Summer Break: A Good Time To Check Your Credit Report You may have more fun on your next vacation if you check your credit first so you know what you can afford.

chool will be out soon and that means summer vacation planning for families. Before planning your vacation, financial experts recommend reviewing your finances by getting a FREE annual credit report from Equifax, Experian and/or TransUnion at www.annualcreditreport.com.

One credit reporting agency survey showed that 72 percent of consumers spent more on their vacation than planned. The majority of that expense was put on their credit cards. Checking your credit report periodically can help you understand your financial situation when budgeting for a vacation or other large expense.

While most consumers know they can get a free credit report every year, only three in five do so. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Eric J. Ellman, Interim President and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “Even so, many consumers, unfortunately, don’t exercise their right to review their free annual credit reports.”

The National Consumer Assistance Plan, an unprecedented program by the three nationwide credit reporting agencies in cooperation with the Attorney General, has been instrumental in educating consumers about how to get their free annual credit reports. Improving consumers’ understanding of their credit reports is a priority for the industry.

By reviewing your credit report every year, you can check up on your financial health as well as identify issues that might cause a credit denial later.

When reviewing your credit reports, if you see information you don’t recognize, notify the credit reporting agency right away. All three of the nationwide credit reporting agencies can be accessed online, by phone or by mail. Whichever method

you choose, the credit reporting agency will investigate disputed information and respond back to you with the results.

l Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS) exhorta a los contribuyentes que tienen múltiples trabajos o que pudieran tener un trabajo adicional en el verano, a realizar una revisión de su cheque de pago. Hacerlo, le ayudará a determinar si le retienen la cantidad correcta de sus cheques.

Revisar y ajustar la retención lo antes posible en 2019 es la mejor manera de evitar una sorpresa tributaria el año entrante.

La Ley de Empleos y Reducción de Impuestos (TCJA, por sus siglas en inglés) incluyó cambios en la leyes tributarias.

Entre otras cosas, la nueva ley aumentó la deducción estándar, eliminó las exenciones personales, aumentó el Crédito Tributario por Hijos, limitó o descontinuó ciertas deducciones, y modificó las tasas y categorías de impuestos. he Internal Revenue Service urges taxpayers who work multiple jobs or who may be adding summer employment to complete a Paycheck Checkup. Doing so will help them check if they are having the right amount of tax withheld from their paychecks.

Checking and adjusting tax withholding as early as possible in 2019 is the best way to head off a tax-time surprise next year.

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) made changes to the tax law. Among other things, the new law increased the standard deduction, eliminated personal exemptions, increased the child tax credit, limited or discontinued certain deductions and changed the tax rates and brackets. As a result, many taxpayers ended up receiving refunds that were larger or smaller than expected, while others unexpectedly owed additional

tax when they filed their 2018 tax returns.

Two-income families and people with multiple jobs may be more vulnerable to being under-withheld or over-withheld following these major law changes. For 2019, a Paycheck Checkup is especially important for taxpayers who adjusted their withholding in 2018, specifically in the middle or later parts of the year. Doing a Paycheck Checkup can help determine the correct amount of tax for each of their employers to withhold.

The IRS urges everyone to do a Paycheck Checkup as early in the year as possible so that if an adjustment is needed, there is more time for withholding to happen evenly during the rest of the year. Waiting means there are fewer pay periods to withhold the necessary federal tax.

The easiest way to do a Paycheck Chec-

kup is to use the Withholding Calculator on IRS.gov. The Withholding Calculator can help taxpayers estimate their income, credits, adjustments and deductions more accurately and check if they have the right amount of tax withheld for their financial situation. When using the calculator, it's helpful to have a completed 2018 tax return and a recent pay stub available.

Based on the Withholding Calculator's recommendations, the taxpayer can then fill out and submit a new Form W-4 to their employer. In many instances, this means claiming fewer withholding allowances or having an extra flat-dollar amount withheld from their pay.

Self-employment Some workers are considered self-employed and are responsible for paying taxes directly to the IRS. Often, this includes people involved in the sharing economy. One way to pay taxes directly to the IRS is by making estimated tax payments during the year.

TCJA changed the way tax is calculated for most taxpayers, including those with substantial income not subject to withholding. As a result, many taxpayers may need to raise or lower the amount of tax they pay each quarter through the estimated tax system.

The revised estimated tax package, Form 1040-ES, on IRS.gov is designed to help taxpayers figure these payments correctly. The package includes a quick rundown of key tax changes, income tax rate schedules for 2019 and a useful worksheet for figuring the right amount to pay.

