KNOWLEDGE OF FINE ARTS DESIGN VLK understands the correlation of the arts with the benefits of student achievement. We recognize achievement as personal success, satisfaction, student agency, and engagement. We believe that the earlier children can be exposed to opportunities, the better decisions they make about discovering their passions. Exploration is crucial to the learning process in general, but specific consideration of the arts can create a pathway that is cultivated for a lifetime. When students are provided a pathway for the arts to be an expected central part of their educational experience, the skill levels they acquire at each interval of learning increases their knowledge, hones their proficiency, and accentuates their efficacy. Students bring motivation to the classroom every day, but how educators tap into those motivations is the key to personal growth and success. When students bring motivations associated with the arts to school, a powerful opportunity exists. In a learning environment designed to specifically foster education and the arts, students not only learn academic fine arts content, but they also experience the richness of the process. As students continue through grade levels and campuses, the learning environments that support the arts should evolve with them. Primary level experiences need a developmentally appropriate environment, and by the time students experience the arts at a high school level, the specialized areas that facilitate their instruction and performance should reveal the same levels of expertise that students have been working to demonstrate. Additionally, the environment should also support the community with an opportunity to encounter the talents acquired by students in a space conducive to performance and display. Space planning to adequately support each specific area of the fine arts is crucial to the delivery of the learning and performance experience. Consideration of both the performing and visual arts must be studied in order to create a balanced approach to the arts, given the expectations of the school district. Dance, theatre, art, orchestra, and band all require a thoughtful process with a team of experts who understand the connections to students, their curricula, and the spaces in which they must use as their classrooms and performance areas. KNOWLEDGE OF ADDITIONS/RENOVATIONS VLK understands the difficulty and care that must be taken to plan and execute renovation and addition projects. Renovations and additions must be designed, detailed, and constructed to meet school schedules, holidays, materials shipping, and installation time frames. During the design of renovation projects, it is imperative that the design team utilizes available resources to become knowledgeable of the existing facility, review existing drawings, site visits, and have discussions with client administrative and maintenance staff to gather information on the condition of the facility. We do this by diligently scheduling site visits and staff meetings at the very beginning of the project to maximize our database of knowledge about the facility, especially as it applies to building systems. Thorough construction documents coordinated with an effective phasing plan will be the keystone to success during construction. Our thorough discovery and building investigation, carefully coordinated and detailed documents, and communication with the contractors will minimize the inevitable, unforeseen conditions that arise and potentially add costs during construction. We monitor construction progress closely to confirm that the individual phasing plan completion dates are being met to avoid a domino effect of multiple milestone dates being missed. Most importantly, we work in tandem with the contractors during construction as they progress through the building to be sure system specifications and detailing developed during discovery is confirmed and contiguous.

PHASED WORK ON OCCUPIED CAMPUSES One of the critical factors to a successful renovation and capital improvements project is proper scheduling. To minimize the amount of time that a construction team needs to be on campus (in turn minimizing the cost of general conditions), work must occur during the school year. We work collaboratively with the construction team to phase this work so there is no disruption to instruction and testing during hours that students are in the building. Key factors we consider are: • Work that can occur after hours effectively • Coordination with client security personnel, access control, and energy management for coordinated systems switch over and down time, as well as secured, managed access of construction personnel into the building after hours • Zero cross-pollination of construction workers with students without strict supervision • Secured temporary egress so all emergency exits and typical school circulation is maintained • Separation of construction staging from the rest of campus • Phased moves of temporary portables • Zero work on testing days are included in schedule • Regular communication with school client personnel, including the principal at the school for updates on construction activities • Carefully planned switch over of electrical and HVAC components so there is no down time during school hours • Replacement of schools on occupied school sites • CTE renovations and renovations 18

KNOWLEDGE OF ATHLETIC DESIGN VLK’s athletic facility experience ranges from Texas high school athletics to the Southeastern Conference Universities. We have taken on many specialty athletic facilities during our 41 years of experience, many of which have been one off facilities which are considered to be the best in their field. Creating district-wide athletic facilities creates unique challenges not typical of educational athletic facilities. These facilities are used for educational programs, athletic training, and competitions of varying scale, and are utilized by the community. The varying uses and different user groups create special challenges in the organization of the facility. The facility must be organized to allow use of specific areas, but must be secured to prohibit entry into areas not being used. Special attention is required to create flexible, secure, and adaptable facilities to support athletic teams engaged in competition and spectators attending events. The overall facility must flex or adapt to a changing special needs when large events are held in the venue. And the facility must adapt to allow community use of select portions of the facility. Competition events require a specific understanding of the space requirements of typical team facilities and the unique requirements of venues for athletic competition. Site planning must accommodate buses for competitions and private vehicles for participants and spectators. Service access and staging areas are needed to provide for special equipment needs and to provide for event staging. Specific program needs guide the design of facilities to house sports teams. Typical team accommodations include locker and team meeting space, short term equipment storage, training areas, and office and locker space for coaching staff. In contrast, the team facilities for a district completion facility include these typical spaces, but may need to adapt to the changing needs of the

