l día del padre es una celebración anual a los padres y las contribuciones que hacen a sus familias. Los padres reciben lo que merecen en su día, cuando hijos, hijas y esposas, típicamente, le dan a los padres algunos regalos para mostrar su aprecio por todo lo que ha hecho por ellos y cuánto significa para ellos.

Encontrar el regalo del día del padre no siempre es fácil. Dos papás no son la misma persona, entonces mientras para uno una corbata le hará sonreír, este regalo no tendrá el mismo efecto en otro papá.

Even if Dad is an early adopter who tends to get all the latest gadgets before anyone else, the tech industry evolves so rapidly that you're bound to find something new on Dad's wish list that he hasn't purchased yet.

De hecho, las enfermedades cardiacas, son la causa número uno de muertes en EEUU entre hombres y mujeres quitándole la vida a 610.000 personas cada año.

En un país, en donde por décadas los pobres hábitos alimenticios han sido parte de la vida de millones de personas cuyos alimentos generalmente han sido procesados o con alto contenido de sodio, azúcar y grasa, con el pasar de los años se ha tratado de informar acerca del daño que estos alimentos hacen a la salud y poco a poco se ha tratado de incentivar un estilo de vida saludable para prevenir una muerte temprana causada por enfermedades crónicas.

Uno de estos sitios es el Downtown Market Grand Rapids, que desde el 2013 comenzó a funcionar en el 435 de la Ionia Ave SW en la ciudad de Grand Rapids y cada año casi un millón de personas visitan la edificación de 138.000 pies cuadrados.

De acuerdo con Mimi Fritz, presidente y CEO del Downtown Market, al lugar llegan visitantes de todas partes del estado.

“No sólo es un lugar que ofrece una gran variedad de comidas, que van desde tacos, comida de Tailandia, hasta diferentes tipos de pescados, creados en los diferentes locales de comida que existen en el lugar, sino un lugar para la comunidad”, agregó.

Y es que el Downtown Market Grand Rapids además es un sitio en donde aparte de tener un mercado y un invernadero para cultivo de vegetales, ofrece diferentes servicios para la comunidad como clases de cocina que se enfocan en la ali-

mentación sana y eventos privados como bodas, incubadora de cocina para que los empresarios pequeños que quieren comenzar un proyecto de negocio pero no los tienen, tengan el acceso a estos, dos restaurantes de servicio completo y 22 proveedores de productos en el interior de su sede.

“Este es un sitio para la comunidad, en donde muchos de los restaurantes utilizan los productos que se cultivan en nuestro invernadero, ofreciendo así diferentes tipos de comida sana y sobre todo local”.

A pesar de ser un proyecto relativamente nuevo, el Downtown Market Grand Rapids se ha convertido en el destino ideal para comprar comida local, fresca y sana, en donde se mezcla la producción, distribución, mercadeo y educación sobre el cultivo de vegetales y la importancia de la comida local sana.

“Es critico que las personas o familias que nunca han venido acá sepan que este es un lugar para la comunidad, en donde la puerta está abierta para cualquier persona que quiera unirse para celebrar la alimentación sana”, dijo Fritz.

ccording to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), diseases and chronic conditions such as cardiac pathologies, cancer, type 2 diabetes and arthritis are the health problems that are most expensive to treat. Ironically, they are also the ones that are most preventable in this country.

In fact, cardiac diseases are the number one cause for death in the United States among men and women; every year 610 thousand people die because of heart-related conditions.

In a country, in which during decades, poor healthy habits have been part of the lives of millions of people, information about the damages that many foods cause has been tried to be promoted among many people. High levels of sodium, sugar, and fats are some of the foods that can cause many damages that’s why promoting a healthy lifestyle is a way to prevent an early death.

Even though it has not been an easy task, in many places in the United States, there are places that promote a healthy life style through local products, that are also fresh and healthy.

One of these places is the Downtown Market Grand Rapids, that has been functioning since 2013 at 435 Ionia Ave. SW in Grand Rapids. Every year, almost a million people visit the building that is 138 thousand square feet.

According to Mimi Fritz, President and CEO of the Downtown Market, visitors come from all over the state.

