Chamber of CommerCe

For a full century the Vista Chamber of Commerce has positively impacted the Vista community. Launched on June 6, 1923, the Vista Chamber of Commerce was formed by a group of eighteen engaged citizens who all agreed to become members. Now, our growing membership represents nearly 600 businesses and tens of thousands of employees.

Because this is our centennial year, I’ve spent some time researching the Chamber’s history and I thought it would be fun to share some highlights of the Chamber’s impact over the years.

When the Vista Chamber board hosted their first board meeting on June 13, 1923, the group agreed that the first order of business was to create a slogan contest to brand the community. Later that summer, mr. ea marsh won $20 for offering the winning slogan of Viva Vista! Since then, the Chamber has been instrumental in defining and/ or amplifying the identity of Vista. other Vista themes over the years have included Climatic Wonderland, Strawberry Capitol, Vista made, and Vista beer. In addition, the Chamber launched the Vista magazine in 2007 aimed to celebrate all things Vista – business, community, and education.

Since its early days, the Vista Chamber has worked to build consensus for infrastructure and community services. for example, in october of 1924, the Chamber hosted a party to celebrate the successful bond election which established the Vista Irrigation District. according to the Vista historical Society, the party included dancing, a band concert, and a moving picture show! In the early 1960’s the Vista Chamber established a committee to begin a study of the area’s facilities with the idea of incorporating the community into a City. The City was then incorporated in 1963! also, around that time, the Chamber advocated for $2.5m in flood control channels throughout Vista and hosted a ground-breaking complete with a “Golden Shovel.” The ground was broken along buena Vista Creek behind the then Post office which is now the film hub and Chamber office! In recent years the Chamber supported Prop L, a half-cent sales tax measure that funded a new Civic Center, moonlight Stage, a new fire station, and the Vista Sports Park.

In 1981, the City Council unanimously approved a specific plan for 672 acres for the South Vista Industrial Park. Vista

Chamber of Commerce advocated for the approval saying, “The development would provide more than 13,000 jobs for the area and would allow the students graduating out of our high schools and junior colleges to find jobs rather than move out of the community.” Today the Vista business Park represents approximately 900 companies and 21,000 jobs. The Chamber has also been a key player in advocating for downtown Vista, including Vista Village and Paseo Santa fe. This includes working with officials to evaluate and amend business regulations that are a barrier to business success.

The Vista Chamber of Commerce has always worked closely with school officials and was instrumental in the creation of the original Lincoln School, advocating for the bond measure to fund the project. Now, Vista Unified represents 19,000 students at more than 30 schools. The Chamber works closely with VUSD and local charter and private schools on several education-related programs. our business members need talent, and that pipeline exists, right here with Vista students! The Chamber’s partnership includes anything from advocacy and awareness about school issues/topics to actual programs like the rising Star Student of the month and the Velocity Internship Program.

The Chamber is focused on supporting businesses, everything we do centers on this goal. as we look to the next 100 years of impact, we continue to evaluate and expand our business resources, educational opportunities, and access to talent pipelines. We invite you to join us for the next 100 years and beyond! Learn more at vistachamber.org Rachel

On March 10, 2023 the Vista Chamber of Commerce with the Vista Education Foundation held its 12th Annual Heroes of Vista Gala at The Vistonian. This event celebrates our local heroes in education, business, public service and more. More than 200 attendees joined us to honor those that have made a positive impact in our City. CoLab Public House

A Vibrant Meeting Space

This unique location offers something for the entire family. CoLab opened in July of 2022 to a welcoming community reception. It was their goal to create a collaborative space allowing for breweries, wineries, and food to exist under one roof. The public house offers a great meeting place for families, businesses, and community groups.

As soon as you enter the vibrant space you can feel the exciting energy of the public house. With so many great options it’s a good idea to take a quick stroll around the room to take it all in. CoLab is the home to Laguna Beer Company, Barrel and Stave Brewing, and Breakwater Brewery, all offering prize winning brews in one location. Vista seemed like the perfect location for a collaborative public house. With so many wonderful breweries throughout the city it is definitely a treat to have three such brands all in one place.

