MAJAHUITAS:

GLOBAL ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN AN EXCLUSIVE SETTING ELECTRÓNICA

GLOBAL EN UN AMBIENTE EXCLUSIVO

Majahuitas Beach / Playa Majahuitas | @majahuitas

SINCE ITS OPENING in 2020, Majahuitas has operated as a beach club inspired by those iconic international destinations where music and landscape mesh naturally. While places like Mykonos, Ibiza, and Marbella served as conceptual touchstones, the project found its own soul by leaning into its unique natural surroundings: an emerald-water cove encircled by virtually untouched tropical rainforest. Rather than transforming the landscape, the vision was to frame it. Every element—from the infrastructure and ambiance to the furnishings—was designed to enhance the site’s raw, natural energy.

The integration of electronic music as the core of the experience was a strategic decision aligned with its cosmopolitan audience: a community accustomed to high-end global festivals. By hosting established figures such as Hugel, Mahmut Orhan, Lee Foss, Jan Blomqvist, HVOB, Tom & Collins, Mita Gami, and Adam Ten, Majahuitas has solidified its position on the international electronic circuit, giving Puerto Vallarta a prominent voice in the global musical conversation.

DJ Joezi.

Its sonic personality is best described as hippie chic: relaxed, organic, and authentic. While House, Deep House, and Afro House predominate, other genres evolve throughout the day. Afternoons begin with atmospheric sets that welcome visitors, encouraging a deep appreciation of the surroundings. As the sun sets, the rhythmic intensity builds, transforming the beach into a dance floor. The peak occurs at twilight, when the headliner ignites the synergy between the people, the music, and the setting. Carefully curated lighting and laser effects expand the experience into an immersive event that stimulates sight, sound, and spatial awareness.

act as a curator and sonic guide, crafting a journey that encourages guests to let go and connect. This interaction between artist, audience, and environment generates a unique synergy: the ocean as a backdrop, the sand as a tactile surface, and the jungle as a natural acoustic boundary.

The culinary offerings at Majahuitas complement this sensory journey, designed to match the rhythm of the day and sustain an extended oceanside experience. Adding to this allure is the exclusive boat-only access. The round-trip transfer is more than just logistics; it is a transitional ritual. From boarding the vessel to the return to port, the day unfolds as an intentional escape that redefines regional beachside entertainment.

ECLECTIC

MUSIC

IN A LOCAL SETTING MÚSICA ECLÉCTICA EN UN ENTORNO LOCAL

Camarones Beach / Playa Camarones @elbarracuda_elsolar

ESTABLISHED IN 2007 on Camarones Beach, El Solar Beach Bar has become a cornerstone of Puerto Vallarta’s coastal identity. Its evolution hasn’t relied on chasing high-concept sophistication, but rather on refining its essence as a profoundly local space. More bar than restaurant, the concept revolves around its literal and symbolic proximity to the ocean. Sunbeds in the morning, cocktails at midday, and a seamless transition toward sunset create an environment where formality is irrelevant and authenticity is the primary luxury.

Music occupies a central role in this dynamic, with a consistent program running through the weekends. Unlike models that enforce a strict sonic identity, diversity is paramount at El Solar. House, experimental electronic, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, reggae, alternative cumbia, and Mexican indie rock coexist in a deliberate rotation. This variety is not a lack of focus, but rather an intentional playlist designed to weave together different audiences and moods. Some visitors are drawn by a specific DJ or band, while others are captivated by the spontaneous atmosphere created when live music meets the setting sun.

On many nights, a fire show on the sand adds a theatrical dimension to the evening. Rather than an outlier event, it is a recurring ritual that reinforces the primal relationship between landscape and sound.

Without a permanent resident, the schedule balances established talent, emerging acts, and strategic guest appearances. Projects like Akuaman Sound System coexist with alternative bands that incorporate live instruments into contemporary formats. Here, the musician acts as a catalyst for micro-communities that gather around specific styles, maintaining the ever-changing, vibrant character of this place.

Between laid-back gastronomy and sunset DJ sessions, the beach is transformed into the ideal space for socializing.

