Niños Bilingües aprenden mejor los nuevos idiomas

os niños bilingües aprenden otros idiomas con mayor facilidad más adelante en la vida que los que solo hablan un idioma, informan los investigadores.

En el nuevo estudio de tamaño reducido los investigadores incluyeron a 13 estudiantes universitarios que aprendieron inglés y mandarín a una edad temprana, y a 16 estudiantes universitarios que solo hablaban inglés.

Los estudiantes bilingües fueron más capaces de aprender un nuevo idioma a lo largo de una semana que los estudiantes monolingües, encontraron los investigadores.

Unos escáneres cerebrales revelaron diferencias significativas entre los dos grupos en los patrones de ciertos tipos de ondas cerebrales.

Bilingual Kids Learn New Languages Better

ilingual children have an easier time learning additional languages later in life than those who speak only one language, researchers re-

port.

For a new, small study, researchers included 13 college students who learned English and Mandarin at a young age, and 16 college students who spoke only English.

The bilingual students were better able to learn a new language over the course of a week than the monolingual students, the investigators found. Brain scans revealed significant differences between the two groups in patterns of certain types of brain waves.

"The difference is readily seen in language learners' brain patterns," said senior researcher Michael Ullman. He is a professor of neuroscience at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. "When learning a new language, bilinguals rely more than monolinguals on the brain processes that people naturally use for their native language," Ullman explained in a university news release.

And, lead study author Sarah Grey noted, "We also find that bilinguals appear to learn the new language more quickly than monolinguals." Grey is an assistant professor of Spanish and linguistics, and director of thelanguage program at Fordham University in New York City.

"There has been a lot of debate about the value of early bilingual language education," Grey said in the news release.

"Now, with this small study, we have novel brain-based data that points towards a distinct language-learning benefit for people who grow up bilingual."

The researchers studied Mandarin-English speakers because both languages differ structurally from the new language used in the study. The language was an artificial version of a Romance language, Brocanto2, that the students learned to both speak and understand. Use of an artificial language allowed the researchers to control the students' exposure to it, the study authors noted.

id you know that more than 23 million American adults have never had an eye exam? The National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute (NEI) urges all Americans to make vision a focus.

Take steps to protect your vision today, so you can see the people and things you love for years to come.

Get an eye exam—Since many eye diseases and conditions have no early symptoms, an eye exam is the best way to find out how healthy your eyes are and if you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have an eye exam.

Eat eye-healthy foods—The foods you eat can help you protect your vision. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables—especially dark, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and collard greens—as well as fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, tuna and halibut.

Give your eyes a rest—Spending a lot of time in front of a computer can tire out your eyes. Remember the 2020-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen and focus on something that’s at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Know your family’s eye health history—Ask your family members about their eye health. Because most eye conditions run in the family, knowing your family history can help you tell if you’re at higher risk. If you learn that someone in your family has an eye disease or diabetes, talk to your eye doctor.

Wear sunglasses—even on cloudy days! Sunglasses can protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. When buying sunglasses, look for ones that block at least 99 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation.

Ndumele, cardiólogo, es un profesor asistente de medicina en la Johns Hopkins. Él y su equipo rastrearon datos de los niveles de actividad de más de 11,000 adultos. Start Exercising to Cut Your Heart Failure Risk

A

ttention, middle-age couch potatoes: There's still time to lower your risk of heart failure, a condition affecting more than 5 million Americans.

Getting the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity can reduce your risk in just six years, according to new research from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

On the flip side, as little as six years of sedentary living increases your odds for the condition, which is the leading cause of hospitalization in people over age 65.

"In everyday terms our findings suggest that consistently participating in the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week, such as brisk walking or biking, in middle age may be enough to reduce your heart failure risk by 31 percent," study senior author Dr. Chiadi Ndumele said in a university news release.

"Additionally, going from no exercise to recommended activity levels over six years

in middle age may reduce heart failure risk by 23 percent," he added.

Ndumele, a cardiologist, is an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins.

He and his team tracked data on the activity levels of more than 11,000 adults.

Each participant was monitored for heart attack, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related events for an average of 19 years.

During that time, nearly 1,700 people were hospitalized and 57 people died due to heart failure.

Unlike a heart attack, when heart muscle dies, heart failure is a chronic condition. It means the heart has trouble pumping blood and oxygen throughout the body. Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and smoking.

As part of the study, the participants were divided into groups based on how much exercise they reported getting each week.

The most active said they got at least 75

minutes of vigorous activity or 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week. Intermediate exercisers got between 1 and 74 minutes of vigorous activity or up to 149 minutes of moderate activity. The least active people reported no physical activity at all.

Initially, 42 percent reported getting recommended amounts of exercise; 23 percent were intermediate exercisers; and 35 percent were sedentary.

Six years later, 24 percent of the participants had increased their activity; 22 percent were doing less; and 54 percent were exercising as before.

