Career exploration is important for middle and high school students as it helps them realize what the world of work looks like. It accomplishes this by helping students connect the dots between skills learned in school and how they apply in the real world. Career exploration is also one of the best ways to increase students’ career success. This is one of the reasons the Vista Chamber launched the Velocity Internship Program last year. Thanks to an initial grant from the City of Vista in 2022 and additional investment from the Vista Unified School District this spring, the Vista Chamber was able to place 50 students in paid internships this summer.

Chamber is Leaning into Workforce Development.

2023 Interns

Incoming high school seniors from Vista or attending Vista schools were eligible for placement at a variety of local businesses and non-profit organizations. This summer the students explored careers in business administration, accounting, marketing, sales, construction, teaching and child development, nursing and other health-care roles, podcasting, video editing, logistics, data analysis, scheduling and so much more! This hands on experience provided paid career exploration to the students and additional capacity to Vista businesses – a total win-win. I am so thankful to the City of Vista for funding the launch of this program and to Vista Unified School District for the continued investment. We understand that students of today are the workforce of tomorrow. Our businesses need talent and we are proud to serve as a connector in this way.

Another way the Chamber is connecting businesses and talent is through our Rising Stars Student of the Month program. You can learn more about this important program on page 31 and make sure to check out the program highlight video, too. In May, we awarded more than $24,000 in scholarships and we kick off the 10th year for Rising Stars in September. We look forward to celebrating many more Rising Stars Students to come!

And, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our collaborative career exploration project www.socalworkforce.org. This website allows students or career transitioners to learn about careers with north county businesses and discover the paths needed to acquire that position. We would love to feature your business or career. Contact us at workforce@vistachamber.org.

Booze Brothers Brings Bigger Concerts to North County

Atthe tail end of 2021, the Vista City Council adopted an ordinance that makes allowances for approved local businesses to host live music and entertainment, both indoors and out. With this much-needed change on the books, Vista’s ability to offer a wider variety of nightlife options to the community has greatly increased. Guidelines and rules are in place that businesses offering live music must adhere to, complying with the local ordinance specifications. One requirement for in-person outdoor performances is having an adequate patio area in which to host the event.

Established in 2013 by Dave and Donny Firth, Booze Brothers Brewing Co. is a local brewery known for its stellar and innovative lineup of craft brews and has always featured live music at their Vista brewery and tasting room. With the newer relaxed live entertainment restrictions, they are now bringing in

larger-scale concerts to their Vista Business Park venue, while continuing their ongoing support of local bands. They have amped up the space behind their tasting room with lighting and a small stage, making use of their spacious patio area that can fit as many as 400-500 people when employing standing room only. The rear of the patio slopes up naturally which is perfect for concertgoers in the back to be able to view the stage. Picnic tables that usually adorn the patio will be moved out of the way to accommodate the crowds when there are large numbers in attendance. They will continue to host smaller free shows but are excited to have the ability to offer more big-name musicians and bands and these ticketed events will feature what General Manager/Minister of Fun Josh Thompson calls “touring bands of Belly Up Tavern caliber.” The variety of entertainment offered should only get better with time and experience.

You can view Booze Brothers entertainment lineup at a dedicated Instagram page named Live at Booze Brothers under the handle @live_from_booze-bros. Find more information about their brewery and business online at boozebros.com. The brewery and concert venue is located at 2545 Progress Street in Vista, and they are open 7 days a week. Come out and enjoy their iconic brews and some live music!

As the newly appointed Chairman of the Board for the Vista Chamber of Commerce, I am thrilled to share my journey and experiences within this dynamic organization. The past couple of years have been nothing short of amazing, and I am grateful for the opportunities the Chamber has provided for me and my business.

Prior to becoming a business owner, my experience with Chambers of Commerce was limited to getting restaurant & winery tour maps in Solvang. I only perceived them as sources of information for tourists seeking local recommendations. However, my perspective shifted drastically upon joining the Vista Chamber. I discovered the many benefits it offers, with networking emerging as an invaluable asset.

