S

er madres no es una tarea fácil. Criar a un niño, darle valores y hacer todo lo posible para que viva en un mundo mejor son algunas de las tantas tareas de millones de mujeres en el mundo. Pero si además, esa mujer cuenta con una profesión fuera de lo común, entonces, no sólo la convierte en una madre ejemplar sino en una mujer extraordinaria.

Ese es el caso de Alejandra, una mexicana nacida en Celaya de 27 años, de profesión militar.

Alejandra decidió ingresar en la carrera de militar siguiendo los pasos de su esposo Julián. Fue en una misión 6 | Mayo 2017 | Vive Michigan

en Afganistán, en donde estuvo durante un año, cuando los pensamientos de quién cuidaría de su esposo o quien lo auxiliaría en la zona de guerra si le sucedía algo, lo que la llevó a tomar la decisión de ser parte también del servicio militar.

Y esa es su tarea hoy allí como “Especialista de salud”: brindar auxilio médico en la zona de guerra para que la familia de los militares tengan la tranquilidad de que ella, como otros compañeros, estarán allí para cuidar de los suyos.

Su profesión le ha permitido llevar muchos de esos valores a la crianza de su hijo Julián, de cinco años, y a los gemelos que espera para los próximos

meses.

“Ser militar me ha enseñado muchos valores y algunos los aplico desde mi niñez. Por mencionar algunos de ellos, la disciplina, la responsabilidad y la hermandad. El no darme por vencida hasta que la misión esté cumplida dando el 100% de mi por el bien de mis camaradas y nuestra nación sin aceptar una derrota” nos cuenta Alejandra quien intenta aplicar estos conceptos en su día a día como mamá en la educación de su hijo y en las actividades diarias.

Si bien la gran dificultad que ve Alejandra en su trabajo es el hecho de estar siempre al día de los avances médicos y de las restricciones que puede haber dentro de su participación en una intervención médica, no hay dudas de que la mayor dificultad es el hecho de estar lejos de su hijo y de su esposo, lo que hace que se pierda largos períodos de tiempo del crecimiento de Ju-

lián, además del no poder estar en fechas importantes junto a su familia como en cumpleaños, aniversarios o festivos.

Y aunque todo ello podría llevar a un reproche por parte de su hijo, sucede todo lo contrario: él se siente feliz y orgulloso de que sus padres sean “Sirs” –nombre que Julián le da a los soldados y militaresqueriendo incluso adoptar ésta profesión cuando sea adulto.

Alejandra, como tantas otras madres, se sacrifican día a día por sentirse realizadas con su profesión, y por lograr equilibrar la vida familiar con la profesional, permitiendo así que sus hijos se sientan felices y completos de ver a sus madres cumplir su sueño. Pues para cualquier hijo, tener una madre con una vocación tan marcada como la de Alejandra, sin duda, hace que se convierta en una madre extraordinaria. ¡Felicidades!

The Important Role of Military Moms

eing a mother is not an easy task.

Raising children, giving them values and doing everything possible for them to live in a better world are some of the many tasks of millions of women in the world. But if, in addition, that woman has an unusual profession, then, not only makes her an exemplary mother but an extraordinary woman.

That is the case of Alejandra, a a 27 year-old Mexican military professional born in Celaya.

Alejandra decided to enter the military career, following in the footsteps of her husband, Julian. It was on a mission to Afghanistan, where he was for a year, when the thoughts of who would take care of her husband or who would assist him in the war zone if something happened to him, which led her to make the decision to join the the military.

And today, as a result of her reasons relating to her husband, she serves as a "Health Specialist": providing medical assistance in the war zone so that the fa-

mily of the military have the peace of mind that she, like other colleagues, will be there to take care of their own.

His profession has allowed him to bring many of those values to the upbringing of his five-year-old son, Julian, and the twins he hopes for in the coming months.

"Being in the military has taught me many values, many of which I have applied from my childhood. Among them, discipline, responsibility and sisterhood. “I do not give up until the mission is fulfilled, giving it 100%, for the good of my comrades and our nation, without accepting a defeat,� Alejandra tells us. Further, she tries to apply these concepts in her day-to-day responsibilities as a mother, and in the education of her child.

Although one of the great challenges that Alejandra sees in her military work is the fact always having to be abreast of medical advances and any restrictions that may exist during a medical intervention, there is no doubt that her greatest challenge is being away from her son and

her husband. She has had to endure missing long periods of time of Julian's growth, in addition to not being present on important dates with her family birthdays, anniversaries and special holidays.