The cuisine reinforces this unpretentious identity, featuring fresh, seasonal seafood and traditional local favorites. At the bar, classic and signature cocktails share the spotlight with house-made raicilla and flagship spirits.

Ultimately, El Solar shows that style does not have to be formal, and that Vallarta’s unpolished authenticity is a unique feature in itself.

WHERE HOUSE MUSIC IS THE PULSE OF THE EXPERIENCE EL HOUSE COMO PULSO CONSTANTE DE LA EXPERIENCIA

Bucerías Beach / Playa Bucerías @naufragooceanclubx

NÁUFRAGO OCEAN CLUB opened its doors in April 2025 with a clear mission: to provide effortless, high-quality access to the beach. Rather than positioning itself as an exclusionary club, the project was designed as an open haven where residents and visitors can arrive early, gather with family or friends, and remain until sunset without pretense or restriction.

Electronic music is fundamental to this concept, viewed as a catalyst for shifting moods—capable of relaxing, accompanying, or elevating energy without imposing a forced party environment. Within this spectrum, House music stands out as the predominant language due to its enduring appeal and immersive quality. Its steady pulse creates an atmosphere that transitions naturally from daytime introspection to the vibrant intensity of the sunset.

DJ Salvo.

The club’s musical personality rests largely on the shoulders of DJ Salvo Bonaccorsi, whose weekend afternoon sessions feature four-hour sets that coincide with peak hours, leading the collective energy to its highest point at dusk.

The lineup is further enriched by guest artists, including DJ Cherry D and DJ Sexy Beats, along with live rock bands and curated special events. This strategic rotation keeps the programming fresh without disrupting the club’s coherent character.

Families, couples, residents, and travelers all coexist in an environment where electronic music never overshadows the welcoming atmosphere, but instead complements it. This inclusivity is one of the club’s most defining features within the regional scene.

The golden hour sets the pace: electronic beats and oceanfront conversation come together to create a unique atmosphere.

The venue boasts relaxed architecture with private cabañas and beach loungers. The cuisine focuses on fresh seafood with bold, contemporary accents, while the bar serves signature cocktails crafted to be the perfect pairing for a day by the water.

Náufrago Ocean Club is committed to long-term hospitality, championing the idea of a "full day at the beach" as a holistic concept where music, gastronomy, and open access converge.

Careyeros Beach / Playa Careyeros

@elbarracudapuntademita

EL BARRACUDA Mita began its journey in 2019, honoring the legacy of the original 2007 concept while carving its own path. Its offering revives the freshness of market-style seafood, elevating it into a signature experience.

The expansive landscape and the area’s unhurried pace fostered a natural transition from a coastal eatery to a comprehensive beach day experience. Music initially emerged as a strategy to energize the space, but the public’s enthusiastic response transformed

this tactical resource into a core component that now defines the venue’s weekend identity.

In its early stages, the musical approach was understated— designed to set a mood without dominating the conversation. However, the energy of the patrons reshaped the concept. Today, the Sunday afternoon sessions create an atmosphere that oscillates between celebration and extended socializing. Music has evolved from a background element into a powerful social catalyst.

Stunning sunsets and carefully curated DJ sets, paired with exquisite dining along the Mexican Pacific.

Unlike other beach clubs in the region, this oceanfront destination does not adhere to a single genre; instead, it spans from House and Techno to Afro House. The philosophy centers on “reading the room.” The DJ operates with creative freedom, adjusting the selection to match the day’s audience and the pulse of the moment. This fluidity allows for transitions from chilled-out sounds to unexpected pop references, making the element of surprise an added value.

The curation focuses less on the DJ’s personal profile and more on their ability to connect with the crowd. Figures like René Clay and Karl Tostado pioneered this model and remain recurring favorites, joined by a rotation of talent selected for their intuitive understanding of “vibe-building.”

El Barracuda Mita redefines beachside entertainment through the harmony of opposites: a space where electronic music coexists organically with impeccable culinary craft. In this inclusive environment, luxury is found in freedom—inviting guests to let the breeze and the rhythm guide them through an unforgettable evening.

