We took a one issue break in June due to the pandemic but are thrilled to be back with our Fall Edition and to share stories about our resilient businesses and community. The new interactive components in the digital version allow the reader to click and connect with the stories and our advertisers directly from the visual content. I hope you will take the time to visit these businesses online or in-person and support them with a like, share, or a purchase! We also have plenty of printed copies for distribution around town and at the Chamber office. Here’s a “support local” pro-tip – I keep a printed copy in the car to refer to the directory when I am out in Vista and need a business referral.

The past five months have been the most challenging our country has experienced in recent history and businesses have been hard hit. I am saddened when I hear that one of our Vista businesses has closed for good. The Vista Chamber exists to support, promote and advocate for businesses and we are proud to serve this role.

Over these last months, our team has worked harder than ever to support our member businesses. We have collaborated closely with the City of Vista and San Diego County to navigate through the ever-changing rules related to business closures and to advocate for the safe reopening of Vista businesses. We have spent countless hours participating in calls and webinars from government agencies, elected officials, and employer

resource groups to learn and share ways to help businesses during these unprecedented times. In addition, our work as part of the America’s Recovery Fund Coalition has resulted in H.R. 7671, the Small Business Comeback Act which is moving through Congress now.

Our team remains committed to keeping our members and community informed about the various facets of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts.

We continue to host events, albeit virtually, that allow our members to connect professionally and socially.

connected to our Vista child care providers and our local education leaders. As the mother of two young children, I understand the struggles of balancing child care, distance learning, and professional work while trying to nurture the mental and physical health of my family.

It’s a nearly impossible task and there are no simple answers. Our organization will continue to engage in this dialogue and advocate at every level of government regarding this topic.

Despite our role in supporting businesses, nearly all chambers of commerce were excluded from the bulk of CARES Act support and financing. The Vista Chamber has been impacted as business memberships and event revenue comprise the bulk of our operating budget. Like our members who have

had to adapt and sometimes get creative during this time, we are working on new services and revenue streams to support our operations. In addition to our business membership, we also have opportunities for individuals to support our mission through a Civic Membership. Despite the significant challenges facing our country, I continue to be encouraged by the vibrancy and resiliency of our community. I am also thankful to be working and advocating for our business members which gives me purpose during such an uncertain time.

I am particularly proud of our efforts to support business members via social media videos. Furthermore, our recently launched North County Cares program in conjunction with the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and San Diego North Economic Development Council (EDC) to support Vista Unified School District students. You can read more about this effort to bolster our local restaurants and support families in need on page 12.

Covid-19

The last few months have been anything but typical as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to affect us all. Amidst all the gloom and doom, there are some incredibly positive stories right here in Vista of perseverance, creativity, and compassion emanating from many of Vista’s non-profit organizations.

Their ability to pivot, adapt, and creatively find new ways to overcome obstacles while continuing to serve our community with essential services has been nothing short of miraculous.

This spirit of service and commitment to helping others is also reflected in our citizens. According to several non-profits, the outpouring of volunteerism and financial support from Vista residents has been record-breaking! In many cases, it has meant the difference between organizations staying open or closing their doors permanently. Here are a few examples of how we continue to stay Vista Strong during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Founded in 2003, Operation HOPENorth County (OHNC) serves families with children and single women experiencing homelessness by providing a safe, caring, and supportive environment to overcome barriers, secure stable housing, and become independent. Located on East Vista Way in Vista, OHNC works with a network of agencies to ensure that all clients have access to a variety of services and resources and new-found confidence in providing a stable home for themselves and their children.

North County Lifeline www.nclifeline.org “When the governor of California implemented quarantining and staying home back in mid-March, we knew we had to quickly make changes to how we serve our clients,” says Don Stump, Executive Director of this multi-service community-based organization. “In 10 days, we pivoted and converted all of our counseling services to tele-health and remote delivery by phone and video. We started around March 14th and by the end of the month, all of our 140 staff members, 30 interns, and trainees were off-site and up and running our programs again.” Stump says more than 1,200 people have already been helped remotely.

A tele-health platform was identified where they could ensure HIPAA protections and privacy so that everything they were doing would be approved by their funders and payers long-term.

“We developed a system that included new policies and procedures on how to utilize remote service delivery and adapt curriculum when working with clients remotely via Zoom,” explains Stump.