With the welcome edition of Propaganda Wines, you can find a lovely marriage of exquisite brands through this collabora-

tion. Offering food to round out the experience, Baby’s Badass Burgers has a variety of menu items from their wellknown food trucks and an expanded menu for the CoLab location. In addition to their specialty burgers, they have appetizers, pizza, and a kid’s menu.

On top of the great sips and delicious bites, guests will find ample space, free parking, and activities to keep everyone entertained. CoLab has four large screen TVs, so guests can expect to find coverage of their favorite sporting event. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the many arcade games. They have a variety of ride-on games, claw machines, and pinball!

CoLab is focused on offering a full rotation of fun activities throughout the month. Here you can find free bingo and trivia nights weekly. Live music is available on Fridays, check their website (colabpublichouse.com) for the full rotation of musical guests. New to CoLab, Karaoke will take place the

first Thursday night of the month. They can’t wait to invite guests to share their musical talents! During the weekend they offer brunch, featuring mimosas and breakfast items. Brunch has become a popular event for regulars. Follow their Instagram @colabpublichouse to learn more about their special events and offers.

CoLab is looking forward to hosting private events and functions for the community. They will host the Vista Chamber of Commerce Holiday Business Mixer in December. Their ample space and quick service will make for a pleasant and effective event. CoLab is committed to align with local nonprofits and charities to help support their causes. Once a month, they hope to work with a new nonprofit in order to assist with fundraising and awareness. If you would like to work with CoLab please reach out to Joe@colabpublichouse.com.

Chairman's Corner

I am ready for Summer!

Have you had enough of the rain and wet weather yet? I certainly have. Of course, as a native Californian, I know that we are all obligated to say things like “but we’ve really needed it” anytime someone complains about too much rain. Don't get me wrong, the rain has been great, but I am ready for summer.

Bring on the vacations, trips to the beach, and finding fun things to do with the kids while they are out of school. I am looking forward to warm (not rainy) weather, longer days, and walking around in shorts and flip-flops. Even though, according to the calendar, the official start of summer isn't until June 21st if you live in and around Vista California the real start to summer is marked by the annual Vista Strawberry Festival.

A Memorial Day weekend event, since 2009 the Vista Strawberry Festival has taken place almost every year on the Sunday right before Memorial Day (we took a small break for COVID). Local vendors line the streets of historic downtown Vista and festival-goers can enjoy shopping, entertainment, or casually walking around the crowd. There are music and event stages, a beer garden for the adults, a Kid Zone for the kids, and a variety of contests for the whole family. Dress the kids up like a strawberry, hold a beer stein, or if you're afraid you might overindulge in the strawberry pie eating contest, then start the day off with a 5k run.

Whatever you're into, the Vista Strawberry Festival is where you need to be to get your summer started right. Check out the local businesses, arts and crafts, specialty foods, and a variety of booths. Clothes, jewelry, knick-knacks, you name it, with over 450 vendors there is definitely something for everybody.

The Vista Chamber of Commerce is proud to host this event, but we couldn't do it without the City of Vista, the support of our sponsors and vendors, and of course, you! Interested in being a vendor or volunteer? Signing up for the Strawberry run? Curious where to park? Check out vistastrawberryfest. com for all the details.

So if you are ready to kick off the summer with me, then come join me for a berry good time on Sunday, May 28th in beautiful downtown Vista for the 12th annual Vista Strawberry Festival.

The Party Doesn't Start Until The Balloons Arrive!

