Vista Chamber President & CEO Rachel Beld

I have always believed in the importance of taking risks and trying new things. It's a philosophy that has shaped my personal and professional life, and recently, I had the opportunity to practice what I preach by tandem skydiving with the US Army Golden Knights. This thrilling adventure reminded me of the powerful impact that stepping out of our comfort zones can have on our personal and professional growth. In the world of business and commerce, risk-taking is often seen as a double-edged sword. On one hand, it carries the potential for failure and loss. On the other hand, it opens doors to innovation, learning, and growth. My skydiving experience was a vivid example of this paradox. The moment I was launched out of that airplane, I was outside of my comfort zone, facing a risk that had my heart pounding. It was a stark contrast to my usual day-to-day activities, where I'm used to making more routine decisions. What surprised me the most was the sense of liberation I felt while freefalling from the sky. The fear and uncertainty were quickly replaced by exhilaration and a newfound sense of freedom and awe. This experience mirrored what often happens in the business world. When we take calculated risks, we break through the constraints of conventional thinking, allowing ourselves to explore new ideas, markets, and strategies. We can see things in a totally new way, making room for innovation, and as a result, our businesses have the potential to soar to new heights. My skydiving adventure also taught me that risks are often more manageable than they appear. Much like in business, I had a team of professionals who guided me through the process, ensuring my safety and even giving me a big shove to start the momentum. This is a valuable lesson for any leader. In business, we have the support of our team, advisors, and mentors to help us navigate the challenges that come with taking risks. It's essential to seek guidance and support when venturing into the unknown. Embracing change, taking risks, and trying new things are fundamental to success in today's ever-evolving business landscape. Just as my skydiving experience expanded my horizons and taught me valuable lessons, businesses that are willing to step outside their comfort zones can discover new opportunities, innovate, and grow. It's a principle that I'll continue to champion as the CEO of the Vista Chamber of Commerce, and one that I hope inspires others to take that leap of faith, just as I did when I jumped out of that airplane. Wishing you the very best in the new year ahead - may you dive into innovation and new horizons! Cheers,

Rachel Top: Free falling at 120mph, this is the exact moment my insides felt like they might become my outsides. (They stayed put, thankfully.) Middle left: The view from 12,500 feet was spectacular. Thank you to my US Army Golden Knight partner! Middle right: Just before the jump, unsure what exactly to expect but excited for the experience of it all. And feeling pretty legit in my flight suit. Bottom: I was in awe. Our world is so very big and we are so very small. So much gratitude for this experience. VISTACHAMBER.ORG

WestBrew located in Vista, California opened their business in October of 2020. Their plans were already set into motion when the world shut down. has been working with the City of Vista and the Vista Chamber of Commerce since day one. Josh Shreer, the co-owner, paid a quick tribute to the assistance provided by the VCC in obtaining a grant to support their business. Collaboration with the Chamber in grant seeking is an excellent benefit to membership. Another way they will partner with the VCC is the opportunity for their Vista location to host to an upcoming mixer. This provides the chance to share their space with new and prospective Chamber members. Mixers are a great way to make new connections and secure partners in the Vista area.

...in the heart of Vista’s brewing land!

In talking with Ally Serrato, the event director and marketing manager, she said she found her way to the job by visiting their location as a guest. Over time, she became friends with Josh and Heather and a professional relationship evolved from there. It was a natural progression into the WestBrew family and now Ally is dedicated to providing excellent onsite events. It is clear they are ready to host any variety of event type. With the Vista location offering both indoor and outdoor spaces they can transform the property to fit your needs. If you’re considering booking an event, Ally recommends reaching out right away. She is looking forward to working with you and creating exactly what you require. To schedule an event email Ally at marketing@westbrew.com. The Vista location at 1061 La Mirada Court is in the heart of Vista’s brewing land! In this area of Vista, you can find a variety of options, making WestBrew’s location ideal for a day of beer tasting in Vista. Unique to the area WestBrew offers in-house dining. Over the summer, the WestBrew Vista location has started to offer a food menu. Just in time for the football season they are offering a weekend promotion beginning at 10 AM! Here you can find a special for $15 including 6 wings and a pint! That’s not all the fun in store for you, on Wednesdays stop by for Trivia Night at 6 PM and give your brain a mental workout. Chairman's Corner

