n niño que se deja dentro de un vehículo caliente puede morir de insolación en muy corto tiempo. Esta tragedia se puede prevenir. Aquí le brindamos algunos datos sobre los vehículos calientes y cómo mantener seguros a los niños.

Información sobre la insolación en los niños que se dejan en vehículos calientes • El golpe de calor (insolación) es la causa principal de las muertes relacionadas con vehículos, excluyendo a choques, en niños menores de 15 años.

• El golpe de calor puede suceder cuando el cuerpo no puede enfriarse lo suficientemente rápido.

• El cuerpo de un niño se calienta de tres a cinco veces más rápidamente que el de los adultos.

• Cuando se deja a un niño en un automóvil caliente, los órganos principales del niño empiezan a colapsar cuando la temperatura llega a 104 grados Fahrenheit (40 grados Celsius) • Un niño puede morir cuando su temperatura llega a los 107 grados F (41,6 grados C).

child left in a hot car can die of heat stroke very quickly. But this tragedy can be prevented. Here are some facts about hot cars and keeping kids safe.

Facts about Child Heat Stroke in Cars • Heat stroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths in children under 15.

• Heat stroke can happen when the body is not able to cool itself quickly enough.

• A child's body heats up three to five times faster than an adult's does.

• When left in a hot car, a child's major organs begin to shut down when his temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit (F).

• A child can die when his temperature reaches 107 degrees F. • Cars heat up quickly! In just 10 minutes, a car can heat up 20 degrees F. • Cracking a window and/or air conditioning does little to keep it cool once the car is turned off.

• Heat stroke can happen when the outside temperature is as low as 57 degrees F. Set Reminders!

Any parent or caregiver, even a very loving and attentive one, can forget a child is in the back seat.

Being especially busy or distracted or having a change from the usual routine increases the risk. Here are some things you can do to prevent the unthinkable from happening to your child: • Always check the back seat and make sure all children are out of the car before locking it and walking away.

• Avoid distractions while driving,

especially cell phone use.

• Be extra alert when there is a change in your routine, like when someone else is driving your child or you take a different route to work or child care.

• Have your child care provider call if your child is more than 10 minutes late.

• Put your cell phone, bag, or purse in the back seat, so you check the back seat when you arrive at your destination.

• If someone else is driving your child, always check to make sure he has arrived safely.

Lock Your Car! Keep your car locked when it is parked to prevent a curious child from entering when no one is around. Many hot car deaths have occurred when a child mistakenly locks himself inside. Here are some reminders for parents and caregivers: • Make sure children do not have easy access to your car keys. Store them out of a child's reach.

• Teach children that cars are not safe places to play.

• Keep rear fold-down seats closed to prevent a child from crawling into the trunk from inside the car.

• Remind children that cars, especially car trunks, should not be used for games like hide-and-seek.

Important Tip: If a child is missing, always check the pool first, and then the car, including the trunk!

Take Action if You See a Child Alone in a Car! Protecting children is everyone's business! If you see an unattended child in a car and are concerned, you should immediately call 911.

ext to saving for retirement, buying a house is one of the most important financial decisions made by many people in the United States.

Soraima M. Alonso, real estate agent with Real Estate Sales Force, revealed some steps that potential buyers can follow to find helpful resources and to learn the correct process when buying a house.

1. Start an early search for a house you would like to buy within the price range you can afford and within your desired geographic area.

2. Demonstrate that you have the money for the down payment as well as to show that you have enough savings to cover non-budgeted expenses that may come with owning a house.

3. Work with a lender to determine how much money you can borrow. An important factor affecting that is the income-debt ratio. In general, a good rule is to keep your debt at a level 36%

of or below your monthly gross income. Lenders will also assess your income history, most recent W2s, having a steady job for a least two years and other documentation.

4. Obtain a prequalification for a line of credit for the loan. Remember you can get a free annual copy of your credit report by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.

