Aymeric Nocus skates on different cities with a goal: to spread urban culture through his videos, writings and photography. After some years living in the French skateboarding Mecca, Bordeaux, he goes back to his hometown and talks to Dalmo Roger about how interaction with the streets helped him to be focused in the present moment. Also about his relationship with Magenta Skateboards and - not avoiding the regional trend topic - wine.

How has your French education prepared you for the skateboarding life ?

Nocus: I’m not sure if there is such a thing as a typical French education, but I did grew up in an average-size town in the dead middle of France, which is one of the less populated regions as well as one of the most rural & traditional areas of the country (despite only being 90 minutes from the effervescent & urban Paris). It is a very beautiful and quiet place to live, with some strong heritage. But besides the awe-inspiring remnants of its past history, as far as modern culture goes it insists on being a bit of a dead-end, which appears to turn a lot of people into frustrated

individuals. They can't understand why they don't see the bigger picture - they realize what a gap there usually is between their everyday routine and the way life is portrayed to them via pop culture, advertising, TV, magazines. They have the spontaneous, natural drive to do something with their existence, but a lot of them lack the energy or the courage to leave their comfort zone - and, as a result, their own little bubble eats them alive. The youth here is especially sad. As typical young people, they are full of energy and confidence to take over the world, but there is a lack of direction (and guidance from their older peers who lacked just as much). All their revolutionary power goes to waste, and it can be sickening.

After growing up in this environment, skateboarding was my direction. I took it up back in 1999 when I was 12 and started spending a lot of time outdoors - to my parents' dismay. Whenever I wasn't actually doing it, I was either sleeping and dreaming I was doing it, or studying it, trying to get my hands on as many videos & magazines as I could at the time (with the limited means we once had, it meant dubbed VHS copies, burnt CD-R's, two-week-long downloads of surprising files through eMule / Kazaa / Soulseek etc). I always appreciated the old stuff just as much as the new stuff, maybe because back then 'old' wasn't as synonymous to 'outdated' as it is today. We weren't constantly consuming then discarding shit - 'old'

was just another dimension of the 'new', something that was once 'new' just like what was new at the time and would soon become old in favor of something else 'new'... In that regard everything was cool.

Anyway I started traveling to skate as soon as I was 15, after I graduated high-school. I'd go around & through the country and meet people who also skated as passionately as I did. I feel like skateboarding was less of a clean-cut facade for people back then - even if you tried to pose as a skater you would be considered an outcast anyway, so might as well go all in and shred the fuck out of shit while you're at it. Seeing so many rippers around the country, sometimes in the most secluded, if not neglected areas, helped me realize how utmost essential youth energy was and had me start document it, notably through the act of skateboarding, taking photos, filming. Working with younger skaters was also a way for me to help those who needed a direction and hopefully - opened their minds to new fields of possibilities.

Tell me what motivates you.

Nocus: I have this ridiculous anguish that my existence is unavoidably going to be way too short for me to accomplish everything I want to

accomplish & express what I want to express. Now realistically, in life, you obviously can't just accomplish everything you begin with (if anything, for the sole fact that you are just one human being without the gift of ubiquity). Instead you have to make choices (whether or not those choices are for real is arguable) and it turns out to define where you are - substantially, but also geographically, the physical position.

This is very singular and, at the same time, changes constantly depending on every move you make, every thought you have. I'm always worried about where I am; however, when I'm skateboarding I know where I am. On my board, the pure present counts and everything else is out of the window. Plus it's the most fun & creative thing I know, in addition to being a physical activity which is healthy.

I actually associate part of my passion for skateboarding with a subconscious manifestation of fear of death (extinction would be more accurate) a lot of times. In many ways, skateboarding is a way to reclaim your time and space by performing a brutal activity that is physically so raw (due to relying on pure body language) that it essentially defines your present, validates your current choices, and helps you break down some precious time. Skate days always feel so much longer than non-skate days due to how much shit happens when you're out on the streets trying to do this thing. You treat your brain and overall body with exercise for

hours (often all the while not even realizing how much you put your carcass through), you meet people, you see scenes. No wonder why skaters tend to find non-skate days boring, although those same days - with the same activities - probably wouldn't feel boring to the average person - there definitely is a gap between what what they, and we, are used to taking in within the same time span.

Everyday skateboarding motivates me because it's the anchor to stability I need in order to stay sane. If I can't feel the road under my wheels my mind just wonders way too far and way too much and I become overwhelmed with creative impulses I can't always physically satisfy. The things I do on the side - writing, filming, shooting photos, drawing or even the music I used to play for a while - are nothing but mere attempts to alleviate those painful cravings. To quote Mark Johnson on the satisfaction of successfully getting a skateboarding trick, it all turns back into a pumpkin at midnight. Some of us just feel an urge to produce & concretize their vision excessively in comparison to what is even physically possible as a human being. The greatest artists, I think, are those tormented enough to push those physical limits to such lengths that their realizations have the exoticism of something extricated out of a very private land so completely foreign it naturally feels dramatically new to everybody else.

How do you involve yourself in the creative process when an important strategy needs to be made?

