Vista Chamber President & CEO Rachel Beld

Wrapping Up 2020 As we move into the holiday season, I want to share my sincere appreciation with you for your partnership and support of the Vista Chamber this year. This was a challenging year for so many Vista businesses and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve our community during this time. Over the last several months, our team and dedicated volunteers have made thousands of phone calls to our member businesses. And, we have fielded hundreds more inquiries from businesses needing connections to resources or information. We also aim to be a source for hiring information. We have the ability to promote member job listings and we can further share your listings with a video on social media. Please reach out if you need us. This is what we were born to do! As I write this, the election is just days away. While I don’t yet know the outcome, I am hopeful that our country and community can come together to support and lift each other up. The New Year approaches and I am optimistic that 2021 will bring new opportunities and growth for resilient Vista companies and our community. There is a lot of activity in Downtown. The work on S. Santa Fe will wrap soon and new developments are underway for the corridor. Construction on the Rylan is nearly complete and residents and businesses are moving in. In addition, there is interest in several high-profile locations downtown which are currently vacant.

5

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

Hopefully, we will hear some news about those spots, soon! The addition of outdoor seating on sidewalks and in parking spaces has created a positive energy. And, so many new cute shops are opening up adding to the already fun and eclectic inventory that makes our Downtown so special and unique. There is excitement growing in other areas of Vista, too. North County Square has several new tenants lined up, including the Burlington which is relocating from its South Vista location. And, the recent announcement of Cue Health moving to Vista to focus on production of rapid COVID tests is very encouraging, as are the 500 jobs that the company will bring to the region! Please make time to read about the amazing companies we’ve featured this issue. I know you will be proud of the variety of products, services, and experi-

ences that our Vista companies bring to the world! Overall, the future is bright for Vista and we will recover from this pandemic and the economic impacts. I invite you to join us at the Vista Chamber as a member and as a volunteer on one of our many committees. The work we do now will help to shape the economic vitality of the community for years to come. On a final note, the Vista Chamber is proud to once again bring fun and celebration to Vista with our 63rd Annual Christmas Parade. Please join us on December 5 from 1-3pm in the Cinepolis parking lot for a drive-thru parade. We’ll have music, fun, and a few surprises! We can’t wait to see you there!

Full Metal Burgers (FMB) owner Ben Burley always enjoyed cooking but had never considered doing it professionally. You could have called him a weekend warrior, always trying to create the perfect burger on his backyard grill. He entered the commercial burger world in 2017 with one foot in the water. When the business started really taking off, he jumped in headfirst, trading his full-time desk job in for one in the world of food service. FMB hit their high-point when they received the Vista Small Business of

Oceanside and have been serving seven days a week ever since. They are currently available for catering delivery but not onsite preparation due to COVID and their commitment at Black Plague. Operating FMB is definitely the toughest thing Ben has ever undertaken and he will admit that he has never it is without the help he received from friends and family in the early days, the strong support of the community, and the dedication of the incredibly talented team of seven that they have grown to be today. Ben has been told by lots of customers that their burger is the best out there, and compliments like this provide the validation and motivation that he needs to keep moving forward with his operation.

the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce in February of 2020. Their low-point came a mere two weeks later when they were forced to shut down for just under three months due to COVID and its restrictions. The world had unquestionably changed and Ben realized that the business he had worked so hard to create may no longer be viable. Their business model was set up around large social gatherings and events and that went up in smoke in what felt like an instant. Fortunately, they were able to reimagine the concept and have enjoyed newfound success with a partner brewery, Black Plague Brewing (BPB). They reopened on June 12th at BPB in

worked so hard in his life. He was not fully prepared for the reality of going from the traditional workforce to being self-employed, and the daily challenges that go with. As a business owner, work/life balance is difficult to maintain and it is difficult to find good, quality time to spend with his wife as often as he would like. However, he truly loves working for himself. He enjoys the multitasking, critical thinking, and working through the different challenges of owning his own business. The stress is high, but happily the reward is even greater. While he has put in much sweat equity personally, Ben is quick to admit that FMB would not be where