Networking is critical for building professional relationships, and the Vista Chamber excels in providing a diverse range of opportunities. Through events like Coffee & Conversation, Business Mixers, Ribbon Cuttings, and more, we can all find our networking comfort zone. These gatherings have enabled me to engage with like-minded individuals who share a vision for Vista's bright future.

It wasn’t until I joined the board of directors that I truly got a feel for the Chamber's impact. Sitting among fellow passionate board members, I’ve been able to see great business minds contribute their ideas and energy, honed through their own businesses, to move Vista forward. What makes their contribution even more exceptional is that they volunteer their time, truly demonstrating their commitment to our community.

One of our Chamber's notable achievements is the Velocity- The Vista Chamber podcast, which has connected us more intimately with local businesses and elected officials. It has become a platform for showcasing the stories and aspirations of Vista's vibrant business community. Through these conversations, we deepen our understanding of our city's potential and align our goals effectively.

Yet, the Velocity internship program holds a special place in my heart. Mentoring students entering their senior year is an incredibly rewarding experience. As supervisors, we not only provide them with valuable work experience but also instill an understanding of the daily decisions business owners face. This program reflects the Chamber's commitment to nurturing the next generation, which fills me with immense pride as a member.

I am passionate about the Vista Chamber of Commerce and the remarkable work we are doing. Our accomplishments thus far are only the beginning of what lies ahead. I can only hope that each member recognizes and cherishes the many opportunities the Chamber presents. I’ve witnessed firsthand from my office window how hard the Chamber staff works to make Vista thrive, and with every step, we are all inching closer to our shared vision of success.

I will tell anyone who asks that my time with the Vista Chamber of Commerce has not just been beneficial for my business, but for me personally. Experiencing the power of networking, collaborating with dedicated board members, and witnessing the positive impact of our programs have solidified my faith in this organization. Together, we will continue to achieve greatness and uplift the Vista business community to new heights.

a common sight to see people lined up on Main Street in front of a multi-windowed happiness dispensary… Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream! Franchised but locally owned and operated, they have been a sweet complement to downtown, historic Vista. According to owner Travis Campbell, “we always wanted to be in Vista, but it was all about finding the right place.” He added, “Vista has a great history and to watch Main Street be transformed over the past few years has been amazing.” They felt that Main Street embodied their “old scoop shop feel” with their walkup window service model. Since opening this particular shop, Handel’s has been impressed by the vibrant family vibes in their customer base and the leadership in Vista which has been both active and supportive of their business as well as the others in the community. Established in 1945, the company has been around for a long time and still uses the tried-and-true recipes of their founder, Alice Handel, with 100 flavors in their vault. One of the things that makes them unique is that they handmake their ice creams in-house daily, with the freshest and most quality ingredients. That my friends is something you can taste! You will find creative and satisfying combinations of ingredients that produce stand-out flavors that can only be found at Handel’s. Besides ice cream, you can find a long list of cool treats to suit your cravings and please everyone in your group.

as showing or mentioning the flyer at the order counter and a percentage of proceeds go back to your group. It’s so simple, yet effective at the same time. Handel’s is truly making a difference in Vista!

Next time you are in downtown Vista be sure to visit Handel’s. You can find them at 207 Main Street. They are open daily with hours varying according to the season. Follow them on Instagram at @handelsvista.

Another attribute that makes Handel’s distinctive is their commitment to make a positive impact in their community through various forms of involvement. They frequently participate in fundraising partnerships with local clubs and organizations like The Boys and Girls Club, Vista Fire Fighters Association and San Diego Sheriff’s Night Out, as well as conducting occasional “give back” campaigns when hard times hit the community. Since opening in 2021, Handel’s has partnered with 25 public and private schools. They employ local high school students and take pride in being actively involved with their schools. In addition to doing fundraisers at their shop, you can find them with ice cream carts at local football games, sponsoring student art shows, events at games and more. They have even dabbled in student enrichment opportunities. Recently they visited Vista Innovation and Design Academy and educated junior and senior students in the areas of sales, entrepreneurship and marketing.

