THE VERY ESSENCE OF THE CONFERENCE WAS VIZION’S CLARITY OF EXPERTISE, TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATION AND, OF COURSE, TO SUSTAIN AND FURTHER GROW THE VIZION BRAND AND NETWORK.

IT DIDN’T DISAPPOINT The diversity of speakers and subjects meant for an interesting and topical day, however, I don’t think anyone was prepared for the overwhelming success of the event as a whole.

Mark from bodyshop officially launched the conference, providing a concise introduction and run down to the events proceedings, proclaiming the “normal rules no longer apply”.

First up was Chris McKie, Director, Network Development, with a review of goals and aspirations from 2015, with a very clear pattern of excelling all known projections and goals, whilst still maintaining the core values of Vizion.

Network growth and improvements have been phenomenal, staff levels have increased as a result, and an increase in the forecasted repairs show no sign of slowing down.

The focus then changed to the present and how Vizion is constantly evolving and adapting to the ever changing landscape, and that whilst success is to

be applauded, ‘growth brings benefits and also challenges’.

Evolution can have consequences and growing pains are inevitable, due to transitional changes, demand on resources and training requirements.

However, there are no major problems and opportunity ultimately favours the brave.

Chris finished the presentation with a strong message of intent, simply put “2016 is going to be biblical”.

The second keynote was a discussion panel comprising Sarah Kenworthy from AXA, Steve Plunkett from Volvo, Iain Sinclair from Aviva and Kevern Thompson from Jaguar Land Rover discussing the pros and cons of consolidation and collaboration.

Chaired by Mark, the panel discussed in detail the challenges within the industry with existing business models, opinions and how forward thinking companies have growth strategies.

Then it was time for lunch and a chance to visit some of the 95 exhibitors in the main exhibition arena, whilst enjoying the complimentary buffet in the main foyer.

Reconvening in the main auditorium the afternoon sessions began.

A different approach to the typical industry subjects, whilst at the same time, the subject involves every individual in the room. Vizion invited Nettitude to the conference to talk about cyber security, Ben explained the perils of cyber security in today’s multi-faceted digital world, referred to as the possible perfect storm brewing.

Data threats are evolving and because of this the government and industry are working on strategies to provide help and support. Ben also explained that every company, individual, should also have their own strategies in place and that cyber hacking and crime is a very real threat. See page 22 to read in more detail.

Andrew Marsh, then took to the stage to explain the power of computer data.

That 3D modelling and design and virtual testing results in valuable data sets that could benefit all, and that the power of 3D rendering and modelling is now accessible to all.

Shine Awards, is the new recognition platform by Vizion, that awards our top repairers in the 4 Regions spanning the UK and Ireland, each with their own ‘Regional Repairer of the Year’ award, and the chance of being awarded the highest accolade of ‘UK and Ireland Repairer of the Year’ or ‘UK and Ireland Manufacturer Repairer of the Year’.

There is also the People’s Choice Award, the favourite repairer as voted by the Vizion operational and call centre staff.

Eamonn Dunne had the honour of presenting the awards. “It was great to be on stage and to present the awards to the best of the best, the winners have

shown repeatedly their commitment to Vizion and to quality repairs and service”.

Chris Mckie’s closing session was to reveal many exciting and new innovations within the network and continuing growth through innovation and new technology. Chris also highlighted the continued emphsis on strong partnerships wth suppliers and industry partners One Vizion, One network, always Innovative, always Vizionary, always together.

all sectors in the future. To open up opportunities to the wider market and to further reinforce our mutual offering through the creation of ever more stable and sustainable relationship models.

We covered a number of topics during the day along with the announcement that we have surpassed every performance and sales target set in 2014 with a truly spectacular performance made by the network.

We also announced the phenomenal and continuing growth of Vizion, being on target in 2015 to achieve 190,000 repairs with even greater improvements in customer satisfaction and further reductions in customer effort.

This puts the Vizion partnerships in a fantastic position, and as I said during my speech, the symmetry between Vizion and its partners both repairer and client just could not be better.

Also, as I stated on the day, it should be remembered however that growth brings benefits but can also bring challenges, so it does not do well to be over confident. When successful it is the time to continue to plan strongly and bring in the right people which we are continuing to do, most recently with the addition of Dave Reece in a dual role as our head of external operations and head of the Ford collision team.

We also discussed the need to ensure we deliver the needs of our existing and new partners and maintain our winning formulas going forward.

This will, as always, be achieved by the great people within Vizion and our network, managing in a hierarchical fashion with transparency and trust.

Supported by next generation systems built on our Cortex, Opus and Autoflow platforms to our networks and customers specific needs.

These systems will shortly be expanded by the addition of the soon to be released Retina and Nucleus operating systems, which will bring an as yet unseen dimension to our retail and sales functionality, and also strategic reporting capabilities, another Vizion first for our sector.

We also welcomed a large number of new clients to Vizion in 2015 and discussed some of the benefits that these new partnerships are bringing to Vizion repairer partners and the benefits we are also bringing to the new clients.

