Prefecture of Rodopi It is the second prefecture of Thrace.

Rodopi is an area of ​special interest, many natural beauties (lakes Vistonida and Ismarida) rich flora and fauna, archeological sites, traditional villages and important history. The capital is Komotini, a city with a long historical path in which the Christian and the Muslim element coexist harmoniously.

Built at the foot and slopes of Ismaros, the area has been inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC. It experienced its great period of prosperity in the 4th c. e.g. due to its geographical and forest wealth but also its commercial activity, with the particularly famous "Maronite wine"

Porto Lagos Serene fishing village built on the narrow peninsula that separates Lake Vistonida from the sea. Legend has it that in the innards of Vistonida were the stables of Diomedes' cannibalistic horses, which Hercules managed to capture by carrying out his eighth feat.

Lake Vistonida.

It is protected by the Ramsar Convention and has a rich avifauna. Together with Lake Ismarida and the Nestos Delta, they form the National Park of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. At various points in the lake, flamingos, herons, cormorants and copperpoxes fly near visitors and researchers studying the populations of these birds.

Komotini Komotini is a provincial town with 60,000 inhabitants. It is located in Western Thrace and is the capital of N. Rodopi.

Typical buildings in the city center.

The Byzantine fortress The fortress and the Byzantine wall are considered the largest and most ancient monument of Komotini. It was built in the 4th c. A.D. for economic and military reasons and from here the Egnatia Road passed. The wall remained intact until 1363 when the Ottomans during their invasions destroyed part of the castle. In 1910 the Bulgarians demolished the towers and a large part of the remaining wall.

Today it remains a monument reminiscent of the glorious past of the city.

The Clock Tower.

Its tower in the city center Clock was built in 1884 by Abdul Kadir Kemal Pasha. The clock tower is part of the main mosque of the city which is known as Yeni Camii, ie the new Mosque.

Archaeological Museum of Komotini In the museum there are exhibits from the wider area of ​Thrace from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period.

Ecclesiastical museum of Komotini.

It is one of the oldest surviving Ottoman monuments in Europe. It dates between the beginning of the 1360s and the end of the 14th century. It was built by the Ottoman conqueror Gazi Ahmet Evreno near the eastern walls of the Byzantine castle of Koumoutzina. Since 1999, the monument houses the Ecclesiastical Museum of Maronia in the city.

Folklore museum

It has been operating since 1962 and is housed in the mansion Peidi which is a typical example of local folk architecture.