Nocus: I am not sure I completely understand the question, but if you mean when I have to work toward a definite set of goals (i.e.. in the context of a project...), I really don't do anything I wouldn`t normally do. I just let everything happen to me. I usually have more ideas than what is needed anyway. This article is going to be way too long, for instance. Classic SF-based skate photographer Richard Hart once requested that I contributed to his Push Periodical magazine with a brief article on early 1990's skate videos. A few days later, he had a straight-up essay in his email inbox that could have filled up an entire issue of his magazine (so I had to write a completely different article from the scratch in half an hour at the last minute, the one on Pat Brennen that eventually got published - although it had to be cut as well). And I had no problem with that, I could have come up with 20 articles on that theme had he asked me to. Magenta guestboard was going to look all kinds of crazy with several layers of photos, sketches, drawings, and scans of random objects such as leaves found on the floor in Japan before Soy curated it, undoubtedly for the best - he has this wiser, more reasonable eye and I'm really thankful for his input, I'm hyped on the final result. Also, I recently got to interview Tobin Yelland for Perth's James Whineray's new

magazine project "BILDE" and I'm sure I straight up assassinated the guy's spare time with my overly enthusiastic questions.

As far as skateboarding goes, I could easily film two video parts a day on a good day - the hardest part for me is finding filmers who can keep up with my pace (they should film constantly, follow me on the most absurd spots and never hit record twice). The less spontaneous the filmer, the more my energy goes to waste.

Recently I've been mostly filming with younger people who really can't film that well and/or only use their phones cameras, for they have the most stamina and innocence and, most importantly, they always get hyped on being involved in the making of something - it gives them an eye-opening example of how efficiently they can use their resources and if anything inspires them to find a direction and put it to good use. Budapest RIOS crew filmer Bence BĂ lint is my favorite filmer to work with. He's ridiculously good at fancy camera movement & angles & insanely creative with an eye for detail. He's also very responsive and films everything non stop, which is exactly how I think filming skateboarding should be - it allows the skater to focus on nothing but the pure act of skateboarding (almost as naturally as if they weren't being filmed and that's exactly when you get the most interesting results).

Is there a type of environment you prefer to take your photos ?

Nocus: Not really. I tend to like nature, but people and cities are nature too and the rest is what we're doing to nature (maybe that's natural too?). Everything is potentially interesting.

Can I answer you any question about the Brazilian scene?

Nocus: You can probably answer most of them, but really the best way for me to get an idea of it would be to come over and visit, seeing the place by myself. I don't follow much of the modern skateboarding portrayed on the mainstream media, but your country seems to have had a lot of big names in the spotlight (as of late, which is always great). Talent and recognition should not know physical borders.

In Europe, Brazil has this reputation of being so tough that no-one really gets to skate fresh gear or slick spots. Yet, those conditions are so hard and ultimately uplifting that in the end everyone rips.

When I was 13, I remember reading articles in skate mags bringing up Brazilian tales such as nollie flip crooked grinds on wooden boxes and boards with no nose. Alex Carolino would have three or four ads/

photos/sequences per magazine issue back then, always killer stuff and most importantly always switch. As a kid I would go as far as I could, thinking of questioning his stance and actually counting the regular footed tricks in his video parts - those were rare birds. Bob Burnquist was already one of the best before I started skating and I liked him on Antihero. And nowadays you have popular incredible technical skaters such as Tiago Lemos - my 40year-old friend at the skatepark who used to be a Lavar McBride fan in his youth is now obsessed by Tiago's skating, he always goes lengths to praise Tiago's latest impossible instagram clip or whatever, then proceeds to do the slowest nollie noseslide on the foot-high box. It's really funny.

I am aware of my ignorance in that field, I know those guys are just the tip of the iceberg. When I go to Brazil I want to learn my shit, watching old local videos and whatnot. I've naturally tried and done that in every country I've been to, it's a spontaneous process when you're truly into skating. I actually love finding out about new skaters and styles - the more unexpected the better. But my favorite means of doing that is actually skating with them.

Aymeric Nocus x Magenta Skateboards: can you tell us some stories about Magenta & the Bordeaux scene? Which French region is the most famous for its wine - I mean, skateboarding?

Nocus: Well, Magenta Skateboards is originally from Paris - the company was named that way because of the boulevard in which Soy Panday & Vivien Feil both lived at the time. Vivien & his brother Jean are actually from Strasbourg, but Leo (Valls) is from Bordeaux - where the architecture and the city layout really stands out as convenient for skating. So the Magenta office relocated there quite early. Bordeaux used to be a lot rougher 10 years ago - no dream marble, just stinking cobblestone & dilapidated warehouses by the river, dangerous areas & obscure happenings. At some point they reworked the entire downtown area with slick materials, laid out two square kilometers of marble, cleaned up a lot of the river front and put perfect little benches everywhere. Now the place is like a French version of South California, as long as you don't leave this two square kilometer perimeter (shit gets sketchy again). It is good because in the end you get a little bit of everything, both worlds: plastic & rugged. What really makes Bordeaux is its scene: they have (& attract) some of the most passionate activists in the country, as well as tons of OG's in general who know their shit and occasionally school the younger generation in positive regards.

