ONO propone una pausa

A key part of the ONO experience includes a connection to the community. Ninety percent of their ingredients come from local producers, from honey to peanut butter, supporting their commitment to the regional economy and ensuring freshness in every bite. In doing so, this culinary project that began in a storefront the size of a closet, is now celebrating seven years of success with branches in two of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan areas of the city: Marina Vallarta and the Romantic Zone.

Originally from Brazil, this superfood arrived in Puerto Vallarta as part of a vision from Erica Black, who transported it to our region of the Mexican Pacific, as part of her deep love for coastal living.

Le Bistro, with a privileged

location on the Cuale River Island, was a special restaurant in the nineties—a culinary refuge that delighted residents and visitors with elegance and flavor. Now, under the direction of Alberto Pérez and the renowned La Palapa Group, this classic has been reborn to reclaim the position of prominence it deserves. Surrounded by lush vegetation and the murmur of the river, Le Bistro is a place where time seems to slow down. Its cuisine, which is internationally inspired and paired with Mexican heritage, uses fresh and mostly local ingredients. Chef Pérez has designed a menu that combines tradition with innovative touches: Red Snapper with Beet Sauce and Crispy Quinoa, Fresh Mussels with Aromatic Accents or Roasted Beets with Avocado and Jocoque from El Tuito. The experience is enriched by a wine cellar that houses more than 150 national and international vintages, as well as a creative cocktail bar that invites you to explore new combinations. Sofía Boettner, marketing director of Grupo La Palapa, sums up the essence of this rebirth: “We want to pay homage to the history of the island and offer a place that is perfect for both Vallarta residents and travelers looking for an authentic experience.” Richie Pérez, managing director, defines it precisely: “An oasis in the heart of Puerto Vallarta that has to be experienced.”

historic center, Galería Zenit is the ideal place to appreciate contemporary art with a Mexican soul. This hybrid gallery-workshop space breaks down the barrier between creator and viewer, allowing visitors to discover the artistic process as they explore finished works. Inspired by the zenithal position of the sun, which erases shadows, the gallery seeks to illuminate and highlight the essential elements of art: technique, concept and the story behind each piece.

The gallery is a mixture of neo-Mexicanism and traditional art, embracing diverse mediums such as glassware, abstract and figurative painting. Its offer is enriched with special events and the participation of visiting guest artists that make the gallery a notable cultural meeting point.

A visit to Galería Zenit is to immerse yourself in a microcosm of creativity and authenticity that promotes the essence of Puerto Vallarta, where each work—when experienced up close—transforms both the creator and the viewer.

Marc Holland and Chenoa Mason founded The Studio MX, a modern movement studio celebrating holistic well-being through disciplines such as Pilates, yoga, barre and stretching. “We wanted to introduce a larger studio concept to this region, where people can find everything from group classes to private sessions,” Marc explains.

They opened their first location in Nuevo Vallarta two years ago. Its success was so great that a second space soon opened in Marina Vallarta, which was also very well received. Both locations offer elegant, modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment.

Between turntables and anecdotes, Salvador Pliego (Vorágine), José Romo and Pablo López (Sonoman), Nidia Anaya and Omar Cuarenta (Ritual Moods Records), as well as Adam Bateman (Al Filo Bar) converse. They do it without a script, comfortably like between friends, and at the center of the conversation, as a starting point and return, is vinyl—as a format and as a way of being in the world.

Salvador Pliego, owner of / propietario de Vorágine.

VINYL AS AN EXPERIENCE EL VINILO COMO EXPERIENCIA:

VORÁGINE SALVADOR PLIEGO says it bluntly: “Vinyl is the maximum physical expression of music. It’s organic, tangible, it has weight, and it has texture. For me, it represents a way of exploring music from a sensory perspective.” His personal history with the medium begins at a young age, with Pink Floyd and AC/DC albums that he found in his grandfather’s house. That first audio taste of vinyl took him to parties, bars and cities around the world. Today, he translates it into Vorágine, a small bar in the Versalles neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta, where customers not only listen to records, but they also choose them, play them and make them spin. In Vorágine, music is not the background, it is the star. “I like people to feel welcome. It’s a place where you can come to draw, to chat, to participate in workshops or simply to listen to good music,” he says. His collection, which has been curated in stores from Berlin, London, Santiago and New York, is danceable and atmospheric. One

of his gems—A New Love by The Miracles Club—is an album that he found many years ago after a long search, never opened in an antique store located 20 minutes from his home in NYC. “Love and Death by Ebo Taylor is the song that defines my bar. It showed me a very different musical landscape, and it still has a special place in my life. Every time I put it on, I feel like I am connecting with something deep,” Salvador shares.