14 VISTACHAMBER.ORG

since Debbie Medrano decided that it was time to open up a balloon decorating business in Vista. It was a natural transition as for many years, Debbie helped her parents with their balloon shop in Alta Loma, where she gained a valuable insight into the industry. Around the same time, her career in mortgage lending started to wind down and her children grew out of weekend sports. She knew the moment was just right to put her skills and knowledge into action and launch San Diego Balloons and More. Initially, her business was a part-time venture while she worked for an insurance agency. However, within seven years, her company expanded to a point where it could fully support her. Debbie said, “I pivoted from a hobby business to full-time. Since then, my business has doubled and tripled every year.”

San Diego Balloons and More is one of the top companies in their category, well-equipped to handle even the largest of parties, corporate events, grand openings, graduations, trade shows, and other special occasions. Debbie, her

husband, and a team of employees are fully committed to offering their clients the best possible service in the balloon decorating business. It is their high level of expertise and superior reputation that keep their customers coming back and referrals fueling their growth. Delivering balloon bouquets seven days a week, they are the number one provider in San Diego. Whether it’s a fifty-dollar balloon bouquet or an eight-thousand-dollar Christmas party decorating extravaganza, Debbie and her team are ready to turn any celebration into a memorable one.

Debbie explained that their business delivers magic, anticipation, and excitement. “We transform a room. Parties don’t look like parties without balloons. People know that something fun is going to happen if there are balloons.”

Debbie’s favorite part about their work is bringing joy to people. Besides delivering happiness, their efficiency makes

them stand out from the competition. She said, “We bring everything inflated and set it up in less than an hour, depending on how big the job is. We know how to get in and out and get it done!” As a balloon artist, her creations are so much more than just a balloon on a string. From giant arches, columns, and centerpieces to special shapes of toothbrushes, DNA, or walking balloon costumes, they do it all! Whether they create elegant clear balloons wrapped with lights or an eyecatching display of colors, their decorating style fits any theme and occasion. Belonging to a network of balloon artists, Debbie is continually expanding her craft portfolio, which allows the company to provide innovative and exciting designs.

As a proud Vista resident and entrepreneur, Debbie has always given back to the local community. She is the founder of Vista Teen Outreach—an organiza

tion fighting against student hunger. Over the years, she helped plan the Taste of Vista and continues to be the event planner for the Vista Rod Run along with many other North County events. Recently, San Diego Balloons and More was nominated for “The Best of North County” contest in the customer service category.

With graduations around the corner, Debbie and her team are getting ready for a busy decorating season. Thinking about making your graduation party or next special event unforgettable? San Diego Balloons and More can make it happen! Call them at 760-390-2932, check them out on Instagram & Facebook, or visit:

John Franklin Mayor's Message

Mayor

If you’re like me, you look forward to summer’s arrival every year because it’s an incredible time of year in Vista. It’s when our City comes alive, starting with the Strawberry Festival on Memorial Day weekend to the final curtain of summer at the Moonlight Amphitheatre at the end of September. There’s so much to experience in Vista. I hope you take advantage of our City’s incredible amenities and special events that fill the calendar. The City of Vista’s two popular summer destinations, the Moonlight Amphitheatre and the Wave Waterpark will be in full swing this year. I’m so proud that entire generations of Vistans have grown up and attended the Wave and the Moonlight. Where else can families enjoy a fantastic aquatic experience under the Vista sun during the day and then take in a professional Broadway musical under the stars in the evening? Only in Vista!

The Moonlight is host to Moonlight Summer Jam, an annual series of concerts in June and July. This year’s Summer Jam lineup is incredibly exciting, and I’m looking forward to seeing Vistans rock their summer.

Vista’s summer is also made for camps for our youngsters. The City operates three camp programs: Day Camps at Brengle Terrace Park from June through August, the Maker’s Camp at the historic Rancho Buena Vista Adobe during June, and the Wave Waterpark offers their popular Splash Camps (which are so popular, they are already sold out).

The City also partners with the County of San Diego for our annual Movies in the Park series. These three events are free and are family friendly. Bring a blanket, lawn chairs, and a picnic to enjoy while taking in a popular film outdoors in a City park.