Sayulita Beach / Playa Sayulita

@tropikos_sayulita

ON THE SHORES of Sayulita, Trópikos Beach Club emerges as a Mediterranean reinterpretation of the Pacific coast. Opening in January 2026, the project was built on a specific premise: to bring the aesthetics and hospitality of European beach clubs to the Riviera Nayarit, while adapting them to the local rhythm and climate. Beyond its decorative allure, the inspiration was to offer a new way of experiencing the beach, where gastronomy and music mesh organically.

The club’s highly photogenic design features a layered layout, including an ocean-facing pool, lounge chairs on the sand, open-air cabañas, and a climate-controlled indoor area. This hybrid architecture allows guests to move between sun and shade without losing aesthetic continuity.

From its inception, electronic music has been a structural pillar. In a destination already famous for its nightlife, the goal was to bring that same energy to the daylight hours. The sound leans toward House Chill, with

TIERRA TROPICAL BEACH CLUB:

RELAXED LUXURY WHERE MUSIC FOSTERS SOCIAL CONNECTION

LUJO RELAJADO DONDE LA MÚSICA FOMENTA CONEXIONES SOCIALES

San Pancho Beach / Playa San Pancho @tierratropicalbeachclub

NORTH OF San Pancho Beach lies the relaxed and accessible luxury concept of Tierra Tropical Beach Club. Since 2018, it has contributed to transforming the beachside experience in our destination.

The club’s core philosophy is flexibility. Guests can enjoy an extended stay via a day pass or opt for a spontaneous visit for a sunset cocktail or a meal under the impressive grand palapa. The layout—spanning the beach, the pool, the lounge, and the covered restaurant—accommodates various paces and preferences, cultivating an atmosphere that prioritizes genuine comfort over ostentation.

In its formative years, the musical programming centered on live performances, particularly salsa and Latin rhythms. However, as the destination has evolved and its visitors have become more sophisticated, the club has shifted toward DJ sets. These “sunset sessions” create an immersive musical journey that often extends well into the night.

THE LABEL RHEA:

@RHEA_THELABEL

FOR DEBORA Mestre, the ocean is more than scenery; it is memory, identity, and a creative compass. Born in Mexico City but raised in Puerto Vallarta, her life story is intimately tied to the Pacific. During her college years, she met Alexa Hernández, a native of Palm Beach, Florida. Their friendship blossomed naturally, rooted in days spent in swimwear, immersed in water sports and in constant contact with the natural world.

In 2015, as the independent swimwear market began to diversify, they envisioned a brand that would reimagine the swimsuit as a “second skin”—one that allowed for an authentic, unhindered interaction with the water. Growing up by the sea rather than in an urban center inspired a fundamental realization: a bikini is not merely a functional garment, but a vehicle for self-esteem and body expression. Following a transformative student exchange in Australia, they decided to formalize their vision. RHEA: The Label was officially launched in 2021 with a debut pop-up store in Sayulita.

The RHEA aesthetic is defined by clean silhouettes, flattering cuts, and a precise balance between utility and detail. Their pieces are designed to be mix-and-match, offering the flexibility to combine tops and bottoms in various sizes, colors, and fits. However, the true differentiator lies in their textile engineering. They utilize ECONYL®—a nylon regenerated from reclaimed fishing nets—alongside an ultra-soft Italian fabric with four-way stretch technology, ensuring a flawless, comfortable fit.

“It inspires me to know that what grew out of our friendship and our life by the ocean can transform how a woman perceives herself. When I’m at the beach and feel the salt on my skin, I’m reminded of why we started: for freedom, confidence, and a real connection to our true selves.”

—Debora Mestre, co-founder of RHEA: The Label.

—Debora Mestre, cofundadora de RHEA: The Label.

To maximize both softness and performance, they replaced conventional linings with a double layer of this specialized fabric, constructed with invisible seams to prevent marks on the skin. Most designs incorporate adjustable straps or adaptable features, eliminating the need for custom tailoring. The result is a collection designed not just for sunbathing, but for an active outdoor life that demands full freedom of movement.

The “secret ingredient” of RHEA: The Label is less technical and more human: their bond. Before becoming business partners, they are friends. “Everything we do is born from a love for how we live and for who we are,” Alexa concludes.