“It’s not only a place that offers different types of foods such as tacos, Thai food to different types of fish. Created in different stores that exist in one place, but it’s also a place for the community”, she said.

In addition to the market, the Downtown Market Grand Rapidst also has a greenhouse to grow vegetables, offers different services to the community like cooking classes focused on healthy eating and private events like wedding, kitchen incubator that small business owners can use to start their own business, when they don’t have access to a professional kitchen. It also has two restaurants with full service and 22 produce providers in the interior of the building.

“This is a place for the community where many of the restaurants use products that are grown in the greenhouse, offering healthy food and also, local food.”

Even though is a relatively new project, the Downtown Market Grand Rapids has become a destination to buy local, fresh, and healthy food where there is a mix of production, distribution, education and marketing at learning the growth of vegetables and the importance of local fresh food.

“It’s critical that people and families that have never been here always know that this is a place for the community, where the door is open for anybody that wants to celebrate healthy eating” , said Fritz.

l estado de Michigan alberga una gran cantidad de parques y lugares con atractivos turísticos idóneos para visitar durante el verano, algunos de estos son la encantadora isla de Mackinac Island ubicada en el norte del estado a unas 241 millas de la ciudad de Grand Rapids.

Anualmente miles de personas visitan la encantadora isla de Mackinac Island donde pueden encontrar impresionantes vistas del Mackinac Bridge y la ciudad de mismo nombre. La isla que cuenta con unas 8 millas de costas y un área de 3.8 millas cuadradas es libre de vehículos de motor, y como medios de transportes principales se utilizan bicicletas y carrozas antiguas acarreadas por caballos que le dan al lugar un ambiente de época y antigüedad. Con casas e iglesias al estilo victoriano y decenas de jardines con coloridas plantas, la isla tiene un encanto único, aun cuando algunos aseguran es un lugar encantado por espíritus de residentes del pasado.

Otros atractivos de la isla son la fortaleza de Mackinac Island, el museo de las mariposas, el arco de piedra, el cual es un orificio en una roca a gran altura del lago el cual se realizó naturalmente. Mackinac Island tiene varias dulcerías donde preparan chocolate fudge muy popular en el área. Así mismo, la isla alberga decenas de restaurantes, bares, tiendas y zonas de recreación para hacer la estadía de los visitantes más relajante. A la isla también se dan cita los amantes de deportes acuáticos como el kayak, competencias de veleros entre otros.

Para llegar a la isla de Mackinac Island se necesita viajar vía marítima de 10 a 15 minutos, ya sea en un bote privado o en algunas de las compañías de ferries que durante el verano ofrecen traslado.

Por su parte, el Mackinac Bridge con sus 26,372 pies de longitud y con una suspensión de 8, 614 pies es el tercer puente suspendido más largo de Estados Unidos y el más largo del medio oeste del país. El puente que cruza el estrecho de Mackinac en los Grandes Lagos (el lago Michigan y el lago Huron), constituye un verdadero atractivo para los miles de turistas que no se resisten a tomarle alguna foto desde algunos de los miradores hacia el puente, tanto en la ciudad de Mackinac como en la ciudad de Saint Ignace ubicada al otro extremo del puente en dirección sur-norte.

El Big Mac o Mackinac Bridge fue inaugurado el 1 de noviembre de 1957 y diseñado por el ingeniero David B. Steinman. Se estima que más de 11 mil 500 vehículos cruzan el puente diariamente.

he state of Michigan has plenty of parks and attractions to visit during the summer, one of which are the magical Mackinac Island, 241 miles north from the City of Grand Rapids. Every year, thousands of people visit Mackinac Island where they find breathtaking views of the Mackinac Bridge and the city of Mackinac. The island has eight miles of coastline and 3.8 square miles not accessible to motor vehicles, which is why bicycles are the main transport.

The bikes and old horse-drawn carriages give the island an old-timer atmosphere. The architecture in the houses and churches, along with its Victorianstyle garden with colorful plants, give the island the unique charm it is so well known for. Although some say is a place haunted by spirits of the past, you will not encounter a scary movie scenario on Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island is an attractive site for weddings, honeymoons and family vacations. Among all the islands hotels, cabins and houses turned inns, more than 1,300 rooms are available for rent.

