En el estado de Michigan, hay una gran variedad de granjas, por lo que Vive Michigan Magazine, habló con Scott Wells de Wells Orchards, una reconocida granja de manzanas y otros productos agrícolas, que ha estado abierta al público por casi 100 años.

Wells ha dedicado toda su vida a la agricultura, y hace parte de varias generaciones de granjeros en su familia, que durante las temporadas de primavera y verano preparan sus cultivos para ofrecer la cosecha de manzanas y

otros productos.

De hecho, desde julio hasta noviembre comienza la cosecha de manzanas, el cultivo más grande que ofrece la granja, con más de 25 variedades, pero como siempre, muchas veces las cosechas dependen mucho del clima de Michigan.

“Las frutas que cultivamos están relacionadas con el factor climático de los grandes lagos, los lagos hacen que se calienten un poco nuestros inviernos, evitando que se congelen nuestros cultivos como pasa en otros estados”, dijo Wells.

En las próximas semanas, la granja va a ofrecer a la comunidad del oeste de Michigan la cosecha de cerezas dulces, que marca el inicio de su temporada de frutas, las cuales pueden ser recolectadas por el público, durante este verano, al visitar la granja.

“Las cerezas dulces son las únicas frutas que en esta temporada la comunidad puede venir y recolectar de un árbol, pero luego vamos a tener para la venta albaricoques, peras, ciruelas y otros productos cultivados en la granja”, dijo Wells.

También en el mes de julio, Wells Orchards se prepara para ofrecer su cosecha de duraznos, su segundo producto más importante a parte de las manzanas.

De acuerdo con Wells, es importante que la comunidad aprenda donde se cultiva lo que se comen. “Muchas personas van al supermercado a comprar sus frutas y verduras, pero no saben dónde y en qué condiciones las cultivaron, nosotros ofrecemos mejores productos y más frescos que salen inmediatamente de nuestra granja”, agregó.

Y es que además de ofrecer sus frutas y vegetales en diferentes mercados campesinos del oeste de Michigan, Wells Orchards tiene su propio almacén, en donde venden una gran variedad de sus productos.

Para los Wells, cultivar su tierra, cosechar sus frutas y verduras no es solo un negocio familiar y un estilo de vida, sino también es una herencia e identidad familiar que ha permanecido en ellos, durante varias generaciones que les ha permitido poder enseñar a muchos la importancia de las granjas en el estado de Michigan.

ummer season has arrived, which means that millions of children and young people across the nation will be on vacation. Many parents, then, will have to start thinking what activities to do with their children in the next few months.

There are many options that start with camps or trips to other parts of the state, but have you thought about visiting an orchard? Visiting and buying from a local orchard not only supports a family that is dedicated to this noble job, but it also allows children and youth to learn about the production of fruits and other foods, especially learning about the importance of eating fresh foods grown in Michigan.

In Michigan, there is a great variety of farms, that’s why Vive Michigan Magazine talked to Scott Wells from Wells Orchards, a well-known orchard that grows apples and other agricultural products. The orchard has been opened for almost one hundred years.

Wells has dedicated all his life to agriculture and he is part of many generations of farmers in his family. During the spring and summer season, Wells prepares the harvest to offer apples and other products.

From July until November, apple harvesting begins, the biggest harvest that the farm offers with more than 25 varieties; but, in many instances, the harvest depends a lot on the Michigan weather.

“The fruits that we harvest are related with the climate factor from the Great Lakes; the lakes make our winters warmer, avoiding a freeze of our agricultural products.

The opposite happens in other states,” said Wells.

In the next few weeks, the farms will offer to the West Michigan community a harvest of sweet cherries, which marks the beginning of their fruit season. The public can pick these during the summer when they visit the farm.

“This season sweet cherries are the only fruit that the public can come and pick from a tree, but after that we will sell peaches, pears, plums and other products grown on the farm,” said Wells.

During the month of July, Wells Orchards will ready itself to offer peaches, their second largest product after apples.

According to Wells, it’s important that the community learns where the food they eat is grown. “Many people go to the supermarket to buy fruits and vegetables, but they don’t know where and in what conditions they were grown. We offer better and fresher products that come out of our farm,” he said.

Apart from offering fruits and vegetables in different farmers markets in West Michigan, Wells Orchard also has its own store where it sells a great variety of products. For the Wells family, to cultivate their land and harvest fruits and vegetables is not only a family business and a lifestyle but also a heritage that gives them a sense of identity that has been with them foe many generations. This has allowed them to teach many the importance of farms in the state of Michigan.

Fourth in growing grapes, Michigan has 13,700 acres of vineyards dedicated to brewing wine. Concord and Niagara are the most produced grapes in the state.

