Coblenz Where the Rhine kisses the Moselle, Coblenz lies on a headland that fascinates with an eventful past: Archaeological finds date back to Roman times, the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument watches over the famous “Deutsches Eck” and in the old town the history column recalls 2000 years of history. A real highlight is the cable car ride up the Rhine to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which offers interesting exhibitions and a breath taking view over the two rivers.
Strasbourg From the very first minute the French city of Strasbourg enchants with colourful half-timbered idyll, Wilhelmine splendour architecture, new trend districts and exciting museums. Even a short visit has a long-term effect thanks to the many inspirations! In the picturesque district of La Petite France, the moment is right for you. Enjoy a perfect tarte flambée, before the imposing Münster with stainedglass windows and arcades invites you on a journey through time to the Gothic period. If you are free from vertigo, you should definitely take 332 steps up to the viewing platform to reach the the Vosges and the Black Forest.

Antwerp The heart of Flanders beats in Antwerp, the international centre of the diamond trade. And when it comes to the finest chocolate and the lively cultural scene, it beats even faster. The home of numerous fashion designers, painters and musicians was the largest city in Europe 400 years ago and bears witness to a splendid past with its historic city centre: a look into the hall of the main railway station or into the luxury department store “Stadsfeestzaal is worthwhile! In addition to thirteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 50 baroque Rubens works are on display in various museums.
Amsterdam Once you have pedaled shortly before the Rijksmuseum, you are already at Anne Frank's house, the trendy Jordaan quarter or in Vondel Park. But the rather small city of Amsterdam with its colourful houseboats, the flower market and the many shops can also be easily explored by foot. If you are looking for interesting perspectives, you should definitely take a canal trip! The Keukenhof is a real paradise for flower fans.
25
Trier The oldest city in Germany already made a name for itself 2000 years ago as a large Roman metropolis and is still affectionately called “Little Rome” today thanks to Porta Nigra, Kaisertherme and Amphitheater. Nowhere else can you experience antiquity so authentically north of the Alps. The monuments that give the UNESCO World Heritage Site its unmistakable character are outstanding. A highlight not only for historians.
Tip
Sightseeing Delft
Spessart Where the “oaks defiantly rise” and the “beeches carry green umbrellas” – the largest mixed deciduous forest in Germany and home of the brothers Grimm enchants with mysterious places and untouched nature: Medieval castles alternate with ancient tree populations and stories of times long gone awaken to new life. Here is the birthplace of Snow White, there the scene for the Hauff'sche Novelle and there the retreat of German Romance. After a visit to the fairytale Spessart, culture lovers, active vacationers and people looking for relaxation have a lot to tell.
26
Bring history to life: Your tour takes you through the canal-rich town of Delft, famous for its close links with the royal family. It became world famous through the baroque artist Johannes Vermeer and the enchanting ceramics, the “Delft Blue”. Have a look at the numerous sights and visit the porcelain manufactory, before moving on to classicism and courtly culture in The Hague. Look forward to many more land activities with VIVA Cruises.
Winery Allendorf The Allendorf family has lived in the romantic Rheingau since the 13th century and cultivates their love of nature and wine with great passion. “You can see that and above all taste it,” says Ulrich Allendorf, who cordially invites the guests of VIVA Cruises to an exclusive tasting of his world-famous wines. But you will get a small foretaste on board of our floating premium hotels – take a look at our wine list! Loreley In the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley, the bronze statue of the Loreley is enthroned on a slate rock and sparkles seductively in the evening sunshine. The myth described by Clemens Brentano and Heinrich Heine goes hand in hand with a natural event that in earlier times was the fate of many sailors: The rocky reefs come closer, the Rhine begins to gush and sets course for a sharp turn. Numerous ruins, castles and winegrowing villages observe this impressive spectacle, which to this day cannot be surpassed in drama and romance.
27
The Dutch Rhine Experience – 5 nights
Dutch Hanseatic cities Düsseldorf – Amsterdam – Düsseldorf Your route takes you past windmills and tulip fields to Friesland, where innumerable migrating birds take a break on their long journeys each year. You are well advised to give your eyes a rest as they wander the flat, marshy landscapes – because there is still plenty more to see! The most eye-catching sights include the crow-stepped gables of Kampen, the canals of Amsterdam and the Roman remains in Nijmegen. After a day of drinking in wonderful scenery, discuss the highlights as you tuck into a plate of steaming poffertjes – yet another feast for the eyes!
Highlights • Stroll through Worpplantsoen in Deventer – the oldest park in the Netherlands • Explore the history of the Hanseatic League in central Kampen • Let yourself be inspired by Roman antiquities, Old Masters and modern art at Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen • Marvel at the underground fortifications in Rees

In 1955 Fritz Allendorf took over 1.5 hectares of vineyards from his father. With his relocation to the vineyards and the continuous expansion of the business, he set the course for the future. Today we cultivate around 70 hectares and are thus the largest family-run winery in the Rheingau area. Despite its size, the winery has remained a family business in the best sense of the word: Here everyone can rely on everyone.