Natural attractions include the scenery of Lake Michigan from Mackinac Island, museum of the butterflies, and stone arch.

Mackinac Island also has several attractions in the city like candy shops, where they make chocolate fudge very popular in the area. The island is home to dozens of restaurants, bars, shops and recreation areas for those looking

For those looking to enjoy the lake, the island offers a variety of watersports like kayaking, sailing, boating and swimming among others.

To reach Mackinac Island, it is a fifteen minute ferry or a ride on a private boat. Prices vary depending on the season, but in general it is very affordable.

Meanwhile, the Mackinac Bridge is 26,372 feet long and connects the upper peninsula to the lower, suspending 8,614 feet is the third longest suspension bridge in the United States and the largest in the Midwest.

The bridge stretches across the Straits of Mackinac in the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan and Lake Huron), and is a real attraction for thousands of tourists who cannot resist to take a selfie with the bridge. Both Mackinaw City and the city of Saint Ignace, which located at the other end of the bridge in south-north direction have good parks to enjoy the view of the bridge.

The Mackinac Bridge, nicknamed ‘Big Mac’ was opened on November 1, 1957 and designed by engineer David B. Steinman. It is estimated that more than 11,500 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

Disfrute de los diversos festivales que se ofrecerán en Grand Rapids en este verano

a casi llega el verano, una época perfecta para disfrutar en familia de los variados eventos que celebran la diversidad de Grand Rapids, ofreciendo festivales culinarios, de cerveza, arte, y cultura para la comunidad.

Por ejemplo, en el mes de junio se van a realizar 5 importantes festivales. Del 2 al 4 de junio se va a realizar el Festival of the Arts, un evento gratuito que desde hace varias décadas se celebra en la ciudad, en el cual el público podrá disfrutar de arte, música, danza, comida y mucho más, en el centro de la ciudad.

Luego, el 10 de junio en el Rosa Parks Circle se va a realizar el GR Asian Festival, en donde la comunidad podrá disfrutar de diferentes demostraciones culturales que van desde la danza de leones, artes marciales, música, origami y comida asiática, entre otros.

Una semana después, el 17 de junio, se va realizar el Founder Fest, en Founders Brewing Co., en Grandville. en donde los amantes de la cerveza podrán disfrutar de diversas variedades del licor, de música en vivo y comida. También el 17 de junio pero en Calder Plaza, se va a realizar The GR Pride Festival que empodera a la comuni-

dad LGBT (Lesbianas, Gays, Bisexuales y Transexuales) del oeste de Michigan a través de eventos musicales, de arte y actividades para grandes y chicos.

Y el 24 de junio se hará el Grand Rapids Water Festival en el Riverside Park, en el que de forma gratuita, la comunidad disfrutará de diversas actividades y música en vivo de varias bandas locales de música folclórica que enfocan su música en la preservación y cuidado del medio ambiente.

En el mes de julio, la ciudad tendrá dos importantes eventos: La Celebración del Día de la Independencia, el 01 de julio en el parque Ah-Nab-Awen de 5:00 a 10:30PM, en el que como cada año tendrá comida, música en vivo y diversas actividades recreativas, previas al espectáculo de fuegos pirotécnicos.

Después, el 20 de julio, en el mismo parque se va a realizar el festival de globos Grand Rapids Balloon Festival Night Glow de 6:00PM a 10:00PM en donde habrá música en vivo, comida y muchas actividades enfocadas en los globos aerostáticos que inundaran los cielos de esa parte de la ciudad.

Posteriormente durante el mes de agosto, la comunidad va a disfrutar de 3

importantes eventos. Del 19 al 20 de agosto en el Rosa Parks Circle se va a realizar el GrandJazzFest, un festival gratuito en donde se presentarán en vivo importantes exponentes locales y nacionales de este género musical y además las personas que asistan el festival, podrán disfrutar de buena música y diversas actividades.

