DISCOVER LODI

THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL IN LODI THAT WE’VE BEEN PERFECTING FOR A LONG TIME. Lodi has been growing winegrapes for over a hundred years. Today, it is the largest appellation in California with over 100,000 acres in production and over 125 different varieties. The seven (7) different soils in the region makes it one of the most diverse winegrape growing regions in the United States. In a sense, you can experience what the world offers from here. It is scenically nestled between the San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada Mountains with 85+ boutique wineries where 5th generation artisan winemakers are carefully crafting the next award-winning wine.

Lodi is surrounded by miles of open waterways and cycling routes. The charming streets of downtown are lined with restaurants, unique retail shops, remarkable breweries, and welcoming tasting rooms.

Explore a museum or watch the seasonal migration of Sandhill Cranes in the wild. Paddle along the Mokelumne River and the beautiful Lodi Lake. Cycle through the valley’s rich agricultural and viticultural landscapes.

If you love wine, outdoor adventures or discovering amazing new places with friendly people, then Lodi is the place for you. We invite you to discover for yourself a story as rich and deep as our fine wines.

WINE COUNTRY

85+ Wineries, 100 Varietals, Award-Winning Wine Region

NATURE

AND NURTURE COMBINE IN LODI to create one of California’s premier grape-growing and winemaking regions, with a history dating back to the 1850s. Lodi was an early wine capital of the West—some Zinfandel vines here are over 130 years old! Premium wine grapes cover approximately 100,000 acres in Lodi, more vineyard acreage than Napa and Sonoma combined.

This wealth of grapes and grape varieties create something for every wine lover’s palate, from everyday table wines to award-winning vintages. The Lodi Appellation includes over 450 labels and over 100 varietals. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Albariño, Tempranillo and Grenache are a few of the varietals available for tasting.

The rich soil of Lodi’s vineyards is crosscut with creeks and the Mokelumne River, and brushed with nighttime moisture from the Sacramento Delta. Generations of families have grown fruit and made wine here. One family’s son, Robert Mondavi, graduated from Lodi Union High School in 1933 as Class President, and headed off to Stanford University. Degree in hand, he returned to Lodi and began a career that would transform California’s international wine industry.

DID YOU KNOW

• Lodi is the birthplace of A&W Root Beer; the first batch was sold here in the summer of 1919.

• Downtown Lodi hosts a weekly farmers market during summer months, Thursdays 5–8 pm.

Wineries encircle the town, some surrounded by hundreds of acres of vineyards, others along the banks of the Mokelumne River.

Many current Lodi winemakers trace their careers and craft back to Robert Mondavi—just one thread of traditions stretching back generations of Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch and other immigrant families. One delightful aspect of Lodi wine tasting: you may be served by the winemaker, the owner, or a family member. Lodi’s wine families love to show off the fruits of their labors.

Visitors can drive, cycle or walk between tasting rooms.

Many Lodi wineries are only minutes from each other by car. Cyclists love the country roads surrounding Lodi, leading past scenic vineyards to break spots at lovely outdoor tasting rooms and winery picnic areas.

If you prefer to stroll between samples and sips, Downtown Lodi has eight tasting rooms within blocks of each other. This genuine wine region has both a historic and a modern sensibility. Decorative archways lead to streets lined with

wide brick paths, shaded during warm months by the leaves of tall trees. Outside tables are alive with conversation and the clink of glasses.

Explore the vintage clothing shops, modern boutiques, gift and antique shops, and stop for a tasty treat at Double Dip Gallery or Cheese Central. If you like a head on your drink, sample Lodi’s booming beer industry at one of downtown’s five brew pubs.

Other nearby attractions include the World of Wonders Science Museum and Hutchins Street Square, the region’s performing arts center. Or take the self-guided tour of 13 large, colorful murals, created by the famed Walldog Letterheads muralists and local artist, Tony Segale.

Lodi’s location between San Francisco Bay Area and the Sierra Nevada mountains puts it less than a two-hour drive for most Northern Californians. Lodi has an Amtrak station right downtown, with multiple trains stopping daily. Bikes are welcome on Capital Corridor trains.

Lodi events and festivals are visitor favorites! There are frequent downtown fairs, wine strolls and farmers markets during summer, plus popular annual festivals like the Sandhill Crane Festival, Wine & Chocolate Weekend, Wine & Food Festival, Lodi Wine Experience (formerly ZinFest), Parade of Lights and Lodi Beer Fest. Lodi hosts a year-round calendar of fun!

LODI ATTRACTIONS

History, animals, science, art, and culture make Lodi much more than just a wine-and-food destination.

FOR OVER 60 YEARS, the Micke Grove Zoo has entertained and delighted all ages. The zoo and other attractions are located in a beautiful, oak-forested park owned and operated by San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation. But the park is just the start of fun options that add to a Lodi wine country vacation, including olive oil tasting, museums, and the performing arts.

Micke Grove Regional Park’s 132 acres includes the zoo, San Joaquin County Historical Museum, a Japanese Garden, plus picnicking and outdoor recreation options. Many of the animals you’ll see at the zoo are part of national conservation programs designed to ensure the long-term survival of their

species. Primates on display include Golden Lion Tamarins, Red Ruffed Lemures and Spider Monkeys. Watch a Snow Leopard or Bobcat stretch in the sun. The zoo also includes a large aviary.