Wachau The small river valley is just 36 kilometres long, but it promises great experiences and is brimming with superlatives: UNESCO World Heritage sites, outstanding white wines and historic buildings. Between Melk and Krems on the untamed Danube lies an incomparable idyll, medieval castles enthrone on bizarre rock formations and apricot groves invite you to relax. Nature and culture in a very small space.
Schlögen Bend As if the Danube had forgotten something important, it changes its course by 180 degrees with concentrated force shortly before Linz to make its way back to Vienna along the steep granite slopes. The forces of nature that confront each other here are impressive. In 2008, the valley, framed by resinous fragrant forests, was named the “Natural Wonder of Upper Austria”. Probably the most beautiful view is obtained after a short hike to the viewing platform “Steiner Felsen”.
41
Vienna “Vienna, Vienna, you alone shall always be the city of my dreams.” What Peter Alexander once sang about is still valid today, for the Austrian capital has once again been chosen as one of the world's most livable metropolises. A must for Sissi fans are the baroque palace Schönbrunn and the imperial Hofburg. But also the picturesque old town testifies to the splendid history of the former empire. For a ride with the Ferris wheel of the Prater, an art exhibition in the Albertina as well as a cup of mélange in the coffee house should always be enough time.
Tip
Culinary Budapest Experience the high art of baking and high culture in Budapest:
Melk Abbey If the word “splendid” did not already exist, it would have to be invented for Melk Abbey. The largest unified baroque ensemble in Europe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers its high culture in its purest form. Since its foundation in 1089, the “gateway to the Wachau” has uninterruptedly been inhabited by Benedictine monks and impresses with precious frescoes, a marble hall, the collegiate church, and a library with historical book collections. The conjunction of art, culture, faith and science can still be felt today. The perfect place to recharge your batteries.
42
First you visit the famous St. Stephen's Basilica and its impressive interior. Continue through the small streets of the city to the Strudelhaus, where sweet and hearty delicacies from the Habsburg Empire are traditionally produced. Put your hand to the wheel, have your masterpiece baked and serve yourself with coffee! Freshly refreshed, you then stroll on to the most beautiful sights. Look forward to many more land activities with VIVA Cruises.

Your visit to the dynamic city of Linz is again perfectly juxtaposed against the natural elegance of Schlögen Bend, where time seems to stand still for a blissful moment.

That is the feeling you will get when you see the Baroque splendour of the former royal seat of Esztergom in Hungary for the first time. The same can be said of the Serbian city of Belgrade, which welcomes visitors with tales from its eventful history. It will also be difficult to tear yourself away from the traditional painted houses in the thousandyear-old town of Kalocsa. Despite such gems, your favourite place will surely be on board on the sun deck – the perfect place to take in the natural beauty of the Puszta as you glide serenely past.
• Stroll through the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna • Marvel at the elaborate Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest’s City Park • Feast your eyes on the stunning frescoes in the Votive Church in Mohács • Relax on the river island of Ada Ciganlija – “Belgrades’s beach”

Meissen It is the image of the brightly lit Albrechtsburg Castle that lets Meissen stand back in nothing compared to Neuschwanstein’s beauty and history. The oldest castle in Germany is a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture and birthplace of the famous Meissen porcelain. In the exhibition workshops you can see how the “white gold” from Saxony is transformed into fragile works of art. But the “cradle of porcelain” awaits with further highlights: From the Old Town over to the cathedral up to the wine road – there are no limits to exploration.
Tip
Usedom's seaside resorts
Usedom Before the unspoilt Stettiner Haff lies the island of Usedom in the Baltic Sea, which, with around 1906 hours of sunshine a year, has truly earned itself the nickname “sun island”. Historic villas and seaside resorts in the Wilhelminian style, cosy thatched houses and fine sandy beaches inspire in both the German and Polish parts. A stroll along Europe's longest promenade leads to the famous Imperial baths Heringsdorf, Bansin and Ahlbeck. Here you can find the listed sea bridge to marvel at, sniff some fresh sea air and take a stroll.
Follow in the footsteps of famous poets and thinkers through Usedom's seaside resorts: Your excursion takes you from Swinemünde to the seaside resort of Ahlbeck, where the old Emperor Mile awaits you. Stroll along the promenade to Heringsdorf and find out where Thomas Mann wrote the “Zauberberg” or where Emperor Wilhelm II asked for tea. Afterwards, the Usedom hinterland and a short city tour along historical buildings lure through the Polish Swinemünde. Look forward to many more land activities with VIVA Cruises.