They have killer skate shops as well, and a solid dynamism.

Bordeaux for 5 years, for a variety of reasons. But it is still one of my all-time favorite cities to skate and I kind of make a point to come back every now and then for a week or two. Paris is really good too, and I live closer to it again now. I was there just two days ago actually, filming with Soy Panday for a project.

About the wine, I can't really get down with that shit - you drive or take the train into (or from) Bordeaux and all you see fields and fields of grapevine. They all look so sad for the most part - squares of burntlooking plants, a lot of them GMO's or chemically treated in order to maximize profit (those who aren't are still indirectly contaminated either way), and a little private castle for the owners in the middle. To me that just screams desolation, frustration, death. It's definitely just a shitty preconceived mental picture but damn if it doesn't put me off what the rest of the world considers 'good' wine. I'd rather drink cheap local wine with my homies in Croatia, and they dilute it with water!

As far as Magenta goes, they've been going strong (and stronger and stronger) ever since they started out as a mere 'homie' company in 2010. They never expected any of the following they eventually got overseas. I was already so hyped on the company, I would go out of my way and order boards from Nozbone or buy them directly from Vivien even though I was already riding from another shop

at the time and getting other companies' boards for free. I've just always believed in the intent of the company to begin with, which is substance but also style, a message they dared suddenly bringing back in an era where everyone was struggling with ledge dancing & late varial flips - it was well-needed. Everyone behind the company is a lifer who breathes skateboarding - no shady business, just a pure passion-driven operation. Seeing as this is the type of people I naturally tend to gravitate around, we got along.

Leo was the first Magenta rider I ever got in touch with, right after the company started and he got on. Without knowing me all that much, as soon as we got in touch he straight up invited me to Bordeaux for a few days to meet the japanese Tightbooth Production (TBPR) crew - they were just starting to film for LENZ II, the only clip I have in that video is from those sessions even though we did film harder stuff, they kept the most spontaneous footage which is a flatground step hop trick filmed from afar. I had a yellow Antihero Julien Stranger board and a green Michael Sieben tee-shirt.

What are the recommended areas to visit up there?

Nocus: All of them.

I recently got to read that one Vivien Feil interview about Static IV. First of all I would like to say I'm a big fan of him.

As crazy as it sounds... Can I come & help pick grapes in France during the harvest ? I'm sure you know what I mean.

Nocus: Vivien is the living definition an original, genuine individual for sure - just as much as all skateboarders learn to become as maturity kicks in. The thing I am the most thankful to skateboarding for has to be how it helped make me more aware of all the subtleties in people, and how interesting everyone can be, in their very own, mostly private regard. Something I like about Magenta is that it seems to attract the uniquely-molded freaks & geeks skateboarding altogether used to attract in masses in its most core years, in 2016 - at a time where a lot of the younger generation representatives first discover skateboarding through a filtered, formatted - often strictly athletic & competitive - vision. Sometimes its following may stand out as a bit of a caricature to the untrained eye (and it certainly isn't the only company to attract misfits), but when you have the tendency to dig diversity in human beings as much as I happen to, being around those guys and the people they get together to skate & work with is always interesting, humbling & enriching.

I would like to advise your readers to look up Vivien's section in Philip Evans' first film "Scrum Tilly Lush" - such a cool project to

begin with, involving a lot of European countries, do yourself a favor with the necessary research - as well as in a local video his brother Jean made about a centuries ago, which you can find on YouTube : "Circus - video skate Strasbourg" - that was Vivien's first ever part and it's so sick. Look up Soy's underrated part in Pierre Prospero's 2006 "Jolie Routine" video as well, it's on YouTube under the name "Soy Panday Capital". Then shut that computer (or phone, or whatever new device will be out & in by the time this article comes out) off and go skate - or even just outside altogether.

Also you can visit anywhere anytime, but seeing as we're both skateboarders you know I know you know that already. As far as the harvest, fruit is good for your body as long as it's raw & unaltered and grapes are no exception - picking them won't destroy your back as much as constantly filming fisheye, that's for sure.

Any plans to come to Brazil with the crew ?

Nocus: I would love to. The closest I ever got to Brazil was Chile, Bolivia & Peru earlier this year but that was a mere holiday - and I hate being a tourist. I want to go to as many places as possible, meet as many people as possible, see as many things as possible and hear as many stories as possible - that's my motto. Financially it

can be hard to make it happen sometimes - I tend to do everything out of the love to the point where I suck as selling myself, so I pay most everything out of my own pocket and spend my time losing money - but I'm trying my best. I'm always down!