AXA was the first of our new clients in Jan 2015, this was followed by NFU Mutual who joined us in May. Both clients are enjoying substantial increases in performance and at less than 12 months in, and although it is fair to say there is always room for improvement, both accounts are tracking well above expectation, reflecting a fantastic performance by the network.

Ford paint and body services also formally joined the Vizion network in May 2015 followed by the pre-existing Volkswagen Group UK relationship being strengthened in June 2015 as Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS) launched their new insurer panel.

Post conference, Renault and Dacia Accident Assistance joined us in November 2015, as did Chaucer Insurance bringing 2015 and a fantastically successful year for new clients to a close.

These new affiliations and a further rationalisation of our pre-existing network layers have allowed us to organically grow the network by a further 96 repairer partners in the year.

This also provides the entire network with more manageable areas and substantially increased volumes which also allows our clients to enjoy a much more defined and sustainable capacity structure.

This scenario, and the adding of new and previously unconnected sites, helps us to maintain available capacity and, therefore, sustainability in each area whilst maintaining best advantage of each repairer partner, a true win win scenario to our partnership and our industry.

We also announced our growing Vizion presence in the Republic of Ireland. This market is a very strong growth area for us and compliments well our very strong and well established presence in Northern Ireland.

We were assisted on the day by Mark Hadaway, Editor of bodyshop Magazine, who acted as invigilator and hosted a very interesting debate on consolidation‌ Assisting on the panel of experts were Sarah Kenworthy, Head of Supply Chain Management, AXA Insurance; Steve Plunkett, Programme Development Manager Volvo, Iain Sinclair, Senior Supply Chain Manager for Aviva and Kevern Thompson, UK Body and Paint program manager, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

The panel agreed that communication, brand and integrity is paramount in the repair industry and vehicle manufacturers and insurers want safe repairs for all customers. Working together in active and transparent collaboration being the way forward, they concluded that consolidation was neither bad nor good but a natural evolutionary step which can

work well, but the main issues which should become the point of focus for all is increased customer service, communication and brand awareness.

The current skill shortage that exists within the repair industry was also touched upon during the session, and quite rightly was cited as probably the biggest risk to our industry of them all.

This is an area Vizion is working on and will be releasing further news on this in 2016‌ Ben Densham, CTO Nettitude also joined us to discuss data security in the digital world and how to calculate risk when it comes to your data. This is a major area of concern and this message was punctuated less than 48 hours later by the Cyber-attack on Talk Talk, the point being well and truly made I would say.

Andrew Marsh, Engineering Director, Auto Industry Insider, also joined us and talked about the power and benefits of

crash test simulator technology and fluid dynamics, and the potential benefits in the form of collision modelling and future estimating systems this could bring.

Matt Hudson was the last of our guests bringing inspiration at its best, Matt brought insight to the ‘Saboteur within’ and the negative power the fear of change can hold.

I believe Vizion is in the eye of the storm that has been building for years and by design is perfectly placed to act as a catalyst for positive change. Vizion is looking at this change within the industry in a positive light and intends to use this to the best advantage of our partners and our industry as a whole.

We could not be more pleased with this year’s 20|20 Vizion event, the day and evening went amazingly well and it was fantastic that so many could make it.

We know how expensive it is for our

repairer partners, clients, suppliers and friends to be out of their businesses, so it was very important to us for everyone to feel that the time was well spent.

After receiving some amazing feedback during the day via our Cortex system, and since the event in both our CSI and some fantastic personal emails, we are pleased that this has clearly been achieved.

HOW SAFE IS YOUR DATA REALLY? AT THE VIZION 20|20 EVENT THIS YEAR WE DISCUSSED THE IMPORTANCE OF GETTING OUR STRATEGY RIGHT WITH CYBER SECURITY. ONE OF THE THINGS WE LOOKED AT WAS AROUND AWARENESS OF HOW ATTACKS HAPPEN AND THAT WE SHOULD NOT GET INTO THE MIND-SET THAT WE CAN EVER BE 100% DEFENDED AGAINST ATTACKS. If an attacker wants to get in to our network then there is a high chance they will be able to find a way, especially if they target our people and processes and not just our technology.

In order to counteract this, we need to focus on our incident detection and response capabilities.

TRADITIONAL METHODS Penetration testing is designed to help organisations identify vulnerabilities in their people, processes and their technology. Through exploitation, penetration testing companies can provide context around the likelihood and impact of a vulnerability being exploited. This whole process feeds in to a mature risk management framework.

There is an abundance of security solutions that are designed to help mitigate against technology based vulnerabilities. These products and services provide centralised security, distributed security and end user

security however organisations are still compromised and data is still stolen.

Due to cloud based computing, BYOD and connectivity that is always on, it is almost impossible for organisations to achieve 100% confidence in their security posture. As a consequence, the security industry must focus more on detection and response, as opposed to focusing purely on defensive measures.

