I’ve always pushed myself to step outside, both literally and figuratively. The lessons I’ve learned traveling the globe and living among people different than myself have been profoundly transformative. As an educator, questioning assumptions and thinking outside of the box are essential ingredients for growth that I’ve tried to instill in my students. Similarly, as a Head of School, I challenge myself and our leadership team to push beyond what’s worked in the past, what’s comfortable, what’s familiar, and ask, what’s next? This Annual Report is focused on how we’ve answered this question in the past year by adding key personnel and expanding programs to ensure that our students have the support and encouragement they need to step outside and ask themselves, what’s next? This Report is also an acknowledgement of the inspired support and partnership provided by our community, which has made all of this possible and to whom we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Admissions Last spring, 48 VMS seniors filled the Ford Amphitheater stage for graduation. This fall, we welcomed 46 ninth graders. Both figures represent historic highs and evidence a continued upward trend in demand for upper school spots. Interest in Middle School also stands on solid ground with wait pools in sixth and eighth grade. And this fall, kindergarten kicked off the year with 26 students, which is the most in recent years. The school continues to use a broadbased approach to enrollment marketing, but has also launched new initiatives to cultivate underrepresented markets and target specific enrollment needs. Among them, events in Summit County and the Town of Eagle, and a new child-development centered event at VMS designed to connect with parents of preschool age children.
VMS Fund 90% of our families gave to the VMS Fund last year with eight of thirteen grades achieving greater than 90% participation and three hitting the 100% mark. And while this represents a school record for participation, when compared to a national average that hovers in the 65% range, one realizes the incredible significance of this achievement. It’s an undeniable endorsement of our teachers, our programs, and our mission to Develop Character, Seek Knowledge, and Build Community.

Project-Based Learning Speaker Series The 2018 Gala Paddle Raise set out to bolster the resources available to support our students’ social-emotional needs and the investments made by the VMS community in this area are already paying dividends. As a result of the Paddle Raise, the school launched the Thinking Ahead Speaker Series which will bring five speakers to our campus this year including nationally acclaimed authors, Julie LythcottHaims and Lisa Damour. The goal of the speaker series is to enhance the partnership between parents and the school and be a resource for the local community by bringing in experts in child development, parenting, and education.
Now two years in, the school’s project-based learning initiative continues to thrive. Last year, the VMS Minnow Tank challenged middle and upper school students to dive deep into design thinking; our fifth grade brought the VMS community together to help students at a fledgling community school in Savannah, GA; upper school students helped a local food bank tackle organizational challenges; and our LA&B Program closed out its inaugural year with projects ranging from dance to electrical engineering. This year, VMS welcomes Kelly Reseigh who comes to us from the Buck Institute, a leader in PBL. Kelly leads the LA&B program and brings a wealth of expertise for fellow faculty to tap as they develop their own PBL curriculum.

A Resource for Our Community There’s a new sheriff in town, so to speak. Meet Melissa Metcalfe, our VMS School Resource Officer, a new position at VMS that was made possible, in part, by last year’s VMS Gala Paddle Raise. Melissa is a fully sworn officer with the Town of Vail Police Department and works both for VMS and the town through a unique public/private partnership that is among the first of its kind in the region if not the country. As such, she is trained and equipped to provide the highest level of campus safety, but as importantly, she also serves as a critical link to the Town’s emergency services and code enforcement personnel, with whom we work closely to manage things like police and fire drills, as well as parking. When the school set out to hire an SRO, the goal was to find an individual who would not only ensure the safety of our community, but who could also work hand-inhand with the school’s counseling staff to provide primary prevention programming. The intention was also to find someone who would endear themselves to each individual in our community—students, faculty, and parents alike. And indeed she has. Melissa has already made great strides in enhancing the school’s risk management protocols and is typically booked about two weeks out for “lunch dates” with lower school admirers.

Inspired Giving Six years ago, the Ingalls and Conlin families created a scholarship at VMS to carry on the legacy of their late son Taft. The goal was simple: attract the best and brightest by offering a full, merit-based scholarship to a student with the potential to change the world. And in the years since, the recipients of the Scholarship are well on their way to doing just. Kevin Garcia is at Williams and Lauren Dirvonas is at Colgate. 11th grader Sergio Rodriguez spent July with SummerQuest mentoring local middle school students. And this year, VMS welcomed the latest recipient, Felix Gruner. In addition to raising the bar for our community, the Taft Conlin Scholarship has also had a number of ripple effects. It has attracted a diverse group of distinguished students who otherwise might not have considered an independent school. Inspired by these incredible applicants to the Taft Conlin Scholarship, an anonymous donor family stepped forward and offered four-year, needs-based, full-tuition awards for two similarly talented students, to help continue our tradition of having the very best and brightest.

Social-Emotional Growth Kathy Napoli joined VMS in the spring of 2019 as a school counselor. Her arrival at the school came as a direct result of an anonymous family’s endowment gift in support of Social Emotional Health for our students. She has been instrumental along with school psychologist, Dr. Kate Drescher, in expanding the social-emotional support and programming available to students. Part of Kathy’s work is individual counseling that runs the gamut from everyday issues like executive functioning and building social skills, to more complex conversations such as sexuality and gender identity, or how to balance the pressures of being an elite-level scholar-athlete. And while this work is the bread and butter of a school counselor, Kathy would tell you that the area of greatest need for social-emotional support is the primary prevention work she’s been doing to get ahead of issues. Toward that end, she’s been working with small groups in lower school to encourage healthy social dynamics. In middle school, Kathy has been an integral part of implementing a new advisory curriculum and has partnered with the Caring Schools Network at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education. And in upper school, she’s advising the Student Leadership Council on how to create a positive and supportive culture and collaborating with faculty to develop curriculum related to social justice. The Julie and John Kaemmer Endowment for Social Emotional Health is named in honor of Dr. Kate Drescher’s parents and her contribution to the school.

Real World Learning Experiential learning at VMS takes many forms ranging from day-long class trips to immersive Senior project internships that span an entire semester. Regardless, the goal is the same—to learn something by living it—and last spring, a number of seniors went “all-in” on their capstone projects to do just this. Emma Blakslee learned about beekeeping and the critical role that pollinators play in the future of our food supply. Sarah Evans apprenticed with a Summit County master craftsman to explore the ancient art of glassblowing. Peter Littman, whose passions include jazz and technology, flipped the script and helped Vail Jazz explore ways to connect with local youth by leveraging social media. Henry Heaydon got his hands dirty, both literally and figuratively restoring a 1995 Honda Prelude popular with car-racing enthusiasts. Through real-world engagements like these, the hope is not only to provide opportunities to explore something new or deepen a passion, but as importantly, to gain an understanding of how one can turn an interest into a life’s work.