IN PUERTO VALLARTA , Linda Baltazar found the ideal sanctuary to redefine her creative calling. At the helm of Hilo y el Mar, she has established a boutique workshop that engages the coastal environment in a sophisticated dialogue centered on ethics, functionality, and a refined aesthetic.

Originally from Guadalajara and trained in Fashion Design, Linda arrived in the region nine years ago and was met with a revealing reality: her city wardrobe was entirely ill-suited for the tropical climate and local pace. “I decided to create clothes that were incredibly fresh yet possessed a modern edge,” she shares. What began as a personal necessity soon blossomed into a lifelong project.

The brand’s name was conceived during a panga trip to Las Caletas, inspired by the ocean and the ethereal music of artist Elsa y Elmar. In 2017, she opened her first location in El Centro, in a space that had previously served as a tailor shop—a coincidence she embraced as a fortuitous sign.

Mientras

While performing alterations and repairs, she developed her first linen collection; the overwhelming response confirmed she had tapped into a specific, unmet need.

Life in Banderas Bay fundamentally altered her design philosophy. While in Guadalajara she responded to the frenetic pace of urban living, here she learned to design for the daily rhythms of the tropics. Today, from her workshop in the Versalles neighborhood, she crafts a stylish proposal that balances freshness, modernity, and enduring quality.

In her creative universe, the ocean serves as both an aesthetic and functional muse. Each outfit is designed for versatility—suitable for a morning stroll on the sand, yet effortlessly elegant enough for a seaside dinner at sunset. Her palettes range from luminous neutrals to vibrant accents, characterized by fluid silhouettes and light textiles.

“It inspires me to know that each garment is crafted for authentic moments—whether in the sun, by the sea, or sharing a meal with friends. Creating from the coast reminds me that while everything flows, quality endures. As long as I can design with ethics and passion, I will continue my work here.” —Linda Baltazar, director and designer of Hilo y el Mar.

Her process is deeply sensory. Guided by a specific chromatic range, she must feel the fabric before committing to a design. She prioritizes natural fibers like cotton and linen for their breathability and resilience against the coastal elements, eschewing synthetics that compromise comfort. Meticulous tailoring and impeccable finishes remain the core of her quality standards.

Over time, the brand has expanded into hospitality projects and collaborations with interior designers, developing bespoke textiles for ultra-luxury resorts and restaurants.

In a region where the garment industry is not widely established, she chose to personally hire and train her team rather than outsourcing. “For me, dignifying the art of sewing is a fundamental pillar of Hilo y el Mar,” she concludes.

CREATIONS DARE

DARINA JIMÉNEZ is the visionary behind DARE Creations, a jewelry brand designed to exist in perfect harmony with the ocean, featuring pieces that are unafraid of salt, sun, or the dynamic energy of coastal life.

Based in Puerto Vallarta, DARE Creations took root around 2010. “I began designing pieces for myself with a very clear criterion: absolute functionality,” she explains.

What started as personal exploration quickly garnered interest from friends and acquaintances, leading to informal commissions and sales in local cafes. While she was studying Interior Design, jewelry making evolved from a side venture into a thriving business. Her journey saw her move from a small corner in

She embodies the spirit of the destination, reflected in an aesthetic proposal of nature, subtlety, and authenticity, elegantly integrated with pearls, minerals, and natural stones.

SURFBOARDS MAS

MIGUEL SINCLAIR found the shores of Punta de Mita to be the ultimate workshop for MAS Surfboards. The brand’s history is written in waves and improvised workspaces, where the ocean has always played the lead role.

Surfing is a fundamental part of Miguel’s heritage. His grandfather was a practitioner of the sport, and his father, originally from California, worked with legendary factories that produced iconic brands like Bing Surfboards and Channel Islands Surfboards. In 1996, his parents opened the Coral Reef Surfshop in Bucerías, which served as his hands-on academy: repairing boards, teaching lessons, and absorbing surf culture from the ground up.

At 15, local surfer Roy McLean gave him two “blanks”—the raw foam cores used to make a board—and encouraged him to build one from scratch. “The first one was a disaster, but the process fascinated me,” he recalls. Without formal training or tutorials, he

began shaping as a self-taught craftsman in a makeshift shop behind his home.