5. Make sure you have a real estate agent.

6. Find a house and make an offer.

7. Get a house inspection done.

8. Get an appraisal of the house.

9. Coordinate all paperwork with your lender and real estate agent.

10. Close the deal.

Alonso also commented that now is a good time to buy a house because interest rates are low, ranging from 3.8% to 4%, considering that interest is affected by a person’s credit rating and spending.

uan!, Juan! Juan!”. Ese es el grito de una madre cuando no puede ver a su hijo. Sé que todos lo hemos imaginado y todos tenemos miedo y esperamos que nunca suceda.

Cada año, miles de niños son separados brevemente de sus padres durante visitas a eventos grandes. Y a pesar de que naturalmente queremos ser unos ermitaños para mantener seguros a nuestros hijos, la realidad es que debemos salir y disfrutar de viajes y eventos comunitarios en parques que pueden enriquecer a nuestra familia.

Le podemos garantizar que estos paseos serán seguros si le enseña a sus hijos unos simples consejos para cuando salgan a eventos comunitarios: 1.- Conversa con tus hijos sobre “personas extrañas o desconocidos”: Cuando estés yendo al evento, conversa de manera sencilla y divertida sobre quién es un extraño y qué hacer si un extraño se nos acerca. Conversa sobre los distintos escenarios. Enséñales a ser corteses, pero también estar al tanto de su entorno y ser consciente de cómo se sienten frente a los demás. “

2.- Enséñales el consejo “donde yo te puedo ver y escuchar”: Siempre ayuda decirle a los niños adónde están yendo y los planes que tienes cuando estés ahí. También me gusta describirles cómo es el lugar. ¿Es un parque? ¿Es un teatro? Cuando los niños tienen una imagen, saben lo que pueden esperar y pueden visualizarlo y entender cuáles son sus límites mientras estén allí. En cualquier caso, es importante que entiendan que deben estar en un lugar donde puedas verlos y oírlos. Ir a un evento familiar y estar seguros significa que es la responsabilidad de todos estar alerta y mantenerse cercanos.

3.- Infórmales si vas a encontrarte con alguien una vez que llegues: Dile a los niños si vas a encontrarte con amigos o familia.

Cuando ellos saben, sabrán como reaccionar si alguien les miente y les dice “soy amigo de tu mamá y me dijo que venga a buscarte”. Sé claro en lo que tienen que hacer los niños si se encuentran en esta circunstancia. Diles que deben ser atrevidos y

no deben tener miedo de decir no.

4.- Asegúrate de que saben de memoria tu nombre y número de celular: Con el marcado rápido, muchos niños no saben el número de móvil y cuando son niños no saben nuestro nombre completo porque nos dicen “mamá” o “papá”. A medida que se acerca el evento, empieza a practicar con ellos tu nombre y número de teléfono. También puedes ponerlo en un papel en sus bolsillos si son muy pequeños. De cualquier manera, asegúrate de que tengan acceso a esa información.

5.- Una vez en el evento, ayúdalos a identificar a los policías y voluntarios: Inmediatamente llegues al evento, detente y ayuda a que tus niños identifiquen a un policía y a un voluntario. Puedes acercarte al oficial como familia para que tus niños se sientan seguros.

Irónicamente, cuando nos preparamos hay menos oportunidades de que necesitemos estas precauciones de seguridad.

Tomar el tiempo para enseñar a tus hijos estos consejos te asegurará que tu niño esté listo para disfrutar tiempo al aire libre y los eventos en la comunidad.

Five Safety Tips You Can Teach Your Children

Talk to your children about “stranger danger”...

OHN!! JOHN!!! JOHN!!!!” That is the cry of a mom, whose child is not within sight. I know we’ve all imagined it, yet all of us fear it in our gut and hope it will NEVER happen!

Every year, thousands of children are shortly separated from their parents during visits to large events. And although we would naturally want to be hermits for the sake of keeping our children safe, the reality is we must and SHOULD go out and enjoy the fascinating field trips, parks and community events that will enrich our entire family.