Versão Brasileira COMO A EDUCAÇÃO FRANCESA TE AJUDOU NA VIDA DE SKATISTA? Nocus: Não sei se dá pra falar em uma típica educação francesa, mas eu de fato cresci numa cidade no meio do nada no interior da França. É uma das áreas menos populosas e mais rurais e tradicionais do país, apesar de estar a 90 minutos da efervescência urbana de Paris. É um lugar muito bonito e sossegado pra viver, com muita coisa histórica inspiradora. Mas de vida cultural moderna não tem nada: é fim de rua. Isso leva muitas pessoas a se tornarem indivíduos frustrados, que não conseguem perceber a distância entre o dia a dia deles e a vida que a TV e as propagandas vendem. Eles têm uma certa espontaneidade natural de fazer algo com a sua existência, mas muitos não têm

energia ou coragem de sair da zona de conforto. O resultado é que essa pequena bolha come eles vivos. A juventude aqui é especialmente triste.

Como típicos jovens, os caras são cheios de energia e confiança pra dominar o mundo, mas geralmente não têm metas ou uma orientação dos mais velhos. Todo um poder revolucionário que vai pro lixo.

Então eu cresci nesse ambiente, mas o skate foi minha direção. Eu caí pra cima em 1999, quando tinha 12 anos e passava muito tempo na rua andando - pra desgosto dos meus pais. Sempre que eu não estava fazendo isso, estava sonhando que eu estava fazendo isso ou pesquisando sobre skate. Tentava conseguir uns vídeos e revistas com os meios limitados que tínhamos: cópias duplas de VHS, CD-Rs queimados, downloads que levavam duas semanas pelo eMule / Kazaa / Soulseek etc. Eu sempre apreciei o material antigo tanto quanto o material novo, talvez porque naquela época velho não era sinônimo de desatualizado como é hoje: não consumíamos pra descartar em logo seguida. Velho era apenas uma outra dimensão do novo, algo que já foi novo e que se tornou antigo em favor de outra coisa nova... pensando assim, tudo era legal.

De qualquer forma, eu comecei a viajar pra andar de skate com 15 anos, logo depois de me formar no colégio. Eu ia viajando ao redor do país e conhecendo pessoas que também andavam de skate tão apaixonadamente quanto eu. Sinto que o skate era uma fachada limpa naquela época. Mesmo se você fosse um poser, você seria considerado

um skatista. Podia fazer o que quisesse e zoar tudo que quisesse porque era skatista. Ver tantos cabulosos por todo o país, às vezes em áreas bem isoladas, me ajudou a perceber o quão extrema era a energia da juventude. Tive que começar a documentar aquilo tudo, filmando, desenhando e fotografando. Enquanto trabalhava com os skatistas mais jovens, estava também ajudando aqueles que eu sentia que precisavam de direção e abrindo a mente pra novas possibilidades.

O QUE TE MOTIVA? Nocus: Eu tenho essa angústia que minha existência é inevitavelmente muito curta pra realizar tudo o que eu quero realizar; expressar tudo que quero expressar. A real é que na vida você não pode fazer tudo.

Pra começar, porque você é apenas um ser humano, sem o dom da ubiquidade. Tem que fazer escolhas (por mais que se possa discutir o quão reais são essas escolhas) e as escolhas que você faz acabam definindo onde você está, sua posição geográfica e física. Esta posição é muito singular e, ao mesmo tempo, muda constantemente de acordo com cada movimento ou pensamento. Eu estou sempre preocupado em saber onde estou. Mas quando estou andando de skate eu sei exatamente onde estou. No meu skate, o que conta é apenas o momento presente: tudo mais está fora. Além disso, é a coisa mais divertida e criativa que eu sei fazer, além de ser uma atividade física saudável.

Na verdade, eu associo parte da minha paixão pelo skate a uma manifestação inconsciente de medo da morte. De muitas maneiras, o skate é uma maneira de reclamar seu tempo e espaço por meio de uma atividade brutal, fisicamente crua. Por depender de linguagem corporal pura, o skate define o presente, valida suas escolhas, ajuda a passar um tempo precioso. Os dias em que ando de skate sempre passam mais devagar do que os dias em que não ando. Porque você trata seu cérebro e corpo com esse exercício por horas, muitas vezes durante todo o tempo, e nem percebe o quanto você coloca sua carcaça pra se mexer - e ainda pode conhecer pessoas, ver cenas loucas. Não me admira que skatistas achem dias sem skate mais chatos, embora esses mesmos dias, com as mesmas atividades, provavelmente não sejam chatos pra uma pessoa normal. Definitivamente, existe uma lacuna entre os não skatistas e nós, skatista, em relação ao tempo.

Andar de skate todos os dias é a âncora pra minha estabilidade, me mantém são. Se eu não sinto o asfalto sob as rodas, minha mente divaga demais e com muita intensidade: eu fico sobrecarregado com impulsos criativos que nem sempre podem ser satisfeitos fisicamente.

As coisas que eu faço em paralelo - escrever, filmar, tirar fotos, desenhar, tocar - nada mais são do que tentativas de aliviar essa ânsia.

Citando Marc Johnson, sem andar de skate tudo se transforma em abóbora à meia-noite. Alguns de nós sente um desejo muito grande

de produzir e concretizar a própria visão; os maiores artistas, penso eu, são aqueles atormentados o suficiente pra empurrar os limites físicos. As realizações têm o exotismo de algo que se livrou de uma terra muito particular de modo completamente estranho, fazendo com que o artista se sinta dramaticamente novo em relação ao mundo.