For community partnership inquiries, you will find the appropriate form which is quick and easy to fill out on their website www.handelsicecream.com. Once everything is in place for your fundraiser, it’s as easy

Dear Vista Community,

As the sun sets on another beautiful summer in our beloved city, I am grateful and excited to reflect on shared moments we’ve experienced together in Vista. It has been a fantastic summer in Vista, and I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to all of you for making it so memorable.

One highlight that stands out this summer is the tremendous success of our new Food Truck Friday events. These gatherings have brought families and friends together to enjoy the delightful ambiance of downtown Vista while savoring a wide array of delicious food. Food Truck Fridays are a testament to the can-do attitude that defines our downtown community, and I couldn't be prouder of how it has fostered a sense of unity and togetherness among us all.

Though the summer days may be waning, there are still many things to look forward to as we head into fall! Our downtown scene will continue to bustle with life even as the kids return to school. In the coming months, look for special events that promise to enrich our community spirit and create unforgettable experiences.

One such event is the upcoming celebration of a significant milestone in our city's history—the City of Vista's 60th anniversary as an incorporated city! On October 14, 2023, we will host the Vista Block Party, a grand celebration commemorating six decades of progress, resilience, and camaraderie. The Vista Block Party will be a day of joy and jubilation with live music, an array of vendors, scrumptious food, and refreshing brews, all in the heart of our beloved downtown Vista.

Moreover, I am thrilled to see how our entire city has come alive during the summer. From the Wave Waterpark to the Moonlight Amphitheatre, our Independence Day Celebration, and the delightful Movies in the Park events, Vista has been buzzing with activity, laughter, and shared experiences. These cherished gatherings have brought us closer as a community, reaffirming our commitment to creating a thriving environment for everyone.

As we bid farewell to this splendid summer, let us carry the warmth of these moments with us into the coming seasons. Together, we can build on the camaraderie and sense of belonging that makes Vista a remarkable place to call home.

Once again, thank you for being our vibrant city's heart and soul. I look forward to seeing each of you at the Vista Block Party and the exciting events that await us in the months ahead.

There is just something special about breakfast foods and Silverback Breakfast and Cafe has it down to a science. This family business is operated by Jose de Jesus Tapia Melchor and his family. Between them they have a collective of 40+ years of restaurant experience. Working together with their partner, Jeff Klein, they have opened a beautiful and flourishing restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch in Vista.

Jose began to conceptualize Silverback Breakfast as he worked his way through an establishment, and with time he acquired the skills needed to run his own restaurant. He wanted to create a legacy for his family, and he soon started to look for the perfect location for his restaurant. After hearing about the supportive community of Vista he began narrowing the focus. Jeff Klein, an experienced restaurant owner and veteran, reached out to Jose. Jeff heard Jose had been looking for a property and suggested that they work together to create a business model and restaurant that had the opportunity to be successful right out of the gate. Once aligned they open the doors to Silverback Breakfast and Cafe on January 16th, 2023. Immediately, the community met them with the excitement and anticipation they had hoped for. Jose had expected the first year to be about slowly growing and integrating into the community but in just the first six months they have been busier than imagined and are already looking at ways to incorporate more seating.

Serving food prepared from scratch, the location offers something that is hard to find, food made from start to finish

with a labor of love! A crowd favorite on the menu is the Silverback French Toast, where they use a cinnamon roll as the bread. Yes, those cinnamon rolls are made from scratch! Another notable item is the Chicken Fried Steak featuring a tenderized New York steak. The Home Fries have also created a bit of a buzz in the community. Also offering an onsite barista and fresh pastries, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Not only is Jose and his family offering delicious meals and quality food prepared fresh, but they are also giving back to the community. They have partnered with many local organizations, including the Vista Chamber of Commerce. They were members before they even open the doors! The first two months after opening they extended offers to the Vista Unified School District to support teachers. Silverback Breakfast is also partnered with the sheriff’s office and welcomes them in regularly. They have even provided coffee carts to first responders to ensure that everyone is energized!