HISTORY TELLS US BE AWARE Nettitude has delivered incident response and forensic assessment services for many years. Over the last decade, we have seen a re-occurring trend where people get breached, data is exposed and organisations remain completely oblivious to the breach until they are contacted by their bank, their customers or their suppliers. The reason for this is that their detection services are weak. Their logging is incomplete and their response services are poorly considered.

To address these challenges, Nettitude has created a series of services that allow organisations to assess and measure their detection and response capability.

NETTITUDE DETECTION AND RESPONSE ANALYSIS Nettitude delivers Incident Response Maturity Assessments (IRMA). These are consulting engagements that measure an organisations detection and response capability against similar sized organisations in the same country and industry vertical. This approach provides a roadmap for bridging any gaps that exist in an organisation’s incident response programme.

As part of Nettitude’s penetration testing methodology, we have built a series of custom scripts and software plugins to measure an organisation’s detection and response capability.

These approaches are designed to simulate numerous threat actors with varying levels of sophistication. They are designed to simulate some of the techniques, tactics and procedures (TTPs) that threat actors are known to display. An organisations ability to detect these TTPs in an indicator of their response capability. Not being able to detect these types of activity is indicated as a series of vulnerabilities which are then documented in the ‘detection and response’ analysis.

Types of TTPs assessed through a technical Incident Response Maturity Assessment (IRMA)

1. Specific type of port scan with a detectable characteristic, from both friendly and hostile IP address ranges 2. Unsophisticated phishing attack using pre-canned data 3. Sophisticated phishing e-mail attack using custom data from threat intelligence feed 4. Brute force Login to authentication daemon with detectable credentials 5. SQL injection attack from a source with a known user agent string 6. Failed administrator login within x time period 7. Anti-Virus activity 8. Windows service manipulation 9. Stopping, starting, creation of a windows service 10. Command & control traffic 11. Data exfiltration of a 1 GB to both trusted and hostile destination (POC not real data) 12. Writing to specific known registry keys

TIMELY DETECTION… AND EFFECTIVE RESPONSE Nettitude’s detection and response assessment allows an organisation to determine whether they would be able to spot an intruder within their network.

Vulnerabilities that are identified in this exercise are graded according to the sophistication of the known threat actors, and the impact that the behaviour would have within the environment.

All guidance is clear, concise and actionable with a series of next step actions.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO FULLY AUTOMATE ESTIMATES? AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN FOR YOU THE DREAM A vehicle has a collision, connects with emergency services if required and builds the estimate.

THE REALITY Some features work, but most is simply hot air and spin.

Yes, a vehicle can report a collision, but the simplest way to avoid reporting heft pot holes is to ensure this only happens once the airbag system has triggered.

That is the way the much fabled three legged donkey ‘eCall’ works. eCall then will use the on-board connectivity to call to a centre which can then give precise location details to the emergency services assuming that the mobile phone network has coverage and the GPS is working too. Why is this a three legged donkey? Because the system is reliant on

the connectivity service provider, which the European Union failed to resolve after nearly two decades of discussion.

Let’s skip over the present status because the situation is evolving rapidly.

The nub of the self-estimating vehicle is access to data which is typically not used today. All of the current estimating systems use parts lists and methods, but we shall see there is a bigger and much more integrated data stream that exists inside the vehicle manufacturers.

HOW DID THIS DATA EVOLVE? CAD wire frame model uses a series of lines and curves which are joined together in a mesh. This type of modelling was born in the aerospace and off shore oil industry but was widely adopted by the automotive industry 39

from the early 1970s onwards initially for packaging all the services required to make a vehicle functional (ie, brakes, suspension, steering, fuel system, seats, restraints and electrical systems). Each part and sub-assembly will have its own model reference, which will either be a part number or associated with a part number.

The limitation of wire frame models is that other models can be punched through the open parts of the mesh – something an experienced CAD designer won’t do, but becomes more difficult to manage of bigger and more intricate projects. The solution? Solid modelling, where the wire frame is skinned with a series of shells which then are merged to form a ‘single’ surface. Just as with wire frame, by making an inner and outer surface we can start to define the bulk of the part and associate material properties with it too. This technique was widely adopted from the aerospace industry by the late 1980s.

The final evolution was to provide high

end graphics packages which were available to designers from the early 1990s onwards, which design studios are only now using as the primary creative tool instead of clay. By-the-way, the ‘hot topic’ of 3D printing was used to make prototype engine parts way back in the mid-1990s.

So far we have: Shapes defined by wire models.

Association of those shapes with part numbers, and material properties.

ADD SIMULATION Using the fully dimensioned parts we can stretch and squeeze them by applying loads via a process called Finite Element Analysis (FEA). We can also model the fluids that pass either around parts or inside them via a process called Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) which originated in the 1970s, and again was developed by the aerospace industry. The power? Altering the shapes in CAD can then be tested virtually in a fraction of the time and cost compared

with physical testing. Each alteration is fully captured, so once frozen can be fed directly into making real parts.

FEA and CFD was in use during the late 1980s, but because of the lack of empirical data, it required immense computing power. Nearly a quarter of a century later, thanks to building data banks verified with physical testing, and making the FEA / CFD programming less intensive, such calculations can now be performed on a powerful PC in a matter of minutes.