COMO VOCÊ DESENVOLVE SEU PROCESSO CRIATIVO QUANDO PRECISA DE UMA ESTRATÉGIA IMPORTANTE? Nocus: Não tenho certeza se entendi a pergunta. Mas se você quis saber como funciono quando tenho que trabalhar em direção a um objetivo definido, como um projeto, eu realmente não faço qualquer coisa que eu não faria no dia a dia. Deixo tudo acontecer de maneira natural.

Tenho um exemplo: o fotógrafo californiano Richard Hart, que mora em São Francisco, uma vez pediu que eu publicasse na sua revista Push Periodical um breve artigo sobre vídeos de skate do início dos anos 1990. Alguns dias depois, ele tinha no e-mail material pra uma edição inteira da revista. Acabei escrevendo outro artigo completamente diferente, do zero, em meia hora, sobre aquele Pat Brennen. Não tive nenhum problema com isso, poderia ter escrito mais de 20 artigos sobre esse tema. Além disso, há pouco eu comecei a entrevistar Tobin Yelland pra nova revista de Perth James Whineray

BILDE" e tenho certeza absoluta de que assassinei o tempo livre do cara com as minhas perguntas excessivamente empolgadas.

EXISTE UM TIPO DE AMBIENTE ONDE VOCÊ PREFERE FOTOGRAFAR?

Do jeito que meu skate está indo, em um bom dia eu poderia facilmente filmar duas partes de vídeo. A parte mais difícil seria encontrar filmers que aguentassem o ritmo: tem que filmar constantemente, me acompanhar pelos picos mais absurdos e nunca apertar o record duas vezes. Quanto menos espontâneo for o filmer, mais minha energia vai para o lixo. Tanto que eu tenho filmado com pessoas mais jovens, que não sabem filmar muito bem e/ou utilizam apenas as câmera do telefone.

Eles têm mais resistência e inocência, e acham que o mais importante é estar envolvido em algum projeto. Isso dá abertura e prova que seus recursos podem ser eficientes, além de inspirar a encontrar uma direção.

Nocus: Na verdade não. Tenho tendência a gostar da natureza, mas as pessoas e as cidades são natureza também... e o resto é o que estamos fazendo com a natureza (mas que talvez seja natural). Tudo é potencialmente interessante.

Bence Balint, da crew Budapest RIOS, é o meu filmer favorito para trabalhar. Ele é ridiculamente bom em movimento de câmera modernas, sensível, tem ângulos incrivelmente criativos e um ótimo olho pra detalhes. Ele filma tudo non stop, que é exatamente como eu acho que as filmagens de skate devem funcionar - isso permite que o skatista se concentre em nada além do mais puro ato do skate, quase como se não estivesse sendo filmado. É exatamente assim que você consegue os resultados mais interessantes.

POSSO TE RESPONDER ALGUMA PERGUNTA SOBRE A CENA BRASILEIRA? Nocus: Provavelmente a maioria delas, mas a melhor maneira de eu ter uma ideia sobre a cena seria visitar e vê-la por mim mesmo. Eu não sigo muito do skate moderno retratado pela mídia mainstream, mas o seu país parece ter um monte de grandes nomes no centro das atenções atuais (assim como antigamente também, o que é incrível).

Talento e reconhecimento não devem ter fronteiras físicas.

Na Europa, o Brasil tem essa reputação de ser um lugar tão difícil de andar que ninguém começa a manobrar com peças novas ou em picos perfeitos. Mas essas condições são a razão pra andarmos de skate do jeito que andamos. Quando eu tinha 13 anos, lembro de ter lido matérias em revistas de skate sobre brasileiros com nollie flip crooked em caixotes de

madeira ou com shapes sem nose. Lembro de, na época, o Alex Carolino ter três ou quatro anúncios/fotos/sequências por edição numa revista, sempre marretas e, o mais importante, sempre switch. Desde criança eu ia longe com o pensamento de questionar a base dele, contando as manobras regulares em suas partes de vídeo. Aquilo era raridade.

Bob Burnquist já era um dos melhores antes de começar a andar, eu gostava dele na época da Antihero. Hoje em dia há técnicos incríveis, muito populares - como Tiago Lemos. Meu amigo de pista, que tem mais de 40 anos e era fã do Lavar McBride, agora está obcecado pelo Tiago Lemos. Quando vamos andar ele sempre comenta sobre o mais recente vídeo do Instagram do Tiago, fala como ele dá manobras nas bordas mais altas e é mais controlado que tudo. É muito engraçado.

Estou ciente da minha ignorância, e sei que esses caras são apenas a ponta do iceberg. Se eu for ao Brasil, quero aprender essas coisas, assistir vídeos locais antigos e outras paradas. Fiz isso naturalmente em todos os países em que já estive, é um processo espontâneo no skate. Amo descobrir novos skatistas e estilos inesperados. Mas o meu meio favorito de fazer isso é andando de skate com os caras.

SOBRE A COLLAB AYMERIC NOCUS X MAGENTA SKATEBOARDS: VOCÊ PODE CONTAR ALGUMAS HISTÓRIAS SOBRE MAGENTA E A CENA DE BORDEAUX?