facility. For example, four locker areas might meet the needs for many competitions, but a larger competition might require team spaces to accommodate more teams. On past projects, we have used operable walls to partition locker rooms to provide flexibility and increase the capacity for “team” spaces. Weight rooms and Training rooms in a shared use facility create unique challenges in creating a secure, safe environment that can be monitored and controlled with a minimal staff. Gymnastics, wrestling, and natatoriums have extensive storage requirements for sports equipment. The placement and access to this equipment storage is critical for the efficient set up for competition, training, special events or practice. We understand how to create a simple, secure solution to these storage needs. Arenas and competition venues present unique challenges that require an understanding of the special needs of the individual sports and the challenges of staging large events with multiple teams and fan bases. In addition, an understanding of how to design an arena requires special knowledge of sight lines for stadium seating and the special needs of event staging spaces. The goal in the design of a functional arena or competition space is to create a flexible venue that meets present needs and anticipates the challenges of unanticipated uses in the future.

FIELDHOUSE EXPERIENCE Denton Independent School District Denton High School Athletic Facilities

Full Architectural Services: The fieldhouses are a part of the Denton High School Replacement project that had a total construction cost of $168 million, with over 500,000 sf of building. The four field houses were strategically placed on the site to be adjacent to key athletic fields enhancing the flow of the outdoor campus. The west and east field houses are separated by a 60-yard practice field that is on axis with the main building and its courtyard. There is a view from inside the main building from the front entrance, that extends through the central library, student commons, outdoor courtyard and 60-yard practice field to the football field and track. Adjacent to the football field and track are the north and south field houses. These two buildings connect to an overhead canopy that also serves as an entrance into the softball and baseball complex. Each of the four field houses serves the high school of approximately 2,400 students. Many of these students participate in football, softball, soccer, track, and cross country. Some of the amenities included in the field houses are strength and conditioning weight room, prevention and rehabilitation athletic training and rehabilitation room, and a multi-use meeting room.

KNOWLEDGE OF MIDDLE SCHOOL DESIGN VLK’s approach to middle school design begins with understanding the beliefs, goals, and visions of the district. Students thrive in a healthy and thought-provoking environment. An exterior facade that responds to its context, stimulating and comforting interiors, natural daylight, indoor air quality, and safety and security are factors that must be considered. As students transition from elementary to middle school a delicate shift occurs. Social peer groups and community interaction become a vital part of their academic journey. With busy schedules and higher academic expectations, considerations for space must motivate and empower adolescents, while also focusing on individual learning needs. As such, we encourage student voice during VLK | LAUNCH®, our community planning process. Our goal is to create environments where kids feel emotionally safe and academically inspired, resulting in a sense of pride and belonging.

KNOWLEDGE OF HIGH SCHOOL DESIGN VLK understands the critical needs and roles that high schools play in a districts’ educational delivery system. We are VERY comfortable with the complexity and the scale of development required for high school campuses. High schools have been compared to designing a city because they will most likely involve multiple buildings, multiple points of infrastructure service, and multiple types of facilities. We treat the athletic design as importantly as the academic; the fine arts as importantly as the library resource center because all are essential to a student’s high school experience. In addition, we understand how important it is to design for the future and to provide a solution that responds to the community's values. The life of a high school facility (75-100 years) is significantly longer than elementary and middle schools. VLK approaches design by: •

Design for flexibility for cost effective renovation, expansion, infrastructure enhancement.

•

Create a buffer between the building and loop road for building expansion.

•

Design for greatest envelope performance and longevity. This involves material selection and attention to detail with flashings and joint treatment to reduce water intrusion. You must have strong “bones”.

•

Do it right the first time. Pay attention to decisions that will translate for the entire life of a building. Consider detailing for the least invasive life cycle is not material replacement such as roofing and flooring.

•

Build into the initial design features such as glass window walls or low-cost veneers, so demolitions for future expansion can be least costly and invasive. Our significant high school renovation experience has provided us with insight into the techniques for providing flexibility.