With the advent of CAD, impact simulation modelled by computer was possible. As with the many improvements in the power of computing systems combined with an ever increasing library of verified sub data sets, so the system has migrated from super computer to powerful PC. The models used to be run in parallel with physical testing, but from around 2005 onwards FEA is the primary technique used.

So we have: • Every component fully modelled.

• Every component and sub system

capable of being subjected to impact.

TODAY IN THE AFTER MARKET In the after-market we have: • Parts lists • Methods – because repair can be subtly different from the manufacturing process.

These two data sets are at the core of most estimating systems and whilst there are some collection of documents (select one and the others are automatically selected) the accuracy of the estimate is wholly down to the

skill of the estimator and the use of the estimating system. Whilst it takes a great deal of time and effort by the vehicle manufacturer to put together these documents, they are effectively disconnected from the almighty CADF / CAE / FEA data base. The irony is that methods published in the last 10 years frequently use images from this data base… and do not have a close link to the parts data base except inside the vehicle manufacturer system.

THE LINK BETWEEN BIG DATA AND BETTER ESTIMATES There needs to be a seamless flow from parts list to method to estimate, inside the estimating system. Something that allows a professional estimator to pull and push a model of a vehicle to replicate the pattern of damage they see, which then produces a list of all the parts that could be damaged, all the parts that must be replaced in the process of rebuild, and the appropriate methods to restore the vehicle.

Already commerce models allow multiple pricing for parts, so this improved front end ‘engine’ would already marry up with such systems. To achieve this it would need: • A ‘light’ version of the full vehicle CAD model.

• One that can be crushed, bent and mangled just as we see the real wreck in front of us...

• Which then produces in real time all the parts- right down to the last screw – which need to be replaced...

• Which has collision repair subroutines where allowable sections are highlighted.

Possible? Yes, and has been for at least a decade.

Probable? Yes, but not until now.

Vehicle manufacturers are understandably nervous about giving enough information to build an entire vehicle from scratch. Whilst no collision repairers would build a rip-off car, there are manufacturers who do. What changed? The advent of modelling which is not fully detailed for vehicle manufacturing purposes, but could be detailed enough for our purposes.

THE DREAM – THE SELFESTIMATING CAR There are right now and at least for the next decade severe limits around getting large quantities of data into and out of a vehicle in real time. 3G is a non-starter for this, 4G LTE is better but hardly available nationwide, and 5G makes more sense but has not even started to be rolled out.

Essentially vehicles need a dedicated communication system rather than relying on a mobile phone system which will always give priority to phone calls.

However, the vehicle does not need to have the ability to broadcast an estimate. Based on the type and severity of the impact, it can then produce a scenario from which a remote server can than apply the data to produce the estimate.

Based on the typical array of SRS sensors (front impact sensors – not always fitted, side impact sensors and

the SRS control module) and the data from the braking system, the vehicle can report position, rotation, velocity and rate of deceleration. If we are to get to a vehicle capable of greater estimate accuracy, it needs to have more sensors – and that is not a trend that is underway. For this reason the self-estimating vehicle will continue to need an estimate produced by a collision repair professional for many years to come.

IS IT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM FOR REPAIRER? Far from it. The current system of parts data and methods data will be in place for at least another decade, but the trend is towards greater connectivity and better, faster, cheaper simulation. That means in the absence of better on-vehicle sensing, an enhanced fully integrated parts with methods system for use by professional estimators. Just as we use enhanced systems in other parts of our lives, we can do more and understand more during the estimating process. This is already vital in vehicle repair because the dominant technology is not the body structure but the electronic system.

If the vehicle is fully restored with a defective or partially re-commissioned electronic system, it will not function properly. To do this with effectively a parts manual and a methods manual is already tough, and getting tougher by the day.

The Caricaturist moved from

guest to guest drawing amusing pictures which guests were then able to take home, whilst the Silhouette Artist, a ninja with the scissors, had to be seen to be believed. In approximately 45 seconds, using only scissors and card, the artist produced a perfect silhouette for the guest… amazing!

It was truly a great end to a great event.

VIZION VIZION’S BRAND HAS GONE FROM STRENGH TO STRENGH OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS, AND NOW IS A FAMILIAR ICON IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY. 2016 will see the continuing development of the brand and a strong emphasis on continuity on all levels of both internal and network communications and also to develop the brand to become more consumer based.

It is important that all communications are clearly branded correctly and that the correct logos, fonts and colours are applied and keep within the guidelines.

To help in our quest to be completely brand centric, we are putting together a collection of materials to help our repairers become part of the Vizion brand.

APPROVED SIGNAGE Rolling out in the first quarter of 2016, an approved Vizion repairer sign will be available. By having this displayed the customer will identify the brand from any correspondence before visiting the bodyshop.

DIGITAL SUPPORT We will have a variety of logos, images and support for repairer websites, so that Vizion is displayed on their site, this will familiarise the consumer with the brand and therefore will know the digital correspondence they will receive, for example CSI, repair updates etc.

