From September 19 to October 7, ArtPrize takes over Downtown Grand Rapids. The art competition will award more than $500,000 in prizes, and the public can cast their votes to choose the top awards.

rtPrize is a free and open art competition available to artists working in any medium and from anywhere in the world. For 19 days, from September 19 to October 7, three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids becomes an open playing field where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Any artist working from anywhere in the world can participate. Art is exhibited throughout downtown Grand Rapids— museums, bars, public parks, restaurants, theaters, hotels, bridges, laundromats, auto body shops, vacant storefronts and office spaces, among others. ArtPrize is free and open to the public and now attracts over 500,000 visitors. This year, more than 1,260 works created by more than 1,400 artists from 41 states and 40 countries will be exhibited at more than 165 venues. All artists and venues registered for the competition and then found each other through an online connection process in late April. More than $500,000 in prizes are awarded each year, two $200,000 grand prizes each and $100,000 prizes in category awards, half decided by public vote and half decided by a jury of art experts, plus a special award for the bestcurated venue will be awarded. ArtPrize started in 2009 when entrepreneur Rick DeVos decided to disrupt typical highly curated art prizes and created an art competition open to anyone willing to submit work and to award the world’s largest art prize, $250,000 that year, to a participating artist based solely on votes from the pu-

blic present at the event. Since it was founded, ArtPrize has grown and evolved to become one of the most important art exhibitions worldwide. In 2014 and 2015, ArtPrize was the most attended public art event in the world, according to The Art Newspaper’s annual “Big Ticket List.” Cast your Vote Visitors to Grand Rapids who experience the art get to register their opinions through two rounds of voting. Anyone over the age of 16 can register to vote and can cast their votes via mobile app, text message (SMS), and at artprize.org. On the first round, people can explore ArtPrize and vote for the entries they think should win. There are four voting categories: 2-D, 3-D, time-based, and installation. The second round of voting will include 40 finalists. Regardless of how they were selected, the voting public and the jury of art experts can consider all 40 finalists when choosing the winners of their respective awards. Project 1 by ArtPrize Despite its enormous success, ArtPrize is moving its Grand Rapids art competition to every other year and will alternate with “Project 1 by ArtPrize”— a new event to launch in 2019, aimed to engage a single artist or small group of artists to present a dynamic, citywide public art project. Project 1 by ArtPrize will take place September to October 2019 at sites in downtown Grand Rapids. It will include free educational and cultural programming that is open to the public. More information will be announced in early 2019.