And although one would think that all this could lead to reproach on the part of her son, the opposite is true: he feels happy and is proud that his parents are "Sirs" - a name Julian gives soldiers and soldiers - to the point of considering a military profession as an adult.

Alejandra, like so many other mothers, makes daily sacrifices that allow her to feel a sense of fulfillment with their profession, while achieving a balance between her family and her professional life.

Thus, their children feel a sense of happiness to see their mothers fulfill their dream. For any child, having a mother with such a respected vocation and profession as that of Alejandra, no doubt, makes her an extraordinary mother. Congratulations!

¿Sabías que cuando una persona fallece permite que con sus órganos se puedan salvar al menos 8 vidas de personas que esperan un trasplante para sobrevivir?

A

veces, por falta de información, no somos conscientes de la importancia que tiene la donación de órganos para salvar vidas. Cada 10 minutos en el mundo, una persona es añadida a la lista de espera de personas que esperan por un trasplante. Al mismo tiempo un promedio de 22 personas muere cada día debido a que ese órgano no ha llegado a tiempo.

Lamentablemente existen muchos mitos alrededor de la donación de órganos, lo que hace que muchas personas piensen que si se convierten en donadores de órganos entonces los médicos no le salvarán la vida para poder hacer uso de sus órganos.

La realidad muestra que no tiene nada que ver el hecho de que una persona sea donante con el trabajo que tienen que realizar los médicos.

Por otro lado, existen en todo el mundo programas de donantes específicos los cuales se harán cargo de todos los gastos propios que aparecen en la intervención de un trasplante de órganos, por lo que ni la familia ni el seguro tendrán que hacerse responsable de ello.

Otro de los grandes mitos es creer que cuando se le quitan órganos a una persona fa-

llecida, entonces su cuerpo se va a deformar y por ende no podrá recibir la sepultura debida. Nada de esto va a pasar.

El retirar un órgano de un cuerpo es como un procedimiento quirúrgico por lo que el cuerpo de la persona no sufre ningún tipo de deformación. No existe un límite de edad para ser donante y así ayudar a salvar la vida de los otros.

Ahora que conoces un poco más sobre la importancia de ser donante, puedes unirte a la fundación Michigan Organ Donor Registry en donde al suscribirte te convertirás automáticamente en donante de órganos.

En el momento en que te conviertas en donante, en tu licencia de conducir o en tu ID deberás colocar el sticker que tiene como logo un corazón para identificarte al resto de personas como donante del mismo.

Did you know that when someone dies, his or her organs - if donated - could save the lives of at least eight people waiting for a transplant to survive?

T

oo often it is this lack of information that results in the general population being unaware of the importance of organ donations to save lives. Worldwide, every ten minutes another individual is added to the waiting list of people in need of a transplant. At the same time an average of 22 people die every day because that organ has not arrived in time.

Unfortunately there are many myths about organ donations, among them that if they are designated organ donors it may prompt doctors to consider not saving their lives in order to use their organs to save other lives. This is obviously not true.

The reality is that a doctor’s job is to save all lives, and being an organ donor does

not affect their work on any given individual.

There are specific donor programs around the world that cover all the expenses related to the organ donation and transplant, so neither the family nor the insurance companies will have to be responsible for it.

Among another myth about organ donations is the belief that that when organs are removed from a deceased person, the will body will deform and potentially affect the deceased from being able to receive the proper burial. None of this will happen. Removing an organ from a body is a standard surgical procedure so the body does not suffer any type of deformation.

There is no age limit to be a donor and

thus help save the lives of others.

Now that you know a little more about the importance of being a donor, if you are interested, you can contact the Michigan Organ Donor Registry Foundation to learn more, and just by registering once you make the commitment, you will automatically become an organ donor. The moment you become a donor, your driver's license or your ID will include a sticker with a heart to identify others, including medical personnel. That you are a donor.

ealizar actividades junto a toda la familia tan sólo puede traer cosas buenas a nuestras vidas. Y si ese deporte a compartir es el béisbol, mucho mejor. La llegada de los partidos de temporada harán que junto a toda tu familia puedas vivir la intensidad de un partido alentando a un equipo local como lo es el equipo de West Michigan WhiteCaps.

La emoción, la preparación para ir al juego y la diversión que genera un partido de béisbol son algunos de los tantos motivos por los que se convierte en un plan ideal para ir con toda la familia.

he arrival of summer means more opportunities for family activities focusing on spending time with the family will only bring good things into our lives. And summer means baseball, a popular sport in the United States.