QUAL REGIÃO FRANCESA É A MAIS FAMOSA PELOS SEUS VINHOS, QUERO DIZER, PELO SKATE? Nocus: A Magenta é originalmente de Paris, e tem esse nome por causa da avenida em que Soy Panday e Vivien Feil viviam na época. O Vivien e seu irmão, Jean, são na verdade de Estrasburgo, mas o Leo Valls é de Bordeaux - e por lá a arquitetura e layout da cidade são um destaque pro skate. Assim, o escritório da Magenta se instalou por lá desde muito cedo. Bordeaux costumava ser muito mais pesada há 10 anos, nada de "mármore dos sonhos". Eram basicamente paralelepípedos fedorentos e armazéns degradados ao redor do rio, áreas bem perigosas onde rolavam alguns acontecimentos obscuros. Mas teve um momento de revitalização: dois quilômetros quadrados de mármore, além da limpeza da orla do rio e bancos perfeitos por todo centro. Agora é como uma versão francesa do sul da Califórnia, contanto que ninguém lembre que são apenas dois quilômetros quadrados de perímetro e que de lá pra fora a merda fica clara outra vez. No final, você tem um pouco de tudo; dois mundos: um perfeito e outro rústico. Mas o que realmente faz de Bordeaux uma cena é que a cidade atrai alguns dos ativistas mais apaixonados do país, assim como vários old schools que sabem o que fazem e transmitem coisas positivas à geração mais nova. Em Bordeaux também há lojas de skate incríveis e um certo dinamismo sólido.

Na verdade, eu me mudei de volta para minha cidade natal no ano passado, depois de viver em Bordeaux por 5 anos. Mas ainda é um das minhas cidades favoritas pra andar de skate, e eu cheguei num ponto de voltar sempre que posso, por uma ou duas semanas. Paris também é muito bom e eu vivo mais perto de lá agora. Estava lá há dois dias na verdade, filmando com Soy Panday para um projeto.

Sobre o vinho, eu realmente não posso descer com essa merda. Você dirige ou toma o trem em (ou de) Bordeaux e tudo que você vê por milhas são campos e campos de videira. Tudo parece tão triste - quadrados de plantas queimadas pro futuro, muitos deles OGM ou quimicamente tratados a fim de maximizar o lucro (aqueles que não são, estão indiretamente contaminados de qualquer forma) e um pequeno castelo privado pros proprietários no meio. Para mim, isso só grita desolação, frustração, morte. É definitivamente apenas uma imagem mental preconcebida que o resto do mundo considera "vinho bom". Eu prefiro beber vinho local barato com meus manos na Croácia. Eles diluem com água!

Já a Magenta tem ficado cada vez mais forte desde o dia em que se lançaram como uma simples empresa local em 2010. Eles não esperavam nada do que conseguiram mundo afora. Eu já era tão aficcionado pela marca que desviava do meu caminho só pra comprar shapes de Nozbone ou diretamente do Vivien (mesmo tendo patrocínio de

outra loja na época ou ganhando shapes de graça de outras marcas).

Pra começar, eu sempre acreditei no propósito deles, que é essência e estilo - uma mensagem que se arriscaram a defender em tempos de ledge dancing & late varial flips. Tudo isso foi muito necessário.

Todo mundo nessa companhia respira skate: não é um negócio qualquer, é uma operação movida a paixão. Ver esse tipo de gente me dá uma vontade natural de ficar por perto, de fazer parte.

Leo foi o primeiro cara da Magenta com quem entrei em contato, logo após o começo da companhia. Sem me conhecer, ele logo me convidou pra ir a Bordeaux por alguns dias e conhecer o pessoal da japonesa Tightbooth Production (TBPR), que estava recém começando a filmar pra LENZ II. O único clipe que eu tenho naquele vídeo é daquelas sessões. Apesar de termos filmado coisas bem pesadas, eles mantiveram o trecho mais espontâneo, que é um flatground step hop trick à distância. Eu tinha um board Antihero amarelo do Julien Stranger e usava uma camiseta verde do Michael Sieben.

QUAIS ÁREAS VOCÊ RECOMENDA VISITAR EM BORDEAUX? Nocus: Todas elas.

HÁ POUCO EU LI UMA ENTREVISTA DO VIVIEN FELL SOBRE STATIC IV. ANTES, PRECISO DIZER QUE SOU UM GRANDE FÃ DO CARA. ENTÃO POR MAIS LOUCO QUE SOE… POSSO AJUDAR A PEGAR UVAS NA FRANÇA DURANTE A TEMPORADA DE COLHEITA? TENHO CERTEZA DE QUE VOCÊ ME ENTENDE. Nocus: Vivien é a definição viva de um indivíduo original e genuíno, isso é certo - tanto quanto todos os skatistas deveriam aprender com a maturidade. O que me faz mais grato ao skate é como ele me ajudou a ser mais consciente das sutilezas das pessoas, e a perceber como cada uma delas pode ser interessante a seu modo. Tem outra coisa que eu gosto demais na Magenta: como a marca atrai todos os freaks & geeks do skate. Isso em 2016, quando grande parte da nova geração descobriu o skate por um filtro bem formatado pela competição e pelas questões atléticas. Às vezes os seguidores da marca podem até parecer meio caricatos para os olhares menos treinados, mas quando se tem uma tendência a cavocar diversidade humana, como eu tenho, ficar perto dessas pessoas e das pessoas que eles trazem pra andar de skate e trabalhar é sempre interessante e enriquecedor.