Their menu staple is the 'South of Heaven', a double-patty, spicy burger that is sure to bring a sweat to your brow! On Sundays only, they offer a special called the 'Napalm in the Morning' which consists of a burger topped with a fried egg, everything but the bagel seasoning, Hatch Chile salsa, and sliced avocado with bacon and grilled onions. If spicy is not what you're looking for, they offer other savory specialty burgers along with pulled chicken nachos, a vegetarian-friendly black bean patty, and the lighter 'Appetizers for Destruction' menu. Full Metal Burger’s goals for the future are pretty simple. They want to open a brick and mortar location in downtown Vista. They are currently looking for opportunities and investors to make that happen and anyone interested in help-

ing turn that dream into a reality should consider this an open invitation. You can find Full Metal Burgers seven days a week at Black Plague Brewing at 2550 Jason Court in Oceanside.

winds down, I can’t help but think about my how challenging this year

has been for so many. As a result of the pandemic and the subsequent economic shutdown, our local businesses have struggled and I am sorry to say that we have lost a few. As a business owner, I am immensely grateful for the support of our community. Knowing that Vistans love and support us means so very much. Please continue to shop locally and spend your dollars in Vista this holiday season and beyond. I am proud of the work the Vista Chamber has done during this time to promote our member businesses. If you are not yet following the Chamber’s social media pages, please do! In addition to learning about resources shared by the Chamber, you will enjoy some fun videos about our local businesses, maybe you’ll learn about a few you did not even know. And, please make sure to visit www.VistaisOpen.com and purchase a VistaBucks gift card. The $25 card costs only $20 and is good at a number of Vista businesses. This extra boost will be good for businesses and good for you. Things have been hard this year. But, the New Year will soon be here and with it a renewed hope for better days ahead. All that we have experienced and the lessons learned will inform our personal and businesses decisions. I am confident that the Vista Community will come out the other side of the pandemic stronger than ever before.

at re find off main street •

By Barb Miltenberger

re•find off main street (re•find) is tucked into a corner of downtown, historic Vista, behind Peppertree Frosty and next to the new Film Hub. Proprietor Riley Herington opened the business in 2019, the year after she completed her Masters in professional communication at CSUF. You could say stepping into a role like this was in her blood. She has fond memories of her mom owning a shop with a similar concept in Georgia when she was young. She and her mom sold online throughout her college and graduate school years. It was a big step up to go from selling over the internet to opening a brick and mortar business, but it has been a satisfying challenge. In the last 17 months that re•find has been open, it has thrived while its concept has naturally evolved. Riley has stocked her welcoming store with largely vintage, hand-selected and collected pieces from all over the country. She and her parents often take airplane treks across the map, returning with a U-Haul loaded with goodies picked up along the route home. Treasure hunting is her favorite part of the business. It’s on these trips that they are

able to acquire exquisitely unique pieces that you won’t find in other shops. There is a free-spirited vibe in the store that sets it apart, and it is a sanctuary for those who love to re-use, re-love and repurpose. Whether you are looking for statement clothing pieces or eyecatching goods for your home, re•find is your place. The building that houses re•find’s treasures is itself no exception to the vintage theme. It was built in the 1950’s and originally served as the local Greyhound bus station. Riley and her family worked for months prior to opening to make the aged building come to life again. They added some tasteful updates while preserving the integrity and the history of the original construction. They also undertook a huge project in the “yard” to the rear and side of the building. They have turned this spot into a place to host private events and it is where they hold their monthly market

days, where outside vendors from the community are invited to sell their handmade and curated goods. The market is generally held the second Saturday of each month from 11AM to 3PM. Riley enjoys this opportunity to give back to the community and to let others display their works.

Riley grew up in Vista and this city is close to her heart. After going away to UC Davis to earn her degree and then CSU Fullerton for her Masters, she returned to Vista because it was and is her goal to invest into her community and build her business in her home town. Her vision for re•find is for it to continue to evolve and grow in an organic way. She has greatly appreciated the support of those who travel both near and far to visit the store, many of whom have become fast friends. Please make it a point to stop in soon and find something special that just might have an interesting story attached. You can find re•find off main street at 146 Eucalyptus Ave. in Vista 92084 Phone: 760-659-6787 Please give their Facebook page a like at @ re•find off main street and Instagram at @re•findoffmain.