In addition to all their community programs, Silverback Breakfast and Cafe offers all Chamber members a 10% discount. If you weren’t already convinced

to stop in by hearing about the amazing food and their loving heart, then that 10% should get you in the door!

Visit Silverback Breakfast Thursday through Tuesday from 7 am – 2 pm (closed Wednesdays). To learn more about their location visit their website: SilverbackBreakfast.com, or follow them on Instagram: @SilverbackBreakfast. They are looking forward to serving you breakfast or lunch at 1717 East Vista Way Suite 117 in Vista.

Innovation and Environmental Commitment Drive Diving Mask Company

hen you think of scuba diving or snorkeling, you might picture someone wearing goggles and a mouthpiece for breathing under water—two separate pieces of equipment. But Ocean Reef Group offers a unique way to see and breathe under water: one piece that covers the entire face and includes an integrated breathing mechanism. Says Ocean Reef Operations Manager Lynne Snow, “Ocean Reef is known as the ‘full face mask company,’ and we are diversified in different segments: diving, snorkeling, and personal protection and medical [respirators/gas masks].” One of the advantages of full-face masks is that they can house a communications system for talking to diving partners and people on the surface, something divers aren’t able to do when they need to “hold onto” a separate mouth piece. Taking advantage of this, Ocean Reef also offers underwater communication systems to be used with its masks.

Innovation and expansion have always been at the heart of Ocean Reef, says

Snow. The company began in the late 1940s in Genova, Italy, as a small tire repair shop. Brothers Giorgio, Ruggero, and Gianni Gamberini experimented with rubber, and they partnered with a few others who were also working with rubber for masks and fins for scuba diving and snorkeling. In the late 1950s, the Gamberini brothers created a wrong rubber mix, and discovered that this mix floated. Shortly after, the first floating fins were on the market. Since then the Gamberini family has worked with rubber, plastics, and its derivates, finding new potential uses and markets.

Wanting to protect the environment its products help people explore, Ocean Reef has a strong commitment to

sustainability, Snow says, including solar panels, a recycling program, and plug-in company vehicles at the Vista facility. Company-wide, Ocean Reef reduces paper by digitalizing manuals, catalogs, brochures, and marketing materials. Beginning in January 2021 it created a universal packaging system with the same ink color and paper materials. “We are committed to responsibly reducing the environmental impact of materials used in the creation and packaging of [our projects],” says Snow. In addition, the company has an “Every Resource Counts” initiative that puts its cosmetically imperfect products back on the market at a discount (they retain full safety and functionality). And Ocean Reef’s most unique environmental initiative is Nemo’s Garden, which is a greenhouse that cultivates crops underwater and aims to address food security challenges, reduce the ecological footprint of traditional agriculture, and explore new frontiers in sustainable farming. The underwater farm is composed of six air-filled clear plastic pods, anchored to the bottom of the sea just off the coast of Noli, Italy. A new garden is in the works in Gilboa, Ohio.

Ocean Reef’s U.S. headquarters are based in Vista, with a sister company, Mestel, located in Genoa, Italy. “Our customers consist of original equipment manufacturers [that make devices from component parts], distributors, dealers, and some direct to consumer,” says Snow. “We cover the entire world.” Ocean Reef invents, designs, and produces its equipment. Its most popular products are the Neptune III Mask in its Diving Line and the QR+ Full Face Snorkeling Mask in its Snorkeling Line, according to Snow.