Across the City, you can find numerous experiences that make summer special. From dining in our historic downtown, enjoying a cold one at one of Vista’s many breweries to spending the day at Alta Vista Gardens or the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum, Vista has it all. To keep up with the City’s great summer activities, visit cityofvista.com/vistasummer. Happy summer, Vista!

Ciao Ristorante Italiano Takes Us To Italy

In the early 1970’s, on the small Italian island of Ponza, Joe could be found working in his family restaurant, helping his parents serve tourists during the warmer months. But the sandy beaches couldn’t keep him. At 19, he was ready to explore the world.

That’s when he and his brother, Aniello, made the trip to New York and stayed with an aunt living in the Bronx, eventually moving to Connecticut. But there was more – Joe needed to see California.

He remembers, “I couldn’t believe the beautiful weather when we arrived in December. There was no turning back, so I started looking for work in San Diego. In the process, I discovered that no one knew anything about Italian cooking. Everything came from a can, even ravioli!” With restaurant experience and a passion to create authentic Italian food, he saved his money and opened his first restaurant in 1972. Gaetano’s Italian Restaurant has two locations: Spring Valley and Lakeside, which are managed by his brothers, Aniello and Aldo Di Giovanni. He opened Ciao Ristorante Italiano in 1997, after discovering the rural community of Vista.

“I made the decision that this is where I would build my business and raise my family,” says Joe. He and his wife, Gloria, have three children who all work in the restaurant today. “We are a team,” says Gloria. You can feel Gloria’s excitement as she describes the family’s vision behind the recent expansion of Ciao. “We wanted our guests to enjoy the Italian way of sharing a meal with friends and family, which is often followed by a walk to nearby shops. At Ciao, you can walk to our marketplace and select a hand-made gelato and have it brought to your table for dessert.”

“Over the years, we have helped families celebrate weddings, graduations and often, celebrations of life. We are honored that loyal customers have chosen our restaurant to celebrate the most important times in their lives,” says Gloria. “We want to make it perfect, so our guests leave with a feeling of satisfaction and happiness.”

Ciao really does take you to Italy. It was designed to transport us to the sights, sounds and delicious aromas of Italian cooking – that can make appetites soar! Everything tastes as if it was harvested and prepared that day. Freshness is everything at Ciao.

“Our latest news is that my brother, Gioacchino, will be partnering with us to oversee catering,” adds Joe. “He and his qualified staff from Italy promise to make customers fully feel the Italian experience, like no other time in Ciao history.”

We have great pride in our Italian culture and want to share this joy with everyone.

Joe remarks, “The Vista Chamber of Commerce has helped us promote our business. As members, we’ve enjoyed the networking and positive effect it has had on Ciao Italiano Ristorante.“

Every journey has a story. Giuseppe Di Giovanni, fondly known as Joe, talked about his path to building Ciao Ristorante Italiano at 2015 East Vista Way, in Vista, and what it means to follow the Trattoria tradition: making guests feel welcome and serving a menu that almost speaks Italian itself.

the Moonlight Amphitheatre in the last couple of years, you may have nibbled on a delicious, gourmet, grilled-cheese sandwich before the show from Bread & Cheese Eatery, a very niche, San Diego-based mobile catering business.

Founded in 2016 by Justin Frank and Devin Gneiting, the company began with a focus on public and private events such as street fairs, farmers’ markets, and festivals along with weddings, corporate gigs, parties and everything in between. Today, along with their ongoing presence at the Moonlight, they have three full-time employees, including their Catering Manager Michael Rubalcava, and 25-30 part-time employees. The company has grown from one tent to five tents running simultaneously most weekends at various events and catering jobs. They can make up to 1,000 sandwiches a day during their busiest times.

“We love what we do,” says Justin. "I feel fortunate to work with my best friend, it definitely makes coming to work a lot more enjoyable, also not having a boss is great!" Their friendship actually goes back a generation. Their parents were friends before Devin and Justin were even born, so the boys grew up together and the families are still very much connected.