The NCAAWA Women Supporting Women for 25 Years By Julie Smith Taylor

The North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA) was established in 1995 by a group of 11 women armed with a small grant of $1,000 eager to mentor and support African-American women re-entering the workforce. Their primary focus was to support women residing in North County San Diego, including Oceanside, Fallbrook and Vista and as far east as Escondido and south to Encinitas. Over the past 25 years, this group of women has evolved into a non-profit 501[c]3 volunteer organization consisting of more than 100 women of all races and cultures and with different professional backgrounds who support each other as they strive to empower, inspire and engage women and girls of all ages.

“As our organization grew

we shifted our focus to students as they prepare for college and identify their career paths,” says Raye Clendening, president and one of the founding members of the NCAAWA. “Our programs envision diversity at every level. It’s a kaleidoscope of women working for and with each other. We now provide mentoring programs to area middle school and high school students and offer educational scholarships,” she says. Scholarships are geared toward academic or trade school advancement. “In total, we have granted over $270K in scholarships to more than 200 young women,” explains Clendening. “Each recipient receives a minimum of $500 that can be reapplied for as long as they are meeting the minimum requirements.” Along with scholarships for women in higher education, Clendening says the association developed the “Becoming a Global Citizen” Program in 2014 to provide ongoing mentoring and workshop training for middle schoolaged girls over two, 10-week sessions throughout the academic year. Students meet for 90 minutes right after school to attend workshops, receive training, and experience volunteer guest speakers on topics such as leadership, communication, proper etiquette, empowerment, health and wellness, and more. There have been up to 20 girls participating in each session. “Parents are incredibly grateful for our program and the leadership skills their daughters are learning,” says Clendening. In 2020, workshops and mentoring were moved online due to Covid-19 limitations. The association is also developing a video series on eight essential leadership skills that will feature young women participating in the program.

13

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

This series will be used as a supplemental fundraising tools for the scholarship program as many of its major fundraising and recruitment events were cancelled in response to the pandemic. The association’s much anticipated Biennial Women’s Conference scheduled in March was cancelled, along with their signature “Very Berry Parfait” booth in Vista’s annual Strawberry Festival back in May. Its annual gala, the Gentleman’s Gourmet, held every October, attracts close to 400 people. The event typically raises approximately $30K for scholar-

ships and programming and will be the biggest loss in revenue of them all. Despite the setbacks, Clendening maintains a positive attitude. “People are simply amazing,” she says. “We just received a donation of $5K from an individual because she believes in us and trusts us to spend the money wisely. We have example after example of people reaching out to us this year because they really care about our cause and want us to succeed.” The NCAAWA also benefits from corporate sponsorships big and small that include, but is not limited to, Watkins

Wellness Corporation in Vista, the Vista Community Clinic, Wells Fargo, Tri-City Medical Center, Scripps and NEATT. “With the generous help from local corporations and supporters, we are able to pursue our goal in 20201 ??? to invest in strategic planning,” says Clendening. “It is important for us to increase our ability to expand our reach in North County.” To learn more about membership, monthly meeting times and how to support this wonderful organization, visit: www.ncaawa.org

During the mandated COVID-related shut downs, Regina utilized the time to seek clarity and to revise her vision for her salon. She and her partner created a retail space within the salon, added custom hand-built shelving, and searched out products that connected with her brand and image. You can find specialty t-shirts, necklaces and even punk rock hand sanitizer at Hellbent. In addition, another local women-owned business, I’m With the Band, connected with Regina to sell upscale hair accessories. Because, salon operations were prohibited at the time, but retails sales were allowed, Regina would open the salon for retail once a week or meet people by appointment so they shop the various hair products and accessories. She relied heavily on the support of the other six independent stylists at Hellbent, “I am so grateful to have the best team

