La violencia escolar y las noticias

s natural que a los niños y a los adolescentes les preocupe que les puedan ocurrir episodios de violencia en sus centros de estudios. Para ayudar a los niños a afrontar estos miedos, es importante hablarles sobre estas tragedias cuando ocurran y saber qué es lo que ellos escuchan y ven sobre ellas. Esto ayuda a poner la información sobre esas tragedias en su contexto.

Hable con su hijo Es importante que su hijo sienta que puede compartir sus sentimientos, y que sepa que sus miedos y ansiedades son comprensibles.

En vez de esperar a que su hijo le pida ayuda, considere la posibilidad de iniciar usted la conversación. Pregúntele qué sabe sobre esos sucesos y cómo se siente con respecto a ellos.

Comparta también sus propios sentimientos; durante una tragedia, los niños suelen observar las reacciones de los adultos. Les ayuda mucho saber que no están solos en lo que sienten. Saber que sus padres tienen sentimientos similares les ayudar a validar los suyos propios. Otra cosa que ayuda a que las escuelas sean más seguras es la mayor conciencia que existe en los centros sobre problemas como el acoso escolar (o bullying) y la discriminación. Ahora muchas escuelas disponen de programas para hacer frente a estos problemas, y tanto los profesores como la dirección están más preparados para proteger a sus alumnos de la violencia. ¿Cómo perciben los niños las noticias?

Por descontado, usted no es la única fuente de información sobre los tiroteos en las escuelas y otros acontecimientos trágicos que reciben la atención de los medios de comunicación. Es muy probable que los niños vean imágenes y oigan noticias en la televisión, la radio e Internet repetidamente, y esta información puede enseñarles a ver el mundo como un lugar confuso, amenazador e inhóspito.

De todos modos, cuando alcanzan la edad de 7 u 8 años, lo que ven por televisión puede parecerles demasiado real.

Algunos niños pueden interiorizar la crudeza de algunas noticias sensacionalistas y transformarla en algo que podría ocurrirles a ellos.

Un niño que escucha una noticia sobre un tiroteo escolar se puede preocupar, pensando cosas como: "¿Podría ser yo el siguiente? ¿Podría pasarme a mí?".

La televisión tiene el efecto de encoger el mundo e introducirlo en nuestras salas de estar. Al concentrarse en las historias violentas, las noticias televisivas también pueden favorecer el síndrome del "mundo cruel", que puede llevar a los niños a hacer una interpretación errónea de cómo es el mundo y la sociedad actual. ¿Comentar las noticias?

Para calmar los miedos que pueden transmitir las noticias, los padres deben estar preparados para ofrecer lo que los psicólogos llaman "una información clara, calmada, ine-

4. Prevea en qué momentos es necesario intervenir y evite los programas que no sean adecuados para la edad de su hijo o para su nivel de desarrollo.

erious incidents of school violence are terrible and frightening. Fortunately, they are rare. But it's natural for kids and teens to worry about whether something may happen to them or their friends.

To help them deal with these fears, it's important to talk about these tragedies when they happen, and to know what your kids watch or hear about them. This helps put frightening information into context.

Talking to Your Kids It's important for kids to feel like they can share their feelings, and know that their fears and worries are understandable.

Don't wait for your kids to approach you — consider starting the conversation. Ask what they understand and how they feel about it.

Share your own feelings too. During a tragedy, kids often look to adults for their reactions. It helps kids to know that they are not alone in feeling anxious. Knowing that their parents have similar feelings helps kids accept their own. At the same time, kids often need parents to help them feel safe.

What Schools Are Doing Talk with your kids about what schools do to help protect their students. Many schools are taking extra precautions — some focus on keeping weapons out through random locker and bag checks, limiting entry and exit points at the school, and keeping the entryways under teacher supervision. Others use metal detectors.

Lessons on how to deal with problems in non-violent ways have been added to many schools' courses. Peer counseling and other

programs help students learn to watch for signs that a fellow student might be becoming more troubled or violent.

Another thing that helps make schools safer is greater awareness of problems like bullying and discrimination. Many schools now have programs to fight these problems, and teachers and administrators know more about protecting students from violence.

Handling the Many Sources of News Kids and teens have many sources of information about school shootings or other tragic events. They might see or hear news stories or graphic images on TV, radio, or online, over and over. Such reports may teach them to view the world as a confusing, threatening, or unfriendly place.

The details of a news story about school violence can make some kids feel that might happen to them. A child might worry, "Could I be next? Could that happen to me?"