“We both have more than 20 years’ experience in the restaurant industry and wanted to start our own business doing what we know best,” explains Justin. “We’re not classically trained chefs, but entrepreneurs and we loved the idea of being mobile so we could bring our business where the people are,” he says. “We thought about pizza, tacos and other things, but loved the idea of a comfort food like grilled cheese with a twist that features high quality ingredients and customizable combinations.”

Justin says they use fresh bread from Sadie Rose Bakery for every sandwich along with high quality cheeses and custom spreads of different flavors from which customers can select. There are also items like salads, French fries and pretzels to go with the sandwiches. “We also make our own vegan coconut tomato soup, which pairs well with our sandwiches and is extremely popular,” says Justin. “Over the years, our menu has morphed based on customer demand and new flavors. The Classic (their most popular) was originally named the Mucho Queso, but was re-named because so many people had no clue what it meant. Our second most popular sandwich, The Pizza-Grill-Zoni, wasn't even on the menu when we first started. We’re always tweaking things and finding best practices in everything we do.”

The partners are also very proud of the fact that they have financed most of the business expansion on their own and slowly but surely built the business, buying equipment and supplies over time. Further expansion is in the works with the opening of brick & mortar restaurants in the months ahead. “Most companies start with a restaurant and move into catering. We’re doing it the opposite way so that they complement and support each other,” Justin explains.

Justin and Devin value the relationships they’ve made here in Vista. “We joined the Chamber because we love the people and our work at the Moonlight,” says Justin. “We wanted to really get to know other business owners who help make Vista such a great place to live.”

Due to the limited availability of grocery items, and the limited times products were on the shelves, Bimbo made it their priority to ensure first responders and hospital workers had access to the grocery items they needed. They delivered their products directly to the hospitals to provide the front-line workers with necessary items. Following this initiative, they worked with school programs to provide for students in the most need, continuing their work within the community.

Here in Vista, Bimbo uses its resources to help those near their sale center. These sale centers distribute Bimbo products throughout the surrounding areas. Bimbo hopes to improve their visibility through local engagement. Each facility is provided with a budget in order to support their local com-

munities, if you have a project you feel Bimbo could support, please email them at: Casey.Badillo@grupobimbo.com.

Feeding those in the community is just one way Bimbo acts locally. They have worked tirelessly to become energy

efficient and sustainable at their bakery located in Escondido, California. Their bakery has received the coveted Green Plant Award. It is important for them to focus on clean energy. In 2022, they were awarded the Clean Energy Award by the EPA. With over 18 Energy Star facilities throughout the nation, the Escondido bakery is a great example. They produce over 50% of their used energy through solar panels and have repeatedly won the Energy Star award. They take pride in continuing to improve their sustainability and eco-friendly efforts. They make it a point to go on a treasure

hunt to find new and innovative ways that can improve their energy efforts. This is Bimbo’s first year working with the Vista Chamber of Commerce, they feel aligning with the Chamber will help improve their engagement and visibility within the Vista and North County communities. Frontline Workers

By Anne McDonnell on

The idea for Frontline Careers (FLC) came from a challenge made by television personality Mike Rowe (host of the show Dirty Jobs). While speaking to a group of business leaders in 2018, Rowe called on them to place more emphasis on people with skilled trades and less on those with college degrees. This idea stuck with Jason Roberts, cofounder and CEO of FLC. “At the time I worked for a Fortune 200 company, running large-scale frontline operations. I had witnessed first-hand that the people creating immense value for the company weren’t always treated as the valuable assets they were.” Roberts wanted to help bridge the gap between company owners and managers and the frontline staff who bring their products and services to customers. Says Roberts, “I thought, let’s make it easy for frontline workers to know which companies actually value and invest in their frontline employees. Let’s provide a level of truth, trust, and transparency that does not exist today.”