His drive to master the technical nuances of the craft led him to California in 2020. There, he spent months perfecting lamination processes, fin installation, and professional finishes. “I wanted to bring that elite standard back to Mexico,” he explains. Then, he returned equipped with superior materials, advanced knowledge, and a conviction to produce surfboards in our region that rival the quality historically associated with the American coast.

“What inspires me is knowing that each board will become a chapter in someone’s story with the ocean. To think that years from now, they will still be surfing on something that came out of my own hands motivates me to perfect this craft every single day.” —Miguel Sinclair, founder of MAS Surfboards.

In 2022, he moved MAS Surfboards into its current location, which serves as both a workshop and a showroom. Since then, he has produced nearly 900 boards, each custom-made following a detailed consultation with the rider regarding wave type, experience level, fin systems, and color palettes.

The brand’s ethics are reflected in a rigorous selection of materials, including the importation of specific resins and components when a project demands it. “I want my boards to incorporate elements with roots that run deep in the history of surfing,” he says.

The uniqueness of MAS Surfboards lies in an elite combination: Miguel is both a high-level surfer and a master shaper, applying the same rigorous standards to both roles. Sponsored by Katin and maintaining ties to Bing Surfboards, his work carries immense legitimacy within the industry. “I believe that this combination is what brings true excellence to the brand,” he concludes.

BALM SALMOS

IN THE SERENE community of Lo de Marcos, Priscila Molina discovered the perfect environment to cultivate a brand that synthesizes aesthetic passion with personal transformation. Balm Salmos was born as a line of natural cosmetics, but it serves as an extension of her own journey.

In 2018, after relocating from Querétaro to this Riviera Nayarit micro-destination, she realized that such a significant geographical shift required a project of her own. As a recent Business Administration graduate with a genuine interest in skincare, she saw the move as an opportunity for a purposeful entrepreneurial venture.

The current line is built around an essential four-step routine: a hydrating face serum, a night serum, a toner/after-sun mist, and a facial sunscreen. Her formulations feature active ingredients like cold-pressed avocado and grape seed oils.

Product development is guided by a principle of technical rigor. “Here, ingredients aren't just tossed together like a recipe. Cosmetic formulation demands scientific precision.” Each product

Habibi:

Contemporary Mediterranean Cuisine with an Italian Soul Cocina Mediterránea Contemporánea con Alma Italiana

WOVEN INTO the relaxed community of San Pancho, Habibi stands as an intimate enclave of hospitality. At its helm is partner and executive chef Andrea Nardó, who describes the concept with profound affection: “The restaurant’s name translates to ‘my heart’, ‘my family’, ‘my love.’ That is exactly the sentiment we strive to convey to our patrons,” he shares. This philosophy defines the ambiance of the space, the pace of its service, and its culinary narrative.

While its foundations are Mediterranean with a distinct Italian core, Habibi’s cuisine embraces a more personal approach—one built upon family heritage and refined through contemporary techniques. “It is a free interpretation that honors tradition without being constrained by it.”

The artistry of Habibi’s kitchen reveals itself through bold, sophisticated contrasts, best exemplified by the Burrata with Activated Charcoal Fried Pizza. The dough, prepared to achieve a crisp, airy lightness with a striking jet-black aesthetic, serves as a canvas for the creaminess of imported Italian burrata. The dish is further elevated by a basil and pistachio pesto that introduces bright herbal notes and a subtle toasted nuance. It is a masterclass in texture: the initial chew of the artisanal bread gives way to a velvet richness, striking a precise balance between traditional craftsmanship and an avant-garde presentation.

The Seafood Linguine serves as the technical centerpiece of the menu. Inspired by the classic preparations of Southern Italy, this specialty features premium dried pasta and a base of cherry tomatoes reduced with white wine and garlic-infused oil. Prawns, mahi-mahi, clams, and baby squid release their natural essences throughout the cooking process. “We reduce the base until it achieves a near-creamy consistency.” The final touch is a pangrattato—a breadcrumb topping—crafted from artisanal focaccia toasted with tomato, garlic, and herbs to provide a delightful crunch. The result reflects the ocean’s bounty, finished with extra virgin olive oil and fresh parsley.