We CAN guarantee that these outings will be safe if you teach your children a few simple tips when going out to community events: 1- Talk to your children about “stranger danger.”

On your way to the event, engage in a simple and fun conversation about who is a stranger and what to do if a stranger approaches them. Talk about different scenarios. Teach them to be polite, but to also be aware of their surroundings and to be aware of how they feel around others. Let them know it’s only okay to share their name when they are with you.

2- Teach them the tip “where I can see you and hear you.” It is always helpful to tell the children where you are going and your plans while there. I also like to describe what the place looks like, i.e.

Is it a park [open and airy]? Is it a theatre [dark and tight]? When children are given an image of what they can expect, they can easily visualize themselves in that location and can understand their boundaries while there. In either case, it’s important they understand they must stay where you can SEE “

THEM AND HEAR THEM. Going out to a family event and keeping it safe means it is everyone’s responsibility to be alert and to stay close.

3- Inform them if you are meeting anyone else there. Let the children know if you are meeting with friends or family. When they know, they will know how to react if someone lies and says to them, “I’m a friend of your mom and she said to come get you.” Be clear on what the children should do if they are in that circumstance. Tell them to be BOLD and not be afraid to say “NO!” 4- Make sure they have memorized your name and cell phone number. With memory dial, many children don’t know our cell phone numbers and when they are young, they may not know your full name, because they always call you “mommy” or “daddy.” With the date of the event getting closer, start practicing your name and phone number. You can also put it in a paper in their pockets if they are very young. Either way, make sure they refer to it if they need it.

5- Once at the event, help them identify police officers and volunteer booths. As soon as you arrive at the event, stop and help your children spot a police officer and identify a volunteer booth. You can even approach the officer as a family, so your child can feel safe around him or her.

Ironically, when we prepare, there are less chances of us needing to use these safety precautions.

Taking the time to teach your children these basic safety tips, will ensure you and your children are ready to enjoy the great outdoors and events in your community!!

ue tienen en común un perro y un gato? Bueno hay quien diría que nada porque sus personalidades son muy diferentes, sin embargo, durante décadas, estos animales se vienen utilizando por los efectos positivos que producen en las personas, principalmente aquellas por las que están atravesado una circunstancia de dolor o estrés.

Esto es lo que hoy en día se conoce como terapia de mascotas, la cual está siendo implementada en hospitales, asilos para ancianos, centros comunitarios, de rehabilitación y hasta las mismas universidades ofrecen este servicio a sus estudiantes. Por ejemplo, hay universidades que cuentan con esta terapia para ayudar a sus alumnos a enfrentar la ansiedad, depresión, soledad, el estrés o nostalgia muchas veces efecto del cargado horario académico, la distancia de quienes aman o simplemente porque extrañan la compañía de su mascota.

Según el veterinario José Francisco Toledo Cornejo, la terapia de mascotas consiste en seleccionar, entrenar y certificar animales que sean de apoyo en tratamientos y terapias para pacientes de todas las edades, con enfermedades que los debilitan y los afectan en el plano físico, social, emocional y cognitivo.

Toledo comenta que las especies empleadas son los perros, gatos, caballos y delfines, estos últimos son más utilizados para personas con Síndrome de Down, parálisis cerebral, autismo, entre otros padecimientos.

En el caso de los perros o gatos, el experto reconoce que no todas las varieda-

des pueden tomarse en cuenta para este proyecto, deberán ser animales sociables con las personas inclusive con las que no conocen, que se dejen tocar fácilmente, que se sientan cómodos en situaciones incómodas, sepan manejarse con gentileza en escenarios estresantes y no sean agresivos.

El objetivo de la terapia de mascotas es proporcionar comodidad y acompañamiento, aumentar el bienestar emocional, promover la sanidad y mejorar la calidad de vida de quienes interactúan con estos animales a través de caricias, compañía y el hablar con ellos.