FLC is a workplace assessment and employer recognition company that seeks to find, recognize, and highlight businesses that treat their frontline em-

ployees well. Those that do are certified by FLC as being Frontline Friendly,SM and those that go through the assessment but miss the certification bar still receive detailed feedback to help them get there. Says Roberts, FLC “believes maximizing profitability and doing right by your frontline employees are not mutually exclusive.”

The main focus of FLC is its certification program. FLC anonymously surveys the frontline employees of a business (positions where staff must be present to do their jobs), and then scores their feedback. “In essence, the company’s frontline employees ultimately determine who gets certified,” explains Roberts. This is important because the

work experience of a frontline employee differs from someone working in the corporate office or upper management. “By including feedback from [management] roles in a workplace assessment, you water down what it is really like to work for a company if you are a frontline employee,” Roberts says.

Typical FLC clients are small- to mediumsized businesses with as few as five frontline employees or as many as several hundred that want to showcase how well they treat their employees (to attract the attention of job seekers and customers); build pride with their current employees; and/or get candid, honest feedback from their current frontline employees on how to improve their workplace experience, says Roberts. Companies that complete the assessment and earn recognition as a Frontline Friendly Certified business receive promotion from FLC and the Vista Chamber of Commerce (if they are a member). Says Roberts, “We want to celebrate and highlight those businesses that are doing what is right for their employees and assist the ones who want to learn how to do it better.”

Job-seekers also benefit from FLC services. They know that companies displaying the “Frontline Friendly” badge have undergone a thorough assessment, says Roberts. The FLC website also offers a job search that connects frontline employees with jobs that offer benefits and perks beyond a paycheck.

Future plans for FLC include expanding to the remainder of Southern California, and eventually going nation-wide. Says Roberts, “Our vision is that one day every frontline employee will work for a Frontline Friendly company. And that vision started in Vista.”

or the past four years I have had the privilege of serving as a member of the Board of Directors for the Vista Chamber of Commerce and feel privileged to be here as the organization celebrates its 100th anniversary. This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on the legacy that the Chamber has established over the years and to recognize the vital role it plays in the Vista community.

A legacy is a powerful thing. It is the impact we leave on the world and the people around us. For the Vista Chamber of Commerce, the legacy is one of community building and economic growth. Since its inception in 1923, the Chamber has been committed to promoting the interests of local businesses, facilitating networking opportunities and advocating for policies that support economic development.

In fact, the Chamber was instrumental in the creation of Tri-City Healthcare District in the 1950s and the opening of Tri-City Medical Center in 1961. Now, more than 60 years later, Tri-City Medical Center has established itself as a provider high quality medical care in multiple specialties and serves as an economic engine for the region. This wouldn't have been possible without the vision and support of the Vista Chamber of Commerce.

But the legacy of the Chamber goes far beyond that. Throughout its history, the Chamber has also been a champion of community service, education and workforce development. The Chamber honors local students through its monthly Rising Star awards, places hundreds of high school interns at local businesses where they develop in-demand skills, and is a major contributor to local culture through the Strawberry Festival and other major events. The Chamber's commitment to giving back to the community is a testament to its values and the importance of social responsibility in business.

That being said, the legacy of the Chamber is not just about the organization itself. It is also about the people who have served in leadership roles over the years, including my grandfather, Wilfred H. "Chick" Mensching. My grandfather was a banker who served on the Chamber's Board of Directors in the 1970s and helped lay the foundation for its legacy.

Growing up, I was inspired by my grandfather's dedication to his community and his commitment to making a difference. His legacy has had a profound impact on my own values and career path. In many ways, the legacy of the Chamber and my grandfather's legacy are intertwined. Both are rooted in a commitment to community building and economic development, and both recognize the importance of collaboration and social responsibility.

As a member of the Board of Directors for the past four years, I have been honored to carry on that legacy and contribute to the Chamber's efforts to build a strong and vibrant community. And as we celebrate the Chamber's 100th anniversary, let us reflect on the important role it has played in shaping the Vista community and recognize the legacies of those who have contributed to its success.