And, these other stylists supported Hellbent with retail and product purchases. Rock on! Now, the salon has been open one full year and Regina is excited about what the future will bring. And, she is focused on supporting and collaborating with her downtown Vista neighbors. “I am so grateful for the owners of Mikko Sushi and Seven. Helping Businesses Survive the Pandemic Despite being in the midst of a global pandemic, Vista businesses still have plenty of things for everyone to taste, see and experience. COVID-19 has created a shift in our economy and our business structure; yet Vista is rising to the challenge, and I am proud of our collective response to the coronavirus crisis. As we move into the holiday months, let’s “keep it local to strengthen our community and stimulate our hometown economy. If possible, shop in Vista for business and personal needs by buying from local grocery stores, hardware stores, downtown boutiques, and other establishments. Support our many restaurants by dining-in or ordering take-out/delivery services to keep these eateries in business and workers employed. The City is steadfast in its support of the business community, particularly our smaller businesses. One approach we are using is the Vista is Open program which provides local merchants with an exclusive online platform, free of charge, to market their services and products to customers. The goal is to help small businesses promote themselves and direct traffic to their storefront, so they are able to remain in business. To learn more about this program and other business resources, visit www.VistaisOpen.com. Local businesses are the backbone of our community and we will continue to rise to the challenge in helping them survive and thrive!

Star Fox Media Brings Big City Media & Marketing Services To Vista

Star Fox Media was officially founded out of The Film Hub in Vista, CA on January 1st, 2020 by Jeff Fox, but has a history going back almost a decade prior. Jeff received his bachelor’s in business administration with a focus on marketing strategy from the University of San Diego and completed a few marketing internships during his tenure. One of his internships was with Studio 2055 (now Comet Creative), who had clients such as 20th Century Fox, The California Center for the Arts, The Four Seasons, The Gemological Institute of America, Reebok, and TaylorMade. The leadership team at Studio 2055 put a huge emphasis on learning. They would allocate a couple of hours each day to reading up on current marketing trends and changes, which would turn into written summaries not only for their own website, but also to be passed on to the team internally. From there, Jeff moved on to Princebury Productions & Media, a film production company that focused on the business side of the film industry. Jeff got to apply his marketing skills not only to the company itself, but also to the individual films it produced. During this process, he decided to learn more about the creative side of the industry, in order to better assist with projects. He took additional coursework from Palomar College in the Graphic Communications department, culminating in him being tasked with getting some of the pickup shots for a few documentaries. Because of the cyclical nature of the film industry, with really busy periods during the development and pre-production phases of film, to then slower periods in between, Jeff started doing marketing work for small, local businesses when things slowed down. He would create small websites, do search engine optimization, shoot videos, manage social media accounts, and do other marketing consulting work. Jeff decided to spin off a creative wing for Princebury once his partner, Christopher Williams, decided to move out of the state. This creative wing focused on using his marketing strategy and analytical skills, combined with his newly developed talent for storytelling, to help small businesses find affordable and creative ways to build their brand and grow their companies. This was made possible because of an old friend from his time at Palomar College, Carlos Hernandez, who was also looking for something new in the marketing field. Carlos had been handling the marketing for a large garage door repair and installation company and was looking to apply his knowledge to other industries. The final piece came together out of the Film Hub, from partnering with Celia Young of Designed Images and Shaun Frederickson of Firm Grip Photography. Celia liked the idea of being able to focus on her design skills while expanding her services to better help and accommodate her clients. She is an extremely talented designer with lots of experience doing all kinds of design and marketing services for every type of industry. Shaun was looking to move from wedding photography and videography to more corporate and commercial-style videos. His media breathes life into the content they create, and opens the door to new avenues to reach your audience. With a full team assembled, Star Fox Media is now able to offer a range of marketing and video production services, with specialists in each area, allowing lower prices than hiring one full-time marketing manager. Some of these services include marketing strategy, branding, web design, social media management, blogging and SEO, email marketing, advertising, graphic design, video production, product photography, podcast production, drone photography, and much more.