To pair with this pasta, Andrea suggests the French Sauvignon Blanc Mont Gaillard, a standout from a curated cellar of over 50 labels that rotate annually. As Habibi also operates as a wine shop, the selection features exceptional Italian and Mexican vintages, reinforcing the idea that the experience extends far beyond the table. “I am a true oenophile.

For me, the right bottle has the power to transform an entire evening.”

The meal reaches its crescendo with the Chocolate and Banana Tiramisu, a reinterpretation that respects the classic structure while introducing local character. The mascarpone cream is infused with ripe banana, adding a natural sweetness and silken texture. A delicate caramel— prepared simply with sugar, water, and butter—is layered with fresh banana slices and chocolate to balance bitterness with creaminess. This dessert is the confirmation of the house philosophy: “Everything is fundamentally Italian, but always with a quintessential touch of Mexico,” he concludes.

SOME SUNDAYS demand the privilege of unfolding before the rest of the city even wakes up.

At 6:45 a.m., we were already parked at Mismaloya Beach. The lack of traffic granted us an extra fifteen minutes—a true pleasure. We watched as the sun began to outline the emerald silhouette of the mountains, while the first pangas prepared to launch into the Pacific.

At 7:00 a.m., Ximena Jacobo appeared. Punctual and serene. She exuded the confidence of someone who lives by the sea and understands its rhythms. She greeted us and immediately stepped into her role as guide. Her young son, Kalany, was by her side, looking completely at ease. “We have been making this journey to Los Arcos together since he started crawling,” she told us, confirming that the board and the sea are essential elements of her lifestyle.

Before approaching the water’s edge, Ximena led a ritual of mindful stretching and hydration. On the cool, damp sand, we awakened our arms, shoulders, and backs while she gently noted that paddleboarding can be far more demanding than it first appears.

She reminded us that the board’s leash must always be secured to the ankle before emphasizing the importance of traveling light. “If you don’t strictly need your phone, don’t bring it. Every ounce of extra weight affects the board’s balance.” With that, the tone for the morning was set: fewer distractions and more presence.

Before launching, she asked us to pause and observe—to identify the current’s direction, assess the shore break, and feel the nearly nonexistent morning breeze. “If we fight the current, the journey will take twice as long,” she explained, gesturing toward the surface, where tiny glimmers of light revealed the subtle, nearly imperceptible movement of the water.

Paddling toward Los Arcos de Mismaloya amidst the ocean’s silence and golden light.

Entering the ocean was easier than we had previously imagined. The warm, crystalline water welcomed us with gentle resistance. We began by lying prone on the boards, and after a few attempts, transitioned to our knees. As it was our first time, the prospect of standing was out of the question. Ximena paddled a few meters ahead with effortless grace, while Kalany sat comfortably, as if stability were a first language learned at home.

“Slow and steady,” she reminded us—the golden rule of the morning. Paddling with too much intensity at the start only guarantees rapid exhaustion. We found our rhythm, and the movement of the paddle became almost meditative. The rhythmic sound of the blade cutting through the water was hypnotic.

At the midpoint of our journey, the monumental rock formations of Los Arcos rose like ancient sculptures against a sky deepening into vibrant shades of blue. We were entering a protected sanctuary. Ximena lowered her voice to remind us of the sanctity

of the space: “There are manta rays and turtles in this area. We are guests in their habitat.” We instinctively peered into the depths, but that day, Nature chose to surprise us in other ways.

Upon reaching Los Arcos, we tethered our boards to a safety line to rest and admire the breathtaking landscape. As the sun bathed the stone arches in golden light, Ximena shared their local identities: “Each one has its own name. We call them Gorilla Rock, Devil’s Arch, the Arch of Love, Mother Island, and Turtle Rock.”

With Los Arcos practically to ourselves, we explored the perimeter, gaining a true appreciation for their imposing scale. Sea birds called out in greeting, while others circled overhead as if guarding their territory. It was a magical moment of profound connection with the natural world.