Locally, the arrival of summer and baseball will allow you and your whole family to enjoy the intensity of the game by watching and supporting our very own local team, the West Michigan Whitecaps team.

The preparation and excitement of going to a baseball game - and the fun generated by being at the baseball stadium with other families - are some of the reasons why it becomes an ideal family activity.

The day before a family outing to see the West Michigan Whitecaps, the family can prepare their attire for the game, including whether to wear a favorite baseball jersey, as well as prepare sandwiches

and other snacks for the day. Many families who go together to a baseball game like to wear baseball jerseys very similar to each other, making their choice of what to wear to the game a fun moment between the family members.

Before going into the baseball stadium, the family can exercise together to get into the right mindset and generate excitement. This can include doing some stretching and throwing the baseball around - this can be a lot of fun and a good way of “into the moment.”

Part of the fun of this activity can be supporting and rooting on the local team with noisemakers, large foam hands and other items with the local team’s logo on them . The more support the local team receives from their fans, the better they will probably perform. During the family’s preparation the previous day, they may decide to make a personalized sign (for the team, in this case the Whitecaps) to

take in hopes that both the players and the video/TV cameras will see them showing their encouragement and support.

But sometimes, by attending a Whitecaps game, on many occasions, they will have open workouts so their fans can get closer and see their home team prepare for the game. This is always a popular event.

A support system and social activity group can be good for you in several ways: • Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can help you stay on track.

• You can have people encourage you if you start to self-sabotage your nutrition plan or diet.

• By providing a way to relieve stress asso-

ciated with weight loss.

Dr. Agwunobi added, "Incorporating healthy eating habits and exercise into your daily routine can seem like a difficult undertaking because temptation is all around us.

From meetings filled with delicious pastries, to a comfortable bed calling our name after an exhausting day at the office, obstacles are everywhere. Staying on track can be hard, especially if you are tackling it on your own. Developing a support system of people who know your goals, strengths and weaknesses can be extremely beneficial in keeping a healthy lifestyle going."

The physical and psychological benefits of building or joining a community of like-minded individuals in pursuit of a healthy, active lifestyle is based in science. A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that people who regularly walk in groups have lower blood pressure, resting

heart rate and total cholesterol. The exercise also leads to a reduction in body fat and Body Mass Index (BMI). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) agrees. Regular physical activity, it points out, can reduce the burden of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers, and can prevent early death.

Physical activity can also help people with chronic diseases manage their conditions.

Any amount of physical activity is beneficial, the CDC added. Ideally, though, adults should do at least 2½ hours of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as walking), 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity, or a combination each week.

To achieve that, the CDC suggests you start a walking group with friends and neighbors. More than 145 million adults now include walking as part of a physically active lifestyle.

Ellos provienen de toda clase de antecedentes, profesiones, edades, géneros, razas y grupos étnicos.

Millennials Find Surprising Way To Help Others

Americans have discovered they can help others, learn new skills and feel good about themselves by volunteering to be first responders.

E

very 24 seconds, a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the nation.

Fortunately, America’s firefighters are on the job, saving life and property. Of the 29,980 fire departments in the country, 19,915 are all volunteer and 5,580 are mostly volunteer. Volunteer firefighters save communities nationwide an estimated $140 billion a year. Seven out of 10 firefighters and emergency responders are volunteers.

Even more good news is that many millennials those 18 to 35 years old have discovered volunteering to be firefighters can be a wonderful way to give back to their communities.

The Problem: Many local departments are struggling to meet staffing needs. Call volume has tripled in the last 30 years as fire departments’ roles in communities continue to expand, making the need for volunteers greater than ever. Yet many community members are unaware of this need. A National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) survey found 41 percent of respondents did not know that their department used volunteers and 79 percent did not know their department was looking for more volunteers. The NVFC is the leading nonprofit membership association representing the interests of the volunteer fire, EMS and rescue services.

An Answer: On the plus side, the NVFC survey found that 44 percent of millennials expressed an interest in volunteering as an emergency responder. For millennials, volunteering in the fire service provides a unique way to give back to the community while developing skills and experience that can contribute greatly to many aspects of their personal and professional lives.

Just about anyone can be a volunteer firefighter—they come from all backgrounds, professions, ages, genders, races and ethnicities. Certain departments may have specific requirements, such as a high school degree, a physical, and a background check, but when it comes down to it, volunteering as a first responder is all about having the heart and drive to make a difference where it’s needed most.