Those who got the recommended amount of physical activity throughout the study were 31 percent less likely to develop heart failure than those who consistently got no exercise, the researchers found.

Be Trying To Tell You Something Your brakes may be squealing on you. If so, it’s safe to say, you should listen to them.

f your brakes are trying to tell you something, you should pay attention. A properly operating brake system helps ensure safe vehicle control and operation and it should be checked immediately if you suspect any problems.

“While an annual brake inspection is a good way to ensure brake safety, motorists should not ignore signs that their brakes need attention,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Knowing the key warning signs that your brakes may need maintenance will go a long way toward keeping you and others safe on the road.”

What To Watch Out For Motorists should look for the following warning signs that their brakes need to be inspected: • Noise: screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.

• Pulling: vehicle pulls to one side while braking.

• Low Pedal: brake pedal nearly touches the floor before engaging.

• Hard Pedal: you must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.

• Grabbing: brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.

• Vibration: brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking conditions.

• Light: brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.

Because brakes are a normal wear item on any vehicle, they will eventually need to be replaced. Factors that can affect brake wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. Be sure to avoid letting brakes get to the metal-to-metal point as that can mean expensive rotor or drum replacement.

The Car Care Council offers a free custom service schedule and e-mail reminder service to help car owners remember to have their brakes inspected and take good care of their vehicles. It’s an easy-to-use resource designed to help motorists drive smart, save money and make informed decisions.

The Car Care Council is also the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.

Marinada de Ajo y Chipotle:

Porciones: 6-8

1 filete de entraña (2 libras), sal kosher, 14 dientes de ajo pelados, 1 cebolla blanca mediana en cuartos, 1 1/2 taza de cerveza mexicana ligera, 3/4 taza de aceite de oliva, 1 cucharada de pimienta gruesa, 4 cucharadas de Salsa Tabasco Chipotle Pepper , 1 cucharadita de sal, 2 bistecs de carne arrechera (1 libra cada uno)

Marinada Dulce Chipotle: 8 dientes de ajo, pelados, 1 pimiento morrón rojo, desvenado y sin semillas, 1 cebolla blanca pequeña, 1 cucharadita de canela molida, 1 cucharadita de páprika ahumada, 8 cucharadas de aceite de oliva, 8 cucharadas de jarabe de agave, 4 cucharadas de jugo fresco de limón, 1 1/4tazas de jugo de naranja, 1 1/4 tazas de agua fría, 4 cucharadas de Salsa Tabasco Chipotle Pepper, 2 libras de camarón extragrande, pelados, desvenados y sin las colas, 4-6 pechugas de pollo sin piel deshuesadas, Sal, al gusto.

Para preparar la marinada de chipotle y ajo: En una licuadora, mezcla el ajo, la cebolla, la cerveza, el aceite de oliva y el pimiento morrón y hazlos puré. Vierte el puré en un plato hondo para mezclar; agrega la salsa de chipotle y sal.

Coloca los bistecs en bolsas de plástico para sellar y vierte la marinada.

Nota: El tiempo para marinar depende del corte de res seleccionado. Para fajitas y carne arrechera, marina durante por lo menos 6 horas.

Para preparar la marinada de chipotle dulce: En una licuadora, mezcla el ajo, el pimiento morrón, la cebolla, la canela, la paprika, el aceite de oliva, el agave, el jugo de limón, el jugo de naranja, el agua y la salsa de chipotle y hazlos puré.

- 14 garlic cloves, peeled - 1 medium white onion, quartered - 1 1/2 cups light Mexican beer - 3/4 cup olive oil - 1 tablespoon coarse black pepper - 4 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce - 1 teaspoon salt - 2 flank steaks (1 pound each)

Sweet Chipotle Marinade:

- 8 garlic cloves, peeled - 1 red bell pepper, de-seeded and stemmed - 1 small white onion - 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon smoked paprika - 8 tablespoons olive oil - 8 tablespoons agave syrup - 4 tablespoons fresh lime juice

- 1 1/4 cups orange juice - 1 1/4 cups cold water - 4 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper S. - salt, to taste - 2 pounds extra-large shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails on - 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

To make Garlic Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, onion, beer, olive oil and pepper. Transfer puree to large mixing bowl; add chipotle sauce and salt.

Place steaks in re-sealable plastic bag and pour in marinade.

Note: Marinating time depends on the cut of beef selected. For fajitas or skirt steak, marinate at least 6 hours.

To make Sweet Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, bell pepper, onion, cinnamon, paprika, olive oil, agave, lime juice, orange juice, water and chipotle pepper sauce.

In separate re-sealable plastic bags, divide marinade over chicken and shrimp. Allow shrimp to marinate 8 hours and chicken 24 hours.

Serving suggestion: Place steak, shrimp and chicken on large platter and serve with side items such as fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, grilled onions, fresh limes and fresh corn tortillas.
