps of the cabin cheering on the Gore Rangers on a beautiful blue-sky September day. Highlights of the reunion included reconnecting with classmates, teachers, and parents, a scavenger hunt put on by Upper School teachers, pickleball, and dinner in Vail Village. The Holiday Breakfast and Alumni Coffee was also an event of celebration and reconnecting with over 50 alumni in attendance. What doesn’t change at VMS on this day? The chaos, the hugs, the reconnections, spilled OJ, and a round of the fight song, led by Mrs. Macsata. Alumni are the honored guests and an important part of the fabric of our community. In January, Dr. Drescher and Ms. Ferrara hosted five alumni to a panel discussion for the class of 2020. Our alumni students covered topics from taking a gap year, to the experiences of a freshman, to words of wisdom from college seniors. Senior Seminar, a professional growth course created by feedback from VMS graduates on how we could better prepare students for college, has become an important part of senior year.
The scavenger hunt: Mr. Compton and Mr. Sappenfield’s challenge: “Measure the velocity of Gore Creek with a velocity measuring device and then use this value to predict the time it would take for the duck to travel 10 meters.”