Thinking of traveling around the state and consider yourself a wine enthusiast? Michigan’s wineries are just right for you and offer variety in tastes and styles of wine. There are three major kinds of grapes that are brewed into delicious wines: Vinifera varieties, classic European Chardonnay (a green grape used for white wines originated its usage in French wines) and a local favorite, the hybrid varieties. This last wine is a delightful blend of French Vinifera taste and American flavor of native varieties like Niagara and Concord.

Traverse City has many wineries off the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. Brys Estate has upscale lounges overlooking a verdant landscape. Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery is one of the prominent locations in which to relax, while having a divine taste of their reserve beverages. Cabernet Franc and Merlot are ranked as the top choices for tourists. Visitors can taste premium wines at a low cost of $7 per person and receive five wine samples. The winery also offers private tours around the brewing facilities. Visitors might enjoy exploring the grounds and sitting outside in the breezy patios facing the estate’s dwellings off the Great Lakes. Converging across the vines, a bridge rises above more than 35 acres of grapes toward East Grand Traverse Bay. TripAdvisor ranks Traverse City Tours LLC the best wine-tasting tour in all of Michigan. It offers private and group tours all year in the northern Michigan area. Previous visitors label their experience “fun and knowledgeable guides” and “very enjoyable, very helpful explaining details of brewers” (based on TripAdvisor’s reviews). What makes the trip worth it is the minimal cost of $35 per person, a travel of four hours to Old Mission Peninsula, located in Grand Traverse County, stationed amid the open countryside.

Looking for a weekend of relaxation with friends or a few days’ getaway? Wine tasting and viewing the enchanting lakes are indulgent moments to cherish with the ones you love. Walking through Grand Traverse Bay can amuse visitors with sensual relaxation, sailboats on the bay, and vineyard observations around the coast of the bay.

Michigan wine sales have increased dramatically from 1997 to 2005, increasing 116% over nine years. Per Michigan Wines, wine industry companies have doubled the amount of vineyard land over the last 10 years. Wineries make up $300 million of Michigan’s economy annually. A report from MFJ Research LLC reported the economic impact of Michigan’s grapes and wine industry in 2005. It created 5,400 full-time jobs. Wine-related tourists numbered up to 800,000 people, emphasizing how valuable vineyard and wineries are to travelers who make their way to the water wonderland.

a crianza de los niños y la misión de dirigir una familia sin el apoyo de otro adulto trae desafíos que pueden resultar bastante estresante para el adulto como para el niño.

En la actualidad, los padres solteros son un grupo demográfico significativo en los Estados Unidos. Para el 2010, la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económico (OECD, por sus siglas en inglés) encontró que estas familias representan el 28, 3 por ciento de los hogares estadounidenses.

Durante los últimos 20 años las familias de padres solteros se han vuelto más comunes que las denominadas familias convencionales compuestas por la madre el padre y los hijos.

En la actualidad vemos toda clase de familias encabezadas por las madres, los padres o por los abuelos que crían a sus nietos.

Pero pese a la frecuencia de esta situación, los retos no dejan de abrumar al papá o la mamá quien tiene la responsabilidad de dividirse para ser padre, madre, juez, jurado, consejero y maestro a la vez.

En primer lugar, no tienes una figura principal en la que delegar o con la que repartirte el trabajo.

Así lo reconoce Martha González, madre soltera de tres niñas desde hace 4 años. Para Martha su labor como madre no ha sido fácil y en muchas ocasiones ha sentido desfallecer sus fuerzas al 18 | Julio 2017 | Vive Michigan

no contar con el apoyo de otro adulto dentro del hogar.

“Claro que tenemos más retos estando solos, porque hay una mayor presión y responsabilidad que si las tareas son compartidas por dos personas. Para eso he tenido que ajustar tiempos y rutinas para lograr el desarrollo, la educación y el bienestar de mis hijas de la mejor manera posible”, comentó esta mamá peruana, quien tiene más de 20 años de residir en Estados Unidos.

Otro de los grandes retos de los padres solteros es que tienen que ser su propio apoyo y sostén.

Y es que como cabeza de familia deben ser capaces de proporcionar alimentos, ropa, vivienda y mantener las cuentas al día.

“En una ocasión mi hijo Gabriel de 5 años enfermó de varicela así que solicité vacaciones para cuidarlo. Cuando se recuperó a la semana siguiente cayo en cama mi hija Camila y tuve que faltar al trabajo, pero esta vez sin goce de salario. Ese mes mi ingreso se vio drásticamente afectado”, agregó Matilde Huerta tras reconocer que aun hoy en día hace malabares para sacar 48 horas de 24.

Pese a todo, ambas madres coinciden que los desafíos las hacen fuertes porque su motivación es sacar adelante a sus hijos.

“Yo considero que las pruebas por las que pasamos nos hacen levantarnos y hacerlo mejor la siguiente vez”, concluyó Huerta.

