DEAR FRIENDS,

I am pleased to share this summary of our Arts for All! community engagement programs for 2015-2016. We started the season with our third annual public performance art project—Let’s Dance Boston/¡Bailemos! Boston—a celebration of social dancing in the heart of the city on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Over five nights, we offered free dance lessons each night in a particular dance style, and then presented a 90-minute performance by ensembles we brought in from across the nation. Over 5,000 people of all ages joined in the dancing and showed Boston at its best—diverse, united, and joyful. This past year, Arts for All! engaged over 16,000 people in 157 activities throughout the city of Boston.

We embarked on an important planning process, developing a three-year plan for Arts for All! The Community Engagement Committee grew to include many colleagues from our partner organizations, artists from our Neighborhood Arts programs and community leaders. After assessing the recent work and growth of our community programs, we came to some clear conclusions:

• Artistic resources are available to Celebrity Series to pursue additional growth

• Our partner artists, communities and organizations are eager for more programing

• Building our local, neighborhood-level communications and marketing skills is essential to future growth

• Our primary constraint is funding

In the end, we articulated five goals in this plan. We will:

• Create a road map for investing in our Arts for All! programs

• Determine indicators of success—impact measurements—to help us track our work

• Strengthen our partnerships with artists and community partners

• Learn how to build audiences for our Arts for All! programs

• Secure increased funding for our programs

We are already working on the implementation of our plan and will report back to our board and our supporters regularly about our progress.

I am also very pleased to report that Celebrity Series posted another operating surplus for 2015-2016, and I am deeply grateful to our Board of Directors, staff, and all our supporters who made this accomplishment possible.

I invite you to join us in our effort to make the performing arts a valued, lifelong, shared experience—on stages, in schools, in homes—everywhere. You can start by participating in the first event of our next season, the return of Street Pianos Boston in the fall of 2016!

In the third installment of Celebrity Series’ annual public performance projects, Let’s Dance Boston offered a free, outdoor festival of five nights of live music and social dancing on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Following a group lesson taught by local dance instructors, a different top-notch band performed a 90-minute set for open dancing each night. The Greenway rocked with Latin, swing, disco, and salsa dancing and music, and over 5,000 people of all ages, abilities, and ethnicities participated.

You have people here young and old, all nationalities dancing having a good time. It’s almost [as if we] could teach the world to dance in perfect harmony what a better world it would be.”

NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS

Neighborhood Arts brings the joy of live performance to people of all ages and abilities, drawing deeply upon partnerships with community organizations to activate neighborhoods with a rich and varied array of opportunities.

ENGAGING LOCAL ARTISTS – Neighborhood Arts artists are a diverse group of locally-based ensembles experienced in working with youth and committed to community engagement. Artistdriven content is at the core of workshops and concerts.

CREATING COMMUNITY – Primarily based in Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, and the South End, Neighborhood Arts engaged community leaders from 46 community centers, local arts and social service organizations, schools, and more in the planning and implementation of artistic programming, with activities tailored to each partner’s needs.

ACTIVATING NEIGHBORHOOD SPACES – Neighborhood Arts featured 63 free events, including interactive artist-led workshops and community concerts in neighborhood venues. Neighborhood Arts activities took place in 24 local venues such as community centers, performance halls, churches, schools, and museums, reaching 5,207 people of all ages.

WORLD-CLASS PERFORMANCES – Neighborhood Arts partners were invited to attend Celebrity Series main stage performances free of charge. 934 individuals experienced some of the world’s finest classical, jazz, and dance artists.

The Soweto Gospel Choir presented a one-hour choral and movement workshop on South African repertoire with Boston City Singers, a Dorchester-based high school choir, for their families and Dorchester residents. Boston City Singers performed four songs for SGC: “Nelson Mandela,” “Asimbonanga,” “Emlanjeni” and “Shosholoza,” which they will sing in South Africa on tour during the summer of 2017. Boston City Singers and their faculty (65 total) also attended the Symphony Hall performance by Soweto Gospel Choir the following day.

240 CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES AND 25 HIGH SCHOOL DANCE STUDENTS SERVED

Alvin Ailey dancers presented three 50-minute movement lecture/demonstrations at schools serving children with physical and developmental disabilities and other special needs. Students heard a brief history of the company and saw excerpts from Alvin Ailey’s Revelations, Robert Battle’s Awakening, Kyle Abraham’s Untitled America and Rennie Harris’ Exodus. The dancers led students in warmup exercises and taught the students choreography to the popular song “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).” The dancers also presented an interactive master class for Boston Arts Academy dance students.

Through Take Your Seat, Celebrity Series makes performance tickets available to participants in Arts for All! programs. This includes school and community groups, families, and students. Tickets are available for free or at significantly reduced prices. The goal of the program is to break down barriers that limit access to the performing arts, including cost and physical access.

Street Pianos Boston 2016 is the return engagement of the popular art installation Play Me, I’m Yours, created by artist Luke Jerram. Celebrity Series first presented Street Pianos Boston in 2013, when over 500,000 people played and listened to music with their neighbors.

Street Pianos Boston 2016 will partner with over 100 arts, youth, community service, and civic organizations to place 60 pianos, painted by local artists, in neighborhoods across Boston and Cambridge. Since 2008, Play Me, I’m Yours has been installed in more than 50 cities around the world and has reached more than 10 million people.
