113 SHOOTING FOR THE STARS
Stephen Thompson is a transplanted Irishman who has lived in Sint Maarten since 1970, when he made his first visit to the island and never left. Owner of the Guavaberry Emporium—purveryors of a popular local rum liquor—in Philipsburg, Thompson is also an avid photographer who is seldom without a camera, often a Canon 5D2. His photographs range from people to pets (he has five dogs who are happy to pose whenever they are asked). He also loves astronomy and is a dedicated stargazer who takes heavenly images of the skies at night.
From his home in Pointe Blanche, Thompson can see inside the harbor of Gustavia in Saint Barth, which often serves as the background for his images of the stars, grounding the photographs and giving them a specific location. His celestial images are long time exposures, some of which show the curvature of the earth beneath the skies. They also show how the earth is spinning in relation to the stars, as pinpoints of light in the sky become divergent lines. The best photos are taken on the clearest nights, without a single cloud to spoil the view, and a maximum contrast between the sky and the stars. The only light pollution Thompson allows in these images is that of Gustavia, where the haze of light over the town localizes his images, and makes them a part of the magic that is Saint Barth.