Single Parents

aising children and guiding a family without the support of another adult can bring stressful challenges to both parents and children.

Single parents represent a sizeable demographic in the United States. In 2010, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development found single parents to be 28.3% of American families.

Over the past 20 years, single-parent families have become more common than the ¨traditional¨ family composed of a mother, a father, and children. What is being seen is a wide variety of family structures from families headed by the mother, the father or the grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Despite the increase in the number of single parents, the challenges that come with being one can be overwhelming for the

parent acting as both a father and a mother, as well as a judge, jury and teacher.

“First, you do not have a partner to whom to delegate or assign responsibilities,” says Martha Gonzalez, who has been a single mother of three girls for the past four years. For Martha, her role as a mother has not been easy, and many times she has been discouraged by the fact that she cannot count on the support of another adult in her home.

“Of course, we face more challenges by being single parents because there is greater pressure on us than when there is another person who supports us.

That is why I have had to adjust schedules and routines to achieve to the best of my ability the development, the education and the well-being of my daughters.” commented the Peruvian mother who has lived

in USA for the past 20 years.

Another great challenge to single parents is being the sole provider. As heads of families, they must provide food, clothes, a home, and timely bill payments.

“On one occasion my five-year-old son Gabriel got chickenpox, and I asked for vacation time to take care of him. When he recovered, my daughter Camila got sick, and I had to miss work and this time it was without pay. That month my income was drastically affected,” added Matilde Huerta, admitting that she still tries to make 48 hours out of 24 hours in a day.

Despite all, both mothers agree that the challenges make them stronger because their motivation is to ensure that their children succeed in life. “I believe that the trials we go through help us to be better parents every day,” said Huerta.

U-M unveils tuition guarantee

for Michigan students with need

he University of Michigan will launch a new financial aid program for in-state students that offers a "Go Blue Guarantee" of free tuition for up to four years for students with family income of up to $65,000.

The new program—which includes families earning up to what is roughly the state's median income—will launch Jan. 1, 2018. It was approved by the university's Board of Regents as part of the fiscal year 2018 general fund budget for the Ann Arbor campus.

"Today, our long-standing commitment to ensuring that qualified students from Michigan can afford a U-M education becomes a guarantee," said U-M President Mark Schlissel.

"The 'Go Blue Guarantee' cuts through the complexities of financial aid to help us reach talented students from all communities in our state. I have always believed that talent is ubiquitous in our society, but

opportunity most certainly is not. The 'Go Blue Guarantee' helps us ensure wider opportunity."

To qualify, in-state students seeking their first undergraduate degree must have been accepted at the university and have filled financial aid forms such as FAFSA and CSS. The guarantee amplifies the university's long-standing commitment to meet financial need for all in-state students and it does not reduce any need-based aid for students from families earning more than $65,000. In fact, many in-state students from families earning up to $125,000 a year are awarded scholarships and grants that pay half their tuition.

The "Go Blue Guarantee" provides four years of free tuition to students with a family income of up to $65,000, within certain asset limits. The $65,000 benchmark is roughly equal to the state's median family income of $63,893 (2015). These

students also may be eligible for additional aid to cover non-tuition costs.

The university's generous need-based financial aid program includes all in-state students with financial need and typically includes Michigan families earning up to about $125,000 a year or more, depending on specific circumstances.

Comparable "tuition guarantee" programs—like those in California and New York—are statewide programs that leverage substantial state grants made directly to students. The average state grant received by students at UCLA, for example, exceeds $10,000 a year, compared to the average state grant for Michigan students of $715.

e azul, blanco y rojo se viste el mes de julio porque se celebra la más importante fiesta para los estadounidenses, la independencia. Hace 241 años, el 4 de julio de 1776, desde que las 13 colonias formaron la Declaración de Independencia del Imperio Británico.

Y será durante este mes donde más banderas usted podrá ver adornando las fachadas de las casas, a lo largo del territorio nacional, y el patriotismo se sentirá con mayor intensidad.

La manera de festejar este día ha variado muy poco desde finales del siglo XVIII: barbacoas, desfiles, “picnic” y fuegos artificiales. Hoy en día grandes y chicos no solo disfrutan lo tradicional sino sus adhesiones como las playas, las ferias o los patios de sus casas.

Pero la celebración más vistosa y entusiasta se vive en la capital del país, Washington, donde se congregan cada año miles de personas para ondear la bandera frente al templo de su democracia: el Capitolio. lue, white and red color the month of July because the United States of America celebrates the most important holiday for Americans, Independence Day. It has been 241 years since July 4, 1776, when the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence and separated from the British Empire.

And it will be during this month when you can see more flags decorating the front of houses all around the country and when patriotism is more intense.

