The Postal Service™ looks forward to delivering a great deal of holiday cheer along with more than 15 billion mail pieces. The United States Postal Inspection Service®, the federal law enforcement arm of the Postal Service, is working around-the-clock to keep your important shipments safe and prevent mail and parcel theft. What can you do to ensure your gifts and cards are safe? Postal Inspectors are offering FIVE tips to help ensure your important packages reach their destination, and brighten the lives of friends and loved ones this holiday season.

1. Don't leave delivered mail and packages unattended. Just as you would not leave your wallets and purses on the front seat of an unlocked car overnight, mail and packages should not be left sitting in mailboxes

or on front porches for any length of time.

2. Going out of town? Hold Mail at the local Post Office®. If you plan on going out of town or know you won't be able to check your mail for a few days, 2 consider using the Request Hold Mail service on USPS.com®. Letters and packages will be held securely at the local Post Office until you pick them up or request delivery.

3. Plan ahead. Ship using Hold for Pickup.

When shipping packages, you can choose the Hold for Pickup option and the recipients can collect the packages at their local Post Office. If you are expecting a package, you can redirect it 3 to your local Post Office by selecting Hold for Pickup using USPS Package Intercept®.

uando Julián Morales tenía 3 años, se le diagnosticó un raro trastorno genético llamado Disqueratosis Congénita, una forma de insuficiencia de la médula ósea en la que la médula no produce suficientes células sanguíneas. Esta afección generalmente se diagnostica por el bajo número de células sanguíneas circulantes en el paciente, incluidos los glóbulos rojos, los glóbulos blancos y las plaquetas.

Becoming a Bone-Marrow Donor

Seven-year-old Julian Morales has a rare genetic disease and is in need of a bone-marrow transplant. Finding a Hispanic matching donor has been a challenge.

hen Julian Morales was three years old, he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called dyskeratosis congenita, a form of bone-marrow failure in which the marrow does not produce enough blood cells. This condition is usually diagnosed by the low number of circulating blood cells in the patient, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

“Although he is taking medication that keeps him stable, doctors say it will work for only around five years,” said Mayra Garcia, Julian’s mother. The truth is that his only hope for a cure is a bone-marrow transplant, which replaces the damaged cells with healthy blood stem cells from a donor.

However, Julian’s search for his perfect donor has been challenging because of his Hispanic ethnicity. Julian’s donor needs to match his DNA profile, which in this case is complicated firstly because there are fewer Hispanic donors and secondly because his mother is from México and father from Nicaragua, making it harder to get an exact match.

Throughout this difficult journey, Mayra Garcia has had the support of Be The Match, a nonprofit organization that manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world and that for the last 30 years has been finding donors for thousands of people diagnosed with blood disorders like leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma, among others.

According to Be The Match, only 7 percent of the more than 19 million registry members are Hispanic. As a result, Hispanic patients fighting blood cancer or blood disorders have only a 46 percent chance of finding a fully matched blood stem-cell donor compared to a 77 percent chance for those who are of purely European descent.

The organization has been educating people through donor campaigns. In fact, Mrs. Garcia has been campaigning with them, informing people about how they can save a life

by joining the registry, while at the same time looking for a donor for her son.

She and her husband have already helped add 1,100 potential donors to the registry and even saved lives along the way—but Julian still hasn’t found his perfect match, not even his parents or little sister are a match.

The reality is that 70 percent of people who need a bone-marrow transplant do not have a match within their family.

The family also launched a social media campaign to raise awareness of the importance of becoming a potential donor. “We started Swab to Save (instagram.com/swabtosave/) to help more families like ours. We do not want others to go through what we have gone through to save our son. The campaign has worked perfectly, and people have started to register faster and more easily,” Garcia said.

For those who want to focus back on the spiritual side of this special time of year, the following suggestions can help in those efforts.

Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God's son. At the time of Christ's birth, all Je-

traditions to embrace wish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth.

The Health of Your Heart Depends on the Care of Your Mouth

t is no secret that having a healthy diet and doing exercise help us maintain our heart in perfect condition. But do you know that keeping a clean mouth also helps to have a healthy heart?

Maybe it does not sound logical, but there is a relationship between the two. According to studies, there is a link between poor dental health and cardiovascular disease.

"The lack of hygiene stimulates an accumulation of bacteria in the mouth, which produces bacterial plaque that if not removed on time runs the risk of red and swollen gums that can bleed easily. This is what we call gingivitis," explained dentist Rafael Balboa, who acknowledged that when gingivitis is left untreated or the treatment is delayed, the result is periodontal disease, which causes damage to tissues and bones around the teeth.

The findings indicate that the chronic presence of inflammation and infection are correlated with the presence of heart disease and atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries).