Aliás, queria dar uma sugestão aos leitores: ver a seção do Vivien no primeiro filme do Philip Evan, Scrum Tilly Lush. É um projeto muito massa que envolve uma série de países europeus. Tem também um vídeo local que ele fez com o Jean, irmão dele, de muito tempo atrás (tem no YouTube): Circus: Video Skate Strasbourg. Foi a primeira participação do Vivien e é foda. Outra dica: a participação do Soy no vídeo de 2006 do Pierre Prospero, que no YouTube tem o nome de Soy Panday Capital. Depois disso, é fechar o computador ou o telefone (ou o dispositivo que estiver em alta quando sair essa matéria) e andar de skate - ou apenas ir pra rua com outras pessoas.

Ah, e você pode visitar qualquer lugar a qualquer hora, sabemos bem disso porque somos skatistas. Quanto à colheita, frutas são boas pro corpo desde que estejam cruas e inalteradas - e uvas não são exceção. Colhê-las não vai destruir suas costas tanto quanto filmar frequentemente com fisheye, isso eu garanto.

PLANOS DE VIR AO BRASIL COM O CREW? Nocus: Adoraria. O mais perto que cheguei do Brasil foi Chile, Bolívia e Peru no início desse ano, mas foi só um feriado (e eu odeio ser turista). Quero ir ao maior número possível de lugares, conhecer o maior número de pessoas, ver a maior quantidade de coisas, ouvir o maior número possível de histórias - essa é minha busca.

Financeiramente pode ser difícil de fazer isso às vezes, e eu tenho tanta vontade de fazer as coisas acontecerem que às vezes pago tudo do meu bolso e acabo perdendo dinheiro. Mas estou melhorando! ÚLTIMAS PALAVRAS. Eu ainda insisto na conversa da relação entre skatista e fotógrafo, que é uma realidade muito importante no skate, desde sempre. Eu acredito muito que a amizade e a proximidade entre um skatista e um fotógrafo é essencial para uma sessão divertida e, consequentemente, uma imagem boa.

I still insist on the discussion on the relationship between skateboarder and photographer, which is a very important reality in skateboarding, forever. I really believe that friendship and closeness between a skateboarder and photographer is essential for a fun session and a good image.

Mais legal ainda é quando um fotógrafo anda de skate no mesmo nível, ou próximo, que o skatista fotografado. Aí a sessão se torna outra coisa, mais do que uma sessão fotos. Um dos caras que eu mais lembro quando penso nessa situação, é o fotógrafo/skatista Allan Carvalho.

Ele me contou uma história dessas que rolou com o Pedro Biagio em Maringá:“Eu gosto de andar de skate, desde sempre! Tipo em Maringá, eu fui fazer umas fotos do Pedro, ai vi esse pico da árvore. Ai eu tava na sessão, e ele tem uma noção brutal de enquadramento e fotografia, fora que anda muito de skate. Passei minha câmera pra ele, dei uma arrumada nos flashes e falei: Se vira! Faz uma foto minha”

Mas voltando ao Allan skatista, desde o final do ano passado ele tem saído na sessão com o João, videomaker amigo dele produzindo fotos e vídeos andando. Esse material ficou bem bom e a gente decidiu usar esse material como álibi para conversar mais com ele sobre outros assuntos que eu também sempre quis saber dele.

Pra quem conhece o Allan, sabe que ele tem uma relação muito forte com a religião. Isso tem o ajudado muito a guiar a sua vida, sua carreira e nas relações com outros skatistas e na vida: “a gente vê muitos talentos sendo perdidos por causa das drogas e várias outras coisas erradas, e isso sempre me ajudou muito”.

Como isso ajudou muito a passar por cima das loucuras da vida, a vontade dele em compartilhar esse ponto de vista é muito importante: “esses dias a gente estava em um campeonato, falei pra um amigo, que agora que ele está a pampa, essa é a hora que tem que se vigiar, não pode vacilar, se alguém vier tretar com você do nada, desencana, é igual na rua, você vai ficar brigando no trânsito? Você num é besta, né? Vai levar um tiro do nada, por nada. Logo depois dessa conversa, teve uma desavença com um outro cara lá e rolou uma treta. Ai ele veio em seguida me falar: - Pô, tu tinha acabado de me falar isso e eu não entendi. No outro dia eu encontrei ele e a conversa foi outra, ele estava mais tranquilo, mais consciente, entendeu a mensagem”.

Coolest is when a photographer skate on the same level, or near, the skateboarder. Then the session becomes anything more than a photo session. One of the guys that I remember the most when I think on this situation, is the photographer / skateboarder Allan Carvalho.