North County Lifeline’s mission is to help build self-reliance in youth, adults and families through high quality services.

It is focused on preventing child abuse, juvenile delinquency, improving behavioral health and preventing human trafficking. Headquartered in Oceanside, its largest service center is in Vista at 200 Michigan St. off of Vista Village Drive.

Every year, the organization serves about 5,000 people. An emergency fundraising campaign initiated earlier this spring called the Lifeline Emergency Covid-19 Fund raised $260K within days. Stump says more than $220K of it has been spent mostly in rent assistance

and utility services to help clients avoid homelessness. Lifeline also purchased gift cards for groceries and received significant food donations with the help of Feeding San Diego and the San Diego Food Bank. Funds raised were also used to help families with technology such as providing WIFI and computer tablets or laptops so they could participate in Zoom counseling sessions and home schooling.

“Despite all the challenges, there has been a silver lining,” says Stump. “We are having a higher rate of meeting attendance via tele-health in some programs and we have been able to reduce some overhead costs. Most importantly, we learned how to adapt and find ways to make it all work. We know now that we will never go back to normal. What this experience has done is allowed us to see that we can pivot and adjust so we can be prepared for whatever happens next. We also learned that our community is incredibly generous and always willing to help.”

According to Charity Singleton, OHNC Executive Director, the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted their organization. "The stay-at-home order, and being an essential infrastructure to the vulnerable population we serve, has challenged us in ways we could not have imagined,” she says. “Due to the crucial need for quarantine space, two of our family rooms needed to be vacant, reducing the number of families and single women we serve. Also, we typically rely on 80 to 90 volunteers per week to serve meals, teach classes, and help our youth programs, etc. Now we have less than 10.” This has increased the staff hours required to operate a 24-hour shelter program. In addition, the health guidelines to maintain a clean, safe shelter, requires additional man power to maintain social distancing and sanitation protocols. These requirements have also increased the costs of janitorial needs to maintain a safe and clean environment.

Nicole Ketcher, OHNC Director of Resource Development, describes how difficult things were in early spring. With an annual budget of close to $900,000 and monthly expenses of approximately $70,000, these factors placed an added strain on our already limited cash flow

"Our spring fundraiser was projected to raise $50K, but with the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, we quickly shifted to an online event and auction,” she explains. “This was our first online event and it was a real learning curve for us.

We were able to raise $13K. It was scary because we are an essential service for families and our organization and mission were in jeopardy."

That's when the organization's nine board members, 13-member staff and clients who were willing to help any way they could, moved into gear to raise money. They pulled out all of the stops—setting up an online "Keep our Doors Open" campaign, reaching out to everyone they knew, applying for grants, telling success stories via Facebook, and sharing testimonials and videos. In six weeks, their collective efforts raised $400K. "We couldn't have done it without our community," says Singleton. "The outpouring, the outreach, the media helping us, our director of programs, our shelter manager, everyone. It wasn't just one department. It was everyone together. It was simply incredible. People would call and say, 'How can I help?'"

With those secured funds, the shelter has been able to stay open during the COVID-19 pandemic, and families are allowed to stay as long as they need. The main priority is health and safety right now. All of its programs and classes on financial literacy, case management, job readiness and healthy life skills are now offered via Zoom.

The organization has been able to follow all the CDC rules and regulations to provide safety despite communal living in the shelter. "Our caring staff is exhausted serving with the added challenges associated with quarantining and COVID-19," says Singleton. "Our board is committed to encouraging and supporting the staff any way it can," she says. "I find that heroes usually rise to the top in times of crises, and this is one of those times."

Singleton is particularly proud of two major achievements at OHNC since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The first is the organization’s ability to still guide and place families in stable housing. our single women who has overcome so much and continues to excel,” says Singleton. “She graduated, found a part-time job, and is enrolled in community college, making her a first-generation college student.”

The second is the success of the Pantry of HOPE. It was established in late February to support and assist our alumni.

A partnership with The San Diego Food Bank and the abundance of food donations made sense to open the pantry, which has become an essential resource to families and community partners during COVID-19. The pantry provides diapers, canned foods, staple items and fresh produce each week. More than 8,000 pounds of food have been distributed since March. OHNC has partnered with a variety of community organizations and regularly serves close to 20 families per week, where more than 50 percent include very young children.