The company purchased Ocean Edge, an American scuba manufacturing company based in San Diego, in 1993, which brought it to the area. Ocean Reef moved from a location in San Marcos to Vista in October 2019. According to Snow, “Our company has been in the region for a long time and like the general feeling of North County, and we found that our current location came with ocean views— what’s not to love about working with a nice view of the ocean?” An added touch for a company that caters to ocean-lovers.

Jordyn Smith and Kaitlin Archer-Cahil, two best friends, had the idea of opening a doggy daycare in June of 2021. By September they opened the doors of Giddy Up Pup Pet Resort and Spa. Their idea of building a safe place for pets and their quick work brought the business to life in just a few months!

Giddy Up Pup offers a variety of services for your furry friend. On-site you will find daycare six days a week, overnight boarding seven days a week, and grooming four days a week.

Treating Your Furry Friends Like Family

When you enter the lobby you feel like you stepped into a 70’s living room! The beautiful aesthetic and welcoming atmosphere makes this groovy place exactly where you will want to bring your family pet. Jordyn said, “we put love and attention into every detail of opening the space”. The beautiful interior is just the beginning. They treat your pup like family and help put your mind at ease.

Before taking on new clients, they offer a free temperament placement, this is a no cost way to see if your pet is a match. This will also help you and your pup feel comfortable. It gives Jordyn and Kaitlin a chance to assess your dog and determine if placement will work well within the facility. This is an excellent way to keep the space safe and welcoming for all the pets making Giddy Up Pup their second home.

Jordyn said Vista has always been home to her and she loves the way that the community has welcomed Giddy Up Pup, they have found their way into the lives of many residents by taking care of their beloved family pets. At any time, they could have between 20 to 35 pups at daycare and 8 to 18 overnight guests. Overnight puppy guests are invited to stay in a bedroom setting where the overnight attendant sleeps with the dogs, allowing them to feel like they are at their home away from home.

Giddy Up Pup started with the Vista Chamber of Commerce on day one and it has proved to be very useful. Jordyn said that the VCC has been a supportive and welcoming community. Giddy Up Pup participated in the Vista Christmas Parade and was also nominated for New Business of the Year. They look forward to continuing their involvement in the organization to further extend their reach in the community they love so much!

With the winter holidays headed our way, now is the time to start booking your pet’s overnight boarding. Try to book the temperament placement by October to ensure your furry friend will have a place over the holidays. This proudly women owned business loves to welcome new members into their family and they look forward to welcoming your dog very soon!

Check out their adorable Instagram page, @TheGiddyUpPup for cute videos and information on their facility. You can also visit their website, TheGiddyUpPup.com to book your temperament placements and schedule your pet’s spa visits. Giddy Up Pup Pet Resort and Spa is located at 2020 Hacienda Drive, Suite E, Vista, CA 92081.

Today, Vista Irrigation District (also known as VID) serves water to over 134,000 customers; a century ago, it served a population of only 337 people with the majority of water going to the land. VID’s first annual report, for the year 1927, tells us that after the installation of the new water tanks, planting of citrus and avocados increased so rapidly that there was danger of running out of water. This crisis coincided with the building of Henshaw Dam in 1923, which constructed in just seven months with minimal power equipment use, by the San Diego County Water Company. Completion of the dam made it possible for the Vista community to receive a reliable source of water, instead of relying on wells in the area.

Considerable time and effort were spent in convincing some reluctant owners of the advantages and advisability of forming a district so that outside water

could be obtained. An election was held on August 28, 1923, and 100% of the eligible voters participated; the outcome of the election was 104 votes for and 4 votes against formation of VID. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to officially form VID on September 11, 1923.

At its inaugural meeting on September 18, 1923, VID’s Board of Directors (Board) agreed to enter into a perpetual agreement with the San Diego Water County Company to purchase water from the Lake Henshaw. Water released from Lake Henshaw had to be conveyed to and stored in Lake Wohlford, located northeast of Escondido. VID contracted with the Escondido Mutual Water Company to store water in the reservoir. From Lake Wohlford, the water still needed to be delivered to the community of Vista, and year later, in October 1924, VID’s Board

voted unanimously to issue $1.7 million of bonds to finance the construction of a 12-mile long concrete flume to complete the connection between Lake Henshaw and Vista.

