COMMERCIAL NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

OBJECTIVE Design a mixed-use headquarters on the West Coast for the National Geographic Society that aligns with their mission of exploration, education, and environmental stewardship. The design should include public-facing areas such as a café, exhibition space, and retail store, along with private office spaces for a diverse professional team. The goal was to create an environment that fosters curiosity, collaboration, and storytelling, while also reflecting National Geographic’s global identity and commitment to sustainability.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Located in the Presidio of San Francisco, 34 Graham Street is reimagined as a vibrant regional headquarters for National Geographic. The design concept, Digital Earth, blends natural forms and high-tech systems, drawing inspiration from satellite imagery, topography, and organic textures. The project prioritizes connection, transparency, and sustainability. Natural materials, biophilic elements, and sculptural lighting create an immersive environment that reflects National Geographic’s global mission and environmental values. FSC-certified woods, recycled materials, and lowemission finishes support LEED and WELL standards, while bold custom elements — including a topographic ceiling feature and a dynamic plant wall — express a seamless dialogue between technology and nature.

LOBBY The lobby sets the tone for the Digital Earth concept, creating an open, light-filled space that invites exploration. Its layout connects seamlessly to the retail store, exhibit space, and café, encouraging a natural flow of movement. Materials like FSCcertified wood, slate tile, and a vibrant plant wall ground the space in natural textures, while sustainable finishes and recycled content support the project’s environmental goals. A sculptural reception desk and layered lighting inspired by topographic forms add a subtle digital edge, blending organic warmth with modern innovation.

RETAIL STORE The retail store extends the open flow of the lobby, offering a bright, inviting space where visitors can explore merchandise tied to themes of discovery and nature. A dramatic quartz countertop with warm, organic veining anchors the main cashier area, bringing a refined natural element into the space. Flexible display fixtures and illuminated shelving maintain a clean, modern feel, while sustainable choices — including FSCcertified wood and recycled materials — support the project’s environmental goals. Expansive glass walls flood the store with natural light, creating an engaging, approachable atmosphere.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC || 7

CAFE The café is designed as a centerpiece for connection, relaxation, and environmental innovation. Framed entirely by glass walls, the space offers sweeping views of both the exhibit and the surrounding neighborhood, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. Sculptural lighting becomes a defining feature: mycelium pendant lights introduce organic warmth with biodegradable materials, while striking bionic chandeliers filled with living algae actively purify the air, merging design with function. Sustainable elements, including FSC-certified woods, recycled surfaces, and low-VOC finishes, reinforce the commitment to wellness and environmental stewardship. Light, texture, and transparency work together to create a café experience that feels both rooted in nature and forward-thinking.

8 || NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

WORKSPACES The workspaces are designed to support focus, flexibility, and well-being, blending individual workstations with collaborative zones. A mix of open desks, private offices, and casual meeting areas allows employees to choose environments that best suit their needs. Natural textures, acoustic wood slat panels, and soft sustainable carpeting create a calm, grounded atmosphere that encourages productivity. Large windows bring in abundant daylight, reducing the need for artificial lighting, while ergonomic furniture and environmentally responsible materials — including FSC-certified woods and low-emission products — promote comfort and health throughout the space.

COMMERCIAL LEVEL & LOFT

OBJECTIVE To revitalize two existing Academy of Art University buildings—an outdated library and a vacant theater—into dynamic, multi-functional spaces that foster education, community, and public engagement. This collaborative project aims to meet the evolving needs of both on-campus and online students through thoughtful design solutions that support learning, creativity, and connection.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Level & Loft is a student-led design project focused on reimagining two campus spaces: the library at 180 New Montgomery St. (Loft) and the Atelier at 79 New Montgomery St. (Level) in San Francisco. After surveying students and identifying underused features, our team developed a proposal that blends functionality with community-building. The Loft redesign transforms the library into a vibrant hub with collaborative study zones, private huddle rooms, a wellness center, and a café. Biophilic design, improved lighting, and modern materials make the space both productive and inviting. The Level redesign turns the Atelier into a public-facing destination with a state-of-the-art theater, interactive exhibits, a radio station, a retail store for student-designed merchandise, and a safe Uber Lounge. The design encourages student life and strengthens AAU’s connection with the broader community. Together, these redesigned spaces support academic growth, social engagement, and inclusivity—creating a welcoming environment that reflects the future of student-centered design.

ADDRESSING KEY ISSUES

The existing library at 180 New Montgomery St. is dark, outdated, and underutilized, failing to meet the evolving needs of students. The lack of natural light, outdated furnishings, and inefficient layout create an uninviting atmosphere that discourages use. With limited designated study areas, inadequate collaboration spaces, and a rigid, traditional library structure, the space does not support the diverse ways students learn, work, and interact today. Without modern amenities, comfortable seating, or engaging design elements, the library has become an overlooked resource rather than a central hub for academic and social engagement.