"It's an ongoing challenge with COVID-19," adds Ketcher, “These are challenging times that we are all in, and like many of our partners in the community, funding is critical to continue providing vital services to the most vulnerable populations. But we are constantly reminded that we are all in this together.

With the support of our community, our donors, and dedicated volunteers, many of who are right here in Vista, we know that our families have a hopeful future. We have seen how this community comes together, and lives are being

New Haven Youth and Family Services www.newhavenyfs.org New Haven provides intensive inpatient and outpatient clinical intervention, special education, and career technical education for emotionally disturbed youth and their families. It also provides inpatient treatments and outpatient mental health services as well as therapeutic services that are all designed to reduce inpatient placement and keep kids successful in their home school district. The organization has a full staff of 200 and includes those who care for 36 adolescent boys 24/7 in New Haven’s six community-based homes.

Doreen Quinn, CEO for the organization for the last 32 years, and her team are seeing an uptick in students expressing feelings of anxiety and depression, family crises, mental health issues and trauma these days. She referred to the current crisis as “Pandemic Squared” because of the multi-layered impact the disease is having on the kids. “We are providing online instruction per their IEP, but the students and families really need greater support,” she says. “They

San Diego/North County Food Bank www.sandiegofoodbank.org “Before Covid-19, we provided food to 350,000 people county-wide every month,” says Jim Floros, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank (SDFB). “Since Covid-19, this has increased to nearly 600,000 people per month--an increase of more than 70 percent.” The Food Bank’s North County hub is currently located on 1445 Engineer Road, Suite 110 in Vista. A local organization founded in 1977, the Food Bank reaches those in need through a network of 500 nonprofits throughout the county. In 2005, the SDFB assumed control of the North County Food Bank, now located in Vista.

“We want to get back to creating an environment of calmness, normalcy, and a sense of safety and routine as soon as possible for our students,” explains Quinn.

are referred for services because their learning handicap is emotionally and mental health related, which makes engagement with online instruction very difficult. This has been a very challenging time for all of us.”

She says the priority is to provide students structure and a sense of connectedness during these days of sheltering at home and quarantining. They have provided laptops and ensured students have access to WIFI while continuing to provide as much emotional support as possible during the school day. “We are giving kids incentives to complete lessons with behavioral incentives, such as raffle ticket drawings for completed

school work, and special attention to maintaining a caring and strong relationship with each student.”

Summer school sessions began June 30th back in the classroom. In this environment, everyone is required to wear masks and follow all CDC protocols. More than 90 percent of the students are in attendance. “We want to get back to creating an environment of calmness, normalcy, and a sense of safety and routine as soon as possible for our students,” explains Quinn.

New Haven, like many of our area non-profits, relies on the generosity of its community partners and individuals to meet the needs of its students. Right

now, there is a need for help with remodeling one of the homes for the kids, equipment repair, vocational program support and computer program repairs.

In-kind or financial support is always appreciated.

The program also benefits from the ongoing support of The Friends of New Haven--a group of 25 Vista women who for the last 15 years have donated their time and money to make teens feel special. They help give them a sense of home and family during their eight to 12 months while in the program.

“The work they do is so important and meaningful. Our kids feel truly cared for because of their efforts,” Quinn says.

Back in March, the leadership team took important steps to better prepare for what was coming, so they quickly pivoted, created a strategy, and developed a three-tiered plan. Phase 1: Remove all obstacles that prevented the fast and most efficient way to distribute food to all of its non-profit partners. 2.

Conduct four mass distribution events at large venues throughout the county; and 3. This program launched July 1.

The Super Pantry is modeled after the North County branch in Vista. Typically, 200-300 people per day drive up to a pop-up tent in the parking lot, open their trunks, and food items are provided. “It creates complete client dignity because it is quick and efficient,” says Floros. “The mass distributions we held earlier in the spring attracted thousands of people, but the lines were hours long and people were turned away. Unfortunately, these mass distributions can only serve about 1,000 cars. However, several thousand cars showed up and many left without any food, which lacks client dignity and is heartbreaking.” >

When a Food Bank distribution site participates in the Super Pantry Program, they have to commit to distributing food at least three times a week for the rest of 2020. In exchange, they will be given as much food as they need and receive a capacity grant of $20K to build infrastructure to meet the needs of their clients. The money is used for upgrading their refrigeration units, storage units, purchasing pallet jacks, etc. Thirty-five of the SD/NC Food Banks 500 agencies were selected to serve as Super Pantries.