New recruits are trained by the department. Skills to learn vary based on the department’s response requirements, but training may cover a wide array of emergency situations such as fires, emergency medical incidents, terrorist events, natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents, water rescue emergencies and other public service calls.

El mayor reto para una consolidación de deuda exitosa es que "los malos hábitos son difíciles de romper". La consolidación de deudas no tiene ningún valor si el prestatario regresa a los mismos hábitos de compra y cobro exhibidos antes de la consolidación”, comentó Michael J Welch, presidente/CEO de University Credit Union.

Si su crédito es bueno y tiene el compromiso firme de no endeudarse más, podría proceder a la consolidación de su deuda.

Para esto tiene dos vías. La primera es tomar el saldo de una o más de sus tarjetas de crédito de alto interés y transferirlas a una tarjeta con una tasa de interés mucho más baja. Puede combinar múltiples deudas de tarjetas de crédito en una sola tarjeta de crédito con interés significativamente más bajo, por lo que sólo paga una cuenta cada mes que suele ser mucho menor que lo que pagaría sumando las de las demás deudas.

La segunda es solicitando un préstamo personal o préstamo sin garantía y utilizar el dinero para pagar sus tarjetas de crédito de alto interés. Con las tarjetas de crédito pagadas, la única deuda que tendrá que pagar cada mes, será la cuota del préstamo.

Una vez más, su objetivo es conseguir una tasa de interés lo suficientemente baja, a fin de pagar menos cada mes, y poder salir de la deuda más rápido ya que el interés no se acumula tan rápido.

Recuerde tiene que asegurarse de que está utilizando la vía correcta para sus circunstancias financieras únicas. Los pagos deben ser manejables para su presupuesto y siempre y cuando se apegue, no debería tener ningún problema.

Así lo reconoce Welch cuando dice que una consolidación de deuda exitosa se hace a medida para cada prestatario individual.

his article is written to let you know that not all debt relief options require you to hire a specialist or to join a program through a company. You may be able to personally deal with your debt problems.

However, you have to be careful when you use the different options that exist out there. If you are not careful, it can worsen your financial distress problems.

This month we will talk about Debt Consolidation.

This option consists of combining multiple debts at the lowest possible interest rate. Instead of paying several different bills each month, you only have to worry about one. At the same time, because the interest is lower, your debt will not grow as fast as it has been in the past.

However, there are two common mistakes you should avoid if you plan to use this debt relief option: 1. If you do not have good credit, you will not qualify for an interest rate that is low enough to provide you with a benefit. If so, you may have to consider other options for debt relief.

2. You must commit to avoid getting into more debt until you pay in full the amount of debt transferred. It is a common practice for people to start accumulating debt with high interest credit cards before they have fully paid off the amount of debt transferred, thus, it will make their situation worse.

"Debt consolidation is a very strategic and advantageous tool if used correctly. The biggest challenge to a successful debt consolidation is that “bad habits are hard to break�."The debt consolidation is absolutely not good if the borrower returns to the same purchasing and charging habits exhibited prior to the consolidation," said Michael J Welch, President / CEO of University Credit Union.

If your credit is good and you have a firm commitment not to borrow more, you could proceed to con-

solidate your debt. For that you have two ways to do it. First, take the balances of one or more of your high interest credit cards and transfer them to a card with a much lower interest rate. You can combine multiple credit card debts into a single credit card with significantly lower interest, so you only pay one account each month. The amount is usually much lower than what you would pay by adding up those of other debts.

The second way is to apply for a personal or unsecured loan and use the money to pay off the balance in your high interest credit cards. With credit cards paid, the only debt you will have to pay each month will be the loan installment. Again, your goal is to get a low interest rate, in order to pay less every month, and to be able to get out of debt faster because the interest does not accrue so fast.

Remember you need to make sure that you choose the correct one for your unique financial circumstances. Payments should be manageable for your budget and as long as you stick to it, you should have no problem This is what Mr. Welch recognizes when he says that a successful debt consolidation is custom crafted to each individual borrower. Where one consumer may need only consolidation of credit card and unsecured signature loan debt another borrower may need all debts including car loans and other installment loans rolled into a home equity loan or even a rewrite of their first mortgage. Needless to say that one particular way does not fit all situations.

To conclude the specialist advises us "to speak with the consumer credit counselor, who is trained and prepared to deal with individual solutions. Do not expect miracles or a "quick fix". The process can be a bit painful and time consuming, but most of the time the results are satisfactory and help us get back on track. "