To calm fears, be prepared to tell the truth, but in a way that fits your child's emotional level. Don't go into more detail than your child is interested in or can handle.

Although it's true that some things can't be controlled, parents should still give kids the space to share their fears. Encourage them to talk openly about what scares them.

Older kids and teens are less likely to accept an explanation at face value. Their budding skepticism might hide the fact that they're bothered about a story. Your willingness to listen will send a powerful message and help them cope with these fears.

Tips for Parents

1.- Know where your kids get news and information, whether they're watching TV or going online.

2.- Recognize that news doesn't have to be driven by disturbing pictures. Public television programs, newspapers, or newsmagazines specifically designed for kids can be less sensational — and less upsetting — ways for them to get information.

3.- Put news stories in proper context.

Showing that violent events are isolated or explaining how one event relates to another helps kids make better sense of what they hear.

4. Know when guidance is needed and avoid shows that aren't appropriate for your child's age or level of development.

Los Voluntarios Se Ofrecen con Valor Para Proteger A Su Comunidad

uando ocurre una emergencia, las comunidades en todo Estados Unidos dependen de la estación de bomberos de su localidad para atender la situación. Lo que muchas personas no saben es que hay gran posibilidad de que las personas que responden a su llamada sean voluntarios.

Los voluntarios forman alrededor de 70 por ciento de los servicios de bomberos del país y dedican su tiempo y esfuerzo para ayudar a sus comunidades de una forma extraordinaria y llena de satisfacciones para ellos. Los voluntarios atienden

Volunteers Step Up to Protect their Community

hen an emergency occurs, communities throughout the United States depend on the local fire station to address the situation. One way they can do this is to join their local fire or emergency service department.

Seventy percent of U.S. firefighters are volunteers, dedicating their time and service to help their communities in an extraordinary and rewarding way. Nearly one million people have made the commitment to protect their community as a volunteer firefighter or EMS provider.

"Anyone can be a firefighter. We come from all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, and professions. All you need is the commitment and desire to serve. The department will provide the training," says

National Volunteer Fire Council chair Kevin D. Quinn.

Volunteer firefighters make up a crucial component of the emergency services in many communities and save taxpayers across the nation $140 billion per year.

They respond to all types of emergencies, including fires, medical emergencies, search and rescue, natural disasters, terrorist threats, hazardous materials incidents, and more.

In addition, support volunteers can help the department provide services such as fire prevention education and preparedness efforts.

Si estas en apuros con una deuda o tu calificación de crédito es un poco menos que favorecedora, aquí encontraras algunos pasos que puedes seguir para reparar o reconstruir tu crédito. Lo peor que puede hacer es ignorarlo.

Usted mismo puede tomar acción de su situación. ¿Cómo es posible esto? Cada persona tiene derecho a un reporte de su crédito anualmente sin costo alguno, así que reclame este beneficio, Una vez con el reporte este en su mano vaya a la sección que dice colección que es nada menos que el historial de lo que no ha pagado y de las compañías a las que les debe el dinero. Ármese de paciencia y tome el teléfono y comience a llamar a cada una y comience a hacer un trato con ellas. El peor esfuerzo es aquel que no se hace.

El especialista crediticio Ramiro Orta, quien tiene más de 15 años de experiencia en bancos, explicó que muchas personas desconocen que la mayoría de los bancos quieren recuperar por lo menos algo de lo adeudado así que estarán en anuencia a negociar con ustedes, solo se debe intentar.

Ramiro añadió que hay dos cosas que las personas deberían saber cuándo se trata de recuperar el crédito; la primera es que un mal crédito caduca después de 7 años, a partir de esta fecha sus antecedentes serán quitados de su historial así que los bancos no podrán usarlo para negarle una tarjeta nuevamente. El segundo aspecto es que una vez que usted haya arreglado su crédito deberá comenzar a hacer crédito nuevamente y para esto recomienda que coloque un monto de dinero en una cuenta de ahorros y pida un préstamo sobre ese dinero y lo mantenga por un período de 6 meses a un año. Durante este tiempo tendrá la ventaja de bajos intereses, una opción en caso de que necesite para algún arreglo del carro, el aire acondicionado o la casa y después del año el banco le ofrecerá una tarjeta de crédito.

Independientemente cual sea su caso, recuerde que tiene arreglo y para el futuro trate de tener más cuidado con su crédito y evitar que se convierta en una bola de nieve que no pueda detener.

Regardless what your case may be, remember that your bad credit can be fixed, and in the future be more careful with your credit to avoid a snowball effect that cannot be stopped.