About a third of the county Super Pantries are located in North County.

“What I love about this Super Pantry program is that in the short-term, it lets us respond to Covid-19 challenges,” says Floros. “Long-term we have improved on our supply chain while assisting larger numbers of residents in our county.”

The SDFB is a member of the California Association of Food Banks. All 43 members co-op together to buy ugly or blemished produce from regional growers who unfortunately, throw away 60-70 percent of these items each year.

Kevin Ham, Vista’s Economic Development Director for almost 20 years is proud to serve on the Advisory Board for the Food Bank. “Food insecurity is often an unseen challenge for people,” he says. “Serving on the board is something I can do to personally help the people that work and live in our community. For example, the Vista business park has 900 companies that employ 20K people and many of them can use this support. As a board member, I am able to contribute my time, find helpful resources, and do what I can in some small way to support this worthy cause.”

Providing needy families and teens with food doesn’t stop with the Food Bank. One of its many non-profit partners is a program close to home called Vista Teen Outreach Hunger Hurts. Established in 2011, the organization’s mission is to provide food and essential items to middle and high school kids who have been identified as at-risk at their schools. Spearheaded by Debbie Medrano and a team of volunteers, the organization typically provides 700-900 backpacks per month to 15 schools in Vista. Backpacks are used to reduce the shame and embarrassment sometimes associated with receiving a handout. When schools closed due to Covid-19, it became even more difficult to get food to the students so they worked closely with Michelle Walsh of the Vista School District and continued to deliver food weekly to families that were receiving free lunches.

“We have had so many hurdles and challenges to overcome when dealing with Covid-19 restrictions,” says Medrano. “We needed masks and gloves, more supplies, a larger space to store non-perishable foods and create ways to keep our volunteers safe. It seemed daunting, but our Facebook family was amazing. We put it out there and people just started responding. Before we knew it, we had what we needed.”

Medrano says a GoFundMe account raised more than $12.5K in a couple of weeks. It was the largest amount they had ever raised in a single fundraiser.

Medrano says that another challenge was purchasing food in bulk at places like Costco where supplies were extremely limited during the early days of the quarantine. “The food banks have been wonderful resources for us,” says Medrano. “WinCo and other grocery

stores allowed us to order items in bulk online through them, which is a great help. We are also very grateful to our partner, T.J. Crossman Auto Repair in Vista. When we needed more space, they provided it. The community as a whole has been a tremendous help to us.”

Although they normally take June and July off, Vista Teen Outreach plans to continue the family food bags for 110 families each week during summer school.

“None of this would be possible without the generosity of our volunteers and the outpouring of support we receive from our community,” says Medrano. “We are a non-profit with a 100 percent volunteer work force.

Everything goes to the kids. We do it for the love of our community and the kids in our schools because we never want to see a child go hungry.”

Vista Community Clinic www.vcc.org The Vista Community Clinic typically serves more than 69,000 patients per year at its nine locations in North San Diego, Riverside and North Orange Counties. It works as a safety net for those who are losing their insurance or are under insured. The Covid-19 pandemic has only heightened the needs for many more individuals who have suffered job losses or have become ill due to the virus. According to Betsy Heightman, Chief Development Officer for the VCC, there have been many unique challenges created by Covid-19.

“The first thing we had to do was shut down our ancillary services such as optometry, dental, acupuncture, podiatry, and chiropractic,” she says.

“To ensure patient and staff safety, we set up screening test centers at the front of each of our clinics to check for fever. Once cleared, patients were allowed to go inside where there are now partitions, signage encouraging social distancing, and new policies and precautions in place.”

Heightman says that since late March, the Clinic has enrolled more than 1,800 new patients. They have conducted 35,000 tele-health visits, performed more than 1,100 Covid-19 tests, 5,700 behavioral health visits via tele-health, distributed more than 800 diapers, and provided 2,800 individuals and families with food. The Clinic also sponsors breakfast and lunch meals to more than 6,600 youth Monday-Friday in Oceanside as well as Vista.

“We have had to be incredibly innovative on how we effectively approach our continued service to the community,” says Heightman. “Our CEO has been with us for 35 years and our leadership

team at the clinic, as well as our staff are all remarkably mission driven. We have daily hour-long leadership meetings to better stay on task and proactive as we learn more about Covid-19 and how we can best respond to the needs of our patients.”

