Save Money when Decorating and Giving

this Holiday Season

utting up strings of holiday lights and giving special gifts to family and friends are holiday traditions for many Floridians. Before you deck the halls this year, consider how your decorations may impact your energy use and your bill.

“Depending on what type of holiday lights you use, those beautiful glowing strands can use a lot more energy than you’d think, which can drive up your energy bill,” said Florida Power & Light Company Energy Expert Monica Landrini. “Purchasing LED lights may be more costly upfront, but will save you money throughout the season.

LED lights use 80 to 90 percent less energy and can last 10 times as long as standard incandescent bulbs which saves you more over time.”

Here are more tips from FPL’s energy expert on ways you can decorate smarter and safer, as well as how you can give the gift of savings this holiday season.

Decorate smarter Set it and forget it: Use automatic timers to control how long you are running your lights or holiday inflatables each day. The

fewer the hours, the less energy you’ll use.

Use extension cords: Need to add length to your holiday lighting display? Consider using extension cords in less visible areas, so that you’re using your holiday lights where they’ll make the most visual impact.

Include energy-free décor: You can supplement your holiday displays with wreaths, ribbons and other decorations that don’t consume energy.

Use inflatables carefully: Although large inflatable decorations are fun and more popular than ever, they can be some of the most expensive holiday decorations. For example, if you run a large, animated snow globe around the clock throughout December, it can add nearly $15 to your energy bill.

Keep safety top of mind Inspect lights each year: Whether you’re using old or new holiday lights, inspect them for damage. Return or discard any with cracked or broken sockets, frayed or bare wires or loose connections.

Check the rating: Ensure that outdoor lighting and extension cords are UL-rated for exterior use. Never use indoor lights outside – although using outdoor lights inside the

home is fine.

Keep them grounded: All outdoor electrical decorations should be plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). You can buy portable units for outdoor use or have them permanently installed.

A survey by Think Finance revealed that 45 percent of 1,000 respondents would prefer to skip Christmas altogether.

Why has the national mood swung from Santa Claus is Coming to Town to The Grinch Who Stole Christmas? A lack of time, shortage of money, an excessive amount of expectations and a burdensome commitment to gift-buying are some of the top reasons people list for their stress levels reaching higher than the top of the Christmas tree.

To make the season more enjoyable, and to reduce stress, Dr. Raj Gupta says people should make their overall wellness a higher priority on their long holiday to-do list.

“Physical exercise makes the mental strain of the season much more manageable and can substantially decrease the stress one feels from all the demands,” says Gupta (www.drrajgupta.com), author of Wellness Center Solution: How Physicians Can Transform Their Practices, Their Income and Their

Lives, and founder of Soul Focus Wellness Center. “Exercise and some refreshing thinking and relaxing techniques help if done on a consistent basis.”

Doctor Gupta lists 4 ways to beat holiday stress: • Walk somewhere besides the mall. A brisk half-hour walk a day relaxes the brain and improves sleep. A study by California State University found a 10-minute walk increases energy, alters mood and can bring a positive outlook for up to two hours. “There’s a rhythm to it that relaxes the brain,” Gupta says. “It’s a proven stress-reducer. Movement makes the worries keep their distance.”

• Be a “chairman” if you’re bored. Most of working America is sedentary, and now much of shopping America is as well given the growth of online purchasing. A chair dip exercise is a handy way to tone and energize between your computer screen times. You use two chairs facing each other, about three feet apart. Sit on the edge of one chair and grip the edge with your hands. Place your heels on the edge of the other chair. Slide forward so your rear end clears the edge, then lower yourself until your elbows are

between 45-90 degrees. Slowly push yourself back up. “It works your triceps, shoulders and your core,” Gupta says.

• Drink heavily … water, that is! Many people over-imbibe during the holidays and it has a detrimental affect on their wellness.