THE BAR WITH THE SOUL OF TURNTABLES • EL BAR CON ALMA DE TORNAMESA:

SONOMAN

@sonoman_pv

PABLO LÓPEZ and José Romo, partners at Sonoman, share a similar idea: “Although we wanted to play good music in the bar, our real intention was to have people play it themselves.” Inspired by their diverse tastes, ranging from rock and reggae to cumbia and jazz, they imagined a place where vinyl would be the central meeting point.

“Sonoman was born entirely around music,” they explain. Its name comes from an Argentine comic from the sixties, where the superhero has sonic powers. Then, a happy coincidence—they

discovered that Soda Stereo had a song with that title. “What better name for a turntable bar?” At Sonoman, the records originally came as family inheritances and donations from friends, merging into an eclectic collection that combines the danceable with the contemplative. “People love being able to choose and play an album themselves. Seeing a vinyl spin has something magical about it. It reminds you that music can also be touched.” Located in the Versalles neighborhood, one of the flagship drinks in this bar is the Playerito, made with natural coconut water, lemon and chopped coconut. “It is very simple, but perfect for the heat. It hydrates, refreshes and has a very clean taste,” says José. And if Sonoman were a song, it would probably be... Sonoman. “It was a simply perfect,” they say with a laugh.

Sonoman. “Fue simplemente perfecto”, afirman entre risas.

Nidia Anaya & Omar Cuarenta, owners of / propietarios de Ritual Moods Records.

WHERE LISTENING TO AN ALBUM IS PART OF A RITUAL DONDE ESCUCHAR UN DISCO ES PARTE DE UN RITUAL:

RITUAL MOODS RECORDS THE VISION OF the marriage between Omar Cuarenta and Nidia Anaya is complementary and deeply personal. At Ritual Moods Records, vinyl is intertwined with emotional well-being and introspection. “It always bothered me having to go to stores where you only dig around between records. If you wanted to sit down or have a drink, it was complicated,” Omar recalls. From that, the idea was born for this store that offers vinyl records, non-alcoholic drinks and a curated collection of vintage clothes.

Si querías sentarte o tomar algo, era complicado”, recuerda Omar. De ahí nació esta

“Listening to music is also a ritual,” he says, and the phrase is not a metaphor—it is a philosophy. Here, customers can choose a record, put it on the turntable, and stay to listen to it in its entirety while sipping an adaptogen-infused lemonade or a shot of CBD. “It’s happened that someone has bought their first vinyl record without having a turntable at home, so they come and listen to it here.” One of the jewels in its collection is Trans-Europe Express by Kraftwerk. “My wife’s father gave it to me. It is an album with personal and cultural history,” Omar shares. If they had to define their store with a song, they would choose Incendium, by Quantic. “It mixes electronic rhythms with Latin sounds, with real instruments and vocal collaborations. It has that spirit of mixture, of contemplation... like what we are looking for here,” says Nidia.

Adam Bateman, owner of / propietario de Al Filo Bar.

A LIVING ROOM WITH A TURNTABLE UNA SALA DE ESTAR CON TORNAMESA:

AL FILO BAR ADAM BATEMAN founded Al Filo Bar in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle with a clear intention—to create community. And in vinyl, he says, he found the best vehicle to achieve it. “Unlike Spotify, where you have all the music in the world, with this format you have to think differently, within the options that exist.” “Some nights we don’t have DJs or live music, just people choosing records. Those evenings have a special vibe because the customers are the ones who set the atmosphere of the bar.” The first vinyl he had in his hands was Led Zeppelin IV. “There was a myth about the song Stairway to Heaven, that if you played it in backwards you would hear satanic messages. It was a very tactile experience.” Later, his sister gave him a Lady Gaga album. “I wasn’t a fan of hers, but I’ve put it on here several times and now I like it. Also, it became special to me because of our relationship.”

@alfilobar

Te obliga a estar presente”, reflexiona José. Omar asiente: “Aquí no solo se compran discos. Se tocan, se sienten, se escuchan”.

