Presentation of the
New Market Medal and
New Market Ceremony May 15, 2018
Virginia Mourning Her Dead, by sculptor Sir Moses Ezekiel, New Market Cadet and Class of 1866, given to honor the New Market Cadets.
The New Market Medal The VMI Board of Visitors established the New Market Medal to recognize exceptional individuals who have demonstrated in their lives the qualities of duty, honor, devotion, and leadership. The criteria for selecting awardees was inspired by the steadfast conduct of the members of the Corps of Cadets who fought in the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. The medal was designed by the distinguished artist Pierre Daura, a native of Spain who made Virginia his home for three decades before his death in 1976. On the obverse of the three-inch bronze medal is a bas-relief based on Benjamin West Clinedinst’s heroic painting of the cadet charge at New Market; on the reverse are the words “Duty, Honor, Devotion, Leadership” surrounded by a laurel wreath entwined with dogwood blossoms.

General John P. Jumper ’66 the
New Market Medal In recognition of those same virtues of duty, honor, devotion and leadership which carried forward the VMI Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864. For a nationally renowned military career culminating with service as the 17th Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force; For an extraordinary corporate career serving as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and Leidos; For magnanimous service to the community serving on the boards of Hyster-Yale, the North American Coal Corporation Industries, RollsRoyce North America, and the non-profit boards of the Marshall Foundation, the Air Force Village Charitable Foundation and the Museum of the American Revolution; For his tireless devotion to his alma mater as a distinguished member of the VMI Board of Visitors from 2009-2017, serving as its president from 2016-2017; and, For a life of dedicated service to this Nation, one that has emulated the VMI concept of the Citizen-Soldier and the ageless values of VMI.
New Market Ceremony The cadets called to the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864, have come to represent the bravery and sacrifice of all the Institute’s alumni who have served our nation. Standing with the 10 New Market cadets who died in that battle are scores of alumni who died in service to the nation across the generations. Their sacrifice was made in a battle that engulfed the entire Corps of Cadets – the only time in America’s history that the entire student body of a college fought as a unit in battle. The New Market cadets are named today for the soldierly qualities they exemplified and which all cadets seek to emulate, the qualities of duty, honor, devotion, and leadership.
The Ceremonial Formation The Corps of Cadets marches from Barracks to the Parade Ground, forming two battalions centered on the statue Virginia Mourning Her Dead, at the base of which are buried cadets who died in the Battle of New Market.
Presentation of the New Market Medal The New Market Medal honors an individual whose life and career mirror the virtues shown by the New Market cadets. Following the presentation of the medal, the recipient will address remarks to the Corps of Cadets.
The Roll Call The ceremony begins with the historic roll call of the 10 cadets who died in the battle, each name called by the commander of the company in which that cadet served. In response to each name called, a cadet appointed for the ceremony gives the traditional reply: “Died on the field of honor.” The commanders of the companies of the Corps established since 1864 report for alumni who died in America’s wars since the Mexican-American War. The Regimental Commander then gives the full report to the Commandant.

The Ceremony and Review Floral tributes are laid at the foot of Virginia Mourning Her Dead and at the three arches of Barracks that display plaques naming alumni who died in battle. The Chaplain recites the New Market Prayer, and a three-volley salute is fired. At the conclusion of the gun salute, an echo rendition of Taps is played followed by the playing of Amazing Grace. The Corps then marches to the end of the Parade Ground, onto Letcher Avenue toward Barracks, and renders an eyesright salute to the Superintendent and the Commandant as it marches in front of the monument.