How to prevent having bad? credit • Make your payments on time.

• Pay more or at least the minimum payment required.

• Do not lend your credit to anyone, the experts recommend that not even to members of your family.

i sentados, ni acostados, ni de pie logramos conseguir alivio una vez que el dolor se apodera de nuestro cuello. Es muy probable que a largo de nuestra vida hayamos sido presa fácil de este malestar.

El dolor de cuello no es nada menos que una sobrecarga en los músculos cervicales que produce dolor y el dolor a su vez causa más sobrecarga muscular, creando así un círculo vicioso.

A pesar de que la mayoría lo hemos sufrido, no todos lo experimentamos de la misma forma. Puede ser leve o agudo y localizarse en el cuello o extenderse hasta el brazo manifestándose como un disgusto similar a un hormigueo o un ardor.

Incluso puede llegar a producir fuertes dolores de cabeza y desaparecer en un par de días o prolongarse en el tiempo, limitando la capacidad para realizar nuestras actividades diarias.

Es común que no conozcamos con exactitud que lo ha provocado, puede ser el resultado de un movimiento brusco o en otras ocasiones aparece sin más. Y es que el dolor de cuello puede tener su origen en causas muy diversas.

Lo cierto es que más allá de cuál sea la causa, el dolor está presente y probablemente estés ansioso por librarte de él.

Posibles causas El doctor Jason Alvarez, quiropráctico nos habla de tres diferentes tipos de razones por la que una persona podría estar enfrentándose a este padecimiento. La primera seria la postura, como su nombre lo indica se debe a las malas posiciones a las que exponemos a nuestro cuerpo cuando estamos dormidos, frente a una computadora, cuando texteamos e invertimos largas horas en las redes sociales o simplemente sujetamos nuestro teléfono con el hombro cuando hablamos.

La segunda causa es lo que experto llama muscular que es cuando los músculos se engarrotan o se ponen tensos debido al estrés.

La tercera razón se conoce como el nervio pinchado que es cuando uno de los huesos del cuello se ha rotado, acá será trabajo del quiropráctico volver el hueso a su lugar.

Las estadísticas revelan que el 70 por ciento de la población padecen de dolor de cuello siendo las malas posturas y la tensión nerviosa las causas más frecuentes. En la segunda, el especialista enfatiza la existencia del estrés físico, el cual puede corresponder a un accidente de carro o una caída y el estrés

emocional que involucra la preocupación por las finanzas, nuestras relaciones de pareja o por el trabajo.Saber con certeza lo que causa el dolor de cuello nos ayudará a establecer las alternativas más adecuadas para su tratamiento.

¿Es posible la prevención?

La mayoría de las ocasiones la prevención del dolor está en nuestras propias manos, basta con tomar las medidas necesarias para lograrlo.

El experto aconseja que debemos hacer ejercicios de estiramientos de nuestro cuello para evitar que haya rigidez o las articulaciones se sellen y se pierda la movilidad. De esta manera, Álvarez recomienda hacer los ejercicios dos veces al día si usted es una persona que trabaja largas horas frente a una computadora o está bajo mucho estrés, de suceder lo contrario, siempre y cuando usted se ejercite y tome agua, podría hacer la rutina dos veces a la semana.

Asimismo no recomienda el uso de medicamentos contra el dolor, que a su criterio aplacará el problema temporalmente pero no lo eliminará. Con solo mantener la movilidad en esta área del cuerpo es muy probable que usted le diga adiós a este común pero molesto dolor de cuello.

Consejos para prevenir o aliviar el dolor • • • • •

Mover la cabeza para arriba y para abajo por unos minutos.

Mover la cabeza de un lado para el otro haciendo presión con las manos.

Subiendo los hombros y comprimiéndolos para luego dejarlos caer.

Frente a una computadora mantenga su cabeza al frente.

Tratar de no tener la cabeza hacia abajo por mucho tiempo, ya sea texteando,

• Utilizar métodos de relajación o masajes sobre todo cuando enfrenta estrés.

o sitting down, lying down, or standing can relief the pain once it takes over our necks.

It is very likely that through our lives we may have suffered from that discomfort.

Neck pain is caused by straining the cervical muscles and the pain in turn puts a more pressure in the muscles, creating a vicious cycle.

Although most of us have suffered from it, not all experience pain in the same manner. It can be mild or severe and can be either in the neck or can also extend to the arms creating tingling and burning sensations.

It can cause severe headaches that disappear in a few days or may last longer limiting our mobility to perform our daily activities.