Salvador adds, “I like to see young people surprised by how wonderful this is. Older people also come in and get very excited about the albums, because they remind them of their youth. Vinyl is a generational meeting point.”

“I want people to feel free with my work. I want them to be able to connect with a memory, emotion or moment from their lives.”

FROM A YOUNG AGE, Alondra Muca knew that art would be her most natural form of expression. Under this artistic name (a playful combination of the first syllables of her surnames), Alondra Murua Carrillo created an alter ego that allows her to freely and sensitively explore the realms of the real and the imaginary.

Muca studied Visual Arts for Photographic Expression at the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC). However, painting and sculpture soon claimed center stage in her practice, becoming the core of her work. Paradoxically, photography remained a hobby—always present to document her creative process.

“Rather than simply transmitting a message, I seek to awaken emotions in each piece. For me, that is enough. Everything is valid.”

WITH A STEADY stride, Estrella Landin is establishing herself within the emerging artistic scene of our destination. She is currently studying Visual Arts for Plastic Expression at the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC), but her passion for creation began in childhood, inspired by her mother, who also painted. Although her work stems from personal experiences, she seeks to transcend them through a style that combines realism with dreamlike and fantastical elements. Born and raised in Puerto Vallarta, the sea is a constant presence in her work, as she incorporates tropical symbols and atmospheres that reflect her identity.

Her creative process begins with writing: she first captures concepts and ideas in a notebook, then translates them into sketches, and finally brings them to the canvas. Her preferred medium is acrylic, which she describes as forgiving, flexible, and accessible. Landin has already achieved significant milestones at just 20 years old: she won first place in the Tracemos el CUC contest with an 8-by-11-meter wall painting and has exhibited at Arte Vallarta Museo and Art Walk galleries. In addition, she has participated in several art auctions.

JORGE AYALA

“People connect with my work when they see a line or shape that makes them think or feel something. That moment is unique.”

VALLARTA PAINTER Jorge Ayala has managed to balance his personal projects with his commercial work by operating under two creative identities: Troglodita, which encompasses urban works and collaborations with local brands; and Cangrejo, which involves creating wall paintings to decorate residences and hotels. His style is characterized by strong brushstrokes and an aesthetic reminiscent of Impressionism, where the lines and structure of the work are clearly visible. He enjoys working with locally produced oil and acrylics, which enable him to create his own shades as he paints. This gives him the freedom to adjust the colors as the work progresses.

With studies in Visual Arts for Plastic Expression at the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUC), Ayala nurtures his creative process by spending time in specialty coffee shops with a notebook, or by immersing himself in the natural surroundings of our destination. Growing up in the city and witnessing its changes, along with interacting with people from around the world, has broadened his perspective. Ayala is currently focused on developing critical and disruptive pieces, directly applying paint to surfaces without a preliminary sketch.

The Dock Local Roots with Flavors from the Sea • Raíces Locales y Sabores del Mar

Mar y Tierra. 40 | OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2025 | vallartalifestyles.com

THE DOCK offers a culinary experience that is deeply rooted in the flavors of regional seafood and the freshness of local ingredients. Opened three years ago by owners Emily Massel and Francisco Godínez, the restaurant is located right on the main beach in Sayulita, Riviera Nayarit’s most renowned surf town.

Far from partaking in fleeting culinary trends or gourmet pretensions, the restaurant’s concept is presented with authenticity. “The Dock is a project that has grown piece by piece from listening to people’s preferences and respecting the essence of our surroundings,” explains Emily.

What started as a modest beach stand, with a few tables and a makeshift bar, has now been transformed into an attractive restaurant with seating for 164 diners, offering the patron’s choice between its cozy terrace or the beach club. The growth has been organic, true to the philosophy of its founders, in creating a space that reflects the community and the environment.

The Dock is the culmination of Emily and Francisco’s shared love and knowledge of Sayulita, as well as their travels, testing, and most of all, their passion for authentic flavors. “We learned by fishing and cooking together and trying different combinations. For us, food has always been a way to connect,” they share. Without a doubt, that connection between them and with nature and their diners is what makes this restaurant exceptional.

A Polo Lesson in San Pancho El Deporte de los Reyes: Una Clase de Polo en San Pancho What would we discover? We were not entirely sure. To some, polo is just a distant idea of horses galloping at full speed over a grass court with riders performing graceful movements to try to hit a ball. ¿Con qué podríamos encontrarnos? No había mucha certeza.