I am humbled and thankful for the strong leadership of the Vista Chamber of Commerce. Our dedicated team truly cares about making a positive impact on businesses and the community, and we are constantly striving to come up with innovative ideas for education, community involvement, and business success. Our Board of Directors is comprised of knowledgeable and passionate individuals who are always looking out for the best interest of our members. With their guidance, the Vista Chamber of Commerce has become a formidable force among the chambers in the region. We are proud to be a part of an organization that truly cares about the success and growth of our local businesses. In addition to our strong leadership, as a community, we have the privilege of living in the "Climatic Wonderland" with an average year-round temperature of 78 degrees! While other parts of the country may be experiencing all four seasons, we are spoiled to enjoy almost perfect conditions year-round. This not only allows us to go about our daily lives with ease, but it also means the perfect holiday weather. I moved from Northern California in 1999 and have watched exponential growth and development in and around Vista, but the holidays do stick out for me. My annual tradition is to smoke a whole turkey and a whole brisket for 18-24 hours for our family’s Thanksgiving feast. There's something special about being able to cook outside and appreci-

ate the beautiful weather while spending quality time with loved ones. This year will be even more special for us since our daughter will be visiting home from her first year at college. It will be a joy to see her growth and create new memories with our entire family together.

Zeke Corley

Chair of the Board

And let's not forget about the Christmas Parade in Vista. I’ve been in in the parade for the past 2 years, and I’ve never experienced anything like it. The day is always beautiful to ride on the Chamber float, surrounded by families and individuals who are all celebrating not just our town's history, but also its promising future. And as we celebrate, let us remember the amazing small businesses in Vista that offer unique and thoughtful gifts for our loved ones. Nothing beats supporting our local businesses and finding meaningful treasures at the same time. So if you happen to see me in your store, please don't hesitate to say hello. I must admit, coming from Northern California, I do miss the changing of seasons at times. But the warm sun and the warm people in Vista remind me why I am so proud to call this place my home. Let us continue to support and uplift each other, both personally and professionally, and make 2024 an even more prosperous year for our community. Wishing you all a happy and safe holiday season. Viva Vista! Zeke Corley Producer

By Elizabeth Bickford

If you are in the market for a customized culinary experience from a local caterer then James Stewart, the owner and head chef at Red Tail Catering is exactly who you need. Red Tail Catering provides a tailored menu for a full range of private events. Located in San Marcos, North County has been a popular service area for this catering group for the past 10 years!

12

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

James has accumulated over 36 years of food industry experience. After moving to San Diego in 1992 and continuing his passion for food he attended and graduated from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco in 1995. Through years of fine tuning his craft, James can curate any type of catered cuisine that your event requires. Basing his business model on a mix of weddings and corporate events, James has been able to keep his business thriving through the pandemic, something many struggled to do. Red Tail Catering is a preferred vendor of CSUSM, and a partner of the Vista Chamber of Commerce, working closely with both organizations to accommodate their needs. Red Tail catering is the caterer for the Vista Rising Star program. Once a month, the Vista Chamber of Commerce invites high school seniors to apply to the program, allowing the Chamber to honor the student’s achievements and commitment to excellence. James works with the Vista Chamber of Commerce to create a breakfast to best celebrate these young inspiring

community members. This program culminates in the selection of the Student of the Year. Partnering with a variety of organizations, Red Tail Catering is honored to work with the Viking Festival, an ever-expanding event in the Vista area. This year due to its popularity it was held at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum to accommodate the adoring crowd! This festival is hosted by Norway Hall, and James works with the group to provide the Valkyrie Feast, a delicious highlight of the event. The meal features Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes, a creamy brown gravy, and Lindenberry jelly! James recommends everyone checking it out as it is a unique and interesting way to taste new cuisine. Red Tail prepares their custom meals in a state-of-the-art and eco-friendly kitchen. Using hormone free meat, sustainable

seafood, and free-range poultry, James ensures the best quality products are delivered to your special event. With Red Tail’s busiest time being summer and early fall he recommends booking your private events and catering request as early as you can. This will ensure your date and menu choices can be best accommodated. With such a wide variety of cuisine, it is likely he will have a menu for your specific taste in mind. Consider looking at the catering website to review the multitude of menus Red Tail has available: RedTailCatering.com. On the website you can also request a quote or check if your preferred date is available. However, do not delay, and the dates are going fast. Booking with Red Tail Catering is an excellent way to support a locally owned and operated North County business. VISTACHAMBER.ORG