Before departing, we took in the scenery one last time, beginning our return journey against a slightly different tide, but with a more conscious body and a clearer mind.

Back on the sands of Mismaloya, Ximena suggested we conclude the experience with a brief swim. The water embraced our tired muscles with restorative gentleness. From the shore, Kalany laughed as he dove back into the waves.

As we packed up the equipment, we realized that this expedition had been a masterclass in rhythm, environmental awareness, and deep respect for the ocean.

On the drive home, we spoke of Ximena’s home, where the river meets her doorstep and the beach is mere steps away. For many, that is the purest definition of coastal luxury: having the vast Pacific as your own personal playground.

Matanchén Bay: Where the Mangroves Meet the Open Sea Bahía de Matanchén: Donde el Manglar Abraza al Mar Abierto

A ROAD TRIP has the power to redefine a day from the moment the engine ignites. The route from Puerto Vallarta to Matanchén Bay is one of those journeys that requires little luggage but demands a readiness to be surprised. Setting out early, one takes the highway toward Las Varas before turning off toward San Blas. From that point, with only an hour remaining, the landscape begins to shift, taking on a more rugged and commanding character.

The drive winds through small, charming villages—perfect for a brief pause to savor a traditional Mexican breakfast. As you traverse northward through Nayarit, the air thickens with the scent of salt, announcing your proximity to the Pacific. Just before reaching Matanchén Bay, the surroundings transform into a sprawling network of mangroves and vast wetlands that instinctively invite you to slow your pace.

Extending approximately seven kilometers with remarkably wide beaches, the bay stretches leisurely along a coastline that meets the open sea. While one might expect a more turbulent shore, the location maintains a serene disposition; long, gentle waves lap against fine sands, bordered by a group of palm trees that seem to stand guard over the tranquil scene.

This stretch of coast holds deep historical resonance, with archaeological remains and indigenous tools dating back to 2100 BC. The vestiges of the Matanchén Culture—nomadic groups who were the area’s earliest inhabitants—lend a historical weight that transcends its natural beauty. Understanding that the legacy of ancient civilizations remains sheltered beneath these sands and mangroves adds a profound dimension to the visit.

The bay’s proximity to San Blas— located just eight kilometers away—further amplifies this historical context. During the colonial era, this was the most significant port in the North Pacific. Today, the port facilities have entered a sophisticated new chapter following an extensive 2022 renovation.

Port facilities of / Recinto portuario de San Blas.

The space now integrates an expanded dock, landscaped recreational areas, and a vibrant handicraft market, all sheltered beneath a striking roof shaped like an inverted boat. This project has not only revitalized the town but has become a modern architectural gem in Riviera Nayarit.

Back within the bay, another prominent landmark is the Matanchén Pier, which extends more than 200 meters into the Pacific. Designed in the shape of a Celtic cross, its center features a bronze sculpture honoring Rebeca Méndez, famously known as “La Loca del Muelle de San Blas.”

Beyond the popular legends and song lyrics that immortalized her tragic love story, her figure stands as a testament to the unwavering devotion and deep-rooted connection this region maintains with the ocean.

The Kiekari Cocodrilario— situated two and a half kilometers from the San Blas – Tepic Highway, the bay’s main artery— offers a unique opportunity to experience the wild environment in a whole new way. Dedicated to the care of crocodiles, this conservation center allows you to observe specimens of different ages, as well as jaguars, wild boars and other mammals. This natural sanctuary, which boasts an impressive crystalline spring, can also be reached by private boat through the dense mangroves, offering a unique vantage point to appreciate the delicate ecological balance of the area.

For wildlife enthusiasts, Matanchén Bay has a couple of viewpoints that provide a different perspective of the landscape. Immersed in the jungle and framed by the water, these sites allow for the close observation of swamp crocodiles and a diverse array of bird species. Biodiversity here is seen and experienced in a very tangible way.

The day finds its natural culmination at the dinner table. Just ten minutes away by car, the town of Aticama is an essential stop. Located on the edge of Matanchén Beach, the recently inaugurated Paseo de Aticama connects directly to a beachfront restaurant area (popularly known as cabañas for their rustic wooden design). Here they offer dishes