But that morning, as the San Pancho, Nayarit, sunshine was just beginning to tint the palms a beautiful golden color, we set off to find out. About fifteen minutes before 9:00am, we were on the way with the GPS telling us that we should drive briefly over a jungle road. When we arrived, we passed a discreet security hut and, suddenly, everything changed. In front of us there was a large garden that we had to cross to reach the lobby of Tierra Tropical, a polo club that was founded in 2001 with the aim of promoting equestrian sports. We were received by Roberto González Gracida, the director of Polo and Equestrian, who shook our hands with unexpected warmth. We soon realized that, beyond his experience as an accomplished rider, he has a contagious passion for sharing the world of polo. “We want everyone to feel welcome here, even if they have never ridden before. This is ideal for those who want to try something different,” he told us as we walked together across the terrace overlooking the main court. Next to him was Adrián García, coordinator of Polo and Equestrian and the instructor that day. As soon as we started talking about the program, his words outlined the structure of what we were going to experience: “Everything starts from the ground. The first step is to learn how to hit well with the right technique. Then the horse will come.”

And so, it was.

Tierra Tropical Polo Club.

They gave us the required tools to play polo: mallets (light but firm) and balls. In a small, shaded area, lined up like enthusiastic novices, we began to imitate Adrián’s movements. Half swing, clean shot, no unnecessary force. “It’s all in the wrist and the rhythm. If you learn to do it correctly now, it will be much easier on

the horse later,” he assured us. The first blows were clumsy, but with increasing concentration, we gradually understood the movement. Then came the moment we were waiting for—riding.

Adrián García, coordinator of / coordinador de Polo e Hípica.

We walked towards the stables, where the horses were already waiting for us with their patient eyes, ears attentive to the slightest sound and their manes carefully brushed and combed. Adrián explained to us that they worked with horses specially trained for beginners—“bombproof horses,” he called them. “They are noble, very calm. They are used to teaching. They will give you the confidence you need.” Riding was, for some of us, the first emotional test. The initial nerve gave way as soon as we felt the stability of the animal under our body. Everything changed in an instant: breathing became deeper, the body adapted to the cadence of the step and the world (that of emails, pending interviews and phone calls) was blurred. It was only us, the horses and the moment. We started on the sand track. We learned to walk and turn, to use our legs as an extension of our will. Roberto watched us attentively, correcting details with a smile. “The one who rides the best is the one who learns the fastest,” he told us, and his phrase floated like a mantra. Then it was time to combine everything: riding and hitting. We went to the main grass court, where the balls were ready. Now, the effort to keep our balance, to hold the mallet accurately, and calculate the angle and momentum became more challenging. But with each attempt, something new was discovered.

When a teammate hit her first clean shot, the dry sound of the ball moving forward drew spontaneous applause.

We said goodbye with the promise of returning. Some were already talking about scheduling their next class. Others, more discreet, had a mixture of exhaustion and enthusiasm in their eyes that only an authentic experience creates. Polo had surprised us not only as a sport, but also as a noble, refined and profoundly human ritual. Whoever experiences it, understands it: there is something in the first gallop, in the mallet in the air and in the silence of the countryside that stays forever.

It was at that moment that we understood what Adrián had told us at the beginning: the most exciting moment is when students realize they are already playing polo. Because yes, we were doing it. Perhaps without the speed of professionals, but with the same dedication and joy.

After an hour, which really seemed much less to us, we returned to the stables. Getting off was almost a shame. The horses received fresh water, and we received a brief review of what we learned. We posed for a group photo with wide smiles, dusty boots and fiery looks.

While we were having an iced coffee on the terrace, with the green field extending in front of us, we asked Roberto why he thinks polo has such an ability to seduce so quickly. He, with the serenity of someone who has lived this sport all his life, answered: “Because it is complete. It connects you with the horse, with your body, with nature. And because it demands discipline, but also humility.”