LEAFLETS AND BROCHURES We are putting together a ‘brand’ area on cortex that will have a central location for branded material such as leaflets, CSI handouts and other materials that will 66

help you and the customer, demystifying areas such as repair notifications and CSI. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL COMMS Starting in December there will be an audit on all communications and marketing material both internal and external, to ensure the current brand is being used and any old material is replaced.

BODY PREPARATION TECHNIQUES FROM CROMAX CROMAX速 UNDERSTANDS THAT TO DELIVER A QUALITY REPAIR, CORRECT BODY PREPARATION IS A KEY PART OF THE PROCESS, TOGETHER WITH USING THE RIGHT PRODUCTS AND APPLYING THEM WITH EXPERTISE. KNOW YOUR SUBSTRATE AND KEEP IT CLEAN As basic as it sounds, it is absolutely vital for refinishers to know which substrate they are dealing with, such as composite or galvanised steel. For instance, to sand bare aluminium, refinishers should use a fine grade of abrasive to avoid creating deep scratches or generating too much heat, which can distort thinner sections of the panel. It is also important to remember that if the substrate is galvanic, corrosion can occur by crosscontaminating aluminium with steel.

This is completely avoidable in a dustand dirt-free environment, and by using designated tools.

USE THE RIGHT GRADE OF SAND PAPER If refinishers do not use the right grade of abrasive paper, it can lead to scratches showing through into the topcoat. The sanding operation should always be carried out in conjunction with a good quality dry guide coat, which should be applied to the repair area before moving to a finer grit abrasive.

This enables the refinisher to see any minor defects in the repair area.

CLEAN AND DEGREASE PROPERLY An important aspect of body preparation is full and careful degreasing and appropriate cleaning of the panel before starting the refinishing stage.

Refinishers can use 3608S Prepclean, which eliminates non-water-soluble contaminant, such as wax, polish, tar, silicon and grease, from old finishes.

This should then be followed by 3910WB Waterborne Prepclean, which removes all water-soluble contaminants.

Cleaning the vehicle at this stage allows the refinishers to make an accurate assessment of the damage, and also makes refinishing easier and less prone to contamination. Refinishers need to demonstrate exceptional hygiene at this point otherwise this can affect the final finish. By regularly changing gloves, and having separate overalls for preparation and for painting, refinishers can achieve a better end-result.

INDUSTRY Once the vehicle is at the priming stage refinishers should again use a preparatory cleaner, like 3910WB Prepclean, to eliminate any contaminant that may have settled on the repair area. They should also use a clean tack cloth over the prepared area so that a clean surface is obtained before the application of subsequent undercoats.

3911WB Final Clean should then be used for the next degreasing steps in the repair process.

USE AN ETCH PRIMER Many refinishers do not use an etch primer in the refinishing process. This can be a critical error as the etch primer plays a very important role, giving the best possible adhesion between the substrate and the subsequent layer.

For example a 2K primer renders the paint layer impermeable to moisture preventing micro blistering at a later date. Refinishers can opt to use 635R, an etching primer, or wash primer surfacer aerosols 42R, 44R or 46R used as etching primers. Both provide excellent longterm protection against corrosion and blistering of bare metal.

Cromax has also developed two directto-metal 2K low emission non sanding primer-surfacers - NS2602 and NS2607 – which are easy to apply and fast to recoat. They are suitable not only for direct to metal application on substrates such as steel, zinc and aluminium, but also over unsanded E-coats. With the addition of AZ9600 plastic additive they are also equally effective on exterior plastic vehicle components.

RIGHT NOW, IT’S THE COOLEST CAR ON THE PLANET. IT’S THE ECO-FRIENDLY SUPERCAR OF THE FUTURE BUT IT’S HERE NOW AND PEOPLE LOVE IT. Everything about the i8 is different. It is a motoring revolution, from the sci-fi looks and hybrid engine to what it’s built from.

The i8 is the star of BMW’s new “i” range that they believe will turn motorists on to electric cars and the German car giants are spending a fortune in their brave gamble to pursue the electric dream.

Banking on electric mobility as the future, the firm are developing hybrid electric versions of mainstream models, as well as the i3 supermini that sits at the opposite end of the scale to the i8. It costs £99,540 (after the £5000 government grant) with a huge waiting list of buyers? But is this really a time machine sending us into the future of motoring, or just a gimmick?

From the moment you flatten the accelerator and the i8 glides silently but ridiculously quickly into action, you realise this is the real deal.

In city traffic, it can travel up to 22 miles in pure electric mode, so you can use it as your everyday car and most city commuters can get by on electric power with no fuel bills.

But this is a supercar and owners will want to enjoy driving it over long distances, which is where the 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine comes in.

It may seem flimsy for a supercar but when it works in combination with the 96kw electric motor, it turns into a real flying machine, 0-62mph takes 4.4 seconds and the top speed is 155mph.

And it sounds the part.

When you floor the accelerator, it has the deep growl of a supercar but no other supercar is capable of 134.5mpg and CO2 emissions of just 49g/km.