In 1925, construction began on not only the flume, but also Pechstein Dam, five concrete reservoirs, and major pipelines that would make up the foundation of the VID’s water distribution network. The first water through the VID’s new facilities was delivered on February 27, 1926 and people came from miles around to celebrate it arrival. This celebration also marked the start of a population boom in the Vista area, as the population doubled in size from 1927 to 1928; orange, lemon and avocados groves flourished along rolling hills and by the mid-1940s, the Vista area was renowned as the “Avocado Capital of the World”, and its population had grown to well over

VID. Unfortunately, the following four years saw severe drought, reducing Lake Henshaw's storage level from 120,000 acre feet to less than 200 acre feet, and rationing was imposed for a short time. VID’s Board authorized the immediate drilling of a series of wells to pump water stored in the Henshaw basin, and by 1951, 38 wells were actively pumping water into Lake Henshaw to replenish lake levels.

Drought conditions and population growth eventually caused VID to look for other sources of water. On February 16, 1954, VID became a member of the San Diego County Water Authority to take advantage of water imported from the Colorado River and Northern California.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, the community’s agricultural land gave way to suburban development. The year 1955 saw a breakthrough in this agricultural community, when the first city-type, massbuilt subdivisions were started. The year 1955 also was the beginning of the decline of Vista as an avocado producing and packing center, due primarily to the collapse of the price structure (and the drought) which would continue well

24 VISTACHAMBER.ORG

into the 1960's. Many groves were split into parcels, and the building of homes on these parcels and in subdivisions continued throughout this period.

In order to supply enough high quality water to meet the demands of this rapid suburban growth, VID constructed a number of substantial infrastructure projects, replacing more than 50 miles of pipeline in the 1950’s and constructing three covered reservoirs in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The Escondido-Vista Water Treatment Plant, jointly owned by the City of Escondido and VID, was constructed in 1976.

While there is still some agriculture in existence today, since the 1970s, urbanization has overwhelmingly remained the main driver of

potable water delivery in VID’s service area. Current and future upgrades VID’s infrastructure include mainline replacements, new reservoir construction and reservoir rehabilitations and replacing the nearly 100 year-old, 12mile long flume. Investment in these substantial infrastructure projects will allow VID to continue to deliver a reliable supply of high quality water to its customers.

The vote of the people in 1923 revolutionized this small rural settlement inhibited by the lack of water. VID's century of service and stewardship has transformed this community from cattle grazing and dry farming to an agricultural wonderland and now into what it is today: a thriving community with a substantial business park, a professional theater production, a burgeoning micro-brew industry, and a revitalized downtown. VID has demonstrated its ability to adapt with these ever-changing landscapes over time. VID is proud of its track record over the last century and looks forward to many more successful years of service.

Celebrating our Graduates

This year we have over 1,400 graduates from our high schools. This is the culmination of more than a decade of hard work, determination, skills building, and knowledge development. We are very proud of every graduate and look forward to their successful transition to advanced education, career, and life as a contributing member of our community. Our graduates are not only talented but also very valuable. Have a look below at a snapshot of the colleges and universities they will be attending and over $5,000,000 in awards and scholarships they have received.

“We have so many exciting opportunities for youth and adults to make a difference.”

If you’ve seen those little red hearts by the names of a growing number of Vista Chamber members in our magazine or online, it’s because they are official Kindness Certified Companies! That means they have committed to creating a culture of kindness in the workplace and support the efforts of Kids for Peace, a local 501c3 charity.

The mission of Kids for Peace is to build a worldwide community of kind, compassionate and empowered young people. The nonprofit was established in 2006 by Jill McManigal, a mother of two young children, and a local teen, Danielle Graham. What started as a backyard club of caring kids has grown into an interconnected worldwide movement with youth working together to uplift our world through love and action.