De esta manera, las personas idóneas para recibir esta terapia son aquellas que han perdido la motivación ante las situaciones de la vida, debido a la depresión o a la falta de interacción con la sociedad por estar dentro de hospitales o clínicas, y para quienes padecen problemas de déficit de atención y aprendizaje. Como por ejemplo, quienes reciben tratamiento para el cáncer a largo plazo, los individuos hospitalizados con insuficiencia cardíaca crónica o los veteranos con trastorno de estrés postraumático. También es importante comentar que no es sólo la persona enferma quien recibe los beneficios de la terapia de mascotas, sus familiares y amigos que están presentes cuando la terapia ocurre declaran también sentirse mejor.

Recuerde si tiene un familiar que usted considere que necesita la compañía de una mascota de este tipo podría hablar con su doctor o simplemente consulte con la Sociedad Humana, quienes le podrán orientar y aliviar el alma de quienes más lo necesitan.

hat do a dog and a cat have in common? Many might say they have nothing in common because of their contrasting personalities, but for many decades these animals have been used for therapy for the positive effects they have on people, especially those afflicted with pain or stress.

Today this is called pet therapy, and is being implemented in hospitals, nursing homes, community and rehabilitation centers, and even in universities. For example, pet therapy is being used at the university to help students cope with anxiety, depression, loneliness, homesickness, stress due to a busy schedule, or simply because the students miss their own pets.

According to veterinarian Jose Francisco Toledo, pet therapy consists of selecting, training, and certifying animals to provide support for treatment and therapy provided to patients of all ages with diseases that affect their physical, cognitive, or emotional state.

The objective of pet therapy is to give comfort and company while boosting mental wellness and increasing the quality of life of those who come in contact with those animals.

The ideal people to receive pet therapy are those who have lost motiva-

tion due to difficult life situations such depression, lack of human contact from being confined in a hospital or clinic, and to those who suffer from learning and attention deficit disorders. For example, those who suffer from cancer, people with chronic heart conditions, and veterans suffering from stress are common patients.

Toledo commented that the kinds of animals used for pet therapy are dogs, cats, horses, and dolphins.

These last ones are used to help people with Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism, among other conditions.

In the case of dogs or cats the expert recognizes that not all breeds are useful or suitable for pet therapy.

Furthermore, the individual animals must be sociable, not hostile to strangers, gentle, and not aggressive.

It is important to mention that the patient receiving the therapy is not the only one that benefits but also family members and friends have reported feeling better while being present during the therapy sessions.

Remember if you have a loved one that you may think could benefit from pet therapy, talk to your doctor or contact the Humane Society which could provide you with more information.

Educación en casa Una alternativa diferente para aprender

ómo sería si el aula de clase fuera el comedor o la sala de la casa donde vive el estudiante? ¿Si el área del recreo fuera el jardín de su residencia o el parque más cercano? ¿O si los compañeros de estudio fueran sus propios hermanos?

Esta es una realidad que viven muchos niños. Una opción muy beneficiosa para quienes no pueden asistir a la escuela por problemas de enfermedad, discapacidad o tener que viajar continuamente. Sin embargo, otros menores que no tienen ninguno de estos inconvenientes también están recibiendo clases en sus casas. ¿Pero por qué sus padres han decidido ser los profesores de sus hijos?. Muchos prefieren alejarlos del rigor académico, que aprendan a su ritmo y sin competitividad o que sacien su curiosidad leyendo, explorando un museo o empapándose de la naturaleza.

El Centro Nacional de Estadísticas de Educación de Estados Unidos (NCES por sus siglas en inglés), reveló que el 91% de los padres mostraban su preocupación por la convivencia dentro de la escuela pública, el 77% hablaban de la educación en valores y el 74% mostraban su deseo de ofrecer conocimientos académicos de calidad. Mientras que el 44% deseaban una pedagogía

“No entiendo como un niño pasa seis horas en un pupitre y se les bombardea con tareas para dejarlos estar otro tanto de horas sentados en la casa”, nos cuenta Susana Taylor , quien quiso probar durante un año, a ver como resultaba cuando Sara, su hija mayor tenía cinco años y Tomas, el segundo, tres años. Ocho años después, aquí seguimos”, explica orgullosa.