Mayor's Message Mayor John Franklin

Dear Vista Community,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as we approach the holiday season in our beloved Vista. As Mayor, it brings me immense joy to share the exciting events and opportunities that await our residents and visitors in the upcoming months. Vista is a place of vibrant community spirit, which is never more evident during the holiday season. One of our most cherished traditions is the Vista Christmas Parade, which will take place on December 2 this year. Our parade's theme, "Viva Vista!", celebrates all the wonderful aspects that make Vista a special place. This year's parade promises to be a spectacular display of creativity and community pride, and I encourage all our residents to come out and be part of this festive occasion. Additionally, I'm thrilled to announce the return of the free "Jingle Terrace Live" event at the Moonlight Amphitheatre. This event has become a highlight in our community, featuring incredible holiday visuals and a mesmerizing light show that will fill your heart with the joy of the season. It's an opportunity for families and friends to come together and create lasting memories. Visit moonlightstage.com for more information. As we prepare for this season of giving and celebration, I want to emphasize the importance of supporting our local businesses. Downtown Vista is a treasure trove of unique small businesses, each offering a distinct and wonderful shopping experience. Our local businesses have much to offer, from handcrafted gifts to exquisite boutiques and fantastic dining options. Every dollar spent at a local business in Vista directly supports jobs and bolsters our local economy. It fosters the growth of our community, ensuring that Vista remains a place where businesses thrive and residents prosper. I invite all our residents to mark their calendars for Small Business Saturday on November 25th. It's a day dedicated to celebrating and supporting the small businesses that make our community so special. This holiday season, let's not only celebrate the spirit of giving but also the spirit of our incredible Vista community. Together, we can make this season truly magical. I look forward to seeing you all at the Vista Christmas Parade and "Jingle Terrace Live," and I hope you'll join me in shopping locally to support our vibrant small business community. Wishing you all a warm and joyful holiday season! Sincerely,

John

hen COVID restrictions affected their business, Alohana Acai Bowls business owners, Pete McAfee and Robert O’Quinn grabbed their best weapon – a food truck – and drove their fresh fruit product to Marine Corp Base, Camp Pendleton. “We started working one day

a week on base and it caught on like wildfire,” says Pete. “The Marines loved us, and we loved them. They not only remained good customers but propelled our expansion into San Diego and South Orange Counties with four stores and multiple food trucks. We now serve Camp Pendleton seven days a week.” As career marketers in the action sports industry, Pete and Robert had a passion for healthy lifestyles. They both grew up skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, cycling and being active in the outdoor community – which led them to ask, “why not serve more nutritious food options at the sports trade shows we attend throughout the year?”

“If superfoods were like sports teams, the acaí berry would be the all-star quarterback of fruits."

The answer to that question (and solution to the problem), came about in 2016 with the purchase of a food truck to sell acai bowls (pronounced AH-sigh-YEE) at the Outdoor Retailer Sports Trade Show in Salt Lake City. “The response was overwhelming – and we committed to learning how to build the best acai bowl out there, focusing on healthy, superfood ingredients,” says, Pete. “The base for our acai bowl is a fruit sorbet made from the acai berry with toppings that you eat with a spoon," continues, Pete. “If superfoods were like sports teams, the acaí berry would—without question—be the allstar quarterback of fruits. It's delicious, abnormally attractive, and hugely popular,” says Real Simple Magazine food editors, Betty Gold and Lisa Milbrand. * “It's at this juncture of popularity that the Marines did us another favor,” says Pete. “They asked if we could create an acai bowl with a higher protein content. So, we took on the challenge and worked with Paola Richard, President and CEO of Gelato Love in Carlsbad. Together, we created a protein base that boasts 20 grams of protein, and a low sugar acai as well. It is one-third of the sugar added compared to our regular acai sweetened with allulose sugar. Both passed troop inspection and are standard fare on our menu.” The goodness of an acai bowl goes beyond its great taste. Alohana Acai Bowls in Vista is a popular place for families on the weekends, and the business community during the work week. “The brightness of our shop, and freshness of our bowls makes healthy eating fun and satisfying,” says Pete. “We have a calm surfer

vibe and are easy to find at 2205 S. Melrose, Suite 102, in Vista.” “That vibe extends into our catering. We have multiple food trucks to serve special events, employee appreciation fairs, sporting events and more. Large or small, we love to cater and bring the Aloha fun,” adds Robert. A special thanks to the Vista Chamber of Commerce for highlighting our business. We have been members since 2022.