There are four driving modes — comfort for normal driving, Eco Pro for economy, sport for supercar fun and edrive for pure electric.

The entertainment comes when you switch to sport. This changes the suspension, quickens the accelerator response and gear changes, and boosts power from the electric motor to maximum. And while it handles every inch a supercar on demanding roads, the i8 is equally at home as a relaxing city cruiser.

There is a boot under the glass hatch at the rear in which you can fit a couple of weekend bags – but don’t expect to be carting around large suitcases.

As a plug-in hybrid, the i8 does without the range anxiety of traditional electric cars. With a 32-litre fuel tank, it can, theoretically, cover just over 300 miles

on a full charge and with a full tank.

Plug in to a domestic power socket and you’ll get an 80 per cent charge in about three hours, while fitting a £315 BMW home charging station will reduce the charge time to two hours.

Many people will buy it for its sensational looks alone – from the low-slung mean front end and glorious scissor wing doors to the amazing floating roof pillars that take you to a back end that is the motoring equal of rear of the year.

Some of the other highlights include the immense blue lighting in the cockpit that adds to the entire sci-fi effect – and the fact you can just press the start button and drive it like a normal car.

Customers globally registered 76,124 vehicles during the first six months of 2015* – a 56 per cent increase versus the same period last year.

“Customers in Europe and right-hand drive markets around the world have been waiting more than half a century for the official Mustang experience, so it’s no surprise that we are seeing huge demand for Mustangs in these regions,” said Stephen Odell, executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service. “It’s taken the support of customers in every corner of the globe to achieve the position of the world’s bestselling sports car.”

Initial sales show that in Europe across both fastback and convertible body styles, Race Red and Magnetic Grey (both 21 per cent of total sales) are the most popular exterior paint colour choices.

European fastback customers show a preference for Race Red (24 per cent) and convertible customers for Magnetic Grey (32 per cent).

Fastback models account for 3 in 4 sales in Europe to date (72 per cent) and 2 in 3 customers have opted for Ford’s

5.0-litre V8 engine delivering 421 PS (64 per cent).

Drivers in Europe are split almost evenly between six-speed manual (51 per cent) and six-speed automatic (49 per cent) transmissions. However, the automatic transmission is proving more popular with 5.0-litre V8 customers (57 per cent) and the manual option with 317 PS 2.3-litre EcoBoost customers (65 per cent).

First Mustangs with right-hand drive Production of the right-hand drive Mustang model is underway at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Mich., U.S., continuing the car’s first-ever global launch.

The Ford Mustang is now available to customers in more than 100 markets around the world. The addition of a right-hand drive Mustang to Ford’s global vehicle lineup allows export to more than 25 additional markets around the globe, including the U.K.,

South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, as well as Cyprus, Malta and a smattering of Caribbean islands.

GLOBAL SALES LEADER

2,000 Ford Mustang orders have been taken in the U.K. since January. First customer deliveries are expected in November, with extra supply secured to meet the greater-than-expected demand.

Sales in the U.S. and Asia began last winter, and Mustangs first made their way to European markets this summer.

New buyers are driving U.S. sales growth, especially in regions such as Southern California – the largest sports car market in the country, according to IHS – where Mustang retail sales have more than doubled this year.

Customer anticipation for Mustang in Europe was obvious last year when Ford opened pre-ordering for 500 Mustangs during the 2014 UEFA Champions League finals; customers filled the pre-order list in mere minutes. More than 8,000 Mustangs have been sold in Europe to date.

While Mustang is a new entry into the China market, it is already one of the nation’s top-selling sports cars, with hottest sales in Beijing, Guangdong and Shanghai.

Another right-hand-drive market eagerly awaiting units is Australia, where nearly 3,000 orders already have been received.

Four hundred orders have been received in right-hand-drive New Zealand, where customer deliveries begin this autumn.

Models are just starting to hit dealerships in Europe, with markets including the U.K. eagerly awaiting delivery of the first right-hand drive models. Almost

AUTOMOTIVE Kadjar has been designed to be at home in any environment. Its compact size and command-post visibility make it ideal in busy urban areas; its estate car-like driving position and quiet, comfortable interior ensure the driver remains relaxed and focused on long journeys; and it has everything those owners who want a life of escapism and adventure might need.

The exterior exudes the dynamism and strength of a car built to go off the beaten track, but with more fluid, elegant lines than more boxy SUVs. It features muscular front wings, pronounced rear shoulders, slightly sculpted sides and doors which finish flush with the sills. Sculpted 17- and 19inch alloy wheels are further evidence of its robust character.

A chrome strip runs across the headlights to emphasise the car’s width.

The new lighting signature first seen on the latest Espace has been carried across to Kadjar and there are C-shaped LED daytime running lights. A structured grille, front and rear skid plates, lower door protective mouldings, black wheel arch extensions and anodised aluminium roof bars emphasise Kadjar’s off-road capabilities, but the car’s elegance is also to the fore in the chromed window surround, sill guard and daytime running light surrounds, and the body-colour door handles and mirror housings.