Water brings weight loss and keeps your body in balance for all kinds of stressors. “A whopping 75 percent of all Americans are dehydrated,” Gupta says. “Staying properly hydrated is a panacea for what ails you— from daytime fatigue to headaches to back and joint pain to losing weight. Why wait ’til after the holidays to lose weight?”

• Give gratitude. In the rush to get everything done, we forget to appreciate what we have. Gupta says pausing to reflect brings a perspective that calms you down. “Take a few moments to really relish your health and all your blessings,” Gupta says. “The holidays are a perfect time to remember all that.” “People who are over-burdened often make time for everybody and everything but themselves, and that takes a toll,” Gupta says. “People troubled every holiday season by all the pressures must ask themselves, ‘Do I want to enjoy this?’ If so, they need to step away for a few minutes each day, get in a sweat, and get in tune with themselves.”

Avoiding heart disease may be a nutty idea...

hat's the conclusion of a new study of more than 210,000 U.S. adults tracked for 32 years. Researchers found that those who regularly ate peanuts, walnuts, cashews and other nuts had a lower risk of heart disease.

The findings "support recommendations of increasing the intake of a variety of nuts, as part of healthy dietary patterns, to reduce the risk of chronic disease," said study author Marta Guasch-Ferre. She is a research fellow in the department of nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The research was funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health. It found that -compared to people who never ate nuts -people who ate walnuts one or more times a week had about a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease. Those who ate peanuts two or more times per week had about 14 percent lower risk, and those who ate tree

nuts -- such as almonds, cashews, pistachios or macadamia nuts -- had a 15 to 23 percent lower risk.

The investigators found no link between total nut consumption and stroke risk, but they did find that people who ate peanuts and walnuts, in particular, had a lower risk of stroke.

One expert who reviewed the findings stressed, however, that the study could only point to an association, not a causeand-effect relationship.

"It should be recognized that persons who incorporate more nuts into their diet may reflect those who make better lifestyle choices overall, including healthy nutrition choices and regular exercise," said Dr. Benjamin Hirsch. He directs cardiology at Northwell Health's Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. Dr. Rachel Bond helps direct women's heart health at Lenox Hill Hospital in New

York City. She said that the study did have some "shortcomings" -- only white health professionals were included, and there wasn't much detail on how the nuts were prepared before eating.

But she said the findings "attest to the increasing evidence on the heart benefit and safety of nuts, which has prompted the inclusion of this food group in the American Heart Association guidelines."

And how might nuts work their hearthealthy magic? According to Bond, "it may be through their abundance of fiber, nutrients and antioxidants. While they are high in calories and fat, they contain mostly healthier fats, which can lower risk of heart disease."

But she believes people can still go nuts on too many nuts. "In a nutshell, pun intended, nut consumption seems to be beneficial for heart healthy lifestyle, when done in moderation," Bond said.

Jamón al Horno con Azúcar Morena Mango / Naranja

abiendo crecido en un hogar cubano, la Pascua siempre ha sido un momento especial para mi familia. Es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre nuestras bendiciones y disfrutar del calor que solo una comida compartida con las personas que amas puede proporcionar. Y como la Cuaresma ha terminado, ¡también es el día perfecto para deleitarte con deliciosos platos! Cuando era más joven, inmediatamente después del servicio de Pascua, volvíamos a casa donde mi mamá había preparado amorosamente todas nuestras recetas favoritas. Después, nos entretuvimos con su pastel de guayaba y queso crema mientras los adultos bebían espumosos "cortaditos".

Ahora, como madre, recreé estas tradiciones y recetas de Pascua para mi propia familia. La estrella de nuestra mesa era (y sigue siendo) un delicioso jamón cocido con chutney de mango y jugo de naranja para un sabroso sabor, un giro latino a un elemento tradicional de Pascua.