Their signature program is The Great Kindness Challenge, a powerful, uplifting and positive kindness initiative. It was piloted with three Carlsbad schools in 2012, and in a grassroots fashion, the event caught on like a wildfire. Today, the Challenge is being conducted in all 50 states spanning 115 countries and includes 39,000+ schools with more than 19 million youth participating each year!

Using a 50-item kindness checklist, students are “challenged” to complete as many acts of kindness as possible in one week. The free, week-long event typically takes place during the last week of January, but can be conducted anytime, anywhere. Additionally, there is a year-long kindness curriculum that teachers can download for free.

Following the success of The Great Kindness Challenge in schools, Kids for Peace decided to bring the kindness program to businesses and the Kindness Certified Company program was born. In 2021, long-time Kids for Peace

reaching out to Chambers across the country and have signed up 22 more Chambers. It’s all so very exciting.” Malek goes on to explain that they send a “Kind Act of the Week” email and invite members to share it with their staff, challenging everyone to complete the activity to create a more inclusive, friendly, and positive work environment. The modest annual fee for companies to participate and become kindness certified helps to fund the free, educational curriculum for schools in Vista and beyond.

board member, Margi Malek, became the Director of the Kindness Certified Company program. Malek is a 37-year veteran of the Oceanside Unified School District and passionate about the program. “I feel so blessed to be part of this simple effort to bring a little bit of kindness into the business world,” she says. “In the last year, we have created partnerships with all four North County Chambers and now have 127 Kindness Certified Companies on board! I’m also

Kids for Peace also invites you to join them in some of their other upcoming activities, including their Create Kindness campaign in the winter, Peace Hero Gala in the spring and the Kenya Volunteer Tour in the summer.

“We have so many exciting opportunities for youth and adults to make a difference. We wholeheartedly believe that kindness can heal the world,” says Malek.

Rising Stars Winners: Where Are They Now?

The Rising Stars program was established in 2014 by the Vista Chamber in conjunction with all four of our community high schools. From September through May they work to identify and honor an outstanding senior from each school. Exemplary students are nominated by teachers or administrators who see them going above and beyond to help others and do their best, sometimes despite very difficult personal challenges. They often log hundreds of hours volunteering, are active in school and know what it truly means to be a good citizen. Winners are recognized at a monthly breakfast hosted by the Chamber where parents, mentors and members of the public attend. At the end of each school year, one of the winners receives a college scholarship.

With so many hopes and dreams expressed from the winners, we thought you’d enjoy an update from four very impressive Rising Stars.

Joy Wilson January, 2022 Vista High School

Rising Stars of the Month Sponsors:

Presenting Sponsors: Tri-City Medical Center; Watkins Wellness

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps; Dr. Matt Doyle; J&R Auto Body and Paint; Joe Green and Green Team Realty; Nick Ljubic Memorial Scholarship Fund; North County Daily Star; Kiwanis Club of Sunrise Vista; Tory Walker, Owner, Tory R. Walker Engineering; Wildwood Crossing and Cantina; City of Vista; Vista PEO Chapter; Sizzler; Santa Fe Dental; CSUSM

Very active in high school, Joy worked hard to maintain A+ average. She won several awards including a full ride scholarship to UC Berkeley. She just completed her freshman year. Joy spent this summer interning with County Supervisor Jim Desmond. “I learned about the work being done to combat all the challenges we face at the County level to help citizens,” she says. “It was very eye-opening and I see that there is still so much more we can do. I hope to be part of the solutions one day.” To achieve that goal, Joy is considering majors in criminal justice, legal studies or public policy. She is the only child of Yansan Wilson, an immigrant from Guyana, South America, who came to the U.S. in 2004. Joy and her single parent mother are extremely close. “One of my many goals, along with helping others, is to make enough money so that my mother can retire early, live free, travel and have some fun,” she says. We’re certain Joy will do just that!