Donated Beds Give Kids Sweet Dreams

Unfortunately, close to three percent of our nation’s children do not have a comfortable, safe space to sleep. What’s worse is that the percentage is even higher in Vista. To give you an idea of the enormity of the problem, the number of children without a bed is equal to the entire student population of an elementary school!

Here’s some good news. Chamber Members Steve and Marie Hoveln were so moved by this terrible situation that in 2022 they established the North San Diego County Chapter of “Sleep in Heavenly Peace,” a nationwide charitable organization dedicated to building and donating beds for needy children. Since August, volunteers have built more than 200 beds with 150+ kids ages 5 – 17 still on a waiting list. The chapter serves all of Vista, Oceanside, Fallbrook, San Marcos and Escondido.

“At first, we just thought we would volunteer at another chapter’s bed-building event, but we couldn’t find any in all of Southern California,” says Marie. “We decided to think and pray about it before applying to open a chapter, but we knew it was the right thing for us. Volunteering has always been a big part of our lives. Because we feel so blessed and fortunate and have the ability to share our passion with other friends and co-workers, we knew we could do this. Our SHP motto is, “No kid sleeps on the floor in my town.”

Steve and Marie have deep roots in North County. They have lived here for decades and both their children and now grandchildren attend Vista schools. Marie is a long-time employee of VUSD while Steve works for Hunter Industries in San Marcos. Their daughter works for North Coast Church (NCC). Each month, the Hoveln’s host a bed-building

event on the grounds of NCC, or another sponsoring business. Each bed is made assembly-style and follows an exact pattern and process provided by the Sleep in Heavenly Peace organization. This ensures materials and standards are met for safety and quality purposes. The building events are mobile, so the Chapter will often schedule other events at various locations and businesses as desired. “At first, it took us three hours to build just two beds, but with a core team of 12-15 leaders and 40 volunteers, we can now build at least 22 beds in about three hours!” says Marie. The organization relies entirely on volunteer labor, a national level sponsorship/collaboration with Lowe’s Home Centers for discounted building materials, and private donations to purchase mattresses and bedding. The actual hard cost to build a twin bed, purchase a mattress and provide all new bedding is $250.

“We are blessed to work with Arnulfo Hernandez of IDEAL Mattress Company at 1310 N. Melrose Drive in Oceanside for our mattresses,” says Marie. “He generously provides them at a low cost, and his support also allows us to save on storage fees.” The Hoveln’s also received a $4,000 start-up loan from the Lowe’s Charity Foundation to help with the required tools, but now they must look at ways to cover all of their expenses for each bed.

If you know of any needy child of any background in North County that could use a twin bed, (or a set of bunkbeds for siblings) the application is online at www.shpbeds.org. There is a brief vetting process, but no personal questions about income or why the child is in need are asked.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Donate online. Visit www.shpbeds.org and follow them on FB sleepinheavenlypeacenorthSD

2. Volunteer at a bed-build event. No experience required. Check their website for upcoming events near you.

3. Host an event at your workplace or school, promoting volunteerism and team-building.

4. Volunteer to deliver beds and help set them up in a child’s home. They especially need Spanish speakers. If you have a pickup truck or SUV, that’s a plus.

5. Look for great discounts on twin bedding at your favorite stores and have the items delivered to the Hoveln’s. Bed-in-aBag deals are great. Marie likes to select bedding based on age and gender whenever possible.

6. Make a quilt or no-sew blanket to add a personal touch to your donation. It’s a great project for a scout troop or church group.

7. Spread the word! The more who know, the faster we can help local children!

at Vista Unified School District

When we look at the future of public transportation, we might think of what is happening with our local transit districts. However, it may be the iconic yellow school bus that is pointing the way towards what we can expect to see next. The American School Bus Council estimates that each day over 25 million children take one of the more than 480,000 school buses that comprise the collective national fleet. This makes school buses the single largest mass transit system in the nation.