This is maintained inside the car. The horizontal dashboard stretching into the doors is a pointer to the car’s width and spaciousness. It contains two trim strips, while the instrument panel and air vents are outlined in chrome. Grab handles on

each front door and the centre console and a bold gearlever attest to Kadjar’s sportiness and all-roads character.

This combination of sportiness and comfort is also evident in the seats, which have patterned cushions, vertical forms on the backrests and graphic patches on the side of the headrests. The seats are backed with dual-density foam for maximum comfort and support.

Courtesy handles in the boot release the ‘Easy Break’ 60:40 split rear seats, and the front passenger seat tips forward to form a small table or make space for longer items to be carried.

Two boot configurations are possible, giving either a flat floor or a capacity of 472 litres (seats upright), and the boot can be divided into three areas to prevent items from moving during transit. There is also 30 litres of storage space within the cabin, which provides passenger space on a par with anything in the class.

Kadjar is available with a full suite of active driving aids to help city, highway and country drivers avoid accidents or parking scrapes, see in the dark and avoid breaking the law. Many are accessed through the R-Link 2 connectivity menu.

For city driving the Active Emergency Braking System can prevent, or limit the effects of, a low-speed collision. It senses when there is the possibility of a collision with the vehicle in front, alerts the driver and then automatically initiates braking if no action is taken.

Parking bumps and scrapes are avoided through a number of available features. Easy Park Assist identifies suitable parking spaces and then takes full control of the steering during the manoeuvre. It is equally effective for parallel, end-on and angled manoeuvres and displays all essential information on the central screen. The driver only has to work the accelerator and brakes.

All-New Kadjar is also available with 360-degree proximity sensors and a reversing camera to assist in parking manoeuvres, and these are equally effective when guiding the car through difficult off-road terrain with restricted visibility. Meanwhile a Hill Start Assist function holds the car for three seconds when setting off on gradients of three per cent or steeper to give the driver time to transfer from the brake pedal to the accelerator.

For motorway driving Kadjar can be equipped with Lane Departure and Blind Spot warning systems which identify when the car is about to stray into an adjacent lane, and possibly into the path of a vehicle approaching from behind.

There is also a Traffic Sign Recognition and Speed Alert system to help the driver remain within the law, and cruise control with speed limiter which maintains the car’s speed and prevents it from exceeding a pre-set limit.

And for night driving the Kadjar offers full-LED Pure Vision, which automatically adjusts the main and dipped headlight beam and endows the car with a more intense and precise light pattern 20 per cent more powerful than halogen lighting. It includes cornering foglights which activate when the indicator is used or the steering is turned at speeds below 25mph.

AUTOMOTIVE Bodyshell manufacturing for the new Audi R8 is a very special low-volume production operation. The facility at Audi Böllinger Höfe close to Neckarsulm, opened in fall 2014, is set up for small production runs and broad diversity – and for high-end expertise in lightweight engineering. The high-performance sports car’s multi-material Audi Space Frame (ASF) weighs just 200 kilograms, yet is extremely stiff and impact safe. It is made 70 percent from aluminum and 13 percent from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) – in accordance with the Audi motto “The right material in the right amounts in the right place.”

“At full capacity, we will produce 40 bodyshells per day in two-shift operation,” explains Jochen Wagner, Head of Production Quattro GmbH. “We have divided bodyshell production into two main areas – Bodyshell Production 1 is for the aluminum elements, and Bodyshell Production 2 is for adding the CFRP parts. In Bodyshell Production 1, we also differentiate between the zone for welding work and the area for bolt-on parts and finish. The flexibility we gain through this helps us when it comes to building derivatives such as the R8 LMS GT3 race car.

AT FULL CAPACITY, WE WILL PRODUCE 40 BODYSHELLS PER DAY IN TWO-SHIFT OPERATION,

The bodyshell of the new Audi R8 is created in a production rhythm of about 30 minutes, with people and robots alternating tasks. In the first step, specialists weld together the front end of the car, the central floor and the rear end from aluminum castings and 98

extruded profile. They then connect the three modules to create the substructure.

Robots handle the cold jointing processes – the complete ASF consists of 270 semi-hollow punch rivets, 270 blind rivets, 241 metric and 270 self-tapping screws; the welded seams are a good 89 meters long.

The bodyshell grows further with the greenhouse and the roof.

In a cell, a five-axis machine precision cuts the connecting points for the CFRP components, the suspension and the steering to within hundredths of a millimeter.

Inline laser measuring equipment checks the dimensional accuracy of the ASF. At a geometry station, technicians attach doors, lids, fenders and side parts – made from aluminum – with the aid of precision-guided fixtures.

Once the bodyshell has been through the Finish area – the final station in Bodyshell Production 1 – it is driven on a truck to the Paint Shop at the Neckarsulm plant. After cathodic dip coating, it cures in an oven at 200 degrees Celsius, where the aluminum alloys reach their final strength. “The CFRP parts are still missing at this point, because, unlike aluminum, they wouldn’t expand,” explains Jochen Wagner. “We don’t assemble them until the bodyshell is back here in the workshop. We do that in Bodyshell Production 2.”