Hamburg Hamburg loves water. The Hanseatic city counts as one of the largest seaports in the world, owns more bridges than Venice and its own National Park in the middle of the North Sea. Between Alster and Elbe, the famous red light district of St. Pauli is just as much a part of the sensation as the alternative Schanzenviertel and the modern HafenCity with the Elbe Philharmonic Hall. Discover historic backgrounds in the Kontorhausviertel and in the Speicherstadt, which belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. If you like it a bit quieter, you can stroll through the the winding alleys of the stair quarter in the noble Blankenese.
Szczecin Lagoon Where a gigantic glacier was enthroned 10,000 years ago, today there are extensive bog meadows, fine sandy beaches and the Brohmer mountains for hiking, bathing and relaxing. The Sczeczin Lagoon, the blue-green lagoon of the Baltic Sea, is probably the most beautiful section between Germany and Poland – and a jewel of untouched nature. Rare animals such as beavers, white-tailed eagles and kingfishers, the flying gems, find a protected home here between dense reed beds and light floodplain forests. It is the second largest lagoon in the Baltic Sea at the mouth of the Oder and Peene rivers, the “Amazon of the North”. Those who seek peace will find balm for the soul here.

The Seine Castles galore
Monet’s water lilies – magnifique! Maritime flair
Paris It is not hard to fall in love with the city of 1,000 lights thanks to the exciting contrasts between the magnificent boulevards and the small alleys with its numerous brasseries, boutiques and antique shops as well as galleries, such as the Marais. The beautiful promenades and bridges of the Seine are indispensable attractions of the city. Even those who prefer to take strolls off the beaten track should not miss out on legendary sights, such as Notre Dame, Montmartre, the Eiffel Tower as well as the Champs Elysees and the Jardin du Luxembourg.
58
The Rhône
Avignon Who has not heard the French folk song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”, which the city on the left bank of the Rhône is famous for. However, Avignon attained its true significance in the 14th century, when the Pope sought exile in the city because of military unrest. This marked the beginning of a time of prosperity that came along with the construction of Gothic monasteries and churches. The monumental Papal palace resembles a fortress with its jagged balustrades and massive towers and serves as a unique setting for an annual theatre festival. It not only attracts art lovers but also draws epicureans towards the picturesque lavender landscape of the Provence.

Dresden Semper Opera, Sistine Madonna, Zwinger Palace and the rebuilt Frauenkirche – Dresden is bursting with high-culture and surprises as the “Florence on the Elbe” with Mediterranean flair. After architectural monuments, baroque town houses and Gründerzeit quarters, you can stroll through the winding alleys of the old town and relax in rustic shops and charming cafés. Then there is Saxon Switzerland that attracts tourists with its castles, fortifications and unique nature experiences beyond the city gates.
Budapest “Pearl of the Danube” or “Paris of the East”? One thing is for sure – Budapest has a lot to offer! The Parliament buildings on the river banks are visible from afar and restore the Hungarian capital to its former glory. The impressive chain bridge invites you to explore the districts of Buda and Pest with their Art Nouveau buildings, wide avenues and historic thermal baths. The breathtaking view from the castle hill with its castle palace on the impressive fishing bastion will be even more enjoyable after a piece of the famous pyramid cake.
63
Nijmegen The oldest city in the Netherlands radiates original Dutch flair with its small cottages, cheese shops and delicacies on the “Grote Market”. The small alleys unite impressions from the past and present. Therefore, a visit to the Gothic St. Stevenskerk including the grave cellar as well as a stroll across the shopping street “Long Hezelstraat” should be on the sightseeing agenda. Take the perfect break afterwards with freshly fried Kibbelingen in the winterly Kronburger Park.
Passau The unification of the three rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz in Passau is unique. The rivers flow together from different compass directions and create a fascinating play of colours. The sight of the spectacle is magnificent from the 800-year-old Veste Oberhaus, Europe’s mightiest fortress. A visit to the baroque St. Stephen’s cathedral with its emposing Church organ enthroned on a hill is a “must”. In the three-river-city, southern flair is combined with Bavarian cordiality as well as culture and arts and crafts. A visit could not be more versatile.