Sometimes we do not know what the exact cause is; it could be the result of a sudden movement or sometimes appears with no apparent cause. Neck pain can happens for a variety of reasons.

The truth is that beyond what causes it, the pain is present and we are eager to get rid of it. However, keep in mind that just as there are many causes and symptoms, there are several ways to treat it.

Possible Causes Dr. Jason Alvarez, chiropractor, talks of three different reasons why a person might be suffering from this disease. The first would be postural and as its name suggests is due to poor posture. This may result by sleeping with neck in a bad position, working at the desk with the computer for too long.

Furthermore, texting, spending long hours on social media or simple holding the phone between ear and shoulder while talking.

The second cause is what is called muscular and it is when muscles are stiff or tense due to stress.

The third reason is known as pinched nerve that is when one of the bones of the neck gets out of place and the chiropractor will work to bring the bone back to its place.

Statistics reveal that 70 % of the population suffers from neck pain due to poor posture and tension which are the most frequent causes. On the later, the specialist emphasizes the existence of physical stress, which may have caused by a car accident, a fall, or emotional stress caused by financial burden, relationship with our spouse or partner or work related stress.

Identifying the causes will help us what treatment will be appropriate.

Is prevention possible?

Most of the time preventing neck pain is in our own hands; just taking the necessary measures help us stay healthy.

The expert advised that we do neck stretching exercises to avoid stiffness and loss of joints mobility. Alvarez recommended to exercise twice a day if you work long hours at a computer or are under a lot of stress. If that is not the case and you exercise and drink water, you could do neck exercise routines twice a week.

He does not recommend the use of pain medication, which in his opinion, will only bring temporary relieve but it will not eliminate the problem.

Just keep doing exercises and most likely you will get rid of this common but annoying neck pain.

Tips to prevent or relieve neck pain • Move your head up and down for a few minutes.

• Move your head from one side to the other using hand pressure.

• Raising the shoulders, holding them up, and then letting down.

• In front of a computer sit straight with your head up.

Grilled Flank Steak with Grapes and Stilton Servings: 6

1 flank steak (2 pounds)

kosher salt freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon chopped shallot 1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 2 bunches (8 cups) watercress, trimmed 1/2 cup crumbled Stilton or other blue cheese 2 cups red California grapes, halved Heat grill to high and oil grates.

Sprinkle steak with salt and pepper.

In small blender or food processor, combine vinegar, shallot, mustard and olive oil to make dressing. Season with salt and pepper, and puree until smooth.

Grill steak until it reaches 130 F for mediumrare, about 6-7 minutes per side. Transfer to cutting board and let rest 5 minutes.

In large bowl, combine watercress, salt, pepper and enough dressing to coat. Thinly slice steak across the grain and transfer to platter.

Top with watercress, Stilton and grapes, and serve with additional dressing.

esponsibility, discipline and a good attitude towards studying will result in good habits to do school homework. Like anything else, good habits should be taught at home and to do that parents have to take the necessary steps to achieve good results.

At the beginning will not be easy. There will be days in which there will more resistance to do homework than others. It is a daily process and parents cannot ignore that fact.

According to Ms. Marisel Elías-Miranda, Doctor in Education, children need repetition so they can maintain good habits. The expert recommends to designate an area where there are not distractions and with well lighted. The area should also be clean and organized with all the necessary materials to do homework such as pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners and a computer. The designated area could be a desk in the child’s room, a dining room table or located in the family room. It is important that the child can focus, said Dr. Elias-Miranda.

Developing good habits is important because nowadays children and young people face different situations when doing their homework at

home. Below are some of the different scenarios that could be present: Parents engaged in discussions that prevent children from focusing.

Some parents tend to do the homework for their children.

Lack of supervision that will result in parents not knowing what their children are learning.

Children finishing homework quickly so they can play. This may be the result of not having established rules concerning studying and playing times.

On the latest point, there has to be a balance between the two activities.

"While parents encourage their children to complete tasks and do additional reading at home, they have to keep in mind that children had already a long and perhaps exhausting day of learning at school, and they need some free time", advised the expert.

It is important that children develop good study habits and they also have time to play which help them with their social, emotional, and physical growth.

Tips to develop good study habits • Prepare a place at home where children do homework every day.

• Prepare school materials so they are available daily.

• Set up time for homework, monitor children and follow up every day so a pattern can be established.

• Remind children the importance to turn in homework on time.

• Eliminate all distractions such radio, television and telephones. Parents must be strict when enforcing the rules, thus children can concentrate.