Growing up in Minnesota, Will Sweasy reflects on many wonderful memories of him and his dad enjoying a hot tub in their backyard and the magical encounter of snow coming down while soaking. Where hot tubbing experience provided much fun, being raised and working in his family’s successful multigenerational shoe business shaped his values and fueled his knowledge of running a company entirely focused on customer service.

that dream, which recently brought the Sweasy family from Minnesota to California. Will said, “We are excited to help people convert their home into a spa home. Our mission is to help people heal.” The company proudly provides products and services far beyond just selling hot tubs. Will explained that their swim spas, a smaller version of a pool, have specially designed jets to keep the current flowing. This feature provides health benefits and enjoyment for the entire family. Imagine swimming and training with endless laps or boogieboarding right in your own backyard! Additionally, they offer a wide variety of massage chairs ranging anywhere from gaming size to full-length all equipped

When a past accident left Will living with pain, he embarked on a search for different therapies and treatments. As a result, he was also looking for a new business opportunity in the health & wellness industry that would allow him to help others feel better and get relief from pain. Purchasing Dimension One Spas of San Diego (soon to be Swim + Soothe) was the perfect match to fulfill

Event organizers selected long-time Chamber member and business owner Danny Villasenor of Peppertree Frosty as this year’s Grand Marshall. “I was moved to tears when they told me,” says Danny. “It’s such an honor for me and my entire family.” Danny says that it’s really his parents, Chuy and Velia who deserve the honor after working so hard since purchasing the business in 1959. “Unfortunately, my father has passed and mom is now 93, but I will definitely represent the family, which includes three sisters, nephews and nieces along with my sons and wife Linda who have all worked at Peppertree for decades,” he explains.

Another big personality that you’ll see at the tail-end of the parade riding atop an antique fire truck is Danny’s lifelong friend, JC Wynne, Vista’s official Santa Claus. JC has been carrying out this volunteer role for the Chamber for more than 20 years. With his authentic white beard and booming voice, JC inspires children young and old. He and his number one elf, his nine-year-old grandson Sawyer, do their best to keep the spirit of Santa alive and strong. “I love what I do and I’ll keep doing it as long as I’m having fun,” he says. JC continues, “Danny and I support each other in everything we do and part of that is giving back to the community. Earlier this year, when Danny won the Champions of Youth Awards from the Boys & Girls Club, I couldn’t be there, so I had a full-size photo of me at the event that read, ‘We love you, Danny!’ It was awesome!” JC says his philosophy is that a good society is judged on how well it takes care of its children and the elderly. Children

Did You Know? The parade was established in 1957 by the Chamber Parades were initial y held at night There is always a new theme each year An estimated 15,000 people attend A panel of three judges review floats and entries There wil be three different announcers along the route The VHS Jr. Air Force ROTC and the North SD Young Marines always make up the color guard and start the parade need love, guidance and direction and our seniors deserve respect and care,” he explains. JC is an honorary member of the Pride of Vista Lions Club. Along with his efforts with the parade, JC provides up to five certificates good for a “Personal Visit with Santa” each year to nonprofits like the Boys & Girls Club and Operation HOPE. They use them as raffle items at their annual fundraisers. The lucky winners get to have Santa come to their homes on Christmas Eve to hand out presents to their children. During Covid, JC also knew he had to do something special for the children of Vista so they knew Santa hadn’t forgotten them. A GoFundMe account raised $2K so JC could sit inside a giant snow globe in the parking lot of Peppertree Frosty. It was the perfect solution during the lockdown as kids could come by and wave or just talk to him safely through the plastic. It’s just another example of how Danny and JC show their ongoing love

Amigos de Vista Lions Club

Keeps on Giving By Julie Smith Taylor

Over the last 50+ years, members of the Amigos de Vista Lions Club have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support community programs and several local charities.