Este sistema educativo conocido como escuela en casa es actualmente muy común y legal en los 50 estados de Estados Unidos.

Según datos publicados por NCES entre 2003 y 2012 el número de niños estadounidenses entre los 5 y los 17 años que estudian en casa aumentó un 61,8 por ciento.

“Yo me levanto temprano y a las 9:00 am hacemos la rutina de desayuno, vestirnos, hacer camas, lavar dientes, etc. Y después en el jardín hacemos ejercicios de estiramiento para luego hacer cada uno lo que le corresponde en ese momento. Es decir, no tenemos clases por asignaturas, sino que cada niño sigue sus propios intereses y va avanzando según su ritmo", comenta Susana.

Por ejemplo, continua, Sara de 13 años, es una lectora consumada y devora novelas

desde hace muchos años, a través de los libros he logrado trabajar muchas asignaturas con ella, de manera que la literatura es la excusa para hablar de temas de historia, de filosofía, de lengua, hasta, incluso, de física. Entre tanto, Tomas de 11 años, es un apasionado por la construcción y dedica la mañana a sus proyectos, creando todo tipo de máquinas y artefactos a base de cartón y otros materiales reciclables, siempre con su pistola de silicona en mano. Tres tardes por semana tenemos actividades extraescolares, que consisten en diversos deportes y la pintura".

La legislación varía mucho según los estados: unos obligan a exámenes periódicos para comprobar si el niño está a su nivel; en otros basta con el informe de un tutor. En Washington y Iowa se han abierto los dos primeros centros de recursos para padres que enseñan en casa.

Estados Unidos, Canadá y Australia están a la vanguardia y Gran Bretaña lleva la voz cantante en Europa. Esto ha dejado ver que esta alternativa diferente de enseñar cada día gana terreno. Tanto así que Harvard ha sido la primera Universidad en abrir un departamento para acceso de los que estudian en la casa.

ow would you like it if the classroom were the dining room or the living room of the student's home? If the recreation area was the garden of a residence or the nearest park? Or if his study peers were his own siblings?

That is the reality that many children live: a beneficial option for those who cannot attend school due to illness, disability or continuous travel. However, other children who do not have any of those situations are also receiving classes in their homes.

Why have their parents decided to be the teachers of their own children? Many parents prefer to distance their children from the classroom academic rigor. For them to learn at their own pace without competitiveness or to satisfy their curiosity by reading, exploring a museum or mother nature.

The National Center for Education Statistics in the United States (NCES) found that 91% of parents who homeschooled their children expressed concern about the public schools’ environment, 77% talked about teaching values, 74% showed their desire to offer quality academic education, and 44% wanted an alternative way of learning for their children.

“I do not understand how a child spends six hours at a desk and then he is bombarded with homework and has to spend a few more hours sitting in the house," says Susana Taylor, who wanted to try home schooling for a year to see how it was. Her eldest daughter, Sara, was five-years old and her son Tomas was three-years old. Eight years later, we are still doing it,” she says proudly.

This way of educating children is known as home schooling. It is nowadays permitted and legal in all 50 states of the United States of America (U.S.A). Per data published

by NCES, between 2003 and 2012, the number of American children ages 5 to 17 who were being home schooled increased by 61.8%.

“I get up early and at 9 a.m. We have breakfast, get dressed, make the beds, and brush our teeth. We go to the garden to do stretching exercises and then each child starts working on whatever inspires him or her at that moment. In other words, we do not have classes by subjects. Instead, children follow their own interests and they progress at their own pace,” says Susana.

“For example, Sara, who is now 13 years old, is a consummate reader and has devou-

red novels for many years. It is through books that I have managed to work many subjects with her. Studying literature is an excuse to talk about history, philosophy, language, and even physics. In the meantime, 11-year-old Tomas is passionate about construction and dedicates the mornings to his projects, creating all kinds of machines and artifacts made of cardboard and other recyclable materials. He is always with his silicone gun at hand. Three afternoons a week, we have extracurricular activities, which consist of various sports and painting.”