Design for low cost, simple, and effective maintenance to improve long term performance. Examples: polished concrete floors, easy access to heat pumps from mezzanines or mechanical rooms versus above ceiling, the ability to physically access mechanical equipment for replacement. 40

Fast track design and construction delivery •

Our significant experience with fast growth school districts has provided us with the skills to deliver the design in alignment with fast tracked construction; grading packages, foundation and utility packages, structural packages, and building packages. This provides with the most compressed delivery and saves significant money in high inflationary periods.

•

We can provide a master plan for completion to align with financing availability and growth.

We have a broad spectrum of experts that contribute to the design of the complex functions of a high school; science, security, technology, theater design, advanced career and technology labs, athletics, food service, branding, graphics, interior design, furnishings, and libraries/resource centers. Our team is diverse and experienced. The design and construction of high schools is a threeto-four-year process, and it requires an intense and prolonged assignment of personnel. We commit to continued participation by all of our team of experts through design AND construction. We zone functions that support the multiple needs for compartmentalization for after-hours use. We design to support professional development and teacher collaboration.

HIGH SCHOOL DESIGN

Design for Flexibility, the lifespan of a high school is 75-100 years.

Fast track design and construction delivery to get ahead of inflation

We understand the complex functions of a high school. Our team of experts is diverse and experienced in all areas.

Design to maximize school identity, integrate school colors, mascot, branding during the project, rather than as an afterthought.

Designing for Community, through the creation of compartmentalized spaces that can be used after-hours.

Supporting professional development and cross communication for teachers and staff.

We understand the variety of learners that will come through a high school, and design to meet the unique needs of each student.

FIRM'S APPROACH Principal-Led Projects Throughout VLK's entire existence, we have held two basic core values: we strive to provide excellent client service that leads to long-term client relationships and we utilize a Principal-led approach to our projects. Principals are held in high esteem within our firm and their leadership is essential to our success. No manner of strategy, marketing, business development, process improvement, software, or planned growth can replace the face-to-face relationship and accountability of a Principal to our clients. Tim Kunz, Managing Principal for Northside ISD is: • Accountable to Northside ISD for all project success; budget, schedule, design, marketing, staffing, client relationship, consultant relationship, contractor relationship, media relationship, and jurisdiction relationship • Accountable to the Northside ISD board of trustees, superintendent, administration, facilities, campus, and community for project success and each of these individuals' job success Michael Martinez, Principal-In-Charge for Northside ISD, is: • Accountable to Northside ISD for the day-today responsibility in providing constant, daily communication with your planning and construction teams on the status of our project work, whether in the design phases or in construction • Accountable for leading our entire design team and consultant team, assuring that all aspects of Northside ISD’s goals and standards are reflected in each facet of our team’s work Educational Design Expertise VLK has provided the highest level of client service based upon the sincere desire to build and maintain long-term relationships. Since the founding of our firm, our team’s primary focus is and has been educational design. Our team has extensive experience that is specifically dedicated to the design of new learning environments through new facilities, additions, and lifecycle renovation projects. Our team understands the critical need for, and role played by each school and support facility in a district’s educational delivery system, and we will provide the expertise needed to assist you in meeting your objectives.

Delivered Value Through Design With decades of delivering professional services, we realize it is imperative to provide value to our clients’ projects. We are eager to roll up our sleeves to assist those driven to improve educational opportunities as well as those created by community growth. Through our collaborative process, VLK’s designs can play a role in reducing M&O costs, re-imagining student learning spaces to enhance student opportunities, and attracting talent that leads to teacher retention. The solutions that our VLK team provides to your district will be specific and unique to Northside ISD and will embrace and reflect your vision. Strength of Team and Thought Leadership Our team is highly qualified in the design of all components that comprise state-of-the-art learning environments, such as next-generation academic learning spaces, safe and flexible laboratories, innovative performing arts venues, UIL-relevant athletic training and competition facilities, real-world career and technology laboratories, and advanced technology media centers that will provide the students of Northside ISD with world-class opportunities. Because each area of instruction is uniquely complex, our design approach is to assign skilled and knowledgeable specialists to lead each component of the design, so that each receives the same level of developmental focus and thought leadership. Educational Planning The Educational Planning team at VLK is comprised of educators, who are experts in curriculum and instruction, able to inform design and connect the district’s instructional desires to the project. Our process begins with VLK | CURATION®, where educational conversations take place in order to produce a clear vision for design. CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION Job-Site Visit Frequency Our dedicated Construction Administrator visits job sites at least once a week during the construction phase, as well as other members of our team. For some schedulesensitive projects, such as summer renovations, this will be much more often. Our approach is to ensure that our presence on site is as often as needed in order to allow the project to proceed in a timely manner. Pre-Construction Meetings Our Construction Administrator, along with team members, will conduct pre-construction meetings for appropriate subcontractors at intervals appropriate to the work. We place special emphasis on not only meeting with individual trades but conducting meetings for multiple trades involved in the more critical or complicated elements in order to discuss the necessary coordination of these trades long before issues arise in the field. Construction Administrator Involvement Our construction administration is a team approach involving Principal-In-Charge Michael Martinez, the Project Designer, the Project Manager, and led and managed by the Construction Administrator. We believe that this allows construction administrators to truly represent the goals and desires of the owner with an eye for long-term performance and contract requirements. Each construction administrator can office anywhere, with a full complement of real-time technology and access to our web-hosted Autodesk Forma project management system, so that decisions can be expedited. Our construction administration begins with understanding the contract documents, the owner’s expectations, and the contractor’s agreement. Foundational documents are required prior to the first pay application. Long-established procedures and policies are put in place so that each and every project is approached universally. All communication and directions are documented and distributed to the relevant parties. Conformed documents are utilized throughout to ensure that all parties are referencing real-time information. Our Construction Administrator will visit a job site a minimum of once a week, but as often as needed, based upon construction activities. The design team consultants will make site visits as needed to monitor activities related to their scope of work.