Nuestro jamón se acompaña con un delicioso macarrón y plato de queso manchego tachonado con chorizo español y terminado con un crujiente relleno de pan panko. Servimos zanahorias recién salteadas con almendras fileteadas y eneldo a un costado, y lo completamos con la receta de mi madre para un pastel de libra rociado con un glaseado de ron. ¡Solo escribir sobre eso me hace agua la boca!

No importa dónde se encuentre ni con quién comparta este día especial, adéntrese en su cocina y prepare algo delicioso este domingo de Pascua y saboree la abundancia de comida, familia y amigos.

Preparación 1. Precaliente el horno a 350 ° F. 2. Marca la piel del jamón con un cuchillo en un patrón de diamante (opcional). Coloque el jamón en una fuente para asar grande rociada con un atomizador antiadherente.

Mango/Orange Brown Sugar Baked Ham

Serves: 6 to 8 rowing up in a Cuban household, Easter has always been a special time for my family. It’s a chance to reflect on our blessings and bask in the warmth that only a meal shared with the people you love can provide. And because Lent is over, it is also the perfect day to feast on delicious dishes! When I was younger, immediately after Easter service, we would return home where my mom had lovingly prepared all our favorite recipes. Afterwards, we’d linger over her guava and cream cheese pound cake while the adults sipped on frothy “cortaditos” (Cuban espressos).

Now, as a mom myself, I recreate these Easter traditions and recipes for my own family. The star of our table was (and still is) a delectable baked ham with mango chutney and orange juice for a tasty tang — a Latin twist to a traditional Easter staple.

Our ham is accompanied with a mouthwatering macaroni and Manchego cheese dish studded with Spanish chorizo and finished with a crunchy panko bread topping. We serve fresh sautéed baby carrots with slivered almonds and dill along side it, and top it all off with my mother’s recipe for pound cake drizzled with a rum glaze. Just writing about it makes my mouth water!

No matter where you are or who you share this special day with, venture into your kitchen and whip up something scrumptious this Easter Sunday and relish in the abundance of food, family and friends.

Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. Score the skin of the ham with a knife in a diamond pattern (optional).

Arrange the ham in a large roasting pan that has been sprayed with non-stick spray.

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the chutney, mustard, brown sugar, cloves, garlic, shallots and orange juice until smooth. Pour the glaze over the ham.

4. Bake for 1 hour, until the ham is fully cooked through and the glaze is golden browned and caramelized. Ham may be served hot or at room temperature.

The schooling options many military parents are able to access now don’t match what they want for their children— and that can affect America’s preparedness.

merica’s military service members make great sacrifices for our country—and for their own families—but are their kids getting what they need from our K 12 education system?

A new national survey of service members, spouses and veterans looks at educational options for military families, their satisfaction and how their choices can play a role in whether a family accepts an assignment or even factor into decisions to leave military service altogether. There are roughly 750,000 school-aged children in active-duty-member households today.

Data show military families are very interested in alternatives to district schools.

According to a new EdChoice and Braun Research survey, we know 80 percent of them attend public schools today, despite the fact that more than 60 percent would

prefer different schooling environments for their children, such as private school, charter school, virtual school or home school. In fact, once military and veteran families are informed of how school choice options work, their support for those programs increases dramatically.

Types of School Choice Education savings accounts (ESAs).

Education savings accounts allow families to receive a deposit of public funds into government-authorized savings accounts—often distributed to families via a restricted-use debit card. Families can purchase any combination of private school tuition and fees, online learning programs, private tutoring, community college costs, higher education expenses and/or other approved customized learning services and materials.

Military respondents were almost five

times more likely to support ESAs than they were to oppose them.

Tax-credit scholarships allow families to choose private schools that best fit their needs. Nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations provide those scholarships and are funded by private charitable donations, for which donors are reimbursed through tax credits.

Sixty-three percent of military respondents support the concept of a tax-credit scholarship program.

School vouchers. School vouchers give parents the freedom to choose a private school for their children, using all or part of the public funding set aside for their children’s education.