Vista Unified School District may best exemplify the next evolution of school bus technology. This is because Vista Unified is going green with everything from fourth generation electric lawn mowers to their school bus fleet. Recently the first six fully green technology electric buses arrived at the district bus yard. We anticipate converting more than 15 buses to electric in the coming year. “This conversion represents our commitment to the environment and positioning the district for operational success now and in the future” stated Superintendent Dr. Matt Doyle. Vista Unified, a nationally recognized thought leader in educational excellence and innovation, has taken a proactive approach that has included receiving grant awards for going green.

Over the next two months the first group of the Vista Unified electric buses will undergo commissioning. This is a rigorous process to ensure that school buses meet the highest safety standards for student riders and the public. Once commissioning has been completed, you can plan to see students being transported on these new green technology additions to the district bus fleet. However, it will come as no surprise that while these buses will be powered by green technology, they will still appear in the same iconic yellow that have been the hallmark of school buses for over 80 years

That’s certainly the case for Randall Hickman and Doug Davis, the founders and co-owners of Vista Broadway Theater located on East Broadway, downtown. The theater is celebrating 19 years since it opened in June of 2004. But for more than 30 years, Randall and Doug, who are multiple award-winning actors in their own right, have happily inspired hundreds, if not thousands of budding thespians of all ages through a variety of local shows and summer camps. In fact, because of their positive influence on generations of Vistans, the Vista Historical Society recently honored the duo by inducting them into the Vista Hall of Fame on May 13.

“We really love what we do,” says Randall. “Both Doug and I have been involved in theater productions since the 1980s when we met during a theater production in Utah. In 1989, we discovered San Diego County and Vista and instantly fell in love with the city and the strong theater community here.”

Soon after arriving, Randall was cast as the lead in three different Moonlight Amphitheatre productions. He then got

involved with the “Arts Between the Tracks” program working with kids.

“We were surprised at how much fun we had despite me being the oldest of eight and Doug the oldest of seven,” he explains. “We loved it so much, we started ‘PREMIERE FOR KIDS’, our youth production company in 1992.” A year later, they established PREMIERE PRODUCTIONS for adults and they’ve been going strong ever since.

“It all came together so perfectly,” says Randall. “It was the right place, the right time, and we were completely blown away by the talent of the kids here.” Randall says they also found an angel in fellow Chamber member, Clay McCarthy, owner of Quality Lock & Safe, Inc. who offered them the use of a small, adobe building downtown for rehearsal space. The McCarthys are like family to Randall and Doug as Clay’s daughter Cassidy grew up in their youth theater programs and is now an incredibly talented actress who was one of the stars of their Spring production, “Girls Night Out”.

In 2003, Clay offered them the 60-seat theater space they currently have and the rest is history. “We mapped out everything we wanted to do with the space inside and out that very first night and it’s exactly what you’ll see today,” says Randall. “We’re proud of the fact

that we also financed most of the work ourselves.”

Both Randall and Doug are extremely hands-on. They literally do everything when it comes to running the business—from writing, producing, directing and lighting to costuming, stage design, promotions and putting on their annual Youth Summer Camps. In 2013, they hired Tommy Eyler as their Youth Theater Manager, whom the kids love, too. “We think of ourselves as a lean, mean, well-oiled machine,” laughs Randall.

Although Covid put a damper on their efforts for a while, their four summer camps this year filled up in just 48 hours. “We went from 40 kids during Covid to more than 300 this year!” says Randall. “We’re really bouncing back and it feels good. What we are working on now is trying to get our long-standing patrons to come back to the theater and see our adult theater productions. Season tickets went on sale in February and we’re beginning to see people whom we haven’t seen in a very long time.”

The theater offers a wide variety of dramatic shows, large and small, musicals, cabarets, and various special events throughout the year, so there’s something for everyone. “It’s such an exciting time for us,” Randall says.