La herencia Hispana y la polaca se harán sentir del 25 al 27 de agosto. En el Rosa Park Circle se hará Festival Polaco, en donde la comunidad podrá disfrutar de gastronomía, cervecería, música danza y artesanías provenientes de Polonia y en la Plaza Calder, se realizará el Festival Hispano de Grand Rapids, en el que se va a celebrar la diversidad de la cultura hispana con música en vivo, entreteniendo y diferentes actividades gratuitas para la comunidad.

Y para terminar la temporada de verano, se realizará la novena edición de ArtPrize del 20 de septiembre al 8 de octubre, el festival de arte más grande del país, que congrega a miles de artistas de diferentes partes del mundo en varias puntos del centro de Gran Rapids, convirtiendo a la ciudad en una gigantes galería urbana.

ummer is almost here, the time of the year that is perfect to enjoy with the family many events that will be celebrated in Grand Rapids. The city will offer cuisine, beer, art and culture festivals for the community. For example, during the month of June, five important festivals will take place. From June 2 through June 4, the Festival of the Arts will take place. This is a free event that has been celebrated for many decades in the city. The attendants will be able to enjoy art, music, dance, food and much more in downtown.

On June 10, at the Rosa Parks Circle, the Grand Rapids Asian Festival will take place.

The community will enjoy different cultural events that will range from the lion dance, martial arts, music, origami and Asian food.

A week after, on June 16, the Founder Fest will take place in Founders Brewing Company in Granville Ave. Beer lovers will enjoy a diverse variety of liquor, live music and food. Also, on June 17 at the Calder Plaza, the Grand Rapids Pride Festival will

take place that empowers the LGBT community (Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexuals) from West Michigan through musical and artistic events. The activities are suitable for old and young.

On June 24, the Grand Rapids Water Festival will be celebrated in Riverside Park in which the community will enjoy many activities and live music from local folkloric bands that focus their themes in the preservation and care of the environment. The event is free to the public.

In July, the city will have two important events. The celebration for Fourth of July which will take place on July 1ST at Ah-NabAwen Park from 5 pm to 10:30 pm. Like every year, there will be food, live music, and recreational activities before the fireworks show.

On July 10th, at the same park, there will be a balloon festival called Grand Rapids Balloon Festival Night Glow. The event goes from 6 pm to 10 pm and there will be live music, food, and many activities focused on hot air balloons that will flood the skies in that part of town.

Later, during the month of August, the community will enjoy three important events. From August 19 to the 20th at Rosa Parks Circle the GrandJazzFest will take place. This is a free festival in where many important representatives of local and national music will present their art. Also, the attendants will enjoy good music and a variety of activities.

Hispanic and Polish heritage will also have a presence from August 25 to August 27. At Rosa Parks Circle, the Polish Festival will take place and the community will enjoy food, beer, music, dance and crafts coming from Poland. At Calder Plaza, the Hispanic Festival of Grand Rapids will celebrate the Hispanic culture with live music, entertainment and different free activities for the community.

To end the summer season, the ninth edition of Artprize will take place from September 20 to October 8. This is the largest festival in the country and thousands of artists from the world attend the event. Grand Rapids, for a few weeks, becomes a giant art gallery.

He vivido en (Pure) Michigan mi vida entera; crecí en Jackson, pasé mi licenciatura en East Lansing y me mudé de Detroit a Ann Arbor hace poco más de un año. Con todo esto dicho, paso muchos fines de semana “Visitando Ann Arbor” y todo el año aprendiendo sobre cosas que me hubiera gustado conocer si habría vivido aquí.

Esta es mi lista de las 9 cosas divertidas para hacer en Ann Arbor 1. Las puertas de las hadas. Si no las conocer, lo más probable es que hayas caminado en frente de estas pequeñas puertas ubicadas en el centro de Ann Arbor en la parte delantera de muchas tiendas, cafés y galerías. A pesar de que “cazar puertas de las hadas” en Ann Arbor es una actividad perfecta para los niños, he visto a muchos adultos igual de emocionados cuando las descubren.

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN LAW SCHOOL QUADRANGLE, ANN ARBOR, MI

ydney Hawkins, Communications Director for the Ann Arbor Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, gives her recommendations on things to do and see in the Ann Arbor area. I've lived in (Pure) Michigan my entire life; I grew up in Jackson, spent my undergrad in East Lansing, and moved from Detroit to Ann Arbor just over a year ago. That said, I’ve spent many a weekend 'Visiting Ann Arbor,’ and a whole year learning about all the things I wish I would've known before I lived here.