electronic development and documentation of project communications with the owner, construction manager, and our consultants. The design team members maintain email and internet capabilities to enhance communication between the design team and the owner. The owner is copied on all communications documenting project progress and decisions made through the project management database we utilize. These communications come across in email but can also be accessed through the internet. This greatly reduces the amount of time it takes for the construction team to receive answers, required paperwork, and provides full transparency for the project. All documentation, communication threads, and file exchanges on Autodesk Forma will be archived at the end of the project in comprehensive searchable digital files. Quality Assurance For VLK, the essence of quality assurance requires thorough documentation of project requirements and decision making, timely dissemination to the entire project team, and confirmation that these requirements and decisions are incorporated into the contract documents. Regular project team design review and coordination meetings are scheduled throughout the development of the design and construction documents to facilitate the QA process. Additionally, our Quality Assurance Director, will work with the Principal-In-Charge and the design team to review the design of the project as it progresses to ensure the requirements of the client are being met. Documentation from previous meetings is reviewed for compliance with decisions and directives from the client and users. We understand that each client may have specific needs for their project, so VLK will tailor our QA process as best meets the needs of a given client. At the completion of construction documents, a full-size set of documents including specifications are provided to a project architect in our office who did not work on the project. This experienced architect reviews the documents sheet by sheet, checking dimensions, detail references, coordination with consultant documents, thoroughness of detailing, material applications, specification requirements, and constructability, etc.

Tab 3 | Project Approach Safety & Security Designing for school safety is woven into all the decisions we make as architects. Rest assured that every line we place on the page and every conversation we have is tempered by what is best for our students. This is a complex and multi-faceted problem that can’t be solved by metal detectors alone. Let’s move forward and start discussing modes of prevention while we continue to perfect a safe and secure infrastructure. Addressing Mental Health in our Schools VLK’s Best Practices for School Safety & Security are tailored to each community, with the realization and understanding that the students’, staff’s, parents’ and your community’s sense of security in their schools is a top priority.

Your First Responders are included in design meetings and building walkthroughs during and at the completion of construction so that they know best how to respond and what they will need in the event of an emergency at your campuses.

Our practices are scaffolded by our participation on the Texas Society of Architects School Safety & Security Workgroup, Governor Abbott’s recommendations, and the Texas State School and Safety Center.

54

VLK | Uncompromising Excellence

The design of engaging spaces, in which students feel comfortable and excited to participate, is Job One. Designing spaces that support a schoolwide culture where all students feel valued and a part of something larger than themselves. Designing mental health counseling suites that are informally available to all students can improve access and reduce the stigma against seeking help. Designing spaces that foster individualized learning and support unique learning styles improves engagement and can reduce stress.

The introduction of natural light into interior spaces has been shown to improve health and performance. Sunlight triggers the release of serotonin in the brain, enhancing our mood and overall sense of happiness. Without adequate exposure to sunlight, serotonin levels sink, which can lead to irritability, fatigue, and depression. “Light is essential for our health and well-being. Ensuring that we receive adequate levels at the appropriate times of day benefits our alertness, mood, productivity, sleep pattern, and many aspects of our physiology.” – Dr. Victoria Revell, Survey Clinical Research Centre In schools, design features such as large windows and transparent walls connecting indoor and outdoor spaces not only let in more natural light, but serve to link students with their community both within and beyond the facility.

Designing schools that break down large populations into more intimate communities allow a teacher to personally connect with each student.