LODI MUSEUMS &

ZOO

• Micke Grove Zoo

• San Joaquin County Historical Museum

• World of Wonders Science Museum

The Historical Museum grounds stretch over 18 acres in the park, with exhibits that reveal the rich history of the region from the time of the Native American Miwok and Yokuts tribes through the development of modern agriculture. The Museum includes displays of historic buildings and a bygone way-of-life, including frontier-era black smith and harness shops, and a gold camp.

Micke Grove Japanese Garden dates back to 1959, when Japanese American “Duke” Yoshimura convinced the former landscape architect of the Imperial Palace of Japan, Nagao Sakurai, to design the 3-acre garden. Huge koi fish swim through the garden’s ponds and under its beautiful arch bridges. A large pavilion is a popular backdrop for weddings.

“The World of Wonders Science Museum has over 70 hands-on exhibits that stimulate discovery in young and old alike.”

Downtown Lodi’s many attractions include the World of Wonders Science Museum, featuring over 70 hands-on exhibits that stimulate discovery in young and old alike. Test your brainpower and marvel at wonders of science and technology.

Hutchins Street Square Performing Arts Theatre is a year round entertainment venue. The winter concert series includes touring and top regional performers and a classic children’s Nutcracker Ballet. In summer, take in Family Friday Movie Nights, or Music in the Park concerts.

Strolling in charming downtown Lodi between attractions, galleries and shops is entertaining in and of itself! Lovely arches span over wide sidewalks next to huge, shade trees. A wonderful series of 13 downtown murals were created by a group of 50 artists known as the Walldogs, who gathered from around the United States in 2006 to help commemorate Lodi’s 100th anniversary. Pick up a map for an entertaining walking tour of these large murals at the Downtown Lodi Visitors center, 25 N. School Street.

Did you know that A&W Root Beer got its start in Lodi?

Founder Roy W. Allen opened his first roadside root beer stand here in 1919. Within a year, he had opened multiple stands around the Central Valley and was pioneering curbside service. He would eventually partner with Frank Wright to create one of the world’s first restaurant chains. The community has carried on Allen’s legacy—Lodi holds the world’s record for the largest root beer float!

If you want to taste more than wine and root beer, how about some delicious olive oil? Lodi is known for its excellent olive production. Stop by the modern tasting room of Calivines Winery and Olive Mill, just off Interstate 5 and Highway 12, to sample its variety of award-winning flavors.

OUTDOOR ADVE NTURES

There are a number of ways to enjoy and explore the beautiful Lodi scenery, from birding to biking and even paddling.

THE MOKELUMNE RIVER flows along the edge of town, through the Lodi Lake Wilderness Area. This pristine landscape and nearby Cosumnes River Preserve attract thousands of migratory birds each year. Scenic walking trails crisscross these nature preserves. Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day under the trees, with an occasional dip of your toes in the cool waters.

Many area wineries include bocce ball courts and picnic grounds. One even offers a walking trail, an experience that

blends nature and the outdoors with the fruit of the vine.

For those seeking more active, adventurous fare, launch a paddle board, canoe, kayak or innertube into Lodi Lake’s calm waters. Or float down a serene stretch of the Mokelumne River, stopping for a break at a tasting room, or to drop in a line and fish for steelhead trout and salmon. Skydive at one of the largest drop zones in the United States at the Lodi Parachute Center. If hitting the green is your specialty and you have the

urge to enjoy a nice lush golf fairway, there are a number of excellent courses surrounding Lodi, both public and private.

Lodi is a very popular destination for cyclists, both experienced and novice. Beginners love the many gentle and less-trafficked routes, while experts can tackle longer rides along a network of rivers or up into the Sierra foothills. Ten of the region’s most entertaining bike routes are featured in the free BikeLodi brochure, available at the Visit Lodi Downtown Visitor Center or online at VISITLODI.COM. Favorites include a tour through the Cosumnes River Preserve, a

bird-watchers ride, “Family Fun Ride” and the “Winery Loop”.

Annually, Lodi is home to a wide variety of cycling events, including Cyclefest, Giro D’Vino and Tour delle Vigne’s 50K, 100K and 100-mile loops. Lodi has also served as a host city for the Amgen Tour of California.

With cool Delta breezes during the summer, temperate climate year-round and thousands of acres of open space, it’s no wonder that Lodi is known for so much more than its excellent wine!

Stama is a large-scale winery with an old-world charm and feel. The Kapiniaris family has a wine grape growing heritage that stretches back five generations to the vineyards of Southern Greece. They bottled their first vintage in 2005 under their own label, Stama, and their wines have since won awards in many competitions. The family farms 350 acres of premium wine grapes. The winery’s barrel tiled roof and arched doors gives the impression of being in a Venetian village in Greece. On many occasions, you will find the winemaker present as well as the owners, father and son. The winery is an ideal location for a wedding or event, and its beautiful grounds also have ample picnic space.