Students Achieve Math Fitness at Your Local Mathnasium By Julie Smith Taylor

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

Like any sport, dance or activity, once you know the fundamentals, making a long-term commitment to practice is key to success. That’s how people win championships, gold medals and earn full-ride scholarships. And, that’s exactly what Kris Thomson, Center Director at Vista’s Mathnasium Center will tell any parent who is eager to see their child’s math skills improve—it’s practice, practice, practice! “We identify a child’s strengths and weaknesses during our risk-free initial assessment,” says Thomson. “From there, we build a customized program that will get them on the path to math confidence and long-term success.” The program is set up as a monthly membership plan, similar to a gym membership, and he recommends at least one hour, 2-3 days a week for a full semester to see solid results and problems resolved. “If they commit to less than that, kids often have to relearn the math and progress is slow,” he says. “We also want to avoid cramming or overdoing it, because math concepts need to sink in long-term.” Thomson, whose college studies included math, physics and accounting, and who has always been a math lover, explains how it all works, “We find that kids struggle in higher levels of math because they usually have a deficiency in the basics,” he says. “If you haven’t mastered the basics and don’t know any of the shortcuts that make things easier, it slows you down, erodes your confidence, and that’s when students get frustrated and discouraged. Private tutors are often unsuccessful as well, because kids simply don’t even know what to ask, or where the problem lies.” The Mathnasium philosophy believes in asking Socratic questions, or openended prodding questions, so the kids

23

VISTACHAMBER.ORG

understand what they are doing and why. Instead of teaching concepts directly, as is typical in a regular classroom, these questions are posed to help the students discover the answers on their own. In a typical hour-long session, an instructor will work on three math subtopics, called prescriptives, based on the student’s custom program. The instructor provides guidance and support so the child can learn and work independently. There is never homework assigned, however, a portion of every Mathnasium hour goes to helping students with their existing homework and classwork. The instructors will help students understand the relevant concepts that enable the students to complete the homework themselves. “It is this homework help and our customized program that allows our students’ confidence in math to soar,” says Thomson. “All of our assignments are just beyond what they already know, so they can feel a sense of confidence and accomplishment as they move forward. This approach makes each step feel easy vs. feeling like it’s a difficult one.” As they finish each prescriptive, students can visit the Rewards Cabinet for little toys, gift cards, etc. as further motivation. Thomson says that his goal is to see students eventually begin to enjoy math and not look at it with fear or contempt. “We don’t want math woes to hold anyone back in making future life choices or pursuing any career paths,” he says. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, the Center can serve up to 12 kids at one time to ensure proper distancing in a space that could easily accommodate 50 students. Thomson has two HEPA filters in place, takes temperatures of everyone before entering the building,

We don’t want math woes to hold anyone back in making future life choices or pursuing any career paths...

and disinfects each work space between use. Parents are also no longer allowed to wait in the waiting room for precautionary reasons.

Thomson and his wife opened their Mathnasium Center back in November, 2019 in Vista Village on Main St. next to the Clay & Latte and Swami’s restaurant. They have been proud members of the Vista Chamber since 2018. To learn more, visit www.mathnasium.com/vista

Coromega No Fish Burps! Taste the difference! By Lucia Viti

Omega 3 never tasted so yummy! Coromega’s extensive line of omega 3 products, proudly manufactured in Vista, parallel their efficacy with a flavorful tag line, “no fish burps!” Coromega offers an extensive line of omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, elements essential to human health. Touting products for the entire family, Coromega’s single servings gel shots supply omega 3’s EPA and DHA in a natural triglyceride form. The emulsified formula is noted to absorb within the body three times faster than the large – hard to swallow – softgel capsules.

“And we continued to make great strides on the original recipe that included formulating healthy fats with tasty ingredients,” said Cogan. “We use only the highest quality, molecularly distilled, ultra-refined omega 3 fish oil. Consumers can trust that Coromega is committed to using superior ingredients to produce the highest quality product on the market.”

“Our new Coromega Max line offers Citrus Burst and Coconut Bliss flavors,” said Milo Cogan, Coromega’s President and CEO. “Each serving delivers the delicious omega 3 nutrition equal to a half-pound of salmon!”