Here’s my ‘Top 9’ list of fun things to do in Ann Arbor.

1. The Fairy Doors. If you don’t know about them, odds are, you’d probably walked right by these tiny doors, located throughout downtown Ann Arbor in various storefronts, cafes and galleries. Although going on a ‘fairy door hunt’ in Ann Arbor is a perfect activity for kids, I’ve seen adults just as excited to discover them.

2. The Farmers Market. The Ann Arbor Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 7 a.m.

- 12 p.m. (with extended hours during some weekends). If you're headed to a University of Michigan game or are just strolling the inconic downtown, I'd advise that you plan a grab-andgo breakfast at the market. I always get a coffee from Roos Roast, apple donuts from Kapnick Orchards, or an olive twist from Millpond Bakery.

3. The Dexter Cider Mill. 11 miles southwest of Ann Arbor, the Dexter Cider Mill is the oldest continuously operating cider mill in Michigan.

They're known regionally for their unique cider blend, donuts and other homemade apple goods (open Wed. - Sun., 9am - 5pm). Open since 1866, this family-ownded and operated mill is a

treat for locals and visitors alike.

4. The Huron River. If you're looking to get out on the water, a tour down the Huron River via kayak, canoe or paddleboard is the adventure for you. The Huron River is a calm waterway with a few riffles and sections of drops and pools fun for both beginners and watersports enthusiasts. Argo and Gallup Park Canoe Liveries are open every day from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. through the last week in October and the river makes for a beautiful scene when surrounded by snowy banks in the winter.

5. Seasonal Colors. For those looking to explore on foot – especially during the fall – I have a few favorite places to go: 1) Nichols Arboretum (aka ‘The Arb’ to locals) on UofM’s campus. 2) Gallup Park 3) Scio Woods Preserve 3) Hudson Mills MetroPark in Dexter (5) Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea. These locations offer breathtaking views during every month of the year, whether it be flowers blooming in spring or fantastic sheets of ice in the winter. Bring your camera!

6. University of Michigan’s Campus. I absolutely love exploring the U of M’s beautiful campus. If you have time while you’re here, stop into the U-M Museum of Art (free, open Mon. – Sat.) or the U-M Museum of Natural History (free, open Mon. – Sun.). If you’re looking for an abbreviated tour, central campus is a good place to start. You can easily see Hill Auditorium, The Michigan Union, Angell hall, Burton Tower, ‘the diag’, the West Hall Arch, the Clements Library and more in about a half hour. If nothing else, you absolutely must go to the ‘Law Quad’ and peek into the Law Library. You won’t be disap-

pointed.

7. Brew Tour. There are eight breweries in Washtenaw County. Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti always carries my favorite beer (ABC’s Phat Abbot Trippel), Wolverine State Brewing Company’s Tap room is a favorite local hang out, and Original Gravity in Milan is a hidden hoppy gem.

Honestly, they’re all amazing. Arbor Brewing Company, Grizzly Peak, Jolly Pumpkin and Blue Tractor are all within walking distance from each other downtown. Check out Michigan's expansive craft beer scene for more brewery ideas and tours.

8. Catch a game at the Big House or Crisler Center. There are plenty of places that are great for game-watching fun, but maybe none as iconic as the University of Michigan Football Stadium, more commonly referred to as the Big House. Attending an event at the largest college football stadium in North America or the nearby Crisler arena should be on every Ann Arbor visitor's bucket list. If you'd like to watch a game or event from the comfort of a restaurant, I recommend Banfield’s Westide Grill, Fraser’s Pub or Conor O’Neill’s. Aubree’s in Ypsilanti is a great spot too. Make sure to get there early to claim your spot!

9. Food. Everyone ALWAYS asks me where to eat in Ann Arbor. I never have a straight answer, mostly because there’s way too much to choose from, and I have way too many favorites. Here's my short list: the falafel wrap at Pita Kabob. The TLT at Seva. The Chicken Tortilla Soup at Le Dog. The salmon burger at Monahan’s. A slice of veggie pie at NY Pizza Depot. The #24 at Amer's Deli. And whenever I go to Ayse's Turkish Cafe, I always let her choose (because I can't).