Heightman says that their frontline workers have been real heroes since the very beginning. “The level of appreciation from our community has been wonderful through all of this. We’ve had lunches donated weekly for them and we regularly receive face masks and other helpful items for our staff. It’s truly been a blessing. On May 5, we raised more than $30K in a campaign entitled Giving Tuesday Now, similar to the Giving Tuesday held in November after Thanksgiving. One patient donated $500 just to show his appreciation.

Our grant writers are also working hard to also find additional funding during these challenging times and we are grateful for all of it.”

In recent days all the ancillary services have reopened with new precautions and safety protocols in place. “It’s a new way of doing things, but we continue to learn as we go,” says Heightman.

Business Recovery & Local Support The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted the way we do business. All of us are living in challenging times as we adjust to what has eventually become a “new normal” that no one ever envisioned. Whether it is how to conduct business with health and safety measures in place, economic stress on a business, or just worrying what the future holds, we are all anxious to get back to something as close to normal.

North County Cares Supports Local Families in Need.

COVID-19 has certainly had a far-reaching effect on our local restaurants who have in recent months had to either shutter their doors entirely or move to takeout only. While the current situation has allowed many to open once again, social distancing has become the new norm with its own set of unique challenges. The landscape of our eateries is not like it was, and it won’t return to what we once regarded as normal for quite some time.

The citizens of our community have also been deeply impacted by this pandemic. Countless people have been in great need of resources. Being unable to secure adequate food for your kids is not something that parents should have to worry about, and that’s where North County Cares comes in.

North County Cares was born out of a desire to simultaneously support our struggling local restaurants and to help our families in need. It’s a program that represents a team effort between the Oceanside and Vista Chambers of Commerce, as well as the San Diego North Economic Council. Through both corporate and individual contributions, they are able to purchase discounted gift cards from restaurants who must be members of either chamber in order to participate. The cards are then distributed to families known to lack adequate sustenance through the channels of Vista Unified School District and their partners for the city of Vista. To convey just how much of a need there is out there, you should know that the Vista school district alone has provided an astounding 35,000 free breakfasts and lunches per week to its families in recent months. When taking that staggering number into account, it allows us to see the very real conditions for so many around us. Important to note is that while the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce is a vital partner in the North County Cares program, they are separately serving their school district’s families in need through their own distribution channels.

Valued Vista restaurant participants are: Shaks Mediterranean Bistro, Wildwood Crossing and Cantina, When Pigs Fly BBQ, Mikko Sushi, Hungry Bear Deli, Vista Village Pub, Grand Slam Pizza, Lamppost Pizza, Mama 'n Papas Pizza, and Prohibition Brewing. These businesses are greatly appreciated and the program could not run without their cooperation and support. Their willingness to offer gift cards at a discount to the program is key to helping the dollars stretch, in turn aiding more families. The list of participating restaurants continues to grow and the program is happy to welcome more into its ranks.

I embark on my journey as Chair of the Board of Directors, I pause to appreciate the significant challenges before us. There are not enough pages in this magazine to cover all the issues we face today. The economic realities of the business shut down and risk of illness have challenged our county in ways our generation has never seen. I believe the solution is a vaccine and I am grateful to the many scientists and medical experts who are devoted to this cause, some of which are here in North County.

As owner of Prohibition Brewing Company, I understand firsthand the need for businesses to adapt in order to survive. And, more than ever, we must support each other in order to restore our happiness, freedom, and economy. I am encouraged by our community and the ways that residents and businesses are working together. And, I am proud of the role the Chamber has played during these past months. Our staff and Board is dedicated to promoting, supporting, and educating our businesses and I have to take a moment to thank our team for their tireless efforts. Thank you!

Functioning During Unfunctional Times

Two of Vista’s most prominent grocery retailers – Frazier Farms and Rodeo’s Meat Market – are doing their very best to respond to customer’s needs during the crazy Covid-19 crisis.

“We are following all the CDC’s guidelines during these unprecedented times,” says Matthew Poucher, Chief Financial Officer for Frazier Farms at 225 Vista Village Drive. Boasting 155 employees at the Vista store alone, employees and customers are required to wear masks and social distance maintaining 6 feet apart. The store, which opened in 2005, supplies customers with hand sanitizer and limits store capacity to 5060 customers at a time. Employees are required to wear gloves and plexiglass barriers have been installed at each check-stand. Store hours are 8am - 9pm with the 8am-9am reserved for elderly (65+), handicapped, pregnant women and those that are immune compromised or at risk.