Coromega’s oil is sourced from the cold, deep waters of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America. Once extracted, the crude fish oil is transported to a Norwegian refinery where it is trans-

Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are described as good fats critical for human health. Research shows that Omega 3 supplements benefit the heart, cardiovascular, and nervous systems; enhance joint and muscle mobility; and improve brain and sight function. Studies also suggest that omega-3 fatty acids lower triglycerides in the blood. Coromega’s patented formula dates back to a Norwegian scientist known as “Grandpa Johan.” Determined to have his beloved granddaughter, Monica, include fish oil in her diet, he developed an emulsion technique that successfully blended the oil into an orange-flavored pudding that lacked a fish smell, a fishy aftertaste, and the all too common, post consumption, fish burps.

formed into a clear, tasteless, odor-free liquid. Purification continues through a process of molecular distillation. Unwanted levels of carcinogenic and environmental contaminants including PCBs, Dioxins, Dioxin-like PCBs, Furans and the heavy metals of Lead, Cadmium, Mercury and Arsenic, are removed. The raw materials are sent to Vista for manufacturing, packaging, warehousing and distribution to retail, ecommerce and website consumers. Consumers include many independent and chain vitamin, natural grocery and health food stores, as well as Amazon, iHerb and Coromega. com.” “Everything is done in our beautiful Vista facility,” continued Cogan. “Coromega cares deeply about Vista and our connection to the community as our Vista team shares our interest in improving human health and delivering the highest quality supplements to our loyal customers.” Sporting a 20-year tenure in sunny Vista Coromega’s

manufacturing facility is certified under the tenant of a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). “Our products are consistently produced and controlled according to rigorous quality standards,” continued Cogan. “Our Vista facility is designed to minimize the risks involved in nutritional supplement production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product. Good Manufacturing Practices covers production, warehousing materials, and equipment, as well as the care of our premises. We train our staff in personal hygiene, an important aspect for the battle against Co-vid 19. “In addition,” added Cogan, “our facility is certified by NSF International, the leading third-party health and safety certification organization.” “At Coromega, we believe that everyone can benefit from omega-3 fatty acids,” concluded Cogan. “We advise everyone to check with their doctor for any questions or concerns about whether omega-3 supplements are right for you!” www.coromega.com

Superintendent's Corner Matt Doyle, Ed.D.

All school districts in San Diego County are working hard to meet the needs of students and their families during this challenging time. One area of support we have recently created is the Vista Institute for Parents. Our Family And Community Engagement Network of parent liaisons worked with teachers and administrators to develop this new support system for parent to assist them in playing a key role in our school year launch in a virtual learning environment. The vision of the Vista Institute for Parents is to create a system of support to engage and empower families as partners in education by:

n

Facilitating access to academic supports

n

Prioritizing care and connection

n

Building technology literacy

n

Helping families effectively navigate the education system

We have created a VIP webpage to provide brief how-to videos, quick reference documents, tools, and supports so that we may realize this vision. We have also created a “Contact Us link so that you may connect with a community liaison to ask questions and get individual support. We will be continuously adding to this website as the school year progresses in response to feedback from parents. We believe that parents are the most influential teacher in the education of their children. We are committed to expanding our partnership with you to amplify and elevate the academic and social/emotional achievement for all students. Award Winning Healthcare in our Community Tri-City’s mission is to advance the health and wellness of the community we serve. For nearly 60 years we’ve shown our commitment to fulfill that mission. The caring hands and skilled care of our dedicated nurses, doctors and clinicians have been recognized at the highest levels. We’re proud to have earned these recent honors: Heart & Stroke Care Leader in North County Tri-City is home to one of the top Heart and Stroke treatment programs anywhere. The American Heart Association recently awarded FIVE Gold Awards for our heart and stroke programs—making us the Gold Standard in the care of some of our community’s most critically ill patients.

CBAD Award - Community Impact We are extremely proud to receive the Community Impact – Large Company CBAD Award recognizing Tri-City Medical Center’s community outreach efforts and in-kind support for community organizations to “move the needle” on community health issues and address social determinants of health.

Best Maternity Care Tri-City was recognized by Newsweek and Leapfrog as one of the “Best Maternity Hospitals 2020”. This award is granted to hospitals that meet Leapfrog’s rigorous standards for excellence in maternity care – including low rates of C-section, episiotomy, early elective delivery and following important protocols to protect moms and babies, among other measures. Tri-City has also gone more than TEN YEARS without a PICC line infection in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a major milestone.