Other situations Anyone who had a life change, such as getting married or divorced, buying a home or having a baby should also consider a Paycheck Checkup.

Six Steps Toward

Higher Education Students have a chance to earn a $40,000 college scholarship by completing six important steps.

chool vacations can be an excellent time for high school seniors and their parents to get a head start on the college application process—you can focus on finding the right college without balancing the responsibilities of schoolwork and extracurriculars. Fortunately, there is a new tool that serves as a free and simple college planning guide for all students, while giving them a chance to win scholarships for each step they take.

The College Board Opportunity Scholarships support students and families on the path to college by laying out six steps of what to do and when to do it. The program launched in December for the class of 2020. Completing each step will earn a chance for a scholarship; completing all six will earn students a chance to win $40,000 for their college education. Here’s what you can do now to save time later: 1. Build Your College List—Get started by exploring colleges you’re interested in and create a list of at least six schools.

2. Practice for the SAT—Use Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy to get ready for test day.

3. Improve Your Score—Show how practice pays off by improving your SAT score. You can sign up to take the SAT on August 24 before

school starts.

4. Strengthen Your College List—Add to your college list and make sure it’s a mix of academic safety, fit, and reach schools.

5. Complete the FAFSA—Fill out the free government form to apply for financial aid.

6. Apply to Colleges—Apply to the schools you want to attend.

To be eligible for the $40,000 scholarships, students in the class of 2020 must sign up for the program and complete the Build Your College List steps by June 30.

The College Board Opportunity Scholarships are about how much you grow, not how high you score. The program doesn’t require an essay, application, a minimum GPA or a minimum SAT score. Instead, the program rewards all students’ efforts and actions on their way to college. The more effort you put in and actions you complete, the more chances you have to earn a college scholarship.

The College Board is investing $25 million over five years. The class of 2020 will earn a total of 4,000 scholarships for $5 million by the time the program ends for them in March 2020. A total of 1,025 scholarships, amounting to $850,000, have been given to date. Winners have come from 42 states, D.C. and Puerto Rico.

Opioid Epidemic

The opioid epidemic in the U.S. is staggering, but health care professionals are learning to better manage patients with pain.

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), health care professionals could save more than 130 lives lost to the opioid epidemic each day.

How? With a deeper understanding of pain, pain medication and addiction, especially related to opioids.

Communities rural and urban are witnessing a growing and deadly phenomenon, while health care providers feel caught between prescribing guidelines and patients’ needs.

To address this issue, doctors, nurses, dentists, physician assistants, pharmacists and other clinicians can take courses from CME Outfitters and USF Health, supported by an educational grant from Johnson & Johnson, that provide strategies for how and

Summer Travel Travel Means Hitting The Open Highway h, the familiar chant of "Are we there yet?" echoing from the back seat of a car. It's a refrain that has stood the test of time and one that sends most parents cringing while taking a family road trip.

As the summer of 2018 kicks off, consider this: 68 percent of Americans are likely to go on vacation, and 85 percent of them will travel by car, based on data from a recent online survey of approximately 1,500 adults.

While aspects of a road trip may be daunting, a majority of these travelers acknowledge that getting there is half the fun: 24 percent strongly agree, and 45 percent somewhat agree that getting to a vacation spot is often as enjoyable as being there.

If you've ever wondered what goes on inside the car during a road trip, read on.

A survey conducted by NACS, a trade association representing the convenience-store industry, reveals that most passengers want to be social: just over 60 percent report that they enjoy talking with fellow passengers and almost 80 percent cite listening together to music, podcasts, or audio books as favorite activities.

However, when it's time to take a break, disagreements can arise, especially when it comes to meals and snacks. A convenience-store stop can be a simple solution.

Today's convenience stores offer more than just gas and restrooms.

Many serve a range of hot-meal options such as pizza and burgers, as well as customizable sandwiches, coffee, drinks, and smoothies, so passengers and drivers of every age and taste can find something to satisfy them.

The NACS survey results show that the top three reasons for breaks during summer road trips are to: * Use the bathroom (96 percent). * Get gas (95 percent). * Buy food or drinks (91 percent).

"There's only one place that can satisfy all three of the top reasons for stopping during a road trip: a convenience store," says Jeff Lenard, NACS vice president of strategic industry initiatives.

However, regular breaks are an important part of road trips for safety as well as for practical reasons.

Drivers need a quick and easy place to stand up and stretch, or to allow someone else to take the wheel. Kids get antsy and need to stretch, too - according to the NACS survey, approximately 45 percent of the in-car disagreements during road trips center on children fidgeting or arguing.