22

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

In April of

1970,

the organization was formed to help the sight impaired, local youth programs and the needy. Since then, the Amigos have expanded their reach to include a wide variety of organizations such as Operation HOPE, Center for the Blind, financial support to Vista students with vision issues, Meals with Love, Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, Vista American Little League, MVHS Basketball, Women’s Resource Center and Pathway Health Clinic, just to name a few. To support their efforts, the members put on six major events per year. Coming up next is the “9th Annual Novemberfest in the Gardens,” a craft beer, mead and wine festival at Brengle Terrace Park, Saturday November 18th from Noon to 4 p.m. The event also features live music, food from local restaurants, a variety of vendors, and a silent auction. Visit www.novemberfest. eventbrite.com to purchase tickets. Save $5 per person by purchasing in advance! “We are pleased that 100 percent of our proceeds are divided 50/50 between Alta Vista Gardens due to our long-standing partnership with them, and a variety of local charities we support,” says Jodi Blakley, chapter secretary. “This popular event creates a win-win because so many local businesses participate and also benefit from the exposure and product sales.” Other events this dynamic group of about 30 dedicated members host each year include the Annual Pancake Breakfast in March for Vista American Little League and MVHS Basketball. “We encourage the team members to assist and serve during the event so they get

Holloway, a board member and past president joined in 1986. “I’ve lived in Vista since 1978 and I just wanted to do something good for the community,” he says. “There is tremendous satisfaction in helping others and the Lion’s Club focuses on organizations that I really care about. I also am the President of the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens and have been a member since 1999. We started with nothing and now there’s a beautiful 14-acre garden for people to come and enjoy. The partnership between the Lion’s Club and the Gardens has made all the difference. It’s just another example of what is possible through long-term partnerships and community support,” he says.

“...we support so many local organizations and host high quality, important events that I know are directly and positively impacting our community.” a taste of what it’s like to raise money and help support their community,” says Blakley. The Amigos also support Vista’s Earth Day Celebration in April, host the Tim Black Charity Golf Event in May, and another golf tourney in Rancho Santa Margarita in September. In October they host a BBQ to support Alta Vista Botanical Gardens during their Fall Fun Festival. “We also ensure that children in Operation HOPE receive at least two of the items on their Christmas wish-lists,” says Blakley. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the looks on their faces when they open their gifts. Working with children is one of my favorite things about being a member of the Lion’s Club.” Blakley, a realtor with Coldwell Banker, is origi-

nally from a small town in Missouri. She has been involved with the Lion’s since moving here almost seven years ago. “My mother was very active in the community and I was raised to value the importance of giving back,” she explains. “The Lion’s Club is the perfect fit for me because we support so many local organizations and host high quality, important events that I know are directly and positively impacting our community.” Although Blakley is somewhat of a newbie in the club, most of the members have been active for decades. The Amigos de Vista are looking to expand their chapter. If you’re interested in supporting local charities and making a difference in our community, consider membership! Meetings are held the first and third Fridays of each month starting at 7 a.m. at Pegah’s Kitchen on South Santa Fe Road. It’s a great way to give back knowing what an impact you are making in people’s lives. the Vista Gem & Mineral Society When I recently interviewed Jessica Harmer, Vice President of the Vista Gem & Mineral Society (VGMS), she said, “We understand the allure of rocks. Our members love working with this medium for a variety of reasons. Some are avid rockhounds, some hobbyists, and others, professional artists, all who truly love the medium.” By Mary Ann Conover

“Thanks to those men and women, and our continued growth, we have the opportunity to share this most exciting form of art,” comments Jessica. “I’ve been an artist all my life and I enjoy the combination of art and science that gems and minerals provide.” And some are just in love. In love? “Yes,” adds Jessica. “We had a married couple who wanted to create their own wedding rings. We suggested precious metal clay and linked them to an instructor for a private lesson so they could do this together. Anyone who completes the basic course and becomes a member can practice their skills using our lapidary equipment under the guidance of the attending instructor.” Most of the membership comes from people attending classes. “We have been gearing up our classes since the pandemic shutdown. I teach on Sundays, but we also have classes several days during the week.” says, Jessica. “Classes are an integral part of who we are and our meetings with guest presenters will be starting back up at the beginning of the year. For example, if the presenter does inlay work (a small niche art) they demonstrate how it is done. Added to this are field trips such as going to Calico, California, an Old West mining town that originated in 1881 but was abandoned after silver lost its value. Members learn about rockhounding, or rock and mineral collecting. San Diego has many rockhounding opportunities where you can find tourmaline, lepidolite, and sunstone just to name a few.” According to rockseeker.com, “A rockhound is someone who cannot pass by a pretty rock without picking it up for a closer look. A rockhound is someone who can’t quite say no when it’s time to leave, because there’s just one more rock to be found.” That’s a great definition,” says Jessica. “In fact, the Vista Gem & Mineral Society was founded by a group of mostly retired Marines who met on a regular basis in the late 1950’s. When they discovered their shared interest in rockhounding, they contacted the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies and learned how to start their own chapter.”