Our design transforms the Loft into a dynamic, multi-functional space that fosters productivity, collaboration, and well-being. A warm, woodclad Breezeway improves circulation and brightens the once-dark space, while zoned study areas accommodate both quiet focus and group collaboration. Biophilic elements, including greenery and natural materials, create a calming atmosphere, while an interactive library system enhances accessibility. A sleek café and wellness center promote relaxation and encourage students to stay. Through thoughtful planning, modern materials, and integrated technology, the Loft is reimagined as a welcoming and engaging hub for student success.

Loft is a transformative redesign of the Academy of Art University’s library at 180 New Montgomery St., reimagined as a dynamic, multi-functional hub that promotes academic success, wellness, and community engagement. Previously dark, outdated, and underutilized, the space now features a Quiet Zone for focused work and a Collaborative Zone for group activities, connected by a warm, wood-clad Breezeway that enhances circulation and ambiance. Flexible study spaces, including private huddle rooms and semi-private areas, accommodate different learning styles, while biophilic design elements, such as integrated greenery and natural materials, create a refreshing atmosphere. An interactive library system with digital displays streamlines book reservations and student resources, while a sleek café provides a welcoming social hub. A dedicated wellness center offers a meditation room, study pods and ergonomic seating to support student well-being. With a contemporary material palette of polished concrete, warm wood tones, and soft acoustic finishes, Loft seamlessly blends education, technology, and wellness, ensuring a space that inspires both on-campus and online students.

GROUND FLOOR || PROPOSED The Level redesign transforms the Academy of Art University’s Atelier at 79 New Montgomery St. into a vibrant, multi-purpose space that welcomes students, prospective students, and the broader community. Once an underutilized area with an outdated theater, the new design enhances functionality by integrating a state-of-the-art theater, an interactive exhibition space, a student-run radio station, a retail store featuring student-designed merchandise, and social gathering areas. A striking entryway leads through the exhibit space into a thoughtfully designed lounge and café, creating an inviting atmosphere for conversation and collaboration. The theater now accommodates movie nights, TED Talks, and speaking engagements, while the VIP section provides an exclusive viewing experience. The exhibit space features glass walls that serve as projection surfaces for student artwork, creating an immersive and ever-changing gallery experience. An Uber Lounge provides a safe and comfortable space for students waiting for rideshares. Modern materials, such as tinted glass, polished concrete, and warm upholstery, add depth and sophistication to the space. With interactive technology and flexible programming, Level fosters creativity, engagement, and connection, making it a key destination for both students and the public.

KAZUMI GARDENS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

OBJECTIVE Design a luxury retirement community for Zoiros Frontida that prioritizes accessibility, comfort, and social engagement for senior residents. The project should integrate modern functionality with a refined aesthetic, fostering a sense of tranquility and connection while accommodating a range of mobility needs and lifestyle preferences.

PROJECT OVERVIEW Kazumi Gardens is a luxury retirement community designed to provide a refined and enriching living environment for senior residents. Inspired by the Japanese philosophies of Kintsugi and Mono no Aware, the design embraces the beauty of imperfection, resilience, and the transient nature of life. Thoughtful spatial planning ensures accessibility, comfort, and ease of movement, while natural materials, warm wood tones, and a sophisticated color palette create a harmonious atmosphere. Public spaces, such as the grand lobby and multipurpose room, encourage social engagement, while private residences offer a peaceful retreat, fostering a balance between community and independence.

LOBBY & RECEPTION The Lobby & Reception area is designed to set a welcoming tone, with carefully curated materials that align with the overarching concept of harmony, elegance, and cultural reverence. A focal point of the space is the hanging origami crane installation—custom pieces in black, gold, white, red, and blue—that symbolize peace, prosperity, and vitality while referencing Japanese traditions. These are suspended above the grand staircase to create visual movement and evoke a sense of wonder upon entry. Materials like the Hibi Moonlight tile, maple wood slats, and a custom reception desk clad in stone further reinforce the project’s themes of craftsmanship,

MULTIPURPOSE ROOM This adaptable space invites residents to gather, create, and connect within an environment that celebrates both presence and impermanence. A richly textured accent wall acts as a focal point, symbolizing the layered passage of time and echoing the philosophy of mono no aware—a gentle awareness of life’s fleeting moments. Soft neutrals balance the space, while thoughtfully selected patterns on the chairs introduce elements of movement and storytelling. Together, these features reflect the spirit of kintsugi: embracing imperfection and highlighting the beauty in change, memory, and the act of coming together.