Home schooling legislation varies by state: some require periodic examinations to check if the child is at his academic level; in others, a report from a tutor would be sufficient. In Washington State and Iowa, the first two resource centers have opened for parents who teach their children at home.

When it comes to home schooling, the U.S.A., Canada and Australia are at the forefront and Britain is the leading country in Europe. That shows that this learning alternative is gaining ground. So much that Harvard University has been the first to open a department to provide access to those who study at home.

Karate: más que un deporte, es una forma de vida

oy en día, la familia entera puede hallar en el karate, el equilibrio entre el bienestar físico y mental. Si bien es cierto, esta técnica ha sido promovida para defensa personal, hoy en día es adoptada como una filosofía de vida para controlar las emociones. Este es el caso de Alejandro Solórzano, padre de dos varones adolescentes, quienes practican como familia desde hace siete años el karate.

Solórzano reconoce que después de varios años se ha convertido en una prioridad y filosofía no solo en su vida sino en su familia.

“Cuando mis hijos empezaron con el karate, les enseñaron que el 98 por ciento de los problemas en la calle se pueden evitar. Usted aprende a ser diferente, a controlar sus emociones y a contar hasta diez porque uno no tiene nada que probar”, puntualizó.

El entrenador Livans de la escuela American JuJitsu Center (AJC), confirma que las personas que practican esta disciplina lo hacen como una manera de vivir su vida en términos de los logros y su dedicación. “Con mucho esfuerzo puedes tener éxito pero hay que trabajar para alcanzar eso y esto se logra no solo trabajando la parte física sino también la mental en la persona”.

Proveniente de Japón, el karate es una de las artes marciales más conocidas alrededor del mundo. Se usan en un 60% las manos y en un 40% las piernas para realizar los golpes durante el combate. Es un deporte en el que se utiliza mucho la observación, la re-

petición y el análisis del adversario.

owadays, families can find a balance between physical and mental well-being in karate. Even though the technique has been promoted for personal defense, it has now been adapted as a philosophy of life to control emotions.

That is the case of Alejandro Solórzano, the father of two teenage boys, who has practiced karate with his family for the past seven years. Solórzano acknowledges that after all those years, it has become a priority and a philosophy not only in his life but in his family’s too.

“When my kids started karate, they were taught that 98 percent of the problems in the street could be avoided. You learn to be different, to control your emotions and to count to ten because you have nothing to prove,” he said.

Mr. Livans, the trainer from American Ju-Jitsu Center (AJC), confirms that people who practice the discipline do it as a way to live their lives in terms of achievements and dedication. “With a lot of effort, you can be successful, but you have to work at it. All of that will be achieved not only by working the physical part but also the mental part of the person.”

Karate, originally from Japan, is one of the best-known martial arts around the world. The hands are used 60% and the legs 40% to perform the punches during combat. It is a sport in which observation, repetition and analysis of the adversary are used a lot.

This discipline will bring you a lot of advantages that you were probably not aware of. Here we present six of them: 1. Improves blood circulation.

The natural flexibility of blood vessels decreases with the passing of time. However, practicing karate will cause those symptoms to be delayed and the heart to be stronger by pumping large volumes of blood.

2. Strengthens your muscles.

The muscles of the back, arms and legs are constantly worked.

Therefore, muscle mass and tone are increased.

3. It is good to socialize.

It is a sport that is not practiced alone; therefore, you can make new friends.

4. Improves your concentration.

You must learn and practice different movements. When you have another person coming towards you, the concentration to know what maneuvers to perform is indispensable.

5. Increases coordination.

Coordination between legs, arms and the brain will be much greater. At first it may be difficult, but with practice, you will be able to harmonize all movements.

6. Increases flexibility.

Movements and stretching are performed; consequently, different joints of the body increase their flexibility. The muscles of the legs will be more elastic and the degree of movement of the joints will be higher.