Brian Delgado October, 2018 Vista High School

Born and raised in Vista, Brian dedicated countless hours to tutoring others and volunteering at the public library while also playing the trombone in the marching band and participating in the robotics and philosophy clubs—all while maintaining an excellent GPA. His efforts not only earned him the coveted 2018-2019 Rising Star of the Year scholarship, but a full ride to Stanford University where Brian just graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He heads back there this fall to begin a master’s in his field. “I have always loved math and science, solving puzzles, tinkering and wood working,” he says. “Mechanical Engineering is like functional art. There’s something quite beautiful about designing something that’s well executed and that creates solutions for others.” Brian just spent the summer working at Let’s Go Robotics, a life science automation company in Carlsbad. “I really love what I do. It is definitely the career for me.” Best of luck, Brian!

Alena Morales

September, 2015

Guajome Park Academy

Alena was the first student from Guajome Park Academy to ever receive the Rising Star award back in 2015. From a very young age, Alena has suffered from a systemic, chronic condition called Mast Cell Disease (MCD), that affects her entire body including GI and stomach issues. Despite her pain and sometimes severe symptoms, Alena found time to volunteer and participate in drama and other school activities. She quickly realized firsthand how critical good nutrition and proper nourishment is to one’s overall health, especially for anyone with a disability or long-term illness. Alena was blessed to receive grants and scholarships to UC Berkeley, where she not only studied nutrition, but became an advocate for disabled/disability rights. She conducted extensive research on public policy regarding disabilities, nutrition and the impact of CAL Fresh on Seniors and those on SSI. She also played a large role in the opening of the new Disability Cultural Center on campus. After graduating last year, she is now a Registered Dietician. Alena works at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. “I love my work,” she says. “People are so supportive and I love helping people through clinical nutrition. I’d also like to go back to school to either focus on public policy or maybe create an organization that focuses on personalized clinical nutrition. Either way, I want to make a bigger impact and help as many people as I can.” We are confident you will, Alena!

Jessica Velasco Ceron February, 2016 Guajome Park Academy

Coming from very humble beginnings, Jessica has always appreciated the guidance and support she received from wonderful teachers and mentors growing up in Vista, as well as from her family. Winning the 2015-2016 Rising Star of the Year Scholarship showcased her passion for leadership and advocating for others, especially first-generation immigrants like her. Today, Jessica has gone full circle and is living her dream as a high school math teacher at her alma mater, Guajome Park Academy. “I love the students, teaching math and tutoring,” she says. Jessica graduated from Palomar and then transferred to UCSD, graduating in 2020. A year later, she earned a Master of Education after receiving two major scholarships including the President’s Educator Fellowship from the UC Office of the President. She’s also credentialed in mathematics and has bilingual authorization. It doesn’t end there. Jessica is also a certificated translator and interpreter for Spanish and English. She’s also continuing studies at UCLA for TESOL and College Counseling certificates with a Ph.D. dream. Jessica just finished teaching a Coding & Robotics course, along with tutoring for UCSD TRIO this summer. “I know that I’m a life-long learner,” she says. “I truly believe education and serving the community go hand in hand. It’s the motto I live by, and that which always guides me.”

The Vikings not only impacted Northern European history but also, raided/interacted with the British and Irish Isles, Spain, North Africa, Southern Italy, Constantinople, North America, and even interacted with the Muslim Abbasid Califphate.

The Norway Hall Foundation has been a member of the Vista Chamber of Commerce since 2021.

This event is also an important fundraiser for the Norway Hall Foundation, with a percentage of the proceeds donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. “Because there is a high incidence of MS among people of Scandinavian descent – and many Vikings settled in Northern Europe - we want to help those who are genetically impacted by Scandinavian settlements outside of Scandinavia and others who experience this disease,” says Joey. According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, Sweden has among the highest nationwide prevalence of MS estimates in the world.**
