KILLEEN-TEMPLE-FORT HOOD, TX
Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood is a metropolitan statistical area in Central Texas that covers three counties - Bell, Coryell, and Lampasas.
Temple was founded as a railroad town in 1881, and was named after a Santa Fe Railroad official, Bernard Moore Temple. The Santa Fe railroad needed a central junction point for the hundreds of miles of track that were beginning to spread throughout the state. Temple has developed as a small city with a number of arts and retail amenities not typically associated with a smaller community. The primary economic drivers are the extensive medical community (mostly due to Scott & White Memorial Hospital) and goods distribution based on its central location and proximity to larger cities.
Until the 1940s the area remained a relatively small and isolated farm trade center, but this changed drastically after 1942, when Camp Hood (re-
commissioned as Fort Hood in 1950) was created as a military training post to meet the demands of the Second World War. Laborers, construction workers, contractors, soldiers, and their families moved into the area by the thousands, and Killeen became a military boomtown. The opening of Camp Hood also radically altered the nature of the local economy, since the sprawling new military post covered almost half of Killeen’s farming trade area. The loss of more than 300 farms and ranches led to the demise of Killeen’s cotton gins and other farmrelated businesses. New businesses were started to provide services for the military camp.
Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood is the demographic center of Texas. Located off Interstate 35 and with the major cities of Dallas, Houston and San Antonio less than three hours away, it is the transportation center as well. In fact, 84 percent of the state’s population is within three hours of Temple city limits.