With an impeccable collection of pieces handmade by indigenous communities from across various regions of Mexico, the shop embodies an elegance that is deeply rooted in authenticity. Witari Hotel Boutique

Amapas 25, San Pancho, Nayarit

IN SAN PANCHO, Nayarit, life glides by at a leisurely and almost ceremonial pace. There, between the lush jungle and the ocean waves, one will find Witari, a boutique hotel designed not only for lodging, but for healing. The name comes from the Wixárika language and means “rainwater,” a name that defines the spirit of the hotel from its very origin: purity, fluidity and rebirth. Each of its fifteen rooms is inspired by a sacred symbol of the Huichol pilgrimage: corn, fire, snake, or deer. Far from any attempt at aesthetic cultural appropriation, the hotel proposes a respectful and moving immersion in the ancestral roots of the region. Esteban Hermosillo, general manager of Witari Hotel Boutique, puts it clearly: “We want our guests to reconnect with the earth, with silence and with something greater than themselves.” The design, by the offices AIF (Guadalajara) and CAUCE (San Pancho), creates a serene

The natural surroundings—where the singing of birds replaces the rhythm of life in the village—is an essential part of the experience. “Mutua” is the hotel’s restaurant, which adds another sensory layer to this concept of holistic well-being. With corn playing the leading role in the concept and flavors that intertwine Asian and South American influences, each dish becomes a contemporary celebration of Mexico’s culinary soul. Live music, a rooftop pool and a team that is attentive to the individual needs of each guest completes the experience in this quiet place, ideal for those looking to disconnect from the busy world without sacrificing sophistication.

COMPOSTELA The Charm and Beauty of a Historic Magical Town • El Encanto y Belleza de un Pueblo Mágico Histórico

FROM PUERTO VALLARTA, the road to Compostela is not just a route traced on a map, but an experience that invites travelers to discover the charm of a destination that seems to have stopped in time. It is only 145 kilometers away (a two-hour drive from the outskirts of Bucerías), but what you experience on the journey is much more than a road trip—it is a transition between tropical modernity and the historic legacy of one of the oldest cities in western Mexico.

The adventure begins as Banderas Bay is left behind. At this time of year, Federal Highway 200 is verdant—trees hug the road forming natural tunnels and vegetation overflows into intense greens that surround every curve. The scent of the damp earth and thick foliage growing on the edge of the asphalt fills the air. It is impossible not to slow down, open the window and let yourself be enveloped by the wind moving among the branches.

Every curve is a hint that Compostela is getting closer. When you finally reach the heart of this magical town in Nayarit, the first thing you perceive is its stillness—a calm that is not empty, but full of echoes, history and resonances of the past. Founded in 1532 as “Villa de Santiago de Galicia de Compostela de Indias,” this town was the first capital of the kingdom of New Galicia, a vast region that encompassed the current states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Aguascalientes and parts of Zacatecas, Sinaloa and San Luis Potosí. Its name, which means “field of stars”, is a nod to the Galician Compostela, but here, in the Mexican version, the stars are also sown in its cobblestone streets, its historic architecture and the leisurely pace of its people. Compostela is not discovered in one quick glance but slowly revealed in every corner. The historic center invites you to walk with your senses attentive. The Parish Church of Santo Santiago Apóstol, with its sober façade and deep history, is the spiritual heart of the town. From its altar, the figure of the Lord of Mercy (whom residents attribute to having saved them from a cholera epidemic in 1850) summons pilgrimages every December that fill the streets. Here, faith and history coexist, intertwine and celebrate.

From the outskirts of Bucerías to Compostela, a highway stretches approximately 130 kilometers, with four toll booths.

Very close to the parish, the Regional Museum of Compostela offers one of the most valuable surprises of the trip. Although it may go unnoticed, inside there is an archaeological treasure of 685 pieces that narrate the life and beliefs of the cultures that inhabited this land prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. Its display cases exhibit mostly objects that were found in the Shaft Tombs: anthropomorphic sculptures, ceremonial faces, obsidian objects and clay utensils. Everything speaks of

This history, which is intertwined between myth and reality, creates a halo of magic. Walking through the corridors with Doric pillars, looking out over the old stables, intuiting the life that was brewing in the cellars—everything is an exercise in imagination and sensitivity. The small chapel inside the former hacienda, where Sunday masses are still offered, keeps the connection between the past and the present alive, and conjoins the sacred and the everyday. Compostela is also meant to be savored. In its markets, inns and small restaurants you will find cuisine that preserves the flavors of yesteryear. But it is in its coffee plantations where one of its most unique products is found. In the Sierra

Y promete volver.