“Supply chain issues have been a challenge for us,” states Poucher. Across the board, the store has had some shortages in the meat, cheese and general groceries area since the Covid-19 onset.

Rodeo’s Meat Market, located at 356 Vista Village Dr., has made a lot of changes to store procedures since the on-set of Covid-19. “We are constantly working to make our shopping environment as safe as possible,” says Ruth Chavez, store operations manager.

When California issued its stay-at-home orders and people across the state rushed to stock up on food and toilet paper, Dr. Bronner’s knew it was in for a challenge.

The top-selling brand of natural soap in North America, the company also manufactures and sells organic hand sanitizer, among other health and beauty products. After receiving confirmation of its status as an essential business from the City of Vista and state of California, it increased production of its soap, hand sanitizer, and other hygiene products. According to Mike Bronner, president of Dr. Bronner’s, the company’s hand sanitizer is being produced at 600% the usual rate. But demand for soap and hand sanitizer has spiked, and the company is “doing our best to fulfill the increase in orders,” says Bronner.

In spite of the company’s best efforts, outside constraints prevent it from fully meeting orders, so the company has needed to place a limit on online orders.

But these challenges haven’t stopped the company from donating 4% of its hand sanitizer to at-risk communities.

Dr. Bronner’s has donated hand sanitizer to organizations serving unhoused, low-income, and otherwise at-risk populations across the U.S. Says Bronner, “We are continuing to work with advocates and service providers to get our products in the hands of those who need them most during this public health crisis.”

In addition to its customers and the larger community, Dr. Bronner’s has always been committed to its employees. “Dr. Bronner’s is a family business not only because immediate family works in company leadership, but also because we consider all who work with us to be part of our extended family,” says Bronner (who is the grandson of founder Emanuel Bronner). In fact, one of the company’s “Cosmic Principles” is to “treat employees like family.”

Dr. Bronner’s began producing peppermint liquid soap in 1948 in Los Angeles, California. The company moved to Vista in 2013 as production increased and it required a larger facility. The company manufactures a range of organic and fair trade body care products, and its Castile Liquid Soap is a favorite among customers, with peppermint, lavender, citrus, and almond fragrances among its top sellers. One of its newest products, All-One Toothpaste, has become a topseller in the natural toothpaste category, according to Bronner.

While the challenge of the COVID-19 crisis has impacted our daily lives dramatically, I wanted to take a moment to publicly thank our Vista Unified teachers and staff for the commitment, perseverance, and professionalism they have all shown in the face of these overwhelming conditions. I know, first hand, how challenging these past few months have been for members of the Vista Unified team juggling the impacts on work and the impacts on their personal life. I am truly grateful for their continued commitment to students and families.

Our work as a collective team brought (and will continue to bring) much needed stability and support to the Vista and Oceanside communities not only in teaching and learning, but also in health, welfare, nutrition, social/ emotional, technology, and many other areas. Every day of the week for the past few months, we had Vista Unified staff working, volunteering, promoting, supporting, and advocating for our students and families. While the current health crisis has been devastating for us all, I am so proud of the strength displayed by all of our employees.

As we look back on a most extraordinary school year, one marked with many different surprises and challenges, please know that the contributions of all teachers and staff are appreciated, valued, and symbolic of the great culture Vista Unified has created for our community.

I am compelled to include a brief statement about the most recent challenge we all face in our city, county, state, and nation. The images of the protests, both peaceful and not, in response to reprehensible violence against Black Americans are heartbreaking. In the midst of the ravages of COVID-19, Vista’s Sand n Straw community farm remains steadfast in sharing its beauty, charm and abundant crops.

Owners Rich and April Viles, “the heart and soul of Sand n Straw,” grow a potpourri of more than 70 crops per year. Along with its variety of fresh vegetables and greens, the farm showcases an abundance of native plants, fruit trees, berries, herbs and vegetables.

Sand n Straw also offers a Farm Box, a Community Supported Agriculture CSA - Box, chock-full of freshly picked, greens, root crops, herbs, and vegetables. Buyers may choose their items while the team assembles CSA boxes for the undecided.