The CFRP components form the high-

strength spine of the bodyshell. Their structure varies substantially depending on where they are used. For the rear bulkhead’s transverse beams, for instance, where the primary function is maximum lateral strength, the layers of webbing are laid largely unidirectionally.

Up to 14 of them are arranged one on top of the other in a layer five millimeters thick.

People and machines work closely together when it comes to fitting the CFRP parts. Robots apply finely measured quantities of structural adhesive and carry out precise jointing procedures. One of them inserts the rear bulkhead into the ASF, for which it is turned around its longitudinal axis; another positions the center tunnel

on a carrier, onto which the bodyshell is then lowered. The employees of quattro GmbH install what is known as the integral B-pillar and its outer shell, then carry out the fastening and riveting processes At the sealant station, robots apply sealing compound to all those areas where CFRP and aluminum parts meet in order to prevent contact corrosion.

Finally, the bodyshell is put through another oven, this time at 80 degrees Celsius, where the adhesive and sealant cure. The new R8’s ASF is now finished – 200 kilograms of concentrated hi-tech.

In September Bugatti previewed its Vision Gran Turismo Concept with a cryptic image showing the car’s basic shape and not much else. It was a bit of a tease, especially considering the automaker says the virtual vehicle “gives an outlook of the brand’s new design language.” Well, the covers have come off, and we finally have our first full look.

The concept is bold, aggressive, and commanding, with powerful haunches and slick aero (check out that center fin!) accenting the devilishly crafted front end. There’s enough of the Veyron’s influence to reinforce brand familiarity,

but it’s also different enough to keep things fresh and interesting.

“Under no circumstances did we want to create a retro-style race car in memory of the successes in Le Mans, but rather to transfer the feeling and mood of these special moments in Bugatti’s history to a modern vehicle,” said Sasha Selipanov, Bugatti’s Head of Exterior Design. “As an acknowledged Gran Turismo fan, it is a great adventure for me to bring a brand which was once so successful in racing back to the virtual track.”

MORE FUN WAY TO USE IPHONE IN THE CAR CarPlay, at its core, is Apple’s way of bringing iOS to in-car infotainment systems and dashboards. It’s designed to display information from the iPhone on a car’s built-in display, giving drivers a safe way to make phone calls, send text messages, listen to music, and access Maps -- all of the things a driver might want to do with an iPhone in a car.

When connected to an in-dash system via the iPhone’s Lightning port, CarPlay gives the user in-car access to information stored on the iPhone, like contacts for phone calls and messages, music playlists in apps, previous Maps searches, calendar events, and more.

Because CarPlay draws its information from the iPhone, there’s virtually no setup involved.

Many automobile manufacturers are building CarPlay support into cars that are set to be released in 2015 and 2016, but there’s also a way to get CarPlay in existing vehicles -- some aftermarket in-dash systems from companies like Pioneer, Kenwood, and Alpine are compatible with CarPlay and are readily available.

CarPlay is designed to be hands-free, introducing as little driver distraction as possible, and for that reason, it is voicebased and heavily reliant on Siri. Siri, for example, is used to perform a range of actions in the car, such as placing phone

calls, getting directions, sending text messages, and more.

There are also physical controls in the form of buttons and knobs, but these controls vary from vehicle to vehicle.

Systems with touch screens are able to accommodate touch-based input as well, and special adapters can enhance in-car integration of aftermarket CarPlay solutions. iOS already offers a consistent Apple experience across tablets and smartphones, but with CarPlay, that’s also extended to the car in an easyto-use format that people are already familiar with.

Because CarPlay is a rather ambitious effort that requires the cooperation of automobile makers and third-party hardware companies, it has been slow to get off the ground, but we should see a whole range of new CarPlay-enabled vehicles over the next few years.

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE WIREFRAMES TAKE OVER LONDON Londoners were stopped in their tracks today as Land Rover placed a collection of full-size Range Rover Evoque Convertible ‘wireframe’ sculptures in the iconic streets of the UK’s capital.

The installations were displayed outside prestigious London locations including the world famous Harrods department store on Brompton Road, Knightsbridge and in notable Mayfair addresses.

The bespoke sculptures were designed by Land Rover’s own Design team, using advanced computer modelling to accurately outline the shape of the forthcoming Evoque Convertible.

Crafted from aluminium and finished in a range of vibrant colours, the wireframes illustrate the elegant evolution of the Range Rover Evoque’s transformation from coupe to convertible.

Following on from the original wireframes used to launch Evoque in 2011, the 1:1 scale works of art include 3D wheels as well as front and rear seats. Six Convertible wireframes have been produced to give the public a chance to see how the Evoque Convertible will look in its natural urban environment. Each wireframe will now begin a global tour as Land Rover builds up to the introduction in November of the latest addition to the growing Range Rover family.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, said: “The Range Rover Evoque Convertible is perfectly suited to the urban surroundings of a city like London and it’s the perfect place to showcase the world’s first luxury compact SUV convertible.
