Un étudiant de l’Université d’Hasselt a découvert une technologie permettant de localiser sa position dans le métro. C’est une bonne alternative aux systèmes nécessitant les signaux GPS ou même internet, rarement accessibles en sous-sol. L’étudiant limbourgeois, Thomas Stockx, voulait trouver une solution à l’absence de GPS dans les métros. Sans réseau sous-terre, il était impossible de se localiser et il était donc facile de se tromper de direction.

Son application, Subway Positioning System, utilise des capteurs basiques, présents dans tous les smartphones, et les connecte aux horaires des entreprises de transports en commun. De cette manière, l’utilisateur peut savoir exactement où il se situe et combien de temps lui sera nécessaire avant d’arriver à destination. Cette technologie a déjà été testée avec succès tant en Belgique, qu’en Allemagne, en Grande-Bretagne et aux Etats-Unis. Thomas Stockx ira présenter son application au monde de l’entreprise en novembre à Dallas, un lancement commercial pourrait suivre.