“Your weekly box is full of fresh locally grown fruits, veggies and herbs harvested at just the right time,” said Viles. “We’re about to explode your taste buds!”

The seasoned farmers purchased the 6-acre farm in 2018, determined to bring Vista’s community farming to the “next level.” Sand n Straw’s Vista location was deemed “perfect” upon first sight.

Pesticide-free, the Viles’ follow “organic practices” and utilize regenerative agriculture methods to build the soil and create “a healthy balance and thus produces nutritious produce.”

“Using regenerative agriculture practices, we’ve created a sustainable farm to provide for our family and open the door to sharing fresh locally grown food with our community,” Viles said.

“We knew instantly this was the perfect location for our farm,” said April Viles.

“We’re close to North County, yet when you get here you feel as though you’re in the country.”

“We invite nature into the farm,” continued April Viles. “We even installed a pond to provide a beneficial habitat for insects, birds and wildlife. Rich built a greenhouse for a Fall crop of seedlings; a processing station to wash, dry and trim produce; and a produce cold-storage building.”

Other state-of-the-art techniques include terracing, water reclamation, soil ecology and natural beautification.

The Viles’ replaced everything antiquated in the property’s 1920 farmhouse with everything modern. They also transformed a shed into a chicken coop and added a 1,900-square-foot shaded pen enclosure for their pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits and ducks.

Other additions included a farm stand, a public bathroom, a children’s slide, shaded seating areas, and two dirt parking areas to accommodate over 20 cars.

The growers added 100 fruit trees and 40 dragon fruit cactuses to the existing groves of peach, apple, plum, pear and persimmon trees. Strawberry and native blackberry crops sidle 90-foot row gardens of kale, watermelon, cantaloupe, pumpkin, basil, green beans, peppers and summer squash.

“To attract beneficial birds and insects, Rich installed a large pond and waterfall,” said Viles. “He has also planted pollinator plants like bachelor button and borage within the row crops to attract bees.”

The couple also plans to add a water reclamation area to capture rainfall.

Sand n’ Straw is family owned and operated. The Viles’ admit, “we can’t do it ourselves.” Family members work around the clock – even those living

“Townships brought farmers in to tend to the land as families pitched in to invest in the crops,” she said. “At the end of the growing season, crops were split amongst the families. Nowadays, the model looks a bit different, but has the same mindset and goal.”

What’s not sold at the farm stand of the daily 100 pounds of market-ready produce is donated to organizations to feed the needy.

While Sand n Straw’s chef-led cooking classes, gardening classes, farm-to-table dinners and farm tours are presently on hold, the Viles’ are “working on ways to get them up and going again in the new COVID-19 world.”

“Sand n Straw is truly a community farm,” concluded Viles. “We offer a farm for the community and a community of people make it all happen.”

The Viles’ encourage everyone to pick up farm fresh produce and “pull up a seat, take a break and enjoy farm life.”

Odyssey Bolsters VUSD Students’ Emotional Fitness Through Virtual Learning and the Pandemic.

Surveys of VUSD parents show tensions are high in anticipation of how the new school year will roll out. Parents are concerned about their children’s health and their social-emotional wellbeing. Today’s screen-driven world makes it harder for kids to have authentic human interactions, and parents are worried that virtual school will lead to more screen time than ever.

That’s why Vista Unified School District is offering elementary parents extra support boosting their kids’ emotional fitness through an innovative new program from an Oceanside-based edtech startup called Odyssey. The unique curriculum sparks deeper connections between parents and children when they play Odyssey together on a mobile device, using a screen to enhance off-screen interpersonal connections.

Parents and children are guided through a series of 5-minute activities designed to boost self-esteem, improve self-control, reduce conflict and frustration, and make a habit of recognizing everyday moments of joy.

Odyssey is based on the 10,000 Hour theory made famous by Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers, where expert skills are acquired through practice and repetition. Over 100 activities developed

by PhD psychologists empower students to practice acts of kindness, frustration tolerance, active listening, and other foundational skills of emotional intelligence (also known as EQ). The program launched with Vista Virtual School last April, and students generated over 1,000 acts of kindness in the first week alone. Kids are motivated to build emotional fitness through Odyssey’s prize system - the more you practice EQ, the more chances you have to win a prize.

“I read dozens of books and scoured the internet for ways I could give my children an advantage in life,” says Amber Trivedi, Odyssey CEO and VUSD