En la medida de lo posible que esto sea una realidad, mejores resultados obtendrá a la hora de visitar a su médico. Es lo que los expertos conocen como ser un buen paciente.

A continuación el doctor Joaquín Barbara brinda una serie de consejos que podrían ayudarle a colaborar con su médico y mejorar su atención.

1. Piense lo que le va a decir al médico. Si es su primera visita, el médico le hará una serie de preguntas: qué le pasa, desde cuándo, qué enfermedades han tenido previamente tanto usted como sus familiares cercanos, qué hábitos tiene (tabaco, alcohol..).

Asegúrese de saber las respuestas. Si es necesario anótelas para que no pase nada por alto.

2. Lleve todos los informes médicos, radiografías y/o análisis que tenga. Lo peor que puede pasar es que su médico no los necesite, pero generalmente son muy útiles. Es de gran ayuda guardar todos esos informes en una carpeta y llevarlos a la consulta.

3. No oculte información. Sepa cuándo tuvo una cirugía, qué tipo de cirugía fue y dónde se hizo. Si ha sido hospitalizado, debe saber cuándo y por qué razón.

4. Lleve una lista con los medicamentos que toma incluya el nombre, la dosis y la frecuencia de cada uno.

5. Tenga una lista actualizada de alergias. Incluya a que es alérgico, así como lo que sucedió cuando recibió esa reacción alérgica y cuánto tiempo atrás era.

Tenga cuidado, muchas veces un paciente informa como alergia un efecto secundario de la medicación.

6. Enfóquese en el problema. Si usted va al médico para un problema agudo (por ejemplo, un dolor de oído o dolor abdominal) no espere también discutir varios otros problemas crónicos.

7. Intente averiguar con la mayor precisión qué enfermedades han tenido sus familiares más cercanos.

Make the Most of Your Visit to the Doctor

n important way to stay healthy is to actively participate in the care of your own health. What do we mean by this? It means that you should be aware of your own medical history to get the best results when you visit your doctor.

It is what experts call being a good patient.

Below is a series of tips offered by doctor Joaquin Barbara that could help you collaborate with your doctor and get his undivided attention.

1. Think about what you are going to tell the doctor. If it is your first visit, the doctor will ask you many questions: what happened to you, since when, what diseases you and/or a close relative have previously had, what habits you have (smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol). Make sure you know the answers. If necessary, write them down so that nothing is overlooked.

2. Take all medical reports. Take X-rays and/or tests you have had in the past. The worst thing that can happen is that your doctor does not need them, but they are ge-

nerally very useful. It helps to save all those reports in a folder and take them the date of your visit.

3. Do not hide information. Know when you had surgery, what type of surgery it was, and where it was done. If you have been hospitalized, you should know when and for what reason.

4. Keep a list of the medications you take. The list should include name, dosage and frequency of each.

5. Keep an up-to-date list of allergies.

Include what you are allergic to as well as what happened when you suffered the allergic reaction and how long ago it was. Be careful; many times, a patient reports a side effect to a medication as an allergy.

6. Focus on the problem. If you go to the doctor for an acute problem (for example, an earache or abdominal pain) do not expect to discuss other chronic problems as well.

7. Try to find out with great accuracy what illnesses your closest relatives may

have had. Many times, they say "my father had stomach cancer." It is not the same as cancer in the colon or in the pancreas. That can be a determining factor for your doctor to decide whether you need to be tested.

8. If you are prescribed a very expensive medication, call your doctor. Discuss with him whether there are less expensive alternatives to the medication he has prescribed. Older drugs are often significantly cheaper than new drugs.

9. Ask questions. You have the right to have all your questions answered by your health professionals. Ask questions about the new medications that have been prescribed, what they are for and what the common side effects of each are.

10. Find a primary care doctor that you like. It is very important that you have a good relationship with your doctor. If you feel inhibited by his or her personality or if he or she rushes and does not pay attention to you, look for another doctor.