The way to celebrate this day has varied very little since the end of the 18th century: barbecues, parades, picnics and fireworks. Nowadays, adults and children not only enjoy the traditional but also enjoy going to the beaches, the fairs or the patios of their houses.

But the most colorful and enthusiastic celebration is found in the capital of the country, Washington D.C., where thousands get together every year to wave the United States’ flag in front of the temple of their democracy: The Capitol. Families from all the states and tourists extend their picnic blankets along the three miles of the esplanade that is the National Mall to pay tribute to the homeland with the official U.S. menu: barbequed meat, potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelons, cookies and cupcakes.

For over a century, New York has hosted the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest on July 4, the world’s largest hotdog-eating contest, televised and watched by nearly two million people.

THE PARADES, another classic activity of the Independence Day festivities.

In different cities across the country, colorful parades with participating bands are organized and are followed with enthusiasm by citizens.

THE FRAUNCES TAVERN, the story tells that George Washington bid farewell to his troops by inviting them to a banquet at the Fraunces Tavern, which had opened in 1762. It is now an important site to visit in New York because it is also a museum with a display of objects from the independence time and offers food and drinks from that period.

THE FIREWORKS, they are the culmination of the celebrations of the day.

In every city around the United States, there are firework displays for Independence Day. The options: to watch them from the New York Empire State Building, from the esplanade of the Capitol in Washington or from a New York cruise. Nearly 14,000 firework displays are held throughout the country.

l ritmo de vida que llevamos en ocasiones provoca que tengamos algunas que otras molestias o incluso dolores articulares y/o musculares.

Normalmente no le prestamos una especial atención a estas dolencias que, sin embargo, van reduciendo nuestra capacidad de movimiento y de calidad de vida, con la consiguiente pérdida de salud y bienestar.

Este tipo de lesiones que se extienden en el tiempo, son recurrentes y tienden a doler, incluso cuando se está en reposo, son lo que conocemos como lesiones crónicas, muy frecuentes en el mundo del deporte, pero no son exclusivas de los deportistas.

Estos tipos de lesiones recurrentes también suelen sobrevenir en los lugares de trabajo donde las personas llevan a cabo tareas repetitivas en la que actúan los mismos músculos una y otra vez.

Como explicábamos estas lesiones periódicas en ocasiones pasan por fases agudas.

Estas lesiones se pueden producir por una falta de tonicidad muscular, una alteración en el recorrido normal de la articulación, por un sobre uso principalmente, por los ligamentos sueltos, el tejido cicatricial inflexible de las lesiones anteriores y desequilibrio muscular.

Las opciones de tratamiento en lesiones crónicas pueden incluir: • Ejercicios de fisioterapia para promover la curación, la fuerza y la flexibilidad.

• Las técnicas manuales, como la movilización y el masaje.

• Electroterapia.

• Medicamentos para calmar el dolor.

• Poco a poco la introducción de actividades a los niveles normales.

Chronic Injuries

he rhythm of life sometimes causes us to have discomfort in our bodies or joints and/or muscles.

Normally, we do not pay special attention to those ailments, which eventually reduce our ability to move and diminish the quality of life, leading to a loss of good health and well-being.

Those types of lesions that extend over time, that reoccur and tend to be painful even when we are resting, are known as chronic injuries. They are frequent in the world of sports, but are not limited to athletes. The recurring injuries often occur in the workplace where people perform repetitive tasks using the same muscles repeatedly.

As we explained, those recurring lesions sometimes go through acute stages. The acute phase of this type of disease is one that occurs during exercise and is usually treated in the first 48 hours using ice or cold compresses. Chronic injuries are those that occur hours after having performed the activity, usually after 48 to 72 hours, and will be treated mainly by applying heat to the affected area.

Those injuries are caused by a lack of muscle tone, by an alteration in the joint movement, by an overuse mainly of loose ligaments, and areas where there is scar

Treatment options for chronic injuries may include: • Physiotherapy exercises to promote healing, strength and flexibility.

• Manual techniques, such as mobilization and massage.

• Electrotherapy.

• Medications to relieve pain.

• Slow introduction of activities to normal levels.

It is important to get the right treatment as soon as possible after the injury to help a speedy recovery. Consult your doctor or physiotherapist immediately if the body function affected deteriorates or if the pain and swelling do not go away after a couple of days.

Avoid Chronic Injuries 1. A sprain is a type of joint injury that usually involves tearing of the capsule ligaments. Poorly healed sprains are the most common cause of a chronic injury.

2. A strain is an injury to the muscles or tendons. Keep the muscles at rest so that there are no recurring lesions in the area.

3. Immediate treatment includes rest, applying ice packs, compression (bandaging) and elevating the affected area. A poor recovery can lead to chronic injury.

4. Ongoing treatment and returning to work or doing sports again must be authorized by the physiotherapist in increasing levels of intensity and length.