He told me a story that happened with Pedro Biagio in Maringa, "I like to skate, always! In Maringa, Paraná state, Brazil, I went to take some photos of Pedro, and I saw a spot on a tree.

I was in the session, and he has a sharp sense of framing and photography, and he skate a lot. I gave my camera to him, kind of set up the flashes and said: “Make it happen! Make a picture of me here."

But back to Allan skateboarder, since the end of last year he has been on the streets with John, his friend videomaker producing photos and videos. This material is very good and we decided to use it as an alibi to talk more with him about other matters that I also always wanted to know about him.

For those who know Allan, you know he has a very strong relationship with religion. This has greatly helped him to guide his life, his career and his relations with other skateboarders, "we see many talents being lost because of drugs and other wrong things, and it always helped me a lot to deal with it."

As it helped him a lot to go over the follies of life, his will to share this view is very important: "These days we were on an event, I told a friend, that now he is fine, this is the time where we have to watch, we can not fight or anything like that, if someone comes to you in a meaning way, with no reason, so just forget about it. Is like when we are in the street, you will be fighting in traffic? You are not stupid, right? It will be shot for nothing. Soon after this conversation, he had a problem with another guy and there were a fight. Then he came after me and said: ”man, you'd just tell me that and I didn’t understand.” The other day I found him again and the conversation was different, he was calm, more aware, understood the message."

É uma raridade o caso dele, caso alguém não saiba, ter um salário como fotógrafo de skate: “eu fico muito feliz por isso. Eu colaborava com eles a tempos, um dia eu conversei com o Pietro sobre essa minha necessidade e ele concordou totalmente, então a gente se acertou para isso acontecer e ser uma condição legal pra revista e pra mim. Estou bem feliz com essa condição e eu sei que eles também.”

His case is very rare in brazil, if someone does not know, have a salary as a skateboarding photographer is rare: "I am very happy for it. I used to contribuit to the magazine a lot, but one day I went to talk to Prieto about my need and he agreed completely, then we made it happen and be a good condition for magazine and me. I am very happy with this condition and I know they are as well."

“eu não acho que as coisas que eu toco, vá fazer alguém de um outro universo musical se interessar, mas se interessar eu já vou achar incrível e ver o que tem pra conversar, se for uma conversa de coração mesmo, eu estou aberto. Isso é uma coisa que o skate me ensinou, numa sessão você encontra de tudo, todos os tipos de seres humanos, todas as personalidades, todo tipo de gente. O skate faz com que você pense do seu jeito. Pensar em criar a sua realidade seja lá do que você curta ou esteja acostumado a viver e fazer. Esse é o motivo que acredito vermos tantos skatistas fazendo música, fotografia, cinema, pinturas, design e tantas outras formas de expressão com uma identidade muito forte e completamente diferente do que se aprende em cursos e escolas de qualquer lugar do mundo.

Skateboarding makes you think your own way, think to creat your reality whatever you like to do or used to do, that's why I believe we see so many skaters making music, photography, cinema, paintings, design and many other forms of expression with a very strong identity and completely different from what is learned in courses and schools anywhere in the world.

Na música é fácil ver essa influência e pra mim, aqui no Brasil, temos grandes exemplos dessa conexão. Uns dias desses consegui uma fita cassete do Guilherme Granado, um amigo skatista das épocas da Prestige e do centro de São Paulo, no meio dos anos 90, que me lembrou o quanto era insano conseguir músicas novas, independente e com uma linguagem nova naquelas épocas. Coisa que a tecnologia facilitou extraordinariamente, ainda bem.

Então porque uma fita cassete em pleno 2016? Qual a graça?

Qual a vantagem? Usei isso de desculpa pra trocar umas idéias com o Guilherme, gravamos a conversa em vídeo e o áudio você pode ouvir na íntegra pelo site. O Granado compartilhou sua opinião sobre as fitas, skate underground, revolução digital, avant garde universitário, fanzine, Lindolfo Oliveira :: Bs kickflip up música paga, mp3, vinil, cds e outras idéias. Assim como, disponibilizou gratuitamente, duas músicas inéditas, sendo que uma delas estará em seu próximo álbum.

Music is the easiest to see that influence for me, here in Brazil we have great examples of this connection. A few days ago I got a tape cassette of Guilherme Granado, a skateboarder friend from Prestige skatepark and downtown São Paulo 90s, which reminded me how much was insane to get new independent music and with a new language back than, something that technology remarkably helped, thank god.

So why a tape cassete in full 2016? what's funny? what advantage? I used it as an excuse to exchange some ideas with him about it and much more. We recorded the conversation on video and audio, so you can see and listen everything on our website. Granado shared his opinion about cassetes, underground skateboarding, digital revolution, avant garde university music, fanzine, paid music, mp3, vinyl, CDs and so much other stuff. As well he provided, for free, two new songs, one of which will be on his next album.

“Hoje a street art se tornou internet art, você vê muito mais seus trabalhos na rede do que nas ruas. É diferente de quando eu comecei e foi até difícil aceitar isso. Mas no fim foi algo que trouxe muitas coisas para a minha carreira”.