The Vista Gem & Mineral Society is located at 1930 Watson Way, Suite B, in Vista. Since it is only open during class or shop times, people are asked to email info@vistarocks.org before stopping by. Or a visit can be scheduled in advance. Don’t forget to visit the online store where you can find your own treasures, including very affordable rock collections. “People love our boxes of rocks,” adds Jessica. “No two are the same.” Go to www.vistarocks.org. A special thanks to the Vista Chamber of Commerce for their amazing support of VGMS.

GHT Melds Supplements, Science, and Sales By Anne McDonnell

32

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

The GHT Companies manufacture and sell a wide range of nutritional supplements, probiotics, and vitamins. It’s an umbrella company for Global Health Trax, Vibrant Nutraceuticals, Health Specialties Manufacturing (HSM), and Vegan Life Nutrition, which each specialize in a certain aspect of the supplement business. HSM is based in Vista and is a private label nutritional supplement manufacturer. Says Shanna Denfeld, Vice President of Customer Service, supplement lines are produced for local, national, and global clients. The Vista location is a cGMP Certified, Sports Certified, Kosher Certified, Organic Certified, Gluten-Free Certified, and Health Canada Licensed facility. According to Denfeld, HSM has not failed a government, third-party, or customer audit in over 12 years, nor has it had a formal product recall during that time. The other GHT brands are sold under the Global Health Trax, Vibrant Nutraceuticals, and Vegan Life Nutrition labels. Says Denfeld, “We have global distribution channels working with over 70 wholesale distributors and via the direct-toconsumer markets. Many of the items are manufactured here in Vista.” HSM’s worldwide network includes clients and business partners in the U.K., Japan, Australia, and elsewhere. The Vegan Life Nutrition line has also expanded to a storefront on Amazon. A unique aspect of GHT is that it works directly with scientists to assist them in bringing their discoveries to the commercial market. The Vista location contains full in-house capabilities via facilities, scientists, and access to existing product lines; it specializes in cold-fill liquids and powder blends. HSM “delivers a clear path to take ingredients to market,” says Denfeld. “We take care of everything from concept to testing, and have assembled a team of scientists, production specialists, and customer service representatives who work alongside [scientists] to introduce new products.” Each new offering is customized, branded, and delivered. The Vista location contains the HSM facility, a warehouse for all of the company’s ingredients and inventory, offices, a

lab, and a shipping department. The company was started in 1996 and has been at the Vista location since the early 2000s. GHT has local vendors, including in Vista, and it supports the local community in a variety of ways. Says Denfeld, “In 2020 we partnered with Feeding San Diego and raised funds to produce over 125,000 meals for those in need throughout San Diego.”

GHT helps to translate scientific discovery into business enterprise. Says Denfeld, working with entrepreneurial scientists “allows us to be continually on the cutting edge of science and discovery in the nutraceutical industry.”

employee retention tax credit What is it? The Employee Retention Tax Credit program (ERTC) is a federal program created by Congress in the CARES Act which provides qualifying business owners tax refunds of up to $26,000 per W-2 employee. Most businesses, even essential businesses, qualify under the “Government Order” test, although there is also a “Gross Receipts” test.

Which Size of Businesses Can Qualify? Employers that had 500 or fewer full-time W-2 employees in 2019 can qualify for the 2021 tax credits. Employers that had 100 or fewer full-time W-2 employees in 2019 can qualify for both 2020 and 2021 tax credits. Employers with over 500 full-time W-2 employees in 2019 may be eligible for some limited credits.

How Do I Qualify? There are two tests for qualification purposes: The Gross Receipts test and the Government Orders test. The Gross Receipts test is met when the business suffered a decline in gross revenue of 50% in 2020 from the same quarter of 2019 and a decline of 20% in 2021 from the same quarter of 2019. The Government Orders test is met when a business suffered a full or partial suspension of its operations as a result of a “government” order (federal, state, local, or health department) limiting commerce, travel, or group meetings. Any disruption of the business operations due to a government order qualifies the business for tax credits, whether or not it was deemed an essential business. There is no revenue component to the Government Orders test.

How much Can I Receive? A qualifying business can receive up to $26,000 per employee; $5,000 for 2020 and $21,000 for 2021*. “Wages” include employer healthcare contributions. *2020: 50% of the first $10,000 in wages for each employee. *2021: 70% of the first $10,000 in wages for quarters 1, 2, and 3.
