Anton is a famous food critics from France. After being impressed by Remy the rat, he wants to settle in Los Angeles and sets up some new challenges for those prestigious restaurant in the area. Apparently, he is super disappointed by the emotionless energy in

LA and on top of the stress that he needs to deal with, Anton feels enervated. Right when he wants to give up and goes back to France, a surge of rain brings Water to Anton. And that is how the journey at the Chapel of Elements begins

Chapels of Elements Despite its vibrant and active environment, according to American Psychological Association survey, the population in LA still experience stress level that exceed the healthy standard. Since stress and inflamation are usually caused by the unbalanced lifestyle, or in other words, it is significant having a place for people to regenerate their life style and routine in LA. Given the project prompt called the “unLibrary”, the Chapel of Element will focus on encouraging and providing space for the community to unwind and regenerate their energy beside learning.

The Chapel of Elements is a transparent box that contains the four basic elements of nature: wind, light, earth and water which represent the balance in nature. Each element is embedded into a chapels according to the light quality and and air circulation in the building.

For example, the Wind Chapel is driven by the characteristic of the existing metro entrance. Since this space have the most movement and interchange among locations, air circulation, and conversation. The building also want to continue this sense of movement by having a set of experiencial stair that connecting the ground to the third stories of the building. Moreover, the stair is covered with a wind-facade that is semi expose to the extrior and allow wind to continue its flow into the building.

In addition, the Water Chapel is placed in the center of the building. It is believed that water works its full potential when there are sun beams and breeze, placing the Water Chapel in between the Light and the Wind Chapel allows wind-flow to re-direct the moisture from the artificial waterfall into the environment as a creating passive cooling stratergy. Last but not least, having sun beam shinning on the water-curtain providing diffused light that brigthen up the surroundings.

Precast Concrete Structure Using site-cast upturn beam for the major structure allows building to intergrated passive cooling strategy.

It could goes up to 100 Fahrentheit in the City if Los Angeles during summer. Therefore, the concrete will absorb most of the heat from the environment, where duct work will be embeded to provide fresh air.

The project is base on the lashing technique where 2 diagonal stick tie together by loops. In this project, I have apply the lashing technique to the structure. The diagonal tubes are connected by a horizontal cylinder. This will provide a strong triangular fram to hold up the building.

Moreover, these diagonal tubes embeded two distinguish elements- air and sun, or in order words, fire and water. They meet at the center point where the horizontal tube lash them together bringing a harmonizing spacial environment

How would you describe the relationship between Spring Quarter and Winter Quarter, in terms of project development?

How did your instructor organize Spring Quarter to aid your development of your work?

The short story development and the warm-up project during Winter Quarter helps anchoring down the “thesis” for Spring Quarter. I find it’s helpful to start with more conceptualized prompt during Winter Quarter since it’s allow me to test out different possibility and design be grounded/satisfied with the exploration. In term of Spring Quarter, the projects during this period mostly focus on the technical side such as integrated system, structure, facade. These assignment are usually break down to “chunk” which helps me feel less overwhelmed, and able to fully focus on the significant task.

Did ARCH 342 lectures, activities, or assignments influence your thinking or approach in your design studio project this quarter? If so, how? Do you have any suggestions for improving the integration of ARCH 342 and ARCH 353?

ARCH 342 Lecture and Lab has been helpful for my studio projects. It is helpful to learn about the innotive engineering solution that could bring architecture to further extend. The lectures that inform all the layers that contributing to design process, building process are precious. I really enjoy the guest speaker presentation, it helps me stay in touch with the reality of constructing a builing or designing.

Did ARCE 316 lectures, activities, or assignments influence your thinking or approach in your design studio project this quarter? If so, how? Do you have any suggestions for improving the integration of ARCE 316 and ARCH 353?

Because I am a transfer student at Cal Poly, I can’t make it on time with other student to take ARCE 316 or 315.

However, the ARCE 226 I am taking still help me a bit with understanding building structure.

Did Common Hour presentations and pin-ups influence your design studio project this quarter? If so, how? Do you have any suggestions for improving Common Hour in the future?

Common Hour presentations are essential for me to draw inspiration and connect with orther student. Although it is stressful before the pin-up, the conversation in break out room is usually intriguing and motivating. It is also nice to see everyone work and learn from each other.

What is one thing faculty can do in the FALL of 3rd Year, to help you in the SPRING of 3rd Year?

Based on your experiences over the past year, are there any aspects of “online” studio that you think should be continued when we return to in-person studio?

Recorded Lecture is one of the most helpful and important aspects that contributed to my education during these several quarters. I would find myself having a hard time understanding new material without the helps of these resources.I find it helpful being able to look back to software tutorial, feedback, and structure lectures as a new transfer student. Therefore, I would highly appreciate if lecture is recorded and being able to look back.

Write briefly about what you learned about architecture in the Two Quarter Studio.

As someone who usually start a project with the mantra “form follows function”, I realize it is not the only option that I have after enrolled in a “form create function” studio. It is believe that a sucessful building required to embody both function and form, yet starting a project by making form like sculpture or object doesn’t mean it can’t be functional.

Although this precedent has a smaller scale, it significantly influence my approach in designing the building. The ideas of contrasting a rigid outer shell with an organic inner core inspires me to introduce these chapels of elements into a rigid glass and steel box. The idea of reserving nature elements inside a manmade box also inspire me to think about the program of each elements

This project from OMA using the an “S-shape” glass helps avoid the fragility during the annelade process. Bending flat sheet of glass into wavy or corrugated shape increase the curtain/ screen stiffness and structural capacity which allow the panel to stand with minimum framing and mullion to help achieve maximum transperency.

The Rain Vortex is a significant inspiration because of it’s brilliant design. The artificial water fall is not only a signature feature, it also play an important impact on the environment, sounds, and humidity/ temperature

The brilliant techniques that make the Apple Campus more sustainable is this facade design.

In order to keep the apple signature all-glass facade, yet still maintain to draw air in the building. This operable mullion louver allow natural ventilation without the present of major operable window