Because of the close relationship between both condi-

tions, one wonders that if oral health is improved, can cardiovascular heath be improved too?

The answer is yes according to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

In a group of patients, researchers at Columbia University in New York discovered that as the dental hygiene improved and the presence of bacteria in the mouth decreased, the narrowing of the arteries decreased too.

On the other hand, for those whose oral health worsened, there was an increase in the narrowing of their arteries.

There is no clear understanding of how the bacteria living in our mouths contributes to the narrowing of the arteries; however, it is clear that by avoiding problems with our gums and the proliferation of infections, we will be taking care of our hearts.

Dr. Balboa emphasized the importance of prevention by developing good hygiene habits such as brushing your teeth after every meal, flossing, using mouthwash, and a visit to your dentist at least every six months. Doing so guarantees not only healthy teeth but also a healthy heart.

Study Shows School Vouchers

Actually Save Money

here could be good news for taxpayers—especially those who are also parents of school-age kids. Since the creation of the first school voucher program in 1990, 42 analyses have examined the fiscal affect of school choice on taxpayers.

While public officials often fear the fiscal effects of these programs on district schools, concerned that because of high fixed costs, school choice programs cause harm, the researchers found school choice programs actually save money or are at least revenue neutral. None have had a negative fiscal impact.

How It Works In all the programs studied, voucher students leave the federal and local education dollars allocated for them behind in their public schools. For example, if a school district spends $10,000 per student and the student leaves with a $4,050 voucher, the district keeps the remaining $5,500. Any leftover state funds go back to the state, rather than the district, and can be reinvested in public schools.

The district gets to keep the portion of the federal funds it gets that are not based on enrollment. As a result, the public schools are left with fewer students to teach and more money per pupil to do it.

Communities can also use the money saved to invest in other priorities, such as law enforcement or healthcare or lower taxes.

Therefore, by taking their educational needs to private schools, voucher students removed an estimated cost burden of $8.5 billion from public schools.

A Primer On The Programs Voucher systems vary from place to place.

Here’s a look at some of the more common ones.

1. Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) let parents withdraw their children from public district or charter schools and get public funds in government-authorized savings accounts.

These funds can cover private school, online learning programs, private tutoring, community college costs, higher education expenses, and other approved services and materials.

2. School vouchers let parents choose a private school for their children, using all or part of the public funding set aside for their children’s education. Funds typically expended by a school district are allocated to the family.

3. Tax Credit Scholarships allow students to receive private school scholarships through nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations, whose donors receive tax credits for their charitable contributions.

4. Individual tax credits and deductions let parents get state income tax relief for approved educational expenses.

Leticia Moreinos Schwartz is a chef, teacher, food stylist, and cookbook author, specializing in Hispanic cuisine. She’s also a diabetes advocate who has been able to use her passion for healthy cooking to help people with type 2 diabetes and their families better manage the disease.

Type 2 diabetes is a very personal topic for Leticia because her grandfather died from complications, and the Hispanic community is at a greater risk of developing the disease. In fact, nearly 13% of U.S. Hispanic adults are already diagnosed, which is why Leticia has teamed up with Merck and the American Diabetes Association on a campaign called “America’s Diabetes Challenge” to urge people with type 2 diabetes to work with their doctor to set and reach their A1C goal (average blood glucose over the past 2-3 months). The program also encourages people to learn if they are at risk of low blood glucose, known as hypoglycemia, and how to help reduce that risk. With her personal story and recipes, Leticia hopes to motivate the type 2 diabetes community to reach their blood sugar goals.

Healthy eating is an important part of managing type 2 diabetes, so this holiday season, Chef Leticia has shared some of her favorite Latin recipes, but with a nutritious twist! Brazilian Guacamole

Ingredients 1 garlic clove, finely minced (about 1 teaspoon) 2 scallions, white and green parts, chopped (about 3 tablespoons) ½ red onion, finely chopped (about ½ cup) ½ red bell pepper, finely diced (about ½ cup) ½ yellow bell pepper, finely diced (about ½ cup) ½ english cucumber, peeled, seeded and finely diced 1 plum tomato, peeled, seeded and finely diced (about cup) 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon soy sauce ¼ cup choped fresh parsley ¼ cup fresh cilantro 2 ripe Hass avocados (about 220g) ¼ cup olive oil

Directions • Combine the garlic, scallions, red onion, bell peppers, cucumber and tomato. Toss well.

• Season with salt, pepper, soy sauce, parsley and clinatro. Fold well.

• Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits and scoop the flesh out of their shells. Dice to about the same size as the other ingredients.

• Slowly pour the olive oil over the mixture, and fold together carfefully. Taste to check seasoning.

• Refrigerate for at least 3 hours so that flavors can develop. Remove from the fridge at least 20 minutes before serving.
